00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of Look Around London. Tower Bridge is one of London's
00:07most iconic landmarks, spanning the River Thames near the Tower of London. Built between 1886 and
00:151894, it's a combined bascule and suspension bridge, meaning it can open in the middle to let
00:22tall ships pass through. Its two massive towers are connected by walkways and house the machinery
00:29that operates the bridge lifts. Designed to ease road traffic while still allowing river access,
00:36Tower Bridge was a marvel of Victorian engineering. The lifting bascules were originally powered by
00:43steam, but today they use electricity and hydraulics. The bridge opens about 800 times during the course
00:52of the year.
