One of London's most famous bridges that made an appearance in a Harry Potter movie
00:04
is set to close while it undergoes a major revamp and deep clean.
00:08
I'm here at the Millennium Bridge which connects the St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London
00:13
with the Tate Modern on the south bank of the River Thames,
00:17
where the crossing will be shut to the public from October 14th
00:20
and will reopen on November 5th after works have been completed.
00:25
The City Bridge Foundation, which owns and maintains five bridges in the capital,
00:30
said that this is so the synthetic membrane separating the bridge's steel structure
00:35
from its aluminium bridge deck can be replaced.
00:38
Work will be ongoing 24 hours a day but no power tools will be used from 9pm to 8am.
00:45
CBF chairman Giles Shilson said the bridge is starting to show its age.
00:50
The separation layer under the bridge deck has started to degrade and needs addressing urgently.
00:55
Mr Shilson added that he promised to get the work done as quickly as possible
01:00
and apologised to the public for any inconvenience.
01:04
The Millennium Bridge was opened in 2000 to mark the start of a new millennium.
01:09
It had to be temporarily shut soon after due to significant movement
01:13
while people were crossing and became known as the Wobbly Bridge.
01:18
Boat drivers and tour guides claim to Groups that the architect who designed the bridge
01:23
initially said the design was faultless and said it only wobbled because of the way people were walking.
01:29
This time though, the work isn't down to any obvious wobbling
01:33
and public will be able to cross the Millennium Bridge again on November 5th.
