21 July - national forecast presented by Alex Burkill
Transcript
00:00Well, it's a really messy start to the week, isn't it?
00:03There have been some heavy bursts of thundery rain already,
00:07and there's more to come as we go through today.
00:09Looking at the earlier satellite image,
00:11and it's really quite easy to see the low pressure that's across the UK,
00:15bringing the unsettled theme,
00:17the swirl of cloud going around the low pressure,
00:20and various occluded fronts being the focus of some heavy, persistent rain.
00:25We've seen some heavy rain, particularly across parts of Northern Ireland.
00:28Earlier on today, some places saw 50, 60 millimetres in just eight hours or so,
00:33so no wonder we've had some disruption across eastern parts of Northern Ireland in particular.
00:38Also, a fair amount of clouds and rain across Scotland,
00:40parts of Wales, southwest England, and into East Anglia.
00:43In between, it was a largely dry, bright, sunny start,
00:46but as we go into the afternoon, we are going to see plenty of showers developing.
00:51They're going to be fairly scattered, so not everywhere we'll see the showers.
00:54Some places will stay dry with some decent sunshine,
00:56but if you do catch some of those showers, they could be heavy, they could be thundery.
01:01Perhaps the greatest risk areas around the Pennines area a little bit further south,
01:06and also across some parts of southern Scotland,
01:08a bit of convergence likely to lead to some intense thundery downpours.
01:12And we do have a number of warnings out.
01:14There's a potential that some of those thunderstorms could lead to 20, 30 millimetres in just an hour or so,
01:19perhaps even up to 40 or 50 millimetres.
01:21So some intense rain could cause some problems.
01:24Also, the risk of some thunderstorms across parts of the southeast and more persistent rain continuing across parts of Northern Ireland.
01:30With the heavy rain that we saw earlier on today, that could cause some further issues.
01:34And rain building up across western parts of Scotland as well.
01:38Some high rainfall totals likely as we go through the end of the day and overnight.
01:42So again, some localised issues as a result.
01:45Temperature-wise, well, it's going to feel warm if you get any of the sunshine in between those showers.
01:49But as you would expect, where it's cloudier and where it's raining, well, it's going to feel that bit fresher.
01:55Temperatures, though, generally high teens, low to mid-twenties perhaps for some of us.
01:59As I said, across parts of Scotland, the rain is going to continue.
02:02So it's going to be very wet across western parts of Scotland.
02:05Some high totals leading to some issues.
02:07Further east, a drier picture.
02:09More rain across parts of Wales, southwest England.
02:12Quite a cloudy, damp night ahead.
02:14Across more central and eastern parts of England, well, most of the showers should clear through.
02:18They may take a little while as we go through the evening.
02:20But through much of the night, it's going to be generally dry and some clear skies towards eastern parts.
02:25As a result, similar to last night, we may see some mist and fog patches developing.
02:29But it's not going to be a chilly night.
02:31No, not at all.
02:32Temperatures holding up mid-teens across many places.
02:35Obviously, where we get the cloud and the rain, that's going to help keep those temperatures up as well.
02:40Then as we go through tomorrow, the heavy rain across western parts of Scotland kind of fragments, breaks up a little bit.
02:46But it is gradually going to push a little bit further eastwards.
02:49And similar story with the rain further south as well, gradually making its way eastwards.
02:54So although eastern parts will start the day dry, bright, sunny, we are going to see things turning cloudier with some rain arriving.
03:00And that could turn quite heavy over some parts of Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, for example.
03:04Some heavier bursts.
03:05Otherwise, scattering of showers here and there.
03:08Yes, some could be heavy.
03:10There could be some thunder mixed in.
03:11But generally, it doesn't look quite as unsettled as it will be today.
03:16That being said, a bit more cloud as we go through the afternoon.
03:19A little bit less sunshine on offer compared to today for many of us.
03:22And that will have a slight effect on our temperatures.
03:25On paper, they look relatively similar.
03:27But they are going to be a degree or so down.
03:29And with the cloud, if you get cloud instead of sunshine, of course, it's not going to feel as warm.
03:35As we go later on in the week, can we stick with the generally cyclonic pattern?
03:40So the messy theme continues for a while.
03:43But I am expecting things to turn a little bit drier.
03:46So less heavy thundery rain.
03:48That being said, there will be some around, particularly across eastern, southeastern parts as we go through Wednesday.
03:53So do watch out for that, as that could cause some issues.
03:56Temperatures are going to dip a little bit as we go towards the middle of the week.
03:59But they should rise again as we go towards Friday.
04:02So turning warmer, perhaps even hot for some of us, towards the very end of the week.
