00:00Hello and welcome, I'm Geeta Mohan and you're watching World Today.
00:05Is the Netanyahu administration in trouble?
00:08As Israel still continues to wait for the remaining hostages to be released
00:12and pounce Gaza continuously saying it intends to wipe out the Hamas,
00:18Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces a tough time saving his government.
00:24Israel's two ultra-Orthodox parties, United Torah, Judaism and Shas,
00:29are on the verge of quitting, threatening the existence of Netanyahu's coalition government.
00:38It is a test for the Israeli Prime Minister again.
00:41So far, many of his opponents have blamed him for using Gaza war tactics to remain in power.
00:48After the October 7th Hamas attack, there was a growing call for Bibi's resignation,
00:53but his government survived.
00:55But this time it is different.
00:57Israel's two ultra-Orthodox parties, United Torah, Judaism and Shas,
01:02are on the verge of quitting, threatening the existence of Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government.
01:10UTJ's legislators submitted their resignations, which takes effect within 48 hours.
01:16The exit of these ultra-Orthodox parties will challenge Netanyahu's numbers in the Knesset,
01:22but elections are not closed.
01:25Earlier, leader of the ultra-UTJ party resigned from Netanyahu's government
01:29following Israeli parliament's rejection of a preliminary bill to dissolve itself.
01:34The motion, which could have paved the way for early elections,
01:38was defeated by a vote of 61 to 53.
01:41Recent polls suggest Netanyahu would likely lose if elections were held now.
01:46While the ultra-Orthodox seminar students have been exempted from mandatory military service,
01:54many Israelis are angry that it's unfair to other groups.
01:58The ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders feel that young men will turn away from religion if drafted into military.
02:05The Shas also said they are leaving the cabinet in protest against the failure to guarantee future exemption
02:14from military conscription for religious students.
02:18If the Shas quit, the coalition will have 50 seats in the 120-seat Knesset.
02:24With Mahasweta Lala, Bureau Report, India Today.
02:30Who are the Druze? And why is Israel trying to save this community?
02:34This is leading to a clash between Israel and the new Syrian government
02:38that was brought to power after the fall of the Assad regime.
02:43Serious peace seems distant.
03:04After 14 years of civil unrest and the fall of Bashar al-Assad,
03:13Syria was trying to adapt itself to a normal life and a new government.
03:20But recent attacks from Israel have dented all hopes.
03:26After a deadly clash between Druze militias and Sunni bedouin fighters in southern Syria,
03:31Israeli military intervened, seeking to protect the Druze community.
03:39It serves as a warning to the Syrian army, as Israel eyes a demilitarized zone in the area.
03:46Israel also fears the presence of Islamist fighters along the Israel-occupied Golan Heights.
03:51Our interests in Syria are known, limited and clear.
04:01First of all, to maintain the status quo in the southern Syrian region,
04:05which is also close to our border,
04:07and to prevent the development of threats against Israel in this area.
04:11The second thing, to prevent harm to the Druze community,
04:15with which we have a bold and strong relationship,
04:17with the Druze citizens here in Israel.
04:20I hope that we can make some accommodation and create a rapport between us and the Syrians.
04:30But the leader of Syria has been, until very recently, ISIS.
04:35And we can't afford to have ISIS in control of Syria.
04:40So they have to understand that if they want to be safe and secure in the newer regime,
04:47they have to make the necessary accommodations and treat the minorities in Syria in a proper manner.
04:52Otherwise, we will not be able to sit still.
04:55We'll do everything that we can do in order to prevent any massacres in the Druze community.
05:01But amid Israel's claim of protecting the Druze from Syrian government forces,
05:08the country's interim president has pledged to protect the rights of every community.
05:15He also blames Israel for sowing seeds of division.
05:20I also address the Druze people, who are an integral part of the fabric of this nation.
05:25Syria will never be a place for division or fragmentation or sowing discord among its people.
05:32We assure you that protecting your rights and freedom is one of our priorities.
05:36And we reject any effort that aims to drag you to an external party
05:39or to create division within our ranks.
05:45The Israeli military struck the Ministry of Defence and the Syrian Army headquarters in Damascus.
05:51But this has not been the first time.
05:53Israel has struck Syria earlier too with the sole purpose of stalling the new Syrian regime
06:00from building its military capabilities.
06:04As the Druze community fears for its security,
06:07scores of Israeli Druze are walking into the Syrian's light to express their solidarity.
06:16What's happening here today, we are seeing a large gathering of Druze from all over the country.
06:20From the Carmel, the Galilee, and also the Golan,
06:25who came to show support and express what you might call their opinion
06:28and solidarity with our Druze brothers on the other side,
06:32especially in the Druze stronghold of Sueda.
06:34But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has urged the Druze from not going into the Syrian territory.
06:46My brothers, the Druze citizens of Israel,
06:51the situation in Sueda, the situation in southern western Syria, is very serious.
06:56The IDF is operating, their forces operating, the other forces are operating.
07:02We are acting to save our Druze brothers and to eliminate the regime's gangs.
07:06And now I have one request from you.
07:08You are citizens of Israel.
07:10Do not cross the border.
07:11You are endangering your lives.
07:13You could be killed.
07:14You could be kidnapped.
07:15And you are harming the IDF's efforts.
07:17Therefore, I ask you, return to your homes.
07:20Let the IDF act.
07:21Meanwhile, U.S. has called for a de-escalation and withdrawal of Syrian and Israeli troops.
07:33Well, certainly an end to the conflict,
07:36an end to the nature of the violence that is happening,
07:40an Israeli withdrawal, a Syrian government withdrawal from the area as well.
07:47For now, the Druze community belonging to an Arab sect
07:50who primarily live in Syria, Lebanon and Israel have a movement to breathe.
07:57As Syrian government forces are withdrawing from the region of Sueda
08:01as part of a cease-fire deal with the community.
08:05Mahashwet Alala, Bureau Report, India Today.
08:13This is the big story we've been tracking to discuss what's happening on the ground
08:17and how is Israel reacting to the situation.
08:21I'm being joined from Tel Aviv by Brigadier General Yossi Kapurwaser,
08:25who is the head of JISS, Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security.
08:30Thank you so much, General, for joining me over here.
08:32Let's begin with the situation on the ground.
08:36Was there an assessment made by the Israeli agencies
08:38when Assad was toppled and Al-Sharah was coming to power
08:44knowing very well that he also belongs to and represents a very extreme faction?
08:52Thank you for having me.
08:54Good evening.
08:55I think that our assumption when Al-Sharah took power
09:00was that he should be taken with a lot of caution from our side
09:09because of his past and because of the fact that he was very clear
09:14on his negative approach towards Israel when he was a jihadist.
09:20Because of that, we didn't have much expectations from him.
09:24And we were worried also that the jihadists will harm the minorities,
09:32including the Druze minority, the Kurd minority,
09:34and the Alawite minority amongst others.
09:37And this was our concern at the time.
09:38And we said all along the way that we shouldn't rush
09:42and lift the sanctions over Syria and do all kinds of things,
09:45all kinds of gestures towards Al-Sharah
09:48before we can be sure that he really has changed
09:51and he has adopted a new policy.
09:54And this last event in Sueda tells you that we were right
09:59in being cautious about it
10:01because the fact is that troops that belong to the jihadist groups
10:07were involved in this attempt to massacre the Druze community
10:12in the Sueda area, just opposite to the border with Israel.
10:18And they pose a threat not only to the Druze community,
10:22but also to us.
10:23So that's something that we have to take into account.
10:29What we did on the ground was we took action against the troops
10:33that were trying to do that, the terrorists that were trying to do that.
10:37And we took action against the targets in Damascus
10:42in order to convey a clear message to Shara,
10:44we shall not accept this kind of activities and it has to reach a ceasefire with the Druze community
10:52and be determined to secure them and make sure that they are not in harm's way.
10:59How important, General, how important is the Druze community in Syria for Israel and for Israel's security,
11:06to have that stable region, stabilized region at the border where Israel is already fighting at many fronts,
11:13including the Netanyahu administration focused on the release of hostages as well?
11:20Well, they are important because we have a large community of Druze inside Israel that fight and hold key positions in the military
11:32and fight in the combat units of the Israeli defense forces.
11:36And there's a commitment on behalf of Israel to the Druze community
11:42and to the brothers of the Druze community that live in Syria.
11:47We have a commitment to their security and safety.
11:49We made it clear all the way that we are committed to that.
11:53And that's why it's important also from our point of view to make sure that everybody realizes
11:57that when we make a commitment, we mean it.
12:00And that's why we had to take action in order to protect the Druze community
12:03and also to protect us, because if the jihadists will take over the southern part of Syria,
12:10it's going to be a threat to our security as well.
12:13So we are helping the Druze, but we are helping ourselves at the same time.
12:18We have to understand that this area is used by all kinds of terrorist groups.
12:22We just recently arrested two squads of Iranian-led, Iranian-affiliated squads
12:32in southern Syria.
12:35It's not only the jihadists from the Sunni side, but also some Shiites that are operating there.
12:40And we have to make sure that this area is safe
12:42and there's no presence of terrorists of all kinds in this territory.
12:47Right. A very critical front.
12:49We'll have to see how things pan out in the coming days.
12:52Brigadier General Cooper Vassel, thank you so much for joining us here on the network.
12:59Now, Raham Khan, ex-wife of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan,
13:04announced the launch of her political party, Pakistan Republic Party.
13:08This marks her official entry into politics in Pakistan.
13:12Raham Khan said the party will be the voice of the people
13:16and hold the ruling government accountable.
13:19The party has been founded following discontentment in Pakistan's politics.
13:23She said the party intends to replace all the big political party.
13:29Khan is also expected to launch her party's manifesto very soon.
13:33Meanwhile, former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan
13:35has complained of harsh treatment inside the jail.
13:39He has also appealed to his party members
13:41to hold Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Muneer accountable
13:45should something happen to him.
13:47The former Prime Minister, who was voted out of power
13:49through a no-confidence motion,
13:51claimed a colonel and the jail superintendent
13:55were carrying out actions on the orders of Asim Muneer.
14:00Former Prime Minister Imran Khan had previously said
14:03he was caged like a terrorist in a death cell.
14:06Imran Khan's party, Pakistan Tehri Ke Insaf,
14:09plans a nationwide protest pressurizing the Shahbaz Sharif government
14:13to release Imran Khan from prison.
14:15The protests are likely to be led by Imran Khan's sons,
14:18Suleiman Issa Khan and Qasem Khan,
14:21who have so far distanced themselves from dabbling in politics of Pakistan.
14:32Donald Trump's claim that Coca-Cola has agreed to use real cane sugar
14:36in its drinks sold in the U.S.
14:38instead of corn syrup as a part of his Make America Great Again campaign,
14:43while Coca-Cola is yet to confirm the announcement
14:46has triggered a debate of corn syrup versus cane sugar.
14:50India Today's Neha Mordani breaks it down for us.
14:56If the U.S. president were to have his way,
14:59then the highly popular fructose corn syrup in Coca-Cola
15:03would be soon replaced by cane sugar.
15:06President Donald Trump, known to be addicted to Coca-Cola,
15:11specifically Diet Coke,
15:13now seems to be acknowledging the problems associated with the fizzy drink,
15:18instructing Coca-Cola to replace fructose corn syrup with cane sugar.
15:24Fact is, there is opposition from within.
15:28Trump's Health Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,
15:31has voiced concern about the ingredients and the health impacts.
15:36The U.S. Health Secretary has also been critical
15:39of the amount of sugar Americans consume
15:41and had plans to update nationwide dietary guidelines this year.
15:46Approximately 41.9% of adults in the United States have obesity
15:51and about 9.2% have severe obesity,
15:55according to the CDC,
15:57and this is a worry upon the health department.
16:01Trump is a regular drinker of Diet Coke,
16:03which uses the artificial sweetener aspartum.
16:08He had a button installed in the Oval Office's Resolute desk
16:11so he can be served the soda.
16:13He drinks up to 12 cans a day.
16:17Coke salt in the U.S. is typically sweetened with corn syrup.
16:20Coke in other countries,
16:21such as Mexico, the United Kingdom in Australia,
16:24and in India, use cane sugar.
16:26The beverage giant has declined to either confirm
16:30or deny change to ingredients in its signature soft drink.
16:34Research has pointed out towards this direction
16:37that cane sugar is derived from sugar cane,
16:40corn syrup is derived from corn starch.
16:42Pretty much the same when it comes to the body's response
16:45to these products when people drink Coca-Cola.
16:49Well, the fact of the matter is
16:50that it has the same digital response
16:52on insulin resistance
16:54and also on a feeling of fullness
16:56when you consume this beverage
16:58and also body weight gain,
17:01essentially on weight gain.
17:03Cane sugar, derived from sugar cane or sugar beets.
17:07High fructose corn syrup is made from corn starch.
17:11When comparing equal amounts of cane sugar and HFCS,
17:15research suggests that they have similar effects
17:18on feelings of fullness,
17:20insulin response and body weight.
17:23In other words, both are the same.
17:26I don't think it makes any difference
17:28as far as negative health impacts
17:30of drinking cola are concerned,
17:33which are more likely on obesity and diabetes
17:36kind of things.
17:37I'm talking about the difference between the two.
17:40The composition of the two sugars
17:41is nearly the same.
17:42It is both are composed of a combination
17:45of glucose and fructose.
17:50Additionally, they are the same.
17:51High fructose corn syrup will be equally as damaging
17:54to your body as cane sugar.
17:56The real nutritional benefits can only be obtained
17:59by consuming fewer sugary foods and drinks.
18:03High intake of sugars from any sources
18:05can lead to weight gain, inflammation,
18:08insulin resistance, diabetes, fatty liver,
18:11cancer, cancers and many more.
18:15What this move will perhaps end up doing
18:18is hurt American corn farmers
18:20other than reaping any health benefits.
18:23Corn farmers are upset with this announcement.
18:27The president himself hooked to Diet Coke,
18:29uses Aspartum,
18:30already flagged off as a problematic ingredient
18:33by the WHO, so this move, experts say,
18:36will only change the taste of Coca-Cola
18:38in the United States
18:39and do nothing for the highly obese population
18:42in the country.
18:43A Coke using any form of sugar
18:45is still Coke.
