03:31the first run in the first car is a little more sedate,
03:35and then it goes absolutely crazy towards the end there,
03:37when everybody knows how many laps they've got to go
03:39and exactly what energy they've got left.
03:41And we talk about energy saving and usable energy.
03:44The difference to this and any other formula is
03:46we've got all the numbers right there on the left side of the screen.
03:48Yep, exactly.
03:49You don't have that in any other formula of racing
03:51that tells you how much fuel is in the tank.
03:54That's what we've got here, so we know what is going on.
03:56You hear the crowd cheering there.
03:58Degrassi just keeping watch in second position.
04:02I have to say Sarazan's not getting dropped either.

04:06Your point about the fans here in Long Beach,
04:08they've seen a lot of racing on these streets.

04:19Degrassi was able to just close that gap a touch.
04:22When Degrassi does, and if he does try to make a move,
04:25a pass for the lead, it's going to have to be a decisive pass.

04:30and not going to give up that lead.
04:32He enjoyed winning in Argentina too much to just throw it away here.
04:36He came up the action a little bit further back in the field.
04:42Just watching, looking at the cars,
04:43you look at that Venturi car in screen.
04:45Look how little downforce they're running.
04:47These cars had a lot more downforce in them in qualifying.
04:50Obviously straight line speed is key to holding position
04:53or gaining position, maybe more than mid-corner.
04:56It's great being quick through the mid-corner.
04:58It's not going to help you really pass anybody.
05:04I love this part of the racetrack,
05:05the quick S-sweep as you line up for the hairpin.
05:09That corner has changed shape in the past couple of years.
05:12They've moved the wall back a bit to open up the run into that hairpin,
05:16which has definitely aided, not so much overtaking,
05:18but it's stopped a lot of stack-ups and a lot of traffic jams
05:21when there is an incident there.
05:23You hear Degrassi coasting.
05:24Now you hear, there you go, there's a regeneration coming in.
05:27Sarazan again, not being dropped,
05:31and he's on the same kind of,
05:33he's used the same amount of energy as the two cars ahead.

05:41He's a friendly guy, but he always looks very, very serious at this point.

05:45Well, start from intimidating and then work backward to friendly.

06:05Veteran Formula E fans know during the pit stop,
06:08they will switch the entire race car,
06:10and that could be a pivotal moment of the race.
06:12Positions can be made up very easily during the pit stop.
06:15The 67 second minimum time between pit in and pit out today.
06:19That means when they are changing cars,
06:21the drivers are hopping from one car to another,
06:23that the seat belts and everything will be tight.
06:26And so safety is definitely a consideration.
06:28Because trust me, if you lift up the drivers,
06:30they'd leave the belt slack in order to gain some competitive advantage.

06:35And it's all settled down here just a little bit right now.

06:42And as you go through turn four, it narrows up in a hurry.
06:45And that has really caught a lot of the unwary out.

09:02These Formula E cars have tremendous amounts of steering lock,
09:05but you have to put that lock into the car to get it to turn.

09:10Bird able to draw away a little bit from Lucas Degrassi,
09:13who in turn has moved away from Stefan Zarazan.
09:16Robin Frins will be next on Sebastian Buemi's passing list.
09:21But the Dutchman could be a little more difficult to get by than Daniel App was.

09:25And the thing with Robin Frins, that's last year's technology.
09:27He's running around there in that car.
09:30You know, the Andretti Formula E team, Andretti Technologies,
09:33they went down a development road over the winter.
09:35Didn't like it.
09:36They couldn't get it to work properly.
09:37They took the very brave decision,
09:39go back to last year's technology and start the season.
09:42And, you know, yeah, there's times it's maybe a hindrance,
09:45but they have made some great performances with that.
09:48I've had the Aguri team as well.
09:50Now Degrassi closes up again on the race leader, Bird.
09:54Now, he's getting some help there as far as an aerodynamic tow on the streets.
09:58And so he's probably quite content to sort of sit there for a little while.
10:03There's going to come a point, and I would say it's not quite yet.
10:07I would say it's before halfway, possibly as they come to the pit stop,
10:11that he's going to start getting a little more interested in getting past Sandberg.
10:16And it will also depend on how much pressure Stefan Sarazan puts on him.

44:21to be able to make that pass last lap last lap here for lucas degrassi he was so mad last week in
44:30mexico because he did the donuts and the thing that really upset him apart from getting the wind taken
44:34away was that he burned off the tires that he had to use in practice you're doing his celebrated donuts
44:39and there's sam bird having another go i think we'll maybe get some decent donuts out of him today if
44:44he can hang on for this last half lap here sarrazan right with him too now is sam bird going to try
44:51has he found enough to have a goal passing center final time down south side way a little bit of

51:51Many times we were close to the podium in England.
51:54I won last year by disqualifying.
51:56So this time I have my podium, second place.
51:58The team did a great job all the weekend.
52:00My car was very fast.
52:01So I felt it since this morning we can do something very good.

52:07Is this a turning point during the season, do you think?

52:12We are all the time on the points and just close to the good result

53:00and the time I've been watching Formula E, but he still makes those mistakes as well.
53:05And that makes it tough to win, to win championships.
53:09But I think as he matures, he is going to be a consistent championship contender in whatever he's doing.
53:15And he won the World Endurance Championship.
53:17He's not, you know.
53:18Yes, he did.
53:192014.
53:20Yeah, just made that mistake today.
53:21And I mean, it wasn't even like he, the pass was on.
53:25And here, this is the podium.

53:27What an atmosphere this is going to be.

53:32The fans are allowed right up to the podium, clearing that little corridor right there.
53:36And the podium finishers will be asked to walk down and high-five and hug everybody they can see.

54:14You know, after last time in Mexico, we left the racetrack being completely down, losing a victory, losing a potential podium for me.
54:21And I think it was very important to not let us get down to really keep the heads up.
54:26We came here knowing that we are strong, that we can do it.
54:29And we've proven that.
54:30I mean, I think Lucas did a fantastic race to win again.
54:33He deserved it last time also.
54:35And for me to be on the back on the podium, first double podium, very important points for everyone in the team.
54:41Tonight we're going to celebrate for sure.

54:44There have been so many frustrating moments for you over the course of this season, but the time has come.
54:49You know, you really, really focus on this race and it's played off.
54:52Yeah, I don't know what it is about races in the US, but whenever I come here, I just feel a special vibe.

55:00And coming into this weekend, I had this feeling that we would be on the podium, that we would make it and that we would show everyone after Mexico that we are winners.
55:08And I think we've proven that today as a team and now we're going to celebrate Inspiration Pain.

55:42Jerome D'Ambrosio just could not get the fan boost to loft him up higher than seventh.
55:49Loic Duval, Simona Di Silvestro with a good run for Andretti, top ten for her.
55:53And Mike Conway, remember, started well back in the field.
55:56He comes up to pick up a point.
55:58Renault Edams continued to struggle, cross finishing.
56:02Eleventh, Oliver Turvey a day after his birthday.
56:05Twelfth, Jean-Erik Verne.
56:07Salvador Duran, Robin Frins after that collision with Sebastian Buemi, neither of which benefited from it at all.
56:15Antonio Felix DaCosta stopped for reasons we have yet to find out.
56:19And Nelson Piquet Jr. crashed at the exit of turn two.
56:25And so the championship standings, drum roll please.
56:28Yes, the math was correct.
56:29Luca Degrassi by one point takes the lead over Sebastian Buemi.
56:33Sam Bird in third.
56:35Jerome D'Ambrosio drops from third to fourth.
56:38Stefan Sarazan fifth.
56:39And the gaps are coming down in the various positions in the championship.
56:43There is a long way to go in this season.
56:45Five more races and a lot of points to be distributed.
56:50It's going to be another great year for Formula E.
56:53In the team's championship, Renault Edams came in with a massive lead.
