00:00526 season. Mark, are you going to go away for a little bit before we get there?
00:03Yeah, I'm going to St. Thomas.
00:05I'm going to go to Africa. See, we're going to take a little trip here.
00:07Get your trips in, too.
00:08We've still got plenty of questions that remain unanswered.
00:11And I think that calls for a new edition of Tower of Power.
00:17Ooh.
00:18That sounds like a job for Wendy's Tower of Power.
00:23Oh, that's interesting.
00:24I'm palming the ball.
00:25Number 5, 4, 3, 2.
00:27Number 1.
00:27I say it in a voice. Tower of Power.
00:30Tower of Power.
00:31Starring Brian Windhorst.
00:37Malika, I heard McMahon's going to Puerto Vallarta.
00:40He'll tell you all about it.
00:42All right.
00:43The biggest, five biggest questions.
00:44Number 5, the Warriors.
00:47Will they take care of the rest of their business?
00:48I know some of their fans are frustrated at their lack of activity,
00:51but they could end up with three of the most significant free agents left on the board.
00:56Now, Jonathan Kaminga, restricted free agent.
00:58That's obviously a tension-filled situation.
01:01But there's a possibility they could get something done with him.
01:04And then there's Al Horford, who's probably the best veteran free agent on the market.
01:08He is lined up potentially to sign with the Warriors.
01:10And don't be surprised if they can get DeAnthony Melvin back,
01:13the guy they traded last year after he had a knee injury.
01:15Wait, wait, Brian.
01:16And number 4.
01:17Dispatch from Kendrick Perkins.
01:18Will the Warriors finish business?
01:20I believe on this show there's another way that we could frame what you do with business.
01:24Stand on business.
01:26Stand on business.
01:27All right.
01:27Number 4.
01:28Please continue.
01:28Sorry.
01:28All right.
01:29Number 4.
01:30Don't forget about De'Aaron Fox.
01:32Remember, he's got a big contract situation with the Spurs.
01:35They traded three first-round picks for him last year at the trade deadline.
01:39And you know they did that thinking they were going to get him under contract.
01:41Now, he cannot extend on a new deal until August 3rd.
01:44So, it would come after that.
01:45They can give him up to $230 million over the next four years, adding to the deal.
01:50He said the one year he's got now.
01:52Will they be able to get him for less than that?
01:54Or will they give him the full max?
01:55That's something that we're going to definitely keep an eye on.
01:58At number 3, the buyout we've been waiting for for longer than any other buyout.
02:03And that's Bradley Beal from the Phoenix Suns.
02:05I mean, the idea that you would buy out $200 million players in the same summer with him and Damian Lillard
02:11is something I never thought I would ever see.
02:14But it's coming a little bit normalized.
02:16Beal would have a lot of suitors if he gets to the open market.
02:19He's going to have to take at least $14 million less for the buyout to be legal,
02:23which means he's going to want to recoup that money.
02:25The Clippers are a team that you would think would be a strong candidate for him.
02:28Eventually, I think that's going to get done.
02:30But I've been saying that for a week and a half.
02:32All right.
02:32And then we've got a couple of extensions to pay attention to.
02:35Kevin Durant.
02:36He got traded to the Houston Rockets, in case you forgot.
02:39That was a huge deal, arguably the biggest move of the summer.
02:42But Durant has only one year left on his contract.
02:45And there's a big reason that the Rockets would want to get him locked into a deal that's longer.
02:50Now, he can sign for up to two years at about $120 million.
02:54That's huge money for a guy turning 37 before the start of the regular season.
02:58Would they try to find a deal that is for less than that as they try to fit in all their other big contracts?
03:04Keep an eye on that.
03:05Can we get a drop-off?
03:05Number one, the biggest contract extension of the summer.
03:09You know who it's going to be.
03:10There we go.
03:11Everybody knows from the Lakers camp that August 2nd is the first day that he can sign it.
03:16I would not expect it to happen that early.
03:18There are various reasons why the timeline would be pushed to September.
03:21Don't react negatively, Lakers fans.
03:24If you don't see a deal right away, he's playing for the Slovenian national team.
03:27Also, it behooves him probably to take a three-year contract extension.
03:32The Lakers can offer four and 230, but it makes sense for him to take a three-year extension for various long-term reasons.
03:38But anything that he would sign would be terrific for the Lakers.
03:42They're going to obviously make that their off-season priority.
03:44This is important.
03:45Can you just underscore this for us?
03:47You said don't freak out, which is easier said than done when it comes to all of us NBA fans.
03:52Don't freak out if August 2nd comes and goes and you don't see something.
03:56Can you just explain?
03:58Yeah, so he's playing for the Slovenian national team at the European Championships,
04:01frequently called Eurobasket, which is one of the most valuable tournaments for the Europeans outside the Olympics.
04:08And he won the Eurobasket for Slovenia earlier in his career, probably the greatest moment of his career.
04:13They play six exhibition games leading up to the start on August 27th.
04:18And then they could go as late as September 14th, which means he may not be back into the U.S.
04:23if the Slovenians get all the way to the end until late September.
04:25And, you know, McMahon will tell you that in the past when he's been playing for the national team,
04:29he has not done NBA business, including NBA contracts.
04:32So he could certainly pledge his intention to sign with the Lakers.
04:36But do not freak out if you do not hear from Luka contractually until September.
04:42Yeah, and look, the reason it's an August 2nd extension date is because he waited until after the Olympics to sign his previous contract for the Mavericks,
04:50even though that deal was a mere formality.
04:53He was asked at his exit interviews that year about, hey, what do you think of maybe signing that Supermax?
04:57And he laughed and said, you know what I'm going to do.
05:00This is not a mere formality.
05:03This is the first time that Luka Doncic has really had a decision to make in terms of the contract.
05:09There is no Supermax eligibility.
05:11That blew up when the Mavericks shanked him in the back and shipped him to L.A.
05:15That's just a simple fact of the matter.
05:18And look.
05:19One way to put it.
05:20I mean, it's the honest way to put it.
05:22It's certainly the way that he felt about it.
05:24But this will be an indication of what kind of faith that Luka Doncic has in that Lakers front office.
05:31And again, it's not about when it's signed.
05:34If he wants to wait until after Eurobasket, that's fine.
05:38But if it's not signed heading into the season, that will loom like a black cloud over the Lakers this season.
05:45Anytime there would be a three-game losing streak, it already would be the lead of our show or SportsCenter.
05:51But it would come under even more scrutiny if it's, well, what is this going to mean for Luka's future, Mark?
05:55Yeah, no, I was around when KD was going through that every day.
05:59Which time?
06:00Well, the Golden State thing.
06:02But with Luka, this is kind of like a cool European tour right now.
06:05He's in great shape.
06:07He's changed his diet.
06:08He's obviously in Slovenia getting ready for the national team.
06:10But he was just in Greece.
06:12That looks like a good time.
06:12Hanging out with Jordan, like, I mean, I'm sure the turn-up was outstanding in Athens, Greece.
06:19And then, you know, he had...
06:19Did you say the turn-out or the turn-up?
06:21The turn-up.
06:21Both.
06:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:23Only both.
06:24Trey Young wasn't there.
06:25He's in summer league trying to get his contract situation together.
06:28Another thing to look out for.
06:31But I think for Luka, who plays August 28th against Poland, in Poland,
06:37this is a summer where I think it's going to set the tone for the rest of his career.
06:41Can you say a little bit more about that, Tim,
06:43in terms of this is the first real contract decision that Luka's had to make in his career so far?
06:48Right.
06:49So, look, coming off of this rookie deal, like, guys sign rookie extensions.
06:53Do you want to take a Supermax or do you want to take a qualifying offer
06:56or, you know, go into restricted free agency?
06:59Like, that's not a difficult decision.
07:01Now, there was a time in Dallas, specifically,
07:05especially coming off that season when they had to tank to keep the top ten protected pick,
07:08when he felt like, uh-oh, could this reach a danger zone?
07:12But it didn't.
07:13They made several moves.
07:16The chemistry click with Kyrie.
07:18They went to the finals, and Luka couldn't wait to sign the Supermax contract this summer.
07:23Obviously, circumstances changed drastically.
07:26But, hey, the Lakers are, you know, they're trying to make it his team,
07:31but he did not grow up with this franchise.
07:34Again, they don't have the massive financial advantages of saying,
07:37hey, we can pay you hundreds of millions, you know, nine figures more than anybody else.
07:43So, this will be the first time in Luka's career where it wasn't really an obvious decision.
07:49A forward-on conclusion.
07:50Is he a saint in all this?
07:52I know you said the Mavericks stabbed him in the back,
07:54but does he have to be accountable for anything that led to the trade?
07:57I think he has to be accountable for 34-10-9 and taking a team in the finals the months before.
08:02That's not what I asked.
08:03Is he a saint?
08:05No, of course not.
08:06Yeah.
08:06No, Luka's conditioning has been a problem throughout the course of his career.
08:10He's clearly doing something about that this summer.
08:12The Revenge Bod tour is on.
08:14There's no question about that.
08:16Look, Luka's not a saint, but, again, the man took him to the finals months before.
08:20But forget that.
08:21That business is done.
08:23Let's focus on the business that Luka has in front of him this summer.
08:26I don't think it's time to litigate sainthood,
08:28but it is time to litigate a contract here for Luka Doncic,
08:31and the Lakers clearly want him to be their next face of a franchise.
08:34And, by the way, nobody is saying that he is not going to sign this contract.
08:37We're just talking about the date in which it could be signed.
08:40He does have a decision to make, Brian.
08:41But can you just map out what it looks like?
08:44Let's say he doesn't sign a contract going into the season.
08:48Can you just map that out for us?
08:49Well, there's three max contracts that NBA players, superstars, can sign.
08:55One that's worth 25% of the cap, 30% and 35%.
08:59Depends on years of service.
09:00The first one I call the fun max because almost everybody who's offered it signs it.
09:05It's no big deal like Bontemps discussed.
09:07I mean, like McMahon discussed a minute ago.
09:10Then there's the stress max.
09:11This happens when it's a player's second max contract.
09:14This is when players sometimes leave or are not really worth it.
09:16This is a stress max right now for Luka.
09:19The Lakers are a little bit stressed out about it.
09:21Then there's the legacy max.
09:22When you get the 35%, you're home free.
09:25Everything's going to be great.
09:26This is a stress max situation.
09:28So, if he signs it, relief for the Lakers.
09:31They can spend a little bit of time looking at their roster over the next two or three years,
09:35making decisions that are not based on what's going to be best for us tomorrow.
09:39What are we going to present to Luka in 2026?
09:41We can think about what the team looks like in 27, 28, etc.
09:44If he doesn't sign it, he can be a free agent next summer when there's going to be 10-plus teams with cap space.
09:50If he does not sign it, you will see teams begin to open up maneuvers to try to chase Luka.
09:55And every day that will go by, when there's any sort of wobble with the Lakers,
09:59you mentioned the losing streak, or if they're in seventh place on December 5th or something like that,
10:04everything will be tied to the Luka contract, especially with LeBron on the last year of his contract as well.
10:09So, the Lakers don't want that in their lives.
10:11They want the no-stress max. That's what they're going to try to present to him on August 2nd.
10:15Yeah, pick your fighter.
10:17That is what we're going to pick your own adventure here.
10:20That's what we could be up for here with the Los Angeles Lakers if there's not a deal reached.
10:24Let's get it over to what went down in the WNBA last night.
10:27We had some good action, starting with the Minnesota Lynx in Wintrust Arena,
10:32facing off against the Chicago Sky here.
10:35Nafisa Collier.
10:36Let it cook.
10:37That's a little fadeaway jumper.
10:39And then Angel Reese, with Nafisa all over her, drives in for the contested layup.
10:44Sky goes up by seven.
10:45So, let's head to the third quarter here.
10:47Angel gets the rebound, launches the dime there to Rebecca Allen.
10:54Double-double queen.
10:55In the fourth quarter, Williams finds Collier.
10:59Knocked it out in the lead.
11:00Okay, the Lynx get the win, 91-78.
11:05And then, Alyssa Thomas and the Mercury facing the Valkyries in this tough matchup.
11:09We're going to pick it up in the fourth quarter.
11:1015 seconds to go.
11:12Watch Salon here.
11:13What a set.
11:14Hey!
11:15Nails the three-pointer.
11:17And then nine seconds to go here.
11:19Once again, it's Salon in clutch time, tying the game.
11:23But right here, game's still tied.
11:25Alyssa Thomas with the pick and roll.
11:26Come on, ref.
11:27Gets fouled.
11:28Come on, ref.
11:29She can't believe it.
11:30Thomas would make one of her.
11:31Come on, ref.
11:33Taking the one-point lead.
11:34Come on, ref.
11:35Valkyries.
11:36Stop crying.
11:37Come on, ref.
11:38Ali, you're trying to criticize Luke.
11:40You cried about rest morning.
11:41With the win, the Mercury moving.
11:45In the WNBA standings.
11:47You two are too much.
11:48The Valkyries, they're tied with the Aces for the eighth and final playoff spot.
11:52Caitlin Clark and the Fever, they sit at six, but they're just a game and a half out
11:55from home court advantage in the first round.
11:58So let's now welcome in our WNBA insider, Alexa Philippou, who's live at TD Garden.
12:02That's right.
12:03It's just the second WNBA game in the building to accommodate for the massive crowds for tonight's
12:08Fever Sun matchup.
12:09These two teams, they've got a little bit of history.
12:11I was in the building in Indianapolis when there was a little bit of some fighting to
12:15end the game there, some criticizing the referees.
12:18What are you expecting tonight here, Alexa?
12:20Yeah, Malika, well, both teams really downplayed what happened that last month when things got
12:28a little testy between both squads.
12:31Coach Rashid Mezion said, look, that game's in the past.
12:34We're moving on.
12:35Both teams are looking to try and finish strong going into the all-star break.
12:39But there's also a lot of excitement and anticipation really going into what you were saying before.
12:45Again, the second game ever to be held in this building for the WNBA.
12:49I was actually at this game last year when the Sun were hosting the Los Angeles Sparks,
12:54and it was an incredible environment.
12:56There was 19,000 people.
12:57It was a sellout.
12:58There was Let's Go Sun chance, which is pretty cool to see, given that we're still, you know,
13:02quite a ways away from the Sun's home base in Uncasville.
13:06But I think tonight it's really going to be elevated to a whole other level.
13:09Olivia Nelson-Nedota played in both that game last year and in this game, obviously, this year.
13:13And she was saying that she thought last year was a little bit more nerve-wracking for the team
13:17because it was the first time ever playing in this building.
13:19This year it might be a little bit more intense, though, because of the opponent.
13:22And Tina Charles actually said something that was pretty funny.
13:24She said, we're actually a little, you know, we're prepared if there's more Caitlin Clark fans here
13:28to see if the Fever come to town than Sun fans.
13:30So we'll have to see how it pans out.
13:32Right.
13:33I mean, usually, Alexa, I'm someone who has POMO.
13:35I am proud of missing out for this game.
13:38I have FOMO.
13:38I wish I was there to see this environment because it's going to be electric.
13:42It's going to be awesome.
13:42Hey, before we let you go, some news that came down today.
13:45Kayla McBride from the Minnesota Lynx will replace Ryan Howard,
13:48who is dealing with a knee injury in this year's All-Star Game.
13:51Also, the skills and three-point contest participants, they were just released.
13:56So I want to just take a look at this together.
13:57And as we're looking at this list, what stands out to you?
14:01Also, Caitlin Clark hitting some half-court shots,
14:04but hopefully we can show you that list here coming up.
14:06Ah, there it is.
14:06Yeah, what are you looking at when you see this?
14:10I mean, it has to start with Caitlin Clark, right?
14:12This is the most anticipated debut for a player having in a three-point contest
14:18that we've seen probably in quite some time.
14:21Of course, she has not shot particularly well so far this season,
14:25in large part probably due to those injuries that she's been dealing with.
14:28But we know that she really cared for her first three-point contest
14:32to be in front of those Indy home fans.
14:34She will be able to do that.
14:35So I think that was a huge win for fans when they saw that in the announcement.
14:40But also, it's a really stacked lineup if we go down the list.
14:43Alicia Gray, obviously, the defending champion of both the skills contest
14:47and the three-point contest of this whole group.
14:49She's actually leading the league or leading the group in three-point shooting this season.
14:53Sabrina Unescu, obviously, those 37 points she scored in the three-point contest two years ago.
14:59That was an unbelievable performance.
15:01And then I would not want to have to go up against Kelsey Plum.
15:04She's a tough competitor.
15:06Sonia Citron, an incredible rookie player.
15:08So I'm really excited for this.
15:09I think they did a great job with these players, and it's going to be one for the books.
15:13Yeah, if they do as nearly as good of a job as you do with that concentration over the PA announcer,
15:18then we are in for a real treat in this three-point contest.
15:21Alexa, thank you so very much.
15:22We'll be seeing you coming up here soon on NBA Today.
15:24We do have a little bit more W news before we head to break.
15:26The league announced the name of Paul George.
15:28He underwent a successful arthroscopic procedure on his left knee on Monday
15:32to treat an injury he sustained during a recent workout.
15:35Now, PG, he played 41 games in his first of four years in Philadelphia last season.
15:40As we say good afternoon to our senior insider, Shams Sharanya, who broke this story.
15:45Shams, when exactly did this injury occur, and how will it impact the rest of PG's offseason here?
15:51Malika, I'm told Paul George suffered the injury during an on-court workout last week,
15:56and it led to him visiting a doctor on Friday.
16:00And the decision was made to undergo arthroscopic surgery
16:04because the doctors felt like this would be an injury that would linger
16:07for a player that was never healthy all last year.
16:11Paul George's season ended rehabbing from injections on groin and knee injuries.
16:15He had a finger injury during the season as well.
16:18And so now he starts rehab for this knee injury,
16:21and he will be re-evaluated at the start of this upcoming training camp.
16:26But I am told both sides will be cautious with him.
16:29They want to see Paul George return to that full form.
16:32Paul George, they just have not seen in Philadelphia.
16:34So I do expect both sides to be cautious from this injury that Paul George suffered last week.
16:40Okay, so this is essentially so that they can hopefully see that full-strength Paul George
16:44that we're all waiting for in Philadelphia that never quite came to fruition.
16:48Shams, thank you so very much.
16:49Please don't go too far.
16:51This has been a busy, busy offseason, and we always want to keep tabs on that news.
16:55The Sixers' big three, though, Embiid, Maxie, George.
16:57Shams mentioned it.
16:58They played just 15 games together last season,
17:00and with Philadelphia going 7-8 with that trio sharing the floor together.
17:05Injuries really derailed a lot of teams in the East for this upcoming season.
17:09It is the most wide open that we have seen a conference in quite some time.
17:14And on paper, that should open things up for the 76ers, but that hasn't quite been the case.
17:19Brian, what is it going to take for the Sixers to really contend here in this conference?
17:22Well, they need to have their three best players on their feet in the playoffs,
17:29but they have to get to the playoffs, which they didn't last year because of these injuries.
17:33And Malika, this is a gut punch to the 76ers.
17:37Shams was talking about seeing the doctor on Friday.
17:39It was just on Friday that Daryl Morey, at a press conference in Las Vegas,
17:43was talking about how Paul George was so much looking forward to getting onto the court
17:48to show the Philadelphia fans what he can do.
17:51And I assume later that day, he got this news.
17:54The words were still coming out of his mouth when this happened.
17:57I cannot believe this.
17:59And I will just say, from being around the NBA for 20-plus years,
18:03I can just tell you there's no such thing as minor knee surgery.
18:06Even the most basic procedure requires a big recovery.
18:09It is July.
18:11If you're going to have an injury, you want it to happen in July, not in the spring.
18:15But another setback for this team that needs this team to be together
18:19to get some momentum, Daryl has basically had to spend half of his press conference
18:24just giving injury updates to guys who are coming back from other knee surgeries,
18:29Jared McCain and Joel Embiid.
18:31And now there's another knee surgery.
18:33It's crazy what's going on there.
18:36Yeah, look, if you want to turn the injuries off on 2K,
18:39then we can talk about the Sixers as a contender.
18:41But what are we talking about here?
18:43The expectations were there last summer.
18:46They're not there now because this is not a team that you can trust
18:50to put a healthy product on the court.
18:53I mean, what's the best realistic case for Joel Embiid?
18:56Is it 50 games?
18:57And that's what this team was built to do, right?
18:59I was with the 76ers at the beginning of training camp last summer,
19:02or at the beginning of the season, rather.
19:04And I was told by Paul George and Joel Embiid,
19:06Joel said, I don't expect to be an 82-game player anymore.
19:10He's not even expecting to meet that 65 game.
19:12He's won an MVP before.
19:14The team around him is supposed to be able to endure.
19:17And with Jared McCain injuries, and we saw what happened with Paul George,
19:21it just hasn't been the case.
19:22And so you're going to load manage your way through a season
19:24with a group that's barely played together,
19:26and then suddenly somehow microwave chemistry for a deep playoff run
19:30that Joel Embiid has never yet been able to lead the Sixers on?
19:34There's a whole lot of ifs here.
19:36And that becomes even more difficult when you're looking at,
19:39okay, do you want to put B.J. Edgecombe in the starting lineup for them?
19:41You can't microwave that chemistry.
19:43There's not years of familiarity to rely on here.
19:47Yeah, and with Paul George, man, I thought about what happened
19:50with USA Basketball in 2014, and I've talked to him about how much
19:54that trickle down from that has affected his whole career.
19:57I'm always going to think what up with him with that injury.
19:59But I'm excited about B.J. Edgecombe.
20:01I think he could get back to the lineup tonight playing for the Sixers.
20:05But even that, 76ers fans are already saying welcome to the 76ers.
20:09But he's special. He's special.
20:11I've been watching him since he played in the Hoop Summit last year.
20:1428-10 the first game.
20:16Yes, it's summer league.
20:17But he has a different thing about him, an it about him.
20:21And if they go with this three-guard lineup, assuming these guys are healthy,
20:24B.J., Edgecombe, McCain, Maxey, I think they're pretty formidable
20:29if they could get some games out of Embiid with that lineup.
20:31I agree with you on them being a formidable lineup if they're all out there.
20:35You can see here them shooting around, B.J. Edgecombe and Jared McCain,
20:39who we didn't get to see a whole lot either.
20:40Jared McCain was on a track to potentially be a rookie of the year candidate.
20:44He was when he went down with that injury.
20:46But when you're thinking about the best case, Brian,
20:48for Joel Embiid and the 76ers this upcoming season,
20:51what does that look like?
20:52We talk about the Knicks.
20:54We talk about the Cavaliers.
20:55On paper, we should be talking about the 76ers as well.
21:00Okay, so I think what you're looking at,
21:02because you know Embiid will not be right at the beginning of the season,
21:04and now you know that Paul George will not be right at the beginning of the season.
21:07Right.
21:07So what you're having to hope for is that with V.J. Edgecombe,
21:12when they were able to get this major talent infusion with the return of some
21:16of their other young players who were bothered by injuries last year,
21:19that they will be able to at least be a top 16.
21:23And so that what you're hoping is that by the end of the season,
21:26that people have worked through their issues,
21:28are off their restrictions with various surgeries,
21:31and that they can be a top-level team.
21:34But these are all hopes and suppositions and projections, Malika.
21:38Like, yes, if that roster that you're looking at there
21:41is mostly healthy by the spring,
21:44you look at the ability to win four out of seven,
21:46yeah, I would favor them in a lot of series.
21:49But as McMahon said, it's very difficult for me to make an honest projection
21:53when they played together for 15 games for the last whole season.
21:58Yeah, look, this is a franchise,
22:00a team that has as much upside as anybody in the East,
22:04but more question marks than anybody in the East.
22:06And the simple fact,
22:07the Philadelphia 76ers are built on a flimsy foundation.
22:11They are built on a foundation of two max players
22:14who might be the two worst value contracts in the NBA.
22:18And it is not about talent.
22:20Joel Embiid and Paul George are incredibly talented players.
22:23It doesn't matter if you're doing that,
22:26sitting on the bench in street clothes.
22:28Well, Mark, we're always hearing Kendrick Perkins say
22:31that this is Tyrese Maxey's team.
22:33Even Joel Embiid nicknamed him the franchise.
22:35Maybe that's for a reason.
22:36Joel Embiid wants to win.
22:38It's so clear.
22:38I feel for Joel.
22:40By the way, we're talking about these injuries.
22:41These guys want to be out here.
22:43These guys want to solidify themselves as winners,
22:46but maybe this team needs to start going
22:47maybe a little bit more as Tyrese goes.
22:50Yeah, and the money that those two superstars make,
22:53what are you going to do with that?
22:54You can't move them.
22:55Right.
22:56It's hard to say that, though,
22:57when you have someone as talented as Joel Embiid
22:59still on your team.
23:00But the injuries combined with the money,
23:02like there's too much risk.
23:04Right.
23:04But Tyrese Maxey, hey, man, now's your time.
23:07That was well put.
23:08As much upside as there is question marks
23:10about an incredibly talented 76ers team.
23:13We do have one question answered, though,
23:14with some breaking news here new on NBA Today.
23:17Caitlin Clark will be participating
23:19in the WNBA All-Star Weekend three-point contest here.
23:24It makes sense.
23:25She's at home.
23:26She had the opportunity to win.
23:27We're talking about Sabrina Unescu versus Steph Curry.
23:30Would we see that iteration, right,
23:32in an NBA All-Star Weekend?
23:34And it was reported that Caitlin said,
23:35you know what?
23:36I want to hold off for WNBA All-Star.
23:39She's doing it in Indianapolis.
23:41We're going to have the kids longer and longer.
23:44We did get another look.
23:45Well, that's true.
23:46Number two overall pick, Dylan Harper, last night.
23:49No Ace Bailey here for the Jazz in this one.
23:52We're going to pick it up real late.
23:53Nine seconds left.
23:53The Spurs down two here.
23:54Dylan Harper, watch him work.
23:56Gets to his left for the layup.
23:58Game now tied at 86, team.
24:01Tim, eight seconds left in overtime.
24:05Watch Filipowski here.
24:06Big time summer league for him.
24:08Hey!
24:09Drives and throws it down with some authority
24:12to tie the game.
24:13You know that some coaches had some things to say about that.
24:15That being what you're tied to the game on.
24:17I don't know.
24:18You know what?
24:18I'm not going to lip read here,
24:19but I'm going to read this.
24:20Riley Minnick's little turnaround jumper
24:23at the buzzer to win the game.
24:24We've got to take one more look at this one.
24:26That was nice.
24:27And they didn't give it to Harper.
24:28He finished with 13 for the game.
24:30But this is what's so cool about summer league.
24:32There's so many characters you get to learn
24:34and they get an opportunity here
24:36at San Antonio gets the two-point win.
24:38Let's keep it with the theme
24:39of summer league standouts in Las Vegas.
24:42Let's go to the number four overall pick.
24:44Do we still call him Duke's con-knipple?
24:47Charlotte's con-knipple.
24:48Put up 16 points, 10 boards,
24:50his second Vegas game for the Hornets.
24:52Tim, how does he look so far?
24:53Well, got up to a slow start.
24:55Good to see him get a little something going here.
24:57Obviously, he's going to be a guy
24:59who's playing off the middle ball
25:01and I would guess knocking down a lot of open shots.
25:04Knocking down open shots,
25:05but if he does somehow soar in for a dunk,
25:08we will be calling him Flying Knipple.
25:10An homage to his family nickname.
25:12But checking in on the Bulls,
25:145'8", Yuki Karamora here
25:16has been showing off some flair for the Bulls.
25:18But check out Matas Buzelas
25:20in his second year as well.
25:2228 points, just 14 shots yesterday
25:24against the Pacers.
25:25Mark, what do you expect from Buzelas here?
25:27The leap he could make.
25:27I expect him to start growing
25:29into the face of the franchise.
25:31This is a kid I watched in G League Ignite.
25:33He's been growing special.
25:356'10", athletic, was in the dunk contest.
25:38Can shoot it.
25:38He's going to get better and better.
25:41And a hometown story as well.
25:44And by now, you've probably seen it.
25:45Johnny Furphy, his second year with the Pacers.
25:48One of the most vicious posters
25:51that you're ever going to see.
25:55Noah Senge, that face.
25:58He's got to find a photographer
25:59that took that shot.
26:00Because if that shot's not taken,
26:02we're not talking about it.
26:03It's the face.
26:06I don't know what highlight Noah Senge
26:08is going to have to have to erase this
26:10as being what he's most...
26:12It ain't going away.
26:14That's why people make business decisions.
26:17We do not mock people who play defense.
26:19You're right, Ryan.
26:20If you've been dunked on before,
26:22you'd understand.
26:23Just a little bit.
26:24It got us thinking about
26:25the best posters we've ever seen.
26:28And the face is made.
26:31Or the face is covered.
26:32And what does he look like?
26:33As it happens.
26:34Wow.
26:35Woo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo.
26:37Oh, no.
26:38That's...
26:39I don't know for this shit.
26:40I'm not commenting on that.
26:41And then we have DeAndre Jordan
26:44on poor Brandon Knight here.
26:47Hey!
26:48Woo!
26:49Okay.
26:50And then he's a step over.
26:51Now he's...
26:52The perfect thing makes Brandon
26:53feel a little better about himself.
26:55That's a little Bay Area,
26:55like at this face there.
26:57Or just got to get out of the way.
26:59At number three,
27:00Kawhi Leonard.
27:01A completely expressionless face.
27:04I don't remember this.
27:06Soft one-hander.
27:08He just...
27:10This is all business.
27:11All business.
27:13That's one of my favorite
27:14Mike Breen calls of all time.
27:16Kawhi Leonard in the stands
27:17going crazy.
27:19That's a good thing right here.
27:20At number two,
27:21Lob City Blake Griffin.
27:23Uh-oh.
27:24Yeah.
27:24With the putback on power.
27:25Why are we doing this to power?
27:27He forgot about this.
27:29Look out below.
27:31At least we're sparing.
27:32Didn't he get him like twice?
27:33I want to burst too now.
27:34There's still time.
27:35Oh.
27:35Oh.
27:37There is still time for our friend
27:39He's staying over the back.
27:40At number one, though,
27:41it's LeBron James.
27:43In 2013, Brian,
27:46you remember this one.
27:47Oh, my God.
27:49The whole arena in Boston
27:51felt this one.
27:53The Jet.
27:55Oh, Jet.
27:55Stare down.
27:56Oh, my God.
27:58He said after the game,
27:59I'm glad it was him.
28:01He had a good rivalry going
28:02with Jet Terry back then.
28:04What an all-time quote.
28:05He enjoyed it.
28:05He got teed up for Lord and over him, too.
28:07You know what?
28:07That's a tee that is well, well worth.
28:10In the garden.
28:10Oh, those are some top dunk faces,
28:14although Noah Senge quickly making the list.
28:17The 25 ESPYs, those are tomorrow night,
28:20but they aren't the only award show
28:21that's happening over the next 48 hours.
28:23The Sports Humanitarian Awards,
28:25now in its 11th year,
28:27is a platform that celebrates the athletes,
28:28the teams, and the sports industry professionals
28:30who make an impact in their communities
28:32throughout the world as well.
28:34The Los Angeles Clippers,
28:35they're a finalist for the team of the year
28:38for their investment in the community
28:39and helping raise money following the wildfires
28:42that hit Southern California in January.
28:44Here's a look at some of the work that they have done.
28:48I don't have a slow walk.
28:50No, I don't take shit.
28:51I got no love for the famous.
28:54If you want to play tough and want to hate this,
28:56I'll always show up.
28:58I don't have a slow walk.
29:00No, I don't take shit.
29:01I got no love for the famous.
29:04If you want to play tough and want to hate this,
29:07I'll always show up and make a statement.
29:09I don't have a slow walk.
29:10No, I don't take shit.
29:12I got no love for the famous.
29:14If you want to play tough and want to hate this,
29:17I'll always show up and make a statement.
29:19Everything I've done supporting local communities.
29:25Hey, before we bounce,
29:27we also have a very special guest
29:28that we've been looking forward to introducing you to
29:30all show long.
29:32In attendance at tonight's sports humanitarian dinner
29:36will be 18-year-old Dylan Langhoff.
29:38And Dylan was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma in 2023
29:42as he was getting ready for his junior year
29:44at Peoria Notre Dame High School
29:45where he played basketball, he played tennis,
29:48he was on the bass fishing team as well.
29:50He was busy.
29:51In collaboration with the V Foundation and Make-A-Wish,
29:53I'm thrilled to announce that Dylan's dream
29:56to soak in the excitement of the ESPYs,
29:58to meet some of his favorite sports athletes
30:00and to join us in coming through.
30:04Dylan, welcome to the show.
30:07We're so excited to have you here.
30:09Yeah, I'm so happy to be here.
30:09Thank you guys.
30:10And we understand that you're thinking about
30:12maybe going into the sports broadcasting industry as well.
30:14What's lined up for you over the next couple of hours
30:17and days here?
30:18So tonight, well, I'm here, obviously.
30:20And then tonight we have the sports humanitarian dinner
30:22at the Dolby Ballroom.
30:24And then tomorrow we are walking the red carpet
30:26and going to the ESPYs and hopefully meeting some people.
30:29Hopefully meeting some people.
30:30We're going to meet some people.
30:31Yeah, it's a star-studded lineup out there
30:33and not just Mark Spears,
30:34although he tends to roll through Big Poppin' as well.
30:37Is there anyone in particular that you're like,
30:39oh, I would really love to maybe meet this person?
30:42LeBron would be cool.
30:43Tyrese Halliburton.
30:44Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley.
30:47Michael Pittman Jr. maybe.
30:48I'm a Colts fan, so.
30:49Okay.
30:49Yeah, anyone from the Colts would be really cool.
30:51You're a Colts fan.
30:52You're a tennis fan.
30:54Yeah.
30:54You're a fan of Caitlin Clark as well, I heard.
30:57Yes.
30:58And we thought that maybe we would try out,
31:00I mean, you want to be a sportscaster,
31:01we would read a couple of highlights together.
31:04But before that,
31:05someone sent me a very special message
31:06that they wanted you to see.
31:07Take a look.
31:09Hey, Dylan.
31:10It's Caitlin Clark.
31:10I heard you get to be in studio with everyone today,
31:12so I just wanted to send you a little video
31:14and tell you hello and thank you for your support.
31:17I heard you're a really big fan of myself,
31:18so I really appreciate it.
31:20I hope you have an amazing day with everybody.
31:22I want you to know I'm sending you all my best,
31:25and hopefully one day we can get you out to a fever game as well.
31:28So take care and have an amazing day.
31:31A little message from Caitlin Clark as well.
31:34I mean, we wanted to start off your experience here at ESPN, right,
31:39and we're so appreciative to Caitlin for helping us out with that.
31:41We also saw that you had a huge reaction to the Johnny Furphy dunk.
31:45I did.
31:46Yeah, I did.
31:46You think we should all take another look together?
31:48Oh, great.
31:49We're not going to need these highlights, right?
31:51Because in case you missed it, Johnny Furphy,
31:53I like to do it with his accent just a little bit.
31:55I mean, what do you think?
31:56One of the best dunks we've ever seen in summer league?
31:57It was a really, really good dunk.
31:59Take us through this.
32:00All right, so we just yams it back on him.
32:02Hand in the face.
32:04The defender's face is just,
32:06he's never living that down.
32:08When the kids in the stands are acting that way.
32:12Yeah, I know.
32:13That was my face, too.
32:14Tyrese Halliburton, one of your favorite players,
32:16weighed in as well.
32:17And your favorite player's favorite player, Johnny Furphy.
32:21And then look at this.
32:23I mean, the photo of Noah Senge.
32:26We've got to start blurring the poor guy's face.
32:29Cool and unusual.
32:30Oh, that's getting framed in Furphy's house.
32:32I think that it probably should be.
32:34And we thought that we would look.
32:36We have a franchise here on NBA Today.
32:38It's called Top of the Top.
32:39So in honor of that dunk,
32:41we thought we'd take a look at some of the best summer league dunks of all time.
32:45You want to take a look with us?
32:46Yeah.
32:46Let's do it.
32:46All right, 2019.
32:47This is Jackson Hayes here, soaring in for the slam.
32:52Woo!
32:54What was underneath him?
32:55That is nasty work.
32:56Yeah, that's, I guess you can take charge of the summer league.
32:59It's not picked up.
33:00JaVale McGee.
33:01Okay.
33:02It'll trade him.
33:02Yeah.
33:03Rock-a-bye, baby.
33:07Young JaVale, too.
33:08Oh, yeah.
33:08Look at that slam.
33:09Pre-Rattail, pre-all of it.
33:11And then Giannis dunking on Rudy.
33:14Baby Giannis, too.
33:16Yeah.
33:17What about this one?
33:18Six-foot-nine, Giannis.
33:18Take us through this one.
33:20We got Paul George driving in for the slam here.
33:23Young Paul George is, yeah, again, just taking it all.
33:27Oh, ho, ho, ho, ho.
33:27That's disgusting.
33:28Woo!
33:29And then we go to 2022.
33:31Were you there for this one, Mark?
33:32This is Gary, Peyton, the second.
33:35No problem.
33:36When a little guy can dunk dunk.
33:38His dad don't, I don't mops.
33:39I mean.
33:41And then this one.
33:43Oh!
33:44Right into the celebration, too.
33:46No, I always got this.
33:47I don't know if there's ever going to be a better summer league dunk.
33:50But we got another one for you.
33:51This is 2007.
33:53Rudy Gay going baseline.
33:55Standard definition.
33:56Hey!
33:58Is that E in lane?
34:01Oh, E.
34:03And then Damian Lillard announcing himself.
34:07We hope to see him back on the floor.
34:09I know.
34:09Sooner rather than later.
