00:00We've got our first glimpse of the 2025 draft class on the court this holiday weekend.
00:05Welcome to Game Time.
00:06Chris Miles here with Sean Powell to the people.
00:09California Classic tipped off.
00:11Second overall pick, Dylan Harper, will not play as he's dealing with a groin injury.
00:15But we did get to see the Los Angeles Lakers against the Golden State Warriors.
00:19There's Steph Curry in the house, Dolphin Connect.
00:21Bronny James in attendance but not playing for the Lakers.
00:25Coles Connect, 10 points, 3 for 13 from the field.
00:29Kind of an off night for him, Sean.
00:31But DJ Stewart, he had 20 points.
00:35And Cole Swider, 6 for 8 from long range.
00:38He had 24.
00:40Two guys trying to get an opportunity in the NBA.
00:42Yeah, we'll see what they do in the summer league.
00:44But don't connect with the name in this game for the Lakers.
00:47Moving on to the second half.
00:49How about a dime?
00:51And it's dropped right here.
00:52Jayden Shackelford doing the honors.
00:54Chris Manning, shut out of a cannon on the finish.
01:00We want to see a show in the summer league.
01:02Isaiah Mobley, big brother of Evan Mobley with the big man moves.
01:07Let's double up on Mobley.
01:09Here he's hitting a corner three.
01:14Jackson Rowe helping to put this one away.
01:17And the Warriors, they win 89-84.
01:22But really, for the Los Angeles Lakers, we saw Bronny James, right?
01:27And we know that LeBron James, all the off-season news surrounding him,
01:32but they really seem like they're on the Luka timeline now for the Lakers.
01:35Yeah, I would say so.
01:36LeBron James is only going to have another year or two left in the NBA.
01:41So this team has to be built around Luka Doncic, his skills, just find the right pieces, right?
01:49Big man who can catch the lobs, outside shooter when he can kick it to him.
01:54But that's going to take some time.
01:56It's not going to happen this year.
01:57Well, you know what else is not going to happen this year?
01:59LeBron James getting out on a golf course looking good.
02:02What do you think about this swing?
02:03I know you're an avid golfer.
02:05LeBron, working on that these days.
02:07Well, okay, so how many championships has LeBron James won?
02:10Four.
02:11Four!
02:12Every time he hits that ball, four!
02:14You remind him how many championships he's won.
02:17So you buying with LeBron James and his representation are selling that, like,
02:21look, he's not looking for a trade.
02:23Pick up the player option.
02:25He just wants to be in L.A.
02:26There's always mystique drama around LeBron James.
02:30I mean, who knows?
02:32I mean, I'm going to just take him for his word.
02:33He wants to finish out with the Lakers.
02:36But, you know, again, with him, you just don't know.
02:40He still has some skills left at his age.
02:42He still has some, you know, just some hops with the wear and tear on his body.
02:48But with every NBA player, no matter how good you are,
02:52you're going to hit the wall at some point.
02:53Well, we've seen DeAndre inequality buyout pick up.
02:57Do you believe we'll see more Lakers fireworks via trades now that we're past July 4th?
03:03It's hard to imagine because I just don't see the assets.
03:06You know, they're not going to give up on Austin Reeds.
03:08And I just don't see anybody else on that team that another team really wants so bad.
03:15Look at the Lakers now.
03:16I think this is a team that's going to start the season.
03:19But we'll see what happens at the trade deadline.
03:21Maybe something opens up.
03:23Well, we've seen Shaolin Wimby.
03:25What about soccer Wimby?
03:27Here.
03:28A little bicycle kick action.
03:29Oh.
03:29You know, if I'm the Spurs, I don't want to see him on the floor, on the ground, on anywhere.
03:35I know he loves soccer.
03:37That's a big European thing.
03:38But, Wimby, that's not your game.
03:41Yeah, it doesn't look like he's Pascal Siakam, if you will.
03:45And that one.
03:45Khalil Ware, all-rookie campaign.
03:48Carter Bryant, 14th pick in the draft by the San Antonio Spurs.
03:52He was one for six from long range.
03:55There's the make.
03:56Remember Kyra Lewis?
03:58Oh, yeah.
03:58Here he is dropping dons.
03:59Okay, New Orleans.
04:01Here is to Khalil Ware.
04:03All right.
04:03Then Kyra Lewis again to Kashaad Johnson on the fast break.
04:10All right.
04:10This is what we need to see.
04:12Absolutely.
04:13Miami up 32-29 at the half.
04:16Kyra Lewis making the highlights multiple times.
04:20You know, that's something that's needed in Miami.
04:22A ball distributor.
04:23Khalil Ware again.
04:26We saw the dunk.
04:27Now the fade away from the footer.
04:29Those are the skills we need to see from where.
04:33Chibuzu Ogbo getting in on the highlight.
04:38Ankles.
04:39Ankles.
04:40Floor seats is what they say.
04:42Okay.
04:42I'll take it.
04:44Oseo Oseo with the steal.
04:47And going the other way.
04:49Why not?
04:50Why not all the way, huh?
04:51But back to Carter Bryant.
04:54See him move without the ball.
04:56Pulling up.
04:58Dropping the jumper.
05:00Eric Stephenson also in on the action.
05:03Miami gets the win.
05:0482-69 over the San Antonio Spurs.
05:09But it's Carter Bryant that we're focused on here, right?
05:1214th overall pick.
05:157 points.
05:167 fouls.
05:171 for 6 from the field.
05:19From 3 in his debut.
05:20Well, you know, he wasn't a big offensive player in Arizona.
05:23But to see him do that, the stop and pop, that's got to be encouraging.
05:27And this is a guy who made his hat on defense.
05:30But look at his movement.
05:30Look how he moves without the ball.
05:32And the pull-up.
05:32Now, that was a confidence pull-up right there.
05:36So, yeah.
05:37And bringing the ball down.
05:38Showing some handles.
05:39Let's see what he does here.
05:40Goes up.
05:43Yeah, there's the mistake.
05:44But, hey, it's summer league, Chris.
05:46It happens.
05:48Yeah, well, Carter Bryant, some things to clean up.
05:51Can't wait to see him.
05:53The Houston Rockets have parted ways with the 20th pick from the 2023 NBA draft.
05:58Cam Whitmore headed to the nation's capital for two second-round picks.
06:01Whitmore has played in 98 games over his first two seasons with just five starts.
06:06Just 17 minutes a game.
06:08Sean, Whitmore has lamented about wanting more playing time.
06:12Seems like he's going to a situation where that is going to happen.
06:15Yeah, that's the tradeoff.
06:17You're going to go to a situation where that can happen.
06:19But, of course, you're going to take a step down in terms of winning.
06:22The Wizards are a developing team.
06:23They're a few years away from possibly making playoffs.
06:26And that's if everything goes right.
06:28But Cam Whitmore has shown a lot of promise in his limited playing time.
06:32He can score.
06:33He can score off the bounce.
06:34But, again, we don't know how good a player he is until he gets that playing time.
06:39That was not going to happen with the Rockets, who added depth.
06:42Now he goes to the Wizards.
06:43He can compete with other young players.
06:45And we'll see what he can do.
06:46Yeah, you say other young players.
06:48I mean, four guys from last year's draft on that team, including Bub Carrington, Alex Sarwatt,
06:54standout rookie seasons.
06:56And Trey Johnson, sixth pick in this year's draft, some believe could be one of the best scorers
07:01in this year's draft.
07:02Okay, Sean, do you smell that?
07:05That's new money coming the way of the champ SGA, Jaron Jackson Jr., and Kyrie Irvin.
07:12They've all agreed to terms on contract extensions.
07:15But, you know, you don't see on this screen.
07:17Who's that?
07:17One young ice Trey, also extension eligible, starting July 6th.
07:24He could sign for up to $229 million over the next four years.
07:29Look, we know who he is, three-time all-star, has the most assists in the NBA since the
07:34start of the 2018 season.
07:36But, Sean, what's the latest on him?
07:38He's sitting here like, clock's ticking, where's my money?
07:42Yeah, I think you can quote-unquote bank it.
07:45I'd say what you did there.
07:46Well, Trey Young is the centerpiece of this team.
07:49I mean, he had a big voice in the draft and free agency, getting the kill.
07:54Alexander Walker here, and the team is built around his skills.
07:58I think that he's going to get that extension.
08:02And how does he fit with this team going forward?
08:05All of a sudden, he's in a leadership position.
08:07How does he respond?
08:09Is he a little bit more efficient shooting?
08:11Because that's kind of tailed off.
08:13But assists, as you can see there, Chris, that has soared.
08:16I mean, way ahead of Nikola Jokic, who's won several MVPs in this time period, James Harden,
08:22Russell Westbrook, also MVPs in future Hall of Famers, Trey Young, yet and still ahead
08:28of that list.
08:30All right, so here's the deal.
08:31Let's say Trey Young doesn't receive this extension.
08:35Now the Hawks, they seem like their plan would fire.
08:37He could enter free agency next summer if he doesn't take his player option.
08:40Do you think they'd do that?
08:41Well, I think with Trey Young, he has to respond in terms of where's his heart?
08:46You know, he's from Oklahoma City.
08:49He saw how Shagos Alexander took a young team all the way to the championship.
08:53Does he feel that he can do that with this young team in Atlanta in due time?
08:58Once he decides where his heart is, and I think that's where the domino effect's going
09:02to happen, whether they keep him, whether they sign and trade him.
09:05Well, Zion Williamson eligible for $128 million contract extension.
09:09A little complicated here, though.
09:11The top pick for the 2019 NBA draft is under contract through 2028, but those two years
09:18are not guaranteed.
09:20So Zion, who's averaged 35 games played over his six years, essentially would get that
09:26money guaranteed.
09:27Do you think Joe Dumars and the new regime in New Orleans pull the trigger on that?
09:31Yeah, see, that's tough to justify.
09:32I think Zion's got to show, number one, you know, good health, and number two, being in
09:39shape.
09:39He really hasn't had either for much of his career, and that's why he hasn't played that
09:44many games.
09:44We do know how good he is when he does play, but I think this new regime led by Joe Dumars
09:50has to see that.
09:51They have to see that before they make a big financial commitment to him.
09:55You say before they make a big financial commitment, do you think he's traded before that?
10:00I think it's possible, but where's his trade value right now?
10:03I mean, they would be trading low.
10:05I think the rest of the league is looking at Zion the same way the Pelicans are looking
10:08at Zion.
10:09We have to see something sustainable.
10:11We need good health, and we need you to be in shape.
10:14And then we'll see, we'll make up our mind up in terms of what your value is.
10:18Well, Austin Reeves thinks he knows his value, betting on himself, turned down a four-year
10:24$98 million extension, has a player option for next year.
10:29Do you anticipate that gamble will pay off in a bigger contract than that $96 million one
10:35that was on the table?
10:36Yeah, it's incredible how a player who wasn't drafted made a good financial decision by turning
10:41down all that loot, because he did.
10:43Austin Reeves has a, he's in big demand around the league, right?
10:47Now, as to what price, we don't know.
10:50But if he hits the free agent market next summer, I think he'll get a lot of interest.
10:54So he could go from what, $24 million to $44 million a year?
10:58Do you think that's feasible?
10:59Well, I don't know how big the leap is, because we don't know what teams will have that kind
11:03of money to spend.
11:04But we're going to see a hike in the salary cap, because of, you know, media rights and potentially
11:08expansion down the line.
11:09So, and he's going to be on the free agent market where maybe he's one of the better
11:14players in the free agent market.
11:15So we don't know how much he can get and how much he can demand until we figure out what
11:21teams are out there looking for help and how much money they have to spend.
11:24Well, we knew the Knicks were looking for help when they went and got Mikael Bridges.
11:28Now he's up for a four-year, $156 million extension.
11:32This is an Ironman who helped the Knicks to get to an Eastern Conference Finals for the
11:36first time in 25 years.
11:38But, Sean, they also gave up eight draft picks for him.
11:42Do you think he'll re-sign a new year?
11:44Yeah, I think they will, because that's the risk you take when you trade for a player who
11:48has very little left on his contract.
11:50You basically decide, hey, you know what?
11:52We're going to sign him to extension when that day comes.
11:54So I think they had an idea how much they're going to have to pay, and I think they made peace
11:59with that.
12:00The Knicks right now, they can't afford a disruption.
12:03They've got a new coach coming in.
12:04They feel that they're championship-ready.
12:07You're not championship-ready when you, you know, decline to sign one of your main pieces.
12:12So I think he's going to re-sign there, and they're going to see how far this team can
12:17go with him.
12:17And, you know, the Nova Knicks thing is a real thing, right?
12:20Jalen Brunson's their best player, their all-NBA guy.
12:24Bridges, obviously, a college teammate with him.
12:26And you were explaining to me earlier, like, hey, Jalen Brunson took less so that they
12:30can make moves like this.
12:31Exactly.
12:32So I think this is all going to happen.
12:34This is all sort of like a, you know, a master plan for the next three or four years for the
12:39Knicks.
12:39They built this team this way.
12:41He's a very good defender, and they need good defenders.
12:43They've got now most of the pieces, but they've got to put it all together.
12:47How about this?
12:48The going rate for one Devin Booker, $75 million a year.
12:52That's what his extension is looking at.
12:55Two years, $150 million.
12:59That would put him under contract through the year 2030.
13:03Do you think this is a done deal for the Suns?
13:05Well, I do think he's going to come back.
13:07That doesn't mean they have to give him two years, $150 million.
13:10That's what he's eligible to get.
13:12Now, maybe they get together and say, well, it's a little bit rich for us.
13:16You know, we're not contending for anything, but I think this is one of the rare instances
13:22in the NBA where a player stays with one team.
13:25You've seen, you know, players bounce around here and here.
13:28I don't get that with Devin Booker.
13:29I think there's a mutual interest in keeping this relationship going.
13:33Yeah, I don't know if you've seen Jeremiah Fears' seventh pick in the draft.
13:37He wears the number zero, as in zero fears.
13:40Up next, we head down to the Bayou to get close to personal, the Pelicans' newest draft picks.
