🔥 On GET UP, Tim MacMahon delivers a bold take: next season could be LeBron James’ last with the Lakers, and Dallas Mavericks may be the only realistic landing spot if he pursues a title run with former teammates Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving.

MacMahon argues that a trade to the Mavs doesn’t make sense for Dallas—he’d cost several rotation players—but a buyout scenario post-season could allow LeBron to chase one more ring in a familiar setting with a strong supporting cast ([turn0search1], [turn0search3]). Still, DraftKings odds heavily favor LeBron staying in LA at 87.5%, with Dallas a distant second at ~11% ([turn0news13]).

00:00Let's just kind of cook. Brian Windhorst, it's time for a windy watch. What's going on in Phoenix?
00:07Well, this is some good news for the Suns. They are locking Devin Booker into a two-year contract
00:12extension at about $145 million. That's right. It'll be the largest contract extension in average
00:19annual salary in NBA history, nudging out Shea Gildas-Alexanders that he signed last week.
00:25Now, I just want to point something out. This new contract is for starting three years from now.
00:31In 2029 and in 2030, $70 million will be somewhat routine for top players in the NBA,
00:38just to get you past your shock down. Yeah, that's good news for players in the NBA.
00:43What about Denver? What's going on with Jokic and the Nuggets?
00:48Ah, this did not get done. So Jokic was offered a three-year contract extension by the Nuggets.
00:54He turned it down. This is not a stunner to the Nuggets. Their owner, Josh Kroenke,
00:59said a couple of weeks ago that they would offer it and he would expect him to turn it down.
01:03The reason he turned it down is because if he waits until next year, he can lock in an additional
01:08year and an additional $77 million. But it's never great news when your franchise player says no
01:16with extension. Tim McMahon, what do you think about what's going on in Denver?
01:19Could we be looking at Jokic on a different team at some point?
01:24I mean, listen, you never say never. And I know people are going to, the Photoshop folks
01:29are going to have him in a Lakers uniform, maybe a Heat uniform. We can talk Clippers,
01:34so on and so forth. The simple fact of the matter, though, is I don't believe that Nikola Jokic
01:39is looking around and considering other possibilities. This is a pure financial play.
01:44As Wendy said, there's 77 million reasons for him not to sign this extension right now.
01:51That is an awful lot of reasons and that makes an awful lot of sense. Wendy, one more. What updates
01:56do you have for us on LeBron and the Lakers?
02:00None. There is none. There is no communication really between the Lakers and LeBron. He has
02:05picked up his option. The Lakers are expecting to see him in the fall. LeBron and his camp are still
02:10watching the Lakers offseason. But I can't emphasize this enough, Dan. The Lakers' primary
02:16objective this offseason is not LeBron. It is Luka Doncic. He can sign a contract extension of up to
02:23four years starting on August 2nd, although I suspect Hill's decision will come much later than
02:28that. That is their primary thing. LeBron is now being treated as a one-year player in the Lakers,
02:35for better or worse. Tim, is this it? Like this last year for LeBron on the Lakers?
02:42I mean, it feels like the last dance. I don't know when we'll hear from LeBron next. If it's
02:47not until media day, there will be a lot of ears tuned into that. It's as awkward of a limbo situation
02:54as we've seen maybe since the last dance with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen. You just don't
03:00see a legend like this put on the back burner by a franchise, but it makes sense considering he's in
03:07his 40s. Luka Doncic is just entering his prime, and the Lakers have to figure out how to build a
03:12contender around Luka, and LeBron is very unlikely to be a part of that. They have to figure out how to
03:20build a long-term contender around Luka, but LeBron, as we know from every show we did last week,
03:25is interested in trying to compete for a championship before he is done. Have they done
03:29enough, Tim, to build a contender around Luka and LeBron for this year?
03:35No. I mean, a play-in contender, sure. But no, they're not a top team in the Western Conference.
03:42They're not a threat to the Oklahoma City Thunder. They were a three-seed last year. I'm not saying
03:47they're going to be a bad team, but we're not putting the Lakers in the conversation of contenders
03:52after they got smoked in five games in the first round. DeAndre, okay, fine. They haven't made
04:00major upgrades on this roster this summer. Meanwhile, this is new. Earlier this morning,
04:06Giannis Antetokounmpo was doing a live stream, and he was asked about... Giannis trying to help
04:12out the show. He was asked about potentially playing in New York. Listen to what he had to say.
04:17LA to Texas bat. New York, Texas bat. Hell nah. A lot of people have tried to convince me.
04:23Tried to convince me to go and play there and stuff. Oh, no. So you're staying in Milwaukee?
04:32Probably. Probably. We'll see.
04:36Wendy? Something or nothing.
04:41For first of all, congrats to that individual who was with him. I'm sorry I don't know who it was. I
04:45couldn't see real well. For asking the question that a lot of us want to know, okay? And so...
04:50But the thing about it is, is that he didn't give a definitive answer, and I'm certainly not going
04:54to analyze something he said seaside in Greece. But what I will say is, the we'll see, that is
05:01essentially what there's about five or six NBA teams banking on. The we'll see. And I know it
05:06sounds trivial, but for years, Giannis was completely locked in. Him saying, we'll see, backs up what
05:14Shams has been saying this entire summer, which is that he might be more open-minded than he was in
05:19the past. And I would say the same thing. Probably in Milwaukee, but we'll see. And now I can quote
05:25Giannis on that. Thank you very much.
05:26Right. That gives us license to talk about this. He was asked, are you staying in Milwaukee? If he
05:31had said yes, then we don't talk about it. Tim, he said, we'll see. What do you make of it?
05:38Well, Wendy, that was speed. I, you know, he's a famous, I think, streamer. I mean, come on,
05:43you got to know these things. We'll see. We've went, Giannis has been in we'll see mode for years. He
05:49was in we'll see mode. And then they went out and got Drew Holiday. And then he assigned his extension.
05:54He got back in we'll see mode. They went out. They got Damian Lillard. He signed an extension.
06:00He's in we'll see mode right now. Miles Turner's not, not, not getting a long-term commitment out
06:06of Giannis. And, uh, listen, if taxes are the concern, I think there's a team in South Florida
06:12that, uh, has no state income taxes. There's some teams in Texas with no state income taxes,
06:17but there will be plenty of teams lining up and position themselves to pounce. If Giannis
06:24finally, eventually decides it's time for him to go to greener pastures. All right. We'll
06:29definitely keep an eye on that. We'll see, uh, on Giannis. That's the status of his situation,
06:34which is very, very interesting. Also interesting. Cooper flag making his NBA summer league debut
06:41tonight against Bronny James and the Lakers. Uh, tickets are not cheap. Average ticket prices
06:46according to vivid seats up to two 23, but the cheapest coming in around 85 bucks and a courtside
06:51seat would run you about $3,000. So Tim indicates high expectations for the number one overall draft
06:58pick. Is it fair to expect him to be a star right away? I mean, obviously a lot of hype, uh, right
07:06away. I think it's a little bit much if you define star as a guy who drives winning show me the 18 year
07:13old who's just coming to the NBA and been a driving force and winning. I think eventually he's going to
07:19be the face of the franchise. The luxury that he has is he doesn't have to come in and carry the
07:24Mavericks right away. I know Kyrie Irving's out for at least the first half of the season, but they'll
07:28have Anthony Davis. They'll have a perennial all-star and Cooper flag and just kind of come in as a role
07:35player, as a high level role player and grow from there. Wendy, I got about 30 seconds. What do you
07:39make of the Mavs? Especially if Kyrie comes back. Let's just agree, Dan, that this is the best thing that
07:44we got going on on a Thursday in July. So let's get excited about this game, but let's also agree
07:49we're not going to overreact to what happens with Cooper flag either tonight or any time in summer
07:55league. I don't know if we're going to agree to that. I think the best thing we got going on
07:58is Giannis saying, we'll see. I think that's great. I want to do another hour, but, um, but yeah,
08:05we're, we're not going to do that. Do you know why? Because first take.
