00:00Dad, Dad, Dad.
00:07My brother says a lot that he wished I wasn't the one who found him originally.
00:13But I was.
00:17Honestly, I don't want to cheer anymore because I didn't get into Howard.
00:23Especially after I didn't get into Howard.
00:25I got into East Bay. Morehouse, they never sent me any email information about like if I got it or not.
00:31But I checked like my spam and my junk and my regular emails. I checked all of it.
00:35We will now be able to start planning for in-person graduation.
00:39We got the messages. Everybody was like bouncing off the wall.
00:43They are so excited about graduation.
00:55One thing that was very clear to us this year for graduation was if the kids didn't graduate, their chances of succeeding in life was significantly reduced.
01:10I think that's the thing that I worry about the most.
01:12Sometimes it's a little bit too late because the resources might not have been set up and placed on time.
01:19It takes a whole lot of people to get these students where we want them and where they want themselves.
01:25That's why it's so important for us to be here.
01:27If I'm the first to tell you, let me be the first to tell you, you can do it.
01:32It's been really rough.
01:34And as a counselor, we're hearing all of the things that are happening for our students.
01:39Death and tragedy and sadness and depression and anxiety and all of these things.
01:45While recognizing we're still part of this school system that says like, you got to pass your classes.
01:50And so trying to bridge that divide and work with teachers and try to create individual plans,
01:57but also recognize their expertise and what they're trying to do for students.
02:02It's been a lot. It's been a lot.
02:15Emily, I probably know the best.
02:20We check in once a week to kind of just like go over what her assignments are.
02:25With things related to mental health, she was just really having a hard time motivating herself.
02:34So right now I'm doing American government and econ.
02:38So I'm doing both technically the semester classes, but I'm doing both then this semester.
02:43So those are the two that I need to pass so that I can graduate.
02:49I would say at least 50% of my time right now is doing individual check-ins with kids about their final stuff to pass for graduation.
03:00Now we're in the home stretch to graduate, to walk the stage.
03:05That's, I feel like that's the main goal right now.
03:08It's coming soon.
03:10Work all day till my feet get so.
03:22Keep on working till the whistle blow.
03:25Oh, when the night time come.
03:28It's on when the night time come.
03:30Wear this mask on my face all day.
03:33Smiling like I'm never doing what you say.
03:36Oh, till the night time come.
03:39It's on when the night time come.
03:41Wear this mask on my face all day.
03:44Smiling like I'm never doing what you say.
03:47Oh, till the night time come.
03:50It's on when the night time come.
03:53It ain't really over, it has just begun.
03:55We gonna be alright when the night time come.
03:58Tired of trying to figure what I might become.
04:01I just wanna sing my song when the night time come.
04:05All right, so let's just go down the line.
04:18Cuz you have a lot, you have at least one, two, three, four.
04:23You know that, that's not what matters, you know.
04:26Yes it is, five, six schools at least that you got acceptance to.
04:29They weren't the big one that we were all sitting here and waiting for.
04:32At a certain point, we still gotta look forward and figure out where we gonna be.
04:37Mr. Kim, he has a comeback to like everything.
04:40He's definitely also a support.
04:42Like, oh, keep your head up, no.
04:45That's just like when I didn't get into the UCs.
04:48He's like, okay, but how many other schools did you get into though?
04:50And when I didn't get to Howard.
04:52But you gotta stop all these other schools.
04:53And I'm trying to help him understand.
04:55Those other schools are not Howard.
04:57That's not where I want to go.
04:58I don't know where I'm gonna go.
05:00Cuz I just want to-
05:02That's okay, that's okay.
05:03We don't have to know right this second.
05:05You have to make the decision by May 1st.
05:08That's for all schools?
05:13Go ahead and look at that calendar.
05:15No it's not.
05:16That's okay.
05:17When is May 1st?
05:19Too many weeks since not enough time.
05:22Two weeks.
05:23Two weeks.
05:44I've been to the barbershop once since the pandemic started.
05:47So I'm definitely planning on taking it down.
05:51Get a nice taper and hopefully start going out again.
05:56Vaccinated, all that kind of stuff.
06:04This is the moment that we've all been waiting for since the pandemic began more than a year ago.
06:10We have seen a substantial reduction in the spread of COVID-19.
06:15More schools across the country are starting to reopen.
06:1838 states have eased restrictions.
06:20Some people want to go back, some people don't.
06:22But me personally, I want to go back.
06:24The number of new coronavirus cases is dropping.
06:26Prompting more states to lift all COVID restrictions.
06:29The vaccine efficacy gives us hope.
06:32The U.S. last week reported the lowest COVID-19 tally since the onset of the pandemic.
06:38There's gonna be enough of a drop of COVID cases and more vaccines.
06:41It would be okay to attend classes in person.
06:44Capacity limits are gone, even in malls, movie theaters, sports, and entertainment venues.
06:49Healthcare workers continue to remind people that the pandemic isn't over.
06:54Looking back, wow, like this was my high school experience.
06:58It's kind of gives people like an opportunity to like be optimistic.
07:02Okay, yeah, like life is good.
07:04No more indoor-outdoor mask restrictions if you've been fully vaccinated.
07:16I was watching this video on like TikTok, and it was showing us how small we are.
07:20Like it was showing us the world.
07:21And it was like Neptune, and then Mars, and then the Sun, the Milky Way.
07:26And then it showed like more universes, and then just kept getting bigger and bigger and bigger.
07:31And then it showed like planets you don't even know about.
07:34It was just showing us how small we are.
07:36You know, it's like, dang, like, I don't know.
07:38It's a lot.
07:39So many things that like blow your mind.
07:45With the rolling out of these vaccines, I think hopefully, you know, we'll be in a better place by summer, by June.
07:51You just want that highball taper, like last time?
08:01Yeah, the usual, yeah.
08:02All right, for sure.
08:03What else have been on?
08:04Grad school.
08:06Finally figured out where I'm going next year.
08:09Where is that?
08:10UC Riverside.
08:12That's what's up, bro.
08:13Proud of you, man.
08:14Thank you, bro.
08:15You got the scally ride, whatever.
08:16Yeah, full ride, for sure.
08:18Whenever you're getting paid, invest in yourself, right?
08:20Your hair ain't been this long, probably like.
08:22Bro, years, bro.
08:23It was probably was middle school last time.
08:25It was, it was this long.
08:27Yeah, this is probably what's up.
08:29Have a good time.
08:30That's what's up.
08:31Do hella clients get hair on their masks?
08:33Most of them don't wear it while they get sick.
08:35Oh, for real?
08:36I can take it off?
08:37You only got to wear it right now.
08:38Okay, for sure.
08:41It's hella funny.
08:42You know, I've been doing Zoom with the students all year.
08:44But I went to the football game and they was like,
08:46Oh, I didn't recognize you with the long hair.
08:48I'm like, y'all, y'all see me on Zoom with the long hair the whole time.
08:51But it's because, you know, in person, they recognize me having the short hair.
08:54So.
08:55That's like your Zoom person with the whole other person.
08:57Yeah, exactly.
08:58Yeah, exactly.
09:07Whew!
09:13Appreciate your round, bro.
09:14Yes, sir.
09:15Yeah, man.
09:28Do you think to go to the grassy area?
09:29This is not a safe route.
09:30That is your bed.
09:31Oh, Katie.
09:32Don't help me.
09:33Like, I'm just old.
09:34You are.
09:35Wait till y'all see me at graduation.
09:36Oh, here you go.
09:37Here you go.
09:38Here you go.
09:39Here you go.
09:40If we was to have a prom, bro.
09:41Oh, my God.
09:42Y'all would not.
09:43Nobody would be talking to me at home.
09:44Like, a lot of schools have prom.
09:45I know.
09:46Not everyone.
09:47Everybody have prom.
09:48Freedom is out there.
09:49Oh, God.
09:50I know.
09:51Everybody have prom.
09:52Freedom and heritage both have prom.
09:53I know.
09:54If we was to have a prom, bro.
09:55Oh, my God.
09:56Y'all would not.
09:57Nobody would be talking to me at home.
09:58Like, a lot of schools have prom.
10:01I know.
10:02Not everyone is out there.
10:03Freedom and heritage both have prom.
10:04Yeah.
10:05Can we start prom, then?
10:06We're gonna try to pass.
10:07Single file.
10:08No.
10:09Oh, the people don't.
10:11That's not.
10:12Good afternoon.
10:13Let's give these students huge.
10:14You could put it in.
10:15No.
10:16Good afternoon. Let's give these students a huge round of applause. Congratulations. Huge one.
10:24All right, the Janet Romo MNO Grant Scholarship. The first one goes to Javonte Sellers.
10:36Thank you. I appreciate it. Thank you. To present our Deer Valley Counselor Scholarship to Miss
10:42Emily Woodall. I'm very proud to present the Counseling Scholarship this year. We have two
10:48amazing recipients, both of whom have been part of our College Access Program.
10:54So our first scholarship tonight goes to Ebi Oyamhaman.
11:05Our second award recipient, Cadence Bentoncourt.
11:07I was really proud of myself for that. But next week, it's May 1st. It's National College
11:16Decision Day. So I need to make my choice. I walk around just with a feeling of uncertainty.
11:26Last night, my mind was just all over the place, had a couple of breakdowns. This all could be
11:31avoided if only Howard would have accepted me. You know, if Howard would have accepted me,
11:37I just would have been set in stone, no kind of doubts. But it didn't happen.
11:45I started having second thoughts. But if I don't go to college, then what will I do? Still be here?
11:50The Annadelle and Randy Fontana Memorial Scholarship to Raven Ibona, who is not here.
12:04My dad passed away. And, you know, it took a real big toll on us and our family because,
12:22you know, we're all really close. I mean, even though my parents, they were separated,
12:26you know, we were all still, you know, a family. Family is everything to us over here. You know,
12:35my parents made sure I took care of my younger siblings. And now I have kids. So I look at Raven,
12:41I look at AJ as, you know, the same way, you know, to take care of, you know, of my kids. We all kind of
12:48take care of each other.
12:49Back in the Philippines, we have like a tradition. They saying that when he died,
12:58they said, they said the experience around here, you know, and then on the 40 days,
13:03they said that they're going to go up, you know, saying goodbye. So we did the mass and we
13:09say goodbye, you know, totally goodbye.
13:11Thank you, God, for this food. Thank you for waking us up this morning.
13:18Thank you for our dad who passed away. We love you in the name of the Lord. Amen.
13:23Today, we're doing a Kamayan feast, which is a traditional Filipino meal
13:28where we eat with your hands, which is what Kamayan means to eat with your hands.
13:32This also goes by another name, Udo Fight, where soldiers, like, they would just place food on like
13:38a table with banana leaves and it was like first come, first served. So then like the soldiers like
13:41fought over the food. So like, that's where like the fight comes from in Budo Fight.
13:55The dad is very proud of him too, very proud of him. He's telling to everyone, but unfortunately,
14:03you know, he's not going to see him doing that, but he knows.
14:11Are you scared? I'm kind of anxious, but like excited, like excited at the same time.
14:16What happened with your financial aid?
14:18Well, uh, on the website, it says like offered and accepted and all like the financial aid I got
14:21with like the Cal Grant and like the, I got the Pell Grant already.
14:24How much do you have to pay out of pocket?
14:27Um, I believe like maybe 10k. 10k? I think so.
14:34Oh, you still have to pay out of pocket?
14:35Like my family, we're not like the richest out there. So we don't really have like a good method
14:42to pay for it all. But I'm still trying to like, I'm still applying more scholarships, trying to get
14:48more money as much as I can. I still want to go to UC Santa Cruz, but I imagine if we don't have the
14:54money to really pay for it, then maybe I would be attending like community college or something else.
15:02The kids going to the college is a lot of money, you know, estimates like 38,000 plus.
15:08And then I think the scholar is going to get everything is like 24,000. So we still need out
15:16of the pocket for 10,000. Hopefully and we're praying that everything's going to be okay.
15:25Have you decided what your major is?
15:28I want to do something in the medical field, not necessarily like a nurse.
15:31Medical field.
15:32I could not see him as a nurse.
15:34Nah.
15:34I'd be a nurse. I'd be moonwalking down those clean halls.
15:37If you walked into my...
15:38You know what Shayla said she wants to be? She wants to be an illustrator for Disney.
15:41Whoa!
15:43I make nurse money.
15:44You're not having a nurse.
15:46It took me a couple of years, but I make nurse money.
15:48You're not having a nurse.
15:49I am a nurse.
15:50You're not.
15:51What do you do?
15:52I nurse machines back to health when they break.
15:55That's what I do.
15:56Mom.
15:56I'm a fixer.
15:57Yeah.
15:57One of y'all going to be a nurse.
16:00One of y'all going to be a nurse.
16:01No, I'm not.
16:14Mr. Cam.
16:16What's going on with you?
16:17I've been doing good, you know.
16:21It's been some up and downs, but overall I feel like everything's been working out.
16:25Are you doing the graduation path for like the adjusted graduation?
16:29Yeah.
16:30So yeah, me and Ms. Woodall talked along with like my school therapist and like we came up with a school plan so that I could graduate.
16:39How's that been going?
16:41It's been going good.
16:42Like I've been feeling like less pressure than I felt like all year.
16:45So that's good though.
16:47Because I know the pressure has been a lot for you and I know that's kind of like, you know,
16:51been part of the biggest issue.
16:52So I'm really glad that you don't feel as much anymore.
16:56You were, I think you were the first person that like I really told like you were the one
17:00that like helped me kind of like get help.
17:02We've been through it together.
17:04Like I feel like if I wouldn't have talked to you, I don't know where like I would have been right now.
17:08And if you were the one that I didn't want to disappoint because like I joined your program
17:13to like get into these schools that I told you were my dream schools.
17:16And like obviously that changed.
17:18Everything happens for a reason.
17:19And at the end of the day, I'm still going to do what we had set our goal was to just graduate.
17:26I'm happy to have helped in whatever way I did.
17:29But please remember this is like, this is you at the end of the day.
17:32Like you are strong enough to get through what you've gotten through.
17:34You know what I'm saying?
17:35Like you persevered through that.
17:37At one point, like I didn't even feel like I was going to graduate.
17:40Let alone like even have an in-person graduation too.
17:43So I haven't seen my class in like over a year.
17:47Honestly, you saying that just gave me the chills.
17:49Like you've had a lot.
17:51You've had a high school career for sure.
17:54I'm super excited.
17:54I mean, I'll be at graduation.
17:56So I'll try and make sure we find each other.
17:58Congratulations again.
17:59Thank you, Mr. Cam.
18:01You're welcome.
18:02All right.
18:03I will talk to you hopefully then.
18:04Okay, bye.
18:05All right, bye.
18:06Bye.
18:20I'm going to pick up my cap and gown May 17th, I think.
18:24I don't know what I would want to put like on my cap.
18:27Maybe some butterflies.
18:28Do you prefer a steak or a little?
18:33No.
18:34Hey.
18:35I don't look like I need these.
18:37Like, you seem like I know.
18:40Becoming this person that I am now, I feel like I came out of my shell.
18:44I'm this different person than I was like a couple years ago.
18:49It says, a butterfly is proof that beauty can emerge from something completely falling apart.
18:53I like that one.
18:54That's why with my cap, I just wanted to show that, like, it may have been a struggle to get here,
19:00but at the end of the day, just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, she became a butterfly.
19:07Okay, the bread is ready.
19:08It's ready.
19:09I need more.
19:11Snack.
19:11Here, I'll take one.
19:12I know.
19:13I know I'll be like later.
19:23So, tell me what's going on with this decision for Santa Cruz?
19:30I saw that, like, I didn't get, like, as much as I thought I would, especially when I log into, like, FAFSA,
19:36and I check, like, how much I'm supposed to get.
19:39It says, like, oh, we don't have, like, any records of you or something like that.
19:43Okay, why don't you pull that up so we can take a look?
19:46Yeah, I can turn on my camera and show you.
19:48All right.
19:49Okay.
19:49Oh, wait.
19:51So, they're just saying, like, it says estimated financial aid budget, which is $38,037.
19:57Then it says expected family contribution is $565.
20:01So, I just got, I just found, I don't know.
20:06Oh, no, no, that, that's a good thing.
20:08So, everything that's in that offered category is what you're being offered.
20:13Wait, is that real?
20:17Yeah, a lot more money than you thought.
20:20Yeah, yeah, for sure.
20:21What the heck?
20:22So, it's almost full, right?
20:26What the heck?
20:28Yeah, I got it.
20:29I didn't know.
20:29Hold on, wait.
20:36Ma, hey, come outside real quick.
20:37Huh?
20:38No, I just need to show you something on the computer.
20:44Can you see my look?
20:45Look, this is the financial aid summary.
20:49It says, if you submit a FAFSA, the following is a calculation of your estimated financial need.
20:52So, financial aid budget is $38,037.
20:56Expected family contribution is $565.
21:00That's how much we have to pay.
21:02$500.
21:03$500.
21:04Not $5,000?
21:04No.
21:05Yes.
21:06You want to look at it again?
21:08I think it's like $5,000.
21:10$565.
21:10Oh.
21:11I didn't know that this is all we had to pay.
21:15I thought we had to pay, like, a lot more.
21:17Yeah, give me $5.
21:18I thought that was bad.
21:22Reach out, reach out, reach out.
21:23There you go.
21:24That's good.
21:26Thanks, Dad.
21:30They're really guiding us.
21:35So, for sure.
21:36For sure?
21:37You're going to be there.
21:38Yeah.
21:41Okay, you react.
21:45We did it.
21:46We did it.
21:47First one that you see.
21:48Yeah, I know.
21:56Seniors, do you know your post-high school plans?
22:00If not, then I encourage you to join the Deer Valley High School Decision Day 2021 event
22:05on May 3rd.
22:07This is a virtual event in celebration for seniors who are making their post-high school decisions.
22:13Traditionally held on May 1st, Decision Day is the deadline when incoming freshmen
22:18have to decide which college to attend in the fall.
22:20Hey, everyone.
22:25Welcome to College Signing Day.
22:27I am thrilled to join you by video today to celebrate the commitment you all have made
22:32to continue your education past high school.
22:34I'm way too hyped.
22:36I'm way too nice.
22:37If you came to battle, then it ain't your night.
22:40Girlies in the party, dip in that body.
22:42Can I come kick it like Mr.
22:44Hello, everyone.
22:45Welcome, welcome.
22:47Welcome, Principal Buki.
22:49We got some admin in the building as well.
22:52I'm happy y'all are here.
22:54This is our College Decision Day.
22:58So what's the celebration, y'all?
23:00All right, so the first part of our agenda is our baby game.
23:05And there is our list of seniors we will be guessing from.
23:09Very first, who is this?
23:16Yes, 17 people got it correct.
23:19That is Abby.
23:23Okay, so next year I will be attending San Jose State.
23:28Yay, congratulations.
23:31One piece of advice, I would definitely recommend for people to apply early decision.
23:36It might be a little bit more pressure, but you know, your chances of getting in will be a lot
23:41better than if you apply regular decision.
23:43Great piece of advice.
23:44Thank you, Abby.
23:45Thank you, thank you.
23:46Next caption is, who is fitted in the USPA?
23:50Yes, y'all got it right that time.
23:54Sellers, Javonte, tell us what you're doing next year.
23:58I will be going to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.
24:02Wow, that's changed from the last time we talked.
24:08All right, all right.
24:11Congratulations, Javonte.
24:12Super happy for you.
24:14I heard back from every school except them.
24:16So I heard back from all my state schools, and I heard back from the other HBCUs that I applied
24:20to, and I haven't heard back from them.
24:22So I called, and then the lady was like, we emailed you on February and in April.
24:26And I was like, I didn't get any of those.
24:28And they should be sent the email.
24:29And then it said, um, I got in.
24:31A piece of advice for us, for us and the underclassmen.
24:35I would say, try your hardest not to get stressed out, because I feel like everyone
24:39around you is going to tell you what they think is best for you.
24:41But at the end of the day, you have to make a decision for yourself.
24:43Absolutely.
24:44I 100% agree with that.
24:46Thank you, Javonte.
24:47And congratulations as well.
24:50The caption is, I mean, look at that smile.
24:56Look at that smile.
24:58Adorable.
25:00Who is that?
25:01Who is that?
25:02Yes, Cadence.
25:06So as far as it's going on next year, still deciding.
25:09Okay.
25:10Advice for the underclassmen.
25:13When you get to this point where you want to decide what school you want to go to and all of that,
25:18at the end of the day, it's your decision and it's your life that you're living.
25:21So whatever makes you happy, go for it.
25:24Absolutely.
25:26Thanks, Cadence, and that beautiful smile.
25:30But we're going to go to Raven next.
25:33What's going on next year for you?
25:35I'm going to be attending UC Santa Cruz and currently I'm undeclared.
25:41Okay.
25:42All right.
25:43Congratulations, Raven.
25:45Congratulations on UC Santa Cruz.
25:46Big shout out to you.
25:49And I actually do have an announcement as well.
25:51I guess this is maybe a good time to announce it too.
25:53But next year, I'll actually be going off to UC Riverside
25:58and participating in a doctoral program there.
26:01And I appreciate all of y'all for making this a great two years for me.
26:06Okay.
26:06Woo!
26:08All right.
26:09That was our show for today.
26:11Congratulations to everyone for just getting through this year.
26:14It's been a crazy year.
26:15And I'm very happy and excited to see where my underclassmen go next.
26:19Um, I'll still be here for the rest of the month.
26:23So like, you know, still reach out.
26:25You know what I'm saying?
26:26I'm still here.
26:27So still ask me questions and all that good stuff.
26:30Are you at graduation at least?
26:31Oh, yeah.
26:32I'll be at graduation for sure.
26:34Okay.
26:34Well, that's when I can cry and say goodbye.
26:36Yes.
26:37We can cry at graduation.
26:40You almost caught me today.
26:41Um, but yes.
26:46So unless anybody has anything else to say, congratulations.
26:50But I'll see y'all soon.
26:51Day everyone.
26:52Congratulations.
26:53It's good though.
27:01Oh, did she step into this?
27:03I did it?
27:03She definitely did.
27:04No, I didn't.
27:05Can you have a watermelon?
27:07How much is yours?
27:08Dude, hers is good.
27:09Hers is like $12,000 for four years.
27:12Yeah, because I felt like it had like a projection thing.
27:14And it said that it covers like $16,000.
27:16I have to just pay $12,000.
27:18How much are you going to have to pay for yours?
27:20Like $50,000.
27:21$50,000.
27:22You're going where?
27:23Morehouse in Atlanta.
27:24What's that?
27:25Atlanta, Georgia.
27:26To HBCU.
27:29I thought you were going to Cal State East Bay.
27:30Mm-mm.
27:31Shame on mom.
27:32Really?
27:33Yeah.
27:34If you would have asked me a couple of weeks ago,
27:35I'd have been like, I'm stressed out.
27:36But now I'm actually really excited.
27:38I feel like I wouldn't be able to live my life happy
27:41and be true to myself if I would have stayed here.
27:43Is your family helping you pay?
27:45No.
27:46They ain't got no money.
27:47No?
27:48No, to be rude.
27:50Not to be rude.
27:50Yeah, I have no money.
27:51No.
27:52But it's fine.
27:53All the college acceptance stuff is really good.
27:56Mahela's going to Clark.
27:58Clark is like basically boys and girls,
28:00and then Morehouse is boys and just Bowman's girls.
28:03You're going to an all-boys school?
28:04Yeah.
28:04Oh.
28:06Really?
28:06Huh.
28:07I love that for you.
28:09That's what I said.
28:10Did you tell them about your dream that you had?
28:13I was thinking of, I was imagining me at the airport and like my family and friends like hugging me
28:18because I was going to college and like a vivid picture of me just like walking away with like
28:22a backpack and a suitcase.
28:23And I was like walking away, but it was like everyone was looking at me,
28:26but I'm just walking by myself.
28:27And I got on the airplane and I like, and I just started crying.
28:31He started crying in the kitchen while he was cleaning.
28:33Because I was sad.
28:34I'm like sad.
28:35I got to go by myself.
28:36That was the thing.
28:36So what's going on?
28:46It's been a minute.
28:46How you doing?
28:47I'm doing good.
28:47How do you feel about the whole school situation and just how the year went?
28:50Uh, that's a great question.
28:55I mean, like the way school ended and like how it went from like when we stopped school to now,
29:00it's just like, it's unfortunate.
29:03I wanted so much time with Ahmad.
29:05I did.
29:06And I think, I think he wanted time with me too.
29:11And this is again, the challenges of not being able to see each other every day.
29:17So what are you going to do next?
29:18I mean, what's the plan?
29:20I'm either going to Chabot or I'm going to Merritt for a junior college.
29:24That's what's up.
29:25That's what's up.
29:26I like to see that.
29:27It was tough to hear that he may not be able to go to a university next year.
29:32And I think that gets a lot of people down and I hope it doesn't get him down.
29:37Just remember that at the end of the day, you got a lot more life to live
29:39and you got a lot more opportunity.
29:40So keep grinding in every area of your life.
29:44Because I know you're a great person.
29:45I know your mom got high expectations for you because I didn't have conversations with her.
29:49And you know, I have high expectations.
29:50She has high expectations.
29:52Exactly.
29:53Do you have those expectations for yourself?
29:55Yeah, I do.
29:56Yeah, you should.
29:57Everything that we go through, every lesson, every battle, every challenge,
30:01we go through it.
30:03And 20 years from now, you're going to tell it to your kids.
30:06And you're going to tell them how you overcame something.
30:09And that's going to be a part of your life.
30:10That's going to be a part of your autobiography one day.
30:12What you looking forward to?
30:13I'm ready to graduate.
30:15I just feel like it's a big accomplishment.
30:18Like, congratulations, man.
30:20You know, it's a chapter closing and it's a chapter opening.
30:23And it's in so many more ways than one.
30:37I have to do something as spirit commissioner, you know, girl with a bang.
30:49We have senior send off.
30:51I have a senior spirit week that I'm putting together.
30:54I feel like if we were in school, there'd be more, but it's okay.
30:56We'll take what we can get.
30:57Yeah, living life to the fullest.
30:59I'm a gluttonous, the purest form in the flesh of the coolest.
31:02One, two, one, two.
31:04This the twist.
31:05Without me, the party just don't exist.
31:07No MC, put it down like this.
31:09Never out of the...
31:11Hello.
31:12Hello.
31:13What's your last name, honey?
31:14Sellers.
31:15Sellers?
31:15Are you excited?
31:16Yes.
31:16You got your sign and everything yet?
31:17No.
31:18Yeah, the Garth sign?
31:19Yeah, yeah.
31:20I already got that.
31:20Okay, I'll go grab your...
31:23All right, congratulations.
31:24We'll see you in a couple weeks.
31:25Okay, thank you.
31:26Bye.
31:28Oh, this is so beautiful.
31:29That's so beautiful.
31:33She's following you?
31:34No, she's not following me.
31:35We're going to different schools.
31:36Oh, really?
31:37Well, originally, that was the plan, but no.
31:41I don't like Katie's that way.
31:42To go down to Howard?
31:43We didn't get in.
31:44We didn't get in.
31:45If we would have got in, we would have for sure
31:47we've been up there.
31:48No if and but.
31:50Well, it's a celebration.
31:52Congratulations.
31:57Hello.
31:57Hello, Jay.
31:59Hello.
32:00How are you doing?
32:00I'm good.
32:01How are you?
32:01I'm good.
32:02And you're the cabin gown?
32:02Yeah.
32:03Okay, I'll be right back, okay?
32:06All right, congratulations.
32:08All right, have a great day, guys.
32:09Me too.
32:20My mom, she likes arts and crafts, so she wanted to decorate the car
32:23with like blue and yellow for you to Santa Cruz.
32:27Congrats.
32:27Congrats.
32:28Congrats.
32:47Cadence.
32:49Hey, Mr. Kim.
32:52Cadence, you're my last ever one-on-one official.
32:58Oh, we got to end it with the best, the favorite, all of that.
33:03So I haven't heard anything back from Stoneman, Natalie.
33:08What's the deadline?
33:09Because I know you said accept financial aid package.
33:12Because I don't think we accepted the financial aid package.
33:15I would do it now because it's not going to hurt you.
33:17Because you also have to realize, Cadence, like, when this is over,
33:21even if you went to LMC, you got to transfer in two years.
33:24Then you got to go through the whole process again.
33:27Yeah.
33:28And if you're doing that, and if you want to go to LMC in order to
33:35go to a school that you really want to go to, that's one thing.
33:39If you're going to go to LMC because you're
33:44afraid of going to a university just in general,
33:48Wow.
33:48That's very different and that's not a reason to go.
33:55I don't know.
33:56I know you don't.
33:59Because she didn't get into Spelman, she didn't get into Howard,
34:01she has consistently been hesitant and indecisive.
34:07I think out of, what if I don't like it?
34:09What if I'm not good enough?
34:10What if I don't make it?
34:11And it's constantly been me just, you know, validating her that she's
34:17made it this far and that she can do it.
34:19That last meeting, Mr. Kim.
34:23How's that feel?
34:25I would say I'm sad, but I'm not because I'll see you at graduation.
34:30Okay, good save, good save.
34:33Yeah.
34:34Yeah.
34:34Okay, Mr. Kim.
34:36See you next summer.
34:37Hi, Cadence.
34:37Thanks for being my last.
34:38Thank you for being my last student.
34:40I appreciate you.
34:41What a wonderful way to end this job.
34:44That was definitely one.
35:14It says, this one's for you, mom, with the best seat in the house.
35:44Nobody expected us to be able to have in-person graduation, and it was probably the first
35:57time most of us had had that many people around us, and that many students around us.
36:03And for that one time, or the first time to be the graduation, I think just summed up
36:08all the emotions and just brought all the feelings from all throughout the year into this one
36:13space for a lot of people.
36:16I didn't expect it, but yeah, it was great.
36:23Good morning, parents, staff, and the graduating class of 2021.
36:28Today, I stand before you as a proud principal of Deer Valley High School to celebrate the
36:35end of a journey and the beginning of another one with you.
36:40Please remember where you came from.
36:44Don't forget those who poured into you and those who got you here.
36:49Go out, shun, and make us proud.
36:54Best wishes in your future, and congratulations again to the class of 2021!
37:01We will now have the presentation of diplomas.
37:08Ebaidaeke Osewe Oyemolon.
37:27Cadence Amaya Betancourt.
37:29Come on, Cadence!
37:30Radina Sharran.
37:33Emily Wezaar.
37:35Congratulations, Richard Gamble.
37:37Tyrae Clay Tuggett.
37:38Rachel Reynolds.
37:39Javonte Liandre Sellers.
37:45Jaithne Leandre Sellers.
37:48Yay!
37:52Nebrew, Jason G usuda.
37:55Amad Woodard.
37:57Will the class of 2021 please rise?
38:20Congratulations, graduates.
38:27Class of 2021, please turn your tassel.
38:50They have made it through, I think we graduated almost all of our 420 graduates and I am so
38:58proud of them.
38:59I am so proud for what they've achieved this year.
39:03If the kids going through this year and a half made it through fine, they can make it
39:08through anything.
39:28Oh my God, that's the key!
39:41You did it!
39:43You did it!
39:44Congrats, girl!
39:45Thank you!
39:46Abby, I think, is going to be a world-class person.
39:49Yeah, yeah!
39:51I've loved our conversations.
39:53She's disciplined.
39:54She's focused.
39:55As you can see with the rest of her life when it comes to sports, when it comes to involvement
40:00with everything.
40:01So I have no doubt she's going to be, she's going to be great.
40:03You're going to recognize her name when you see it.
40:06I want to get a picture with you and Cadence.
40:08I do.
40:09Cadence is like over there somewhere.
40:11I'll come find you guys.
40:13Emily, you almost made me cry.
40:14Oh my God, I started crying.
40:15Mrs. Woodall, you almost made me cry.
40:16Oh my God, no, I wanted to cry.
40:17You made it.
40:18Emily, for her, I know that she's going to succeed wherever she chooses to go and whatever
40:33she chooses to do after this.
40:35The fact that she's here is everything.
40:38Congratulations.
40:39You have my number, so anytime, send me up, all right?
40:43Good luck in your schooling, too.
40:47You got it.
40:48Congrats.
40:49I'm proud of you.
40:51You made it.
40:52Oh my God, you made me cry, girl.
40:57I know you're not crying.
40:58I just know you're not crying.
40:59I just know you're not crying.
41:00I just know you're not crying.
41:02Cadence, she's more than capable.
41:07That's something that she has to still see.
41:10But once she unlocks it, she's going to do amazing things.
41:14What's up, Javonte?
41:15Oh, man.
41:16Are you crying?
41:17No.
41:18Why is he crying?
41:19I don't know.
41:20Javonte is a very independent person.
41:23I think that's going to take him a long way.
41:25I think he'll thrive at Morehouse.
41:26Okay, check it out, check it out, check it out.
41:28Don't try.
41:29Get it together.
41:30You made it, girl.
41:31Of course I was going to make you, Mr. Pia.
41:33I knew he was going to make you, but dang.
41:34Don't doubt me.
41:35Don't doubt me.
41:36It was a long road.
41:37Ooh, it was a long road for sure.
41:39Oh, man.
41:44Congrats, big man.
41:45How you feel?
41:46I really want him to follow that dream that he wants
41:49and understand even if the dream and the best thing
41:52that could happen doesn't happen to still get something
41:55out of it.
41:59He cried!
42:03Don't be crying again, Mr. Pia.
42:04I'm crying.
42:05You was crying?
42:06I was crying.
42:07I was crying.
42:08I was crying.
42:09He's right there.
42:10He's right there.
42:12AJ!
42:13I love you.
42:16You did it, AJ.
42:19How does it feel?
42:20What is it?
42:21Exciting.
42:22Yay!
42:23Got the gold there, too.
42:24Yay!
42:26You know, everything that he's been through this year
42:28with his family, I think Raven showed me just how much
42:32our students go through and how strong they are.
42:37They impact us every day.
42:38I think Raven impacted me more than he probably knows.
42:46I'm Raven's brother.
42:47Oh.
42:48He and my mom, we want to thank you for helping him out.
42:50No worries.
42:51No worries.
42:52He had a rough year and he said he really likes you.
42:53He was like, look at me.
42:54Our counselor's helping us out.
42:55And I just want to thank you, bro.
42:56He's amazing.
42:57So I wouldn't do it unless he was amazed or something.
43:00Amazing, bro.
43:01Yeah, no.
43:02I saw the microphone.
43:03I was like, I think that's the kind of thing we should go thank of.
43:05No, no worries, man.
43:06Congratulations to y'all.
43:07This is y'all too, right?
43:08Yeah, yeah, yeah.
43:09It's a village.
43:10It takes a village.
43:11Now we're off to college, bro.
43:12I know.
43:13I'm excited for him.
43:14Yeah.
43:15Congratulations again, man.
43:16Big things.
43:17Thanks again, bro.
43:18Yeah, of course.
43:19Thank you so much.
43:20You're welcome.
43:21Congratulations, bro.
43:22I'm kind of excited to have something out loud.
43:23Have a great day.
43:24Have a great day, man.
43:25Have a great day, man.
43:26Bye.
43:27Bye.
43:28Bye.
43:29Bye.
43:30Bye.
43:52If I'm being honest, that's not going to hit me that I graduated yet.
44:00Graduated with honors.
44:01With honors.
44:02With honors.
44:03Okay?
44:04So.
44:05It's Cadence and her mom, and they were able to crop her mom in here.
44:11And they look just so much alike.
44:14I just think that's so beautiful.
44:16Even though she can't be here, she's here in spirit, which is so awesome.
44:21So what that is?
44:23I'm on the side of it?
44:24Yeah.
44:25I got to fill out a car.
44:27Yeah, why would you not?
44:28Like a real synthesis?
44:30Oh my God.
44:33I'm gonna miss us, I know.
44:36Y'all were the ones crying.
44:38I know, right?
44:39Y'all was crying.
44:40Y'all were crying.
44:42I don't want to say I'm practically first gen, because my mom went to college and everything,
44:45but no one around me really was able to help me with that as far as applying and doing all
44:50that stuff.
44:51They didn't know too much about it.
44:52Because they never won.
44:53Like if my mom was here, I would have been good.
44:55I would have been able to talk to her about this stuff.
44:57So, thanks to Mr. Kim.
44:59He definitely played a big role, a big help in all of this.
45:04So, thanks to him.
45:05She's back to announce.
45:06Oh.
45:07What is she going to announce?
45:08What school she's going to?
45:09Oh.
45:10Drum roll, please.

45:15Yeah.
45:16I know.
45:17I know.
45:18I know.
45:19I know.
45:20I know.
45:33We're at California State University at Los Angeles, so I'm in college now.
46:02In the beginning, you know, first couple of weeks, I was just thinking like, wow.
46:06Is this real?
46:11Before I left home, we cleaned out the garage.
46:15I found like a whole bunch of old stuff from my mom.
46:19She was in a sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho.
46:22It's part of the Divine Nine, and I found like her old mugs that she made as well as
46:27like the little paddle thing with the markings of the sorority on it and stuff like that.
46:33And then I also seen a whole bunch of old pictures from when she was in college.
46:40I found out that she used to do sketches as far as like designs.
46:44I didn't know that.
46:49I know she'd be proud of how far I've made it.
46:53I know that.
46:54And I'm proud of myself too.
46:56The first thing I noticed is all the black people.
47:14When I first came in, I was like, it's a lot.
47:17Hey, young man, congratulations.
47:20I appreciate it.
47:21I'm Lamar, by the way, maintenance supervisor.
47:22Nice to meet you.
47:23Looking forward to seeing you.
47:25Welcome.
47:26It would be happy just to be around more of like my culture and living out here.
47:29It's like a real brotherhood.
47:31I mean, everyone is just supporting everyone and helping everyone to get ahead.
47:35So I love it.
47:36I love it.
47:37You're here.
47:38Welcome to Morehouse.
47:39At first, I was like unsure and then sad and then excited.
47:42I'm going to see if I can get up here.
47:44But right now, I'm just, I'm ready for the journey that's ahead of me.
47:48One more.
47:49There you go.
47:50All right.
47:59Excuse me.
48:00Where's the A building?
48:01Cross.

48:13Uh, no.
48:14I'm Raven.
48:15Who has the weight?
48:16AJ, take your pillow and ruffle out.
48:19Let's do it.
48:20There's no space.
48:21I'll take the frame off.
48:22I'll take off.
48:23Seeing my whole family coming up here with me to help me move in.
48:27It's scary, but it's exciting.
48:33Okay, go.
48:34Mama, come here.
48:35Mom.
48:36Mom.
48:37Go with you.
48:38Mom.
48:39Oh, baby.
48:40Do it long way, Robert.
48:43All right.
48:44Okay, now let's all cry.
48:45Awww.
48:46One, two, three.
48:47If I'm Sage.
48:48He gives you up.
48:50What if I say, what happened?
48:51You go to Sage's Nino?
48:53Oh, wait, what?
48:54Come on.
48:55Come on.
48:56One of Sage's Godfathers.
48:57Awww.
48:58Yay.
49:04Yay.
49:05You have a Nino.
49:06Sage is my newly born niece.
49:08I'm her godfather.
49:09So that's really exciting.
49:11Come here.
49:12Come here.
49:13Come here.
49:14Come here.
49:15You don't got a choice.
49:16You're going to miss me, huh?
49:18I'm going to miss my nieces and nephews.
49:21Give me my belt back.
49:22Hey, hug you.
49:23Right here?
49:24Yeah.
49:25Okay, I give my belt back before I leave, though.
49:27Be responsible like I told you.
49:28Make your dad proud.
49:30He's here with you.
49:31Mm-hmm.
49:32He's watching.
49:33If you have any trouble, just ask dad.
49:36Yeah, what I'm saying?
49:38Yeah, just pray to dad.
49:39He's watching over you, man.
49:41Yeah.
49:42He's here.
49:44Dad's here.
49:45He would definitely be really proud
49:48because he had, like, high expectations for me.
49:51Like, he knew that, like, I was going to go somewhere.
49:56Like, my brother's always been saying, like,
49:58do it for dad and do it for mom,
50:00and they built me up as a person,
50:02taught me so many things,
50:04and, like, I couldn't do it without them, you know?
50:07And especially now with passing to my dad,
50:10I get to really realize what he's really done for me.
50:15See you later, okay?
50:17Call me if you need anything.
50:18I'll be all right.
50:19Anything under $100.
50:21That's right.
50:23That's right.
50:32A lot more opportunities for me,
50:33but at the same time, it's really nerve-wracking.
50:36I'm here now, so, like, I did it.
50:47I did it.
50:48My dad nieces.
51:07Oh, my God.
51:09It seems like you're doing pretty good as far as just, you know, being in this new space.
51:38I'm really happy to see it.
51:40Anything for me?
51:42Study hard.
51:43All that good stuff.
51:45Do something.
51:46Stay active.
51:47You know, I used to play basketball a long, a very, very long time ago in high school.
51:52Very long time ago.
51:53Wow.
51:54All Mr. Camp's, like, EOP students, you know, they went off to school and college the same time Mr. Camp was going off to me.
51:58I know.
51:59Grad school.
52:01That is, that's something that's crazy.
52:04I don't know.
52:05It's crazy.
52:06Because, like, now it's over.
52:08It's over.
52:09It's over.
52:11Don't start crying.
52:12I'm not going to cry.
52:14I hope not.
52:15We've talked about this.
52:16Don't start crying.
52:16I feel like if I'm not the one who's going to push myself, then who can really push me?
52:34I want to keep advocating for causes, keep being a good person, like, just living life.
52:41I'm going to do it exactly the way he told me.
52:55Keep working and then just follow the steps that he left.
52:59I just, I just got to do what I got to do and not slack.
53:02It's all dependent on me.
53:05keep being a good person, like, loving life.
53:17Every day is a different battle.
53:20It's a different battle.
53:22Now I have a different outlook on life.
53:25We already went through this.
53:26I know we can go through so much more.
53:40I'm hoping to know myself more as a person,
53:43get into more of what I like, making new friends.
53:46This is a new journey.
53:48I'm really looking forward to it.
53:50I'm going to be something great.
53:52For that to happen, I need to go out and live my life.
54:05I'm going to be something great.
54:07For that to happen, I need to go out and live my life.
54:13I always felt like I was a really independent person to begin with.
54:20I know that I'm going to be OK and I can just take care of myself.
54:28I have to be certain compared to myself and everything.
54:31The moment is really awesome to see myself and hope.
