While school continues with online learning, students organize a protest against the decision to put police officers on campus. Ebei and Kadynce hold out hope that sports will come back, and Ahmad continues playing AAU basketball to get the attention of recruiters. As mid-semester nears more than 50% of students have at least one F, leaving Mr. Cam to wonder how the system is failing the students.

00:00I think it was March 13th, that Friday, just sent it out and it was like, no school, we're not going back.
00:07More than 1,500 K-12 schools across the country that have or plan to shut down.
00:13We were like, okay, if we leave, we're going to come back to school in two weeks, no problem.
00:17But we just never went back.
00:19We all were not prepared to go into distance learning. We were not at all.
00:25It's like your senior year is your most memorable and it's going to be through a computer.
00:29So, you know, we're going to try and write some fire essays.
00:32The school board just basically said we're going to stay in distance learning.
00:36But at the same time, they decided to put police in our schools.
00:41If the people who are in leadership don't understand what the students are going through, it's not going to matter.
00:47Say no to SRO!
00:49Say no to SRO!
00:54Say no to SRO!
00:56Counselor!
00:57No car!
00:58Counselor!
00:59No car!
00:59Counselor!
01:00No car!
01:01Finally, no car!
01:02No car!
01:03The school district is voting right now to approve six police officers in schools.
01:11We're here because we want them to vote no.
01:13That's a council member right there.
01:15We need counselors.
01:16What CAM's doing in the schools, college and career advisors.
01:21They continue to cut program after program, and now they want the money to go to the police.
01:29We're going to try to make sure that we all can get inside and let everyone in, so we're going to try.
01:34The issue of policing in the schools, in the city itself, has become the central issue as it has in America, right?
01:42And I hate to say this because I hate saying Antioch represents America, because that is the cheesiest way you can begin any story, but it really is true.
01:53Massive crowds swarming cities across the country are choosing social justice over social distancing.
01:59We can be killed by COVID-19 just as easily as we can be killed by a cop.
02:04Turn on the news, see the script from Contagion, I feel like Matt Dillon, I'm immune, but quit playing, quit playing.
02:10Serious mask on mask off, chilling on the couch, I see the knee on the neck.
02:15God put us on time out so we could check out another brother killed by a dirty cop vet.
02:20Say his name George Floyd, don't you forget George Floyd!
02:23Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 called up an issue that, you know, we've been talking about for years around police violence.
02:31All of these cities were saying, we're going to get rid of police in schools.
02:34At the same time, Antioch was going the other way.
02:37Talk about it!
02:38It don't sound right.
02:39All the research, you know what it says?
02:41SROs don't work.
02:42They say it criminalizes our students.
02:44It's very tough because the school board had just cut $1.8 million in funding,
02:52and somehow, someway, they were going to find $375,000 to put into school resource officers.
03:05After George Floyd was murdered, our schools, they had said,
03:08we stand with you and stuff like that.
03:10If you stand with us, then how can you put officers on our campus?
03:15I feel uneasy knowing that it's a whole officer on campus with their gun armed, ready to shoot whenever.
03:21Councilors, not cops!
03:23Councilors, not cops!
03:24We will vote you out!
03:26We will vote you out!
03:27We will vote you out!
03:28We will vote you out!
03:29We will vote you out!
03:31We will vote you out!
03:33A lot of students showed up, a lot of alumni showed up, and basically, you know, they said,
03:38They said, either you're going to vote no, or we're not going to let the meeting go.
03:44I mean, it goes to show how they feel towards us.
03:46We're telling you that we don't want officers on our campus.
03:49And yet you still feel like, oh yeah, we can still put officers on the campus.
03:54It doesn't matter.
03:54Like, you know, they'll be okay.
03:56Like, we're not okay.
04:08So keep on working till the whistle blow.
04:13Oh, when the nighttime come.
04:15It's on when the nighttime come.
04:18Wear this mask on my face all day.
04:21Smiling like I'm never doing what you say.
04:24Oh, till the nighttime come.
04:27It's on when the nighttime come.
04:29Wear this mask on my face all day.
04:32Smiling like I never knew what you say.
04:35Oh, till the nighttime come.
04:37Summer, summer, when the nighttime come.
04:40It ain't really over, it has just begun.
04:43We're going to be all right when the nighttime come.
04:46Tired of trying to figure what I might become.
04:49I just want to sing my song when the nighttime come.
05:00So last, I think it was January, there was a big basketball game.
05:07It was against our school rivals.
05:11It was Antioch against Deer Valley High School.
05:15In the end, Deer Valley won.
05:18We beat Antioch High.
05:20Everybody's cheering, happy for their school and everything.
05:23And then it just all went away in a blink of an eye.
05:29A student shot outside of a high school basketball game has died.
05:35The 16-year-old was found outside of Deer Valley High School Friday night.
05:39Police say it all started when a basketball game against Antioch High School wrapped up.
05:44What happened was a group of kids were fighting and then the kid pulled out a gun.
05:48There was a student that got shot and he ended up passing away the next day.
05:53His name was Jonathan Parker.
05:56They called him John John.
05:57He was a sophomore at Deer Valley.
06:03That happened on a Friday night and we came back to school the next Monday.
06:09It was emotional for students, for sure.
06:11Kids that knew him, like, they weren't able to talk.
06:15I saw how a lot of the people that didn't know him were so affected by it.
06:20And, you know, you look around and it's like some kids in your class crying
06:23because they knew the student and everything.
06:25It's just, it was so sad.
06:29What we were witnessing was students who were grieving for the loss of their friend
06:35and what they needed was support.
06:41After that, there was an emergency meeting held by the district
06:46to kind of go over the safety measures.
06:48And they were like, there's a Deer Valley problem.
06:51And additionally, as mentioned previously, the chief of police and I are working on a grant
06:55to add school resource officers as well as police presence ads.
06:59They want to put cops on campus based off of what happened at that game.
07:03The whole shooting, that was not related to the school.
07:07Wasn't even a Deer Valley student who pulled the trigger.
07:10It was a Pittsburgh high student, I believe.
07:12It's just the crime scene is where it took place.
07:15It's not the school's fault.
07:17And just these people trying to blame the students,
07:19trying to, like, make us seem like we're, like, bad kids
07:23when everyone was still grieving.
07:25At Deer Valley High School, there are no mental health counselors.
07:29There are no restorative justice facilitators.
07:34There are no peer mediators.
07:36There was a board meeting that happened and I spoke about the need for mental health.
07:43They didn't need cops on campus.
07:46So I am here to ask, if we are here to discuss safety and the protection of our students,
07:53how are we going to care for their emotional needs?
07:57And how are we going to support what they need going forward?
08:02I encourage you to review the allocation of resources across AUSD schools.
08:10Our students are incredible.
08:13They are scholars.
08:14They are athletes.
08:16They are performers.
08:17And they deserve better.
08:20Okay, just for the public, we have protesters inside the building
08:29and we need to call for police to continue the meeting.
08:35Counselors, not cops!
08:36Counselors, not cops!
08:38We had 88 public comments out of 100 at the city council meeting saying,
08:43we do not want police in our schools.
08:45They do not make us feel safe.
08:47They make us feel uncomfortable.
08:48We feel criminalized.
08:51And in my opinion, this is a complete disregard to all of that.
08:54This is basically saying, we don't care what you have to say.
08:57We're going to do what we're going to do because we think it's best for these kids.
09:02Like our school board is putting their kids in danger.
09:05And nobody cares.
09:06Nobody cares to listen.
09:08They're banging on the door, but we're going to continue our meeting.
09:12We need more counselors.
09:13We need more people who are experts in college admissions.
09:16Those are the things our students need.
09:17This is where we should put our resources and not in SROs.
09:22You know what I'm saying?
09:25Okay, with that, we have a motion on the floor for six officers accepting the grants.
09:31I'm going to call for the vote.
09:32Trustee Sawyer White?
09:34No.
09:35Trustee Ellie Householder?
09:38No.
09:38Trustee Gary Huff?
09:40Yes.
09:41Trustee Mary Rojack?
09:42Yes.
09:43And my vote is yes.
09:45The motion passes three to two.
09:48It didn't end up doing anything.
09:50It's really hard to sit here and come to terms with that.
09:55I think that we're moving in the wrong direction by putting cops on campus.
10:00It's scary to think that instead of providing a more welcoming place to come to, especially
10:07after something like that, now they want to put police officers there, which does not make
10:11it seem like somewhere you're welcome.
10:13It's not making me feel safer.
10:17A lot of the students were the organizers of the protests, and that just goes to show
10:23the potential that these students have.
10:24And it's one of the reasons why we need to invest in them.
10:27I want to learn more about the racial barriers, the structural barriers.
10:30But more importantly, like, how do we get over the hump?
10:35What about this structure is going to change so that we don't see these disparities anymore,
10:40right?
10:41And so I feel like I have to go get my education, and, you know, I need to learn more about that.
10:45I am applying to graduate school.
10:47I'm applying to master's and PhD programs because I want to gain as much knowledge as
10:51possible about these things.
10:54I'm really excited because I made this breakthrough on what I want to study in grad school.
10:58Like, I really thought about why I push students to college so much.
11:03And one of the reasons that I came to is this concept, critical consciousness.
11:08Critical consciousness is basically just understanding the world, the different systems, the oppressive
11:12forces that are on you as a person, and then taking action and do something against them.
11:17When I was in college, that's where I learned about all of these systems that were at play.
11:21And that's one of the reasons why I pushed students to college.
11:28I see Javonte.
11:33I see Cadence.
11:34I see Ebi.
11:35Let's get into it, y'all.
11:36Here's some things that I want to make sure everybody does.
11:40I've had a one-on-one with Emily.
11:42We had a really great conversation.
11:44She's maybe showed up to one meeting.
11:45I'm really hoping that she shows up today.
11:48If not, I'm probably going to have to reach out.
11:50So those are very important.
11:51It's something that you should not procrastinate on.
11:53And if you need help with those, please let me know, okay?
12:03We were slow for the first couple of weeks when we were first going into quarantine, but
12:08we've been open every day.
12:10It's good to see people that I know at work from school.
12:15But I was still missing a lot of classes from work.
12:18And it's just, like, so hard trying to get through these uncertain times, like, one thing after another.
12:24Especially if my seniors continue to check your emails, a lot of times they will send you an email and they will tell you to create a college portal, okay?
12:34That college portal is where you will figure out whether or not you've got accepted or not, so it is actually really important.
12:41I've been working a lot, so it was just, it was really hard to adjust.
12:47I want everyone to sign up for a one-on-one.
12:50I'm going to put that link in the chat for my seniors.
12:56Other than that, if y'all have questions, hit me up.
12:58I'm here for y'all always.
12:59Thank y'all for coming.
13:00Bye, Mr. Cam.
13:01Bye, y'all.
13:02Have a good week.
13:04Last year when I would have meetings, I would just call them out of class.
13:10And then we would meet during maybe a lunch period or a class time.
13:14But now they have to, you know, be on top of their business and really be intentional about coming to the meetings.
13:34What's up, brother?
13:35I like to work out and exercise because I like that thrill in your body you get.
13:54Like people that's active know what I'm talking about.
13:56The adrenaline.
13:57I've been like that since I was like a baby.
13:59Like I always had energy.
14:00So I need to play sports to control that or else I'm going to go crazy or something.
14:04I don't know.
14:06It's like we had that backup plan always with juco.
14:08But it's like that's not what you really want.
14:10That's not what you want to do.
14:11It's like you work your butt off.
14:12Unless you have to.
14:13I mean juco not bad, to be honest, but it's just not what you want to go.
14:15If you can go to a university, then go to the university.
14:19You don't want to go to a juco.
14:20Yeah.
14:21Unless you just don't have the grades and go to juco, get them up and then you can transfer to a university.
14:25Sports are very important to me.
14:29School gets you able to play sports.
14:31So that's just my motivation to keep going in school and everything.
14:35But basketball is my main sport for sure.
14:44I do want to play college basketball.
14:46I want a basketball scholarship because if I'm going to college to play basketball
14:50and I'm getting a free education, that's just like you can't get better than that.
14:54I heard you want to be famous.
14:56You can be on top like your name is on the A-list.
14:58All these haters talking, but you know they're never safe.
15:00Been to do them for the stars overnight, you gon' be famous.
15:03D1 college is like Duke and Kentucky.
15:06Their games have like 20,000 people.
15:09All that energy, I would just love to be in that type of environment.
15:13One second left, you got the ball in your hand, shoot it.
15:17That's what would get me.
15:22You feel more accomplished if you get out of high school with a good scholarship
15:34and you go play somewhere like big, you know what I mean?
15:37So yeah, we really need this season to be honest.
15:40For sure, because we don't have no other chance.
15:42Especially in high school, you don't have another chance.
15:44We really, truly thought we would get an October start.
15:53Rolled into October and ended up getting pushed again.
15:57Nothing on campus, no practice.
15:59All classes are continuing to be held online.
16:02Since March 19th of this year, the state of California effectively suspended all youth sports leagues to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
16:14All school, club and recreational youth sports have been put on hold.
16:18Youth sports is still sidelined.
16:21What's next for the kids?
16:23Many kids needed this year to earn a scholarship.
16:27For the athlete that's really looking to make big strides, the biggest impact is that to get a scholarship, you have to be seen.
16:36You have to be watched.
16:37And if you're not playing, you don't get the same kind of evaluation and they don't get those college opportunities.
16:43And it really sucks, like football season was supposed to be right now.
16:49They're planning for us to go back in January and sports is supposed to start in January.
16:54So I'm really hoping that plan is what we stick to.
16:58I've gotten some recruiting from smaller schools, but like not at the scale that I would want.
17:04Ultimately, the bottom line, it comes down to the district office.
17:11The district office says yes or no as to whether or not we will start sports or not.
17:32So here is their last cheer pitcher and there's Cadence right here.
17:39And Ebby's right there in the middle.
17:41And that's our last pitcher right now.
17:44And this is the wall of cheer.
17:48The main reason why I decided to try out for the team, my mom was a cheerleader.
17:55I really look at it as a sisterhood.
17:57I cheer for football season and basketball season.
18:00Both of those seasons are pushed back.
18:02We didn't have football on the sidelines.
18:16No basketball.
18:17Nothing.
18:18It's an empty feeling.
18:21I waited so long to be on varsity.
18:25Cheer at nighttime games, all that stuff.
18:27And everything shut down.
18:29That weighs heavily on me.
18:31Just, oh my goodness.
18:33I don't even like thinking about it because it's sad.
18:37I miss my team.
18:38Okay?
18:39I miss hearing my coach to tell me and Ebby to stop goofing off and get back to the dance routine.
18:44And so I miss that.
18:46My girls, Ebby and Cadence, they could do anything they wanted.
18:49They put their mind to it.
18:50They're smart.
18:51They're intelligent.
18:52They have the drive.
18:53I don't want them to lose that.
18:55I don't want them to lose that.
19:05I have all different types of fabric.
19:08Spiderman, polka dot, God, happiness, peace.
19:14I started living with my grandma when I was about seven years old because my mom, she
19:19had passed away due to lupus, which is a disease that attacks your immune system.
19:24Oh, who is this little fellow here?
19:27Cat in the head.
19:30And then my grandma, she ended up moving into an independent senior living place.
19:37And because it's for seniors, I can't be there.
19:41So, therefore, I ended up moving in with my uncle and my auntie, who stay around the corner from the school.
19:47So, his name is John Cena, and we've had John Cena for 15 years now.
20:02He keeps my granny company.
20:04I'm not here and everything.
20:06Even when I'm not here, I call her every day just to make sure she's okay, she feels all right, if she needs anything.
20:12My mother went to Davis, but she didn't finish, but she got sick.
20:25But she was still trying to finish.
20:27She had, like, one semester left that she was trying to do over a seven-year period.
20:34Every time she would get started, she would get sick and have to stop.
20:40My mother was always like a gifted child in school.
20:43She was in the gifted programs and everything.
20:45So, with her, it was just almost like Katie.
20:48Like Katie now taking AP courses and stuff.
20:51Her mother did the same thing going to school.
20:53She was in the cheerleading squad and all that other stuff, too.
20:57That's me and my mom.
21:00She had me while she was in college.
21:02Pretty sure she was majoring to be a nurse.
21:05I was, like, seven when she passed.
21:08It happened I was so young, so I just can't remember that much.
21:11But from what I can remember, she was great.
21:15You know, just the small things and being there with her.
21:19My granny told me, like, a lot of stories about her and everything.
21:23But, um, she talks about how everything she does, how she works so hard,
21:28she does it as if that's what my mom would have wanted.
21:32And that would have been the best option, the best thing for me.
21:36So, yeah, pretty much, pretty much, yeah.
21:42I don't have to worry about Katie.
21:44Did you do your homework?
21:45Katie, did you do this?
21:46Okay, I don't have to do that with her.
21:47So I got confidence that she can do it.
21:49Might, you know, need a little bit more push in here and there
21:52when it gets a little rough, but she can do it.
22:10Hey, guys.
22:11Hey.
22:12What's up, big man?
22:17See you up in the bell.
22:18How's the pain?
22:19It's not that bad today.
22:21So I had surgery on my foot about a week ago now.
22:24It was a problem that had been bothering me for a couple years, but nothing too serious.
22:28But I just decided to get it since we're in, you know, shelter in place right now.
22:32Dinner should be ready in, like, 35 minutes, guys.
22:36Okay.
22:37Cam, are you still working?
22:39I wanted to check in on some kids real quick because I haven't heard from them in a minute.
22:43Okay.
22:44Do you need us to be quiet while you're on a call with them?
22:46No, I'm not going to call them.
22:47I'm probably just going to text them.
22:48Okay.
22:49I'm trying to keep track of all of my students, trying to make sure I don't lose any of them.
22:53Sending text messages to, like, check in on them, see where they're at, making sure they don't drop off and just completely leave me in the dark and just be like, you know, I'm not applying anymore.
23:01Just a little cheese?
23:02Yeah.
23:03We do.
23:04We got tortilla chips.
23:05No, we're out of crackers.
23:06Oh, okay.
23:07We're all out of crackers.
23:08I'm the only cracker in the house, guys.
23:09Are you serious?
23:10I guess you're ready.
23:11Yeah.
23:12I guess you're ready.
23:13Yeah.
23:14I guess you're ready.
23:15Yeah.
23:16I guess you're ready.
23:17Yeah.
23:18I guess you're ready.
23:19Yeah.
23:20I guess you're ready.
23:21Yeah.
23:22I guess you're ready.
23:23Yeah.
23:24I guess you're ready.
23:25Yeah.
23:26Thank you for the food that we're about to receive and for the nourishments of our body.
23:37Christ, that we pray.
23:38Amen.
23:39Amen.
23:40What do you think about going to grad school?
23:43Have you narrowed it down?
23:45Yeah.
23:46I mean, I've solidified the list a little bit more.
23:49So like five PhD programs and then like three master's programs.
23:53So.
23:54The PhD programs, you'll finish faster than if you do a master's, right?
23:59PhD, you go straight in and you kind of, a lot of them, you earn your master's on your
24:03way to your PhD.
24:04So.
24:05A doctor.
24:06I mean.
24:07Dr. Cam.
24:08Dr. Cam.
24:09Dr. Cam.
24:10That's how I'm going to go too.
24:11I'm going to go by Dr. Cam.
24:12You don't say.
24:15You don't say.
24:18I'm going to need some help this weekend with that fence.
24:21On his side?
24:22Oh, the gate?
24:23The gate.
24:24Wait this weekend.
24:25I might be here.
24:27Oh, you don't be here.
24:28I mean, I already can't ask Cam, but it won't take a moment.
24:32You know, I feel like this dude always gets out of everything.
24:35Are you serious right now?
24:36Yes.
24:37Every time it's like.
24:38Are you serious?
24:39It'll be the weekend to clean the garage and Cam's like, oh.
24:42He's like, I'm in LA.
24:43Yeah.
24:44I'm going to go see Naomi this weekend.
24:46Yes.
24:47You always do that.
24:48It always happens that way.
24:49I don't feel bad about it.
24:51I was doing this my entire life.
24:55Funny, funny.
24:58You've got today and then two more classes.
25:12To go over the unit overview.
25:15Cadence is amazing.
25:19John Bob.
25:20She also has a really firm sense of justice and fairness.
25:25Senator Betancourt has a beautiful ring to it and I cannot wait to see it happen.
25:31This is not a verb phrase.
25:33Is it our menace?
25:34So I had Cadence in advanced English and now I have her in just college prep English senior year.
25:40It's our menace, right?
25:41This is what's called an adjective phrase.
25:44This year with distance learning, it's been extremely difficult.
25:49So is it our menace or is it going about?
25:51Oh.
25:52It's our menace.
25:53That's what I said, Ms. Wallace.
25:54Yeah.
25:55I said our menace first.
25:56The adjective phrase describes.
25:57You can't really interact with your teachers.
26:00You try to understand as much as you can.
26:02So it'll be difficult for you to really engage and try to understand the subject.
26:07Those are what we're found.
26:10I think they feel extremely isolated.
26:14And what's the subject?
26:17What has been filed?
26:18It's just so easy to just not even engage, not even turn the computer on.
26:23Get into that mindset where nobody notices me, nobody cares.
26:29And it can be really scary when you sort of know they've got things going on.
26:36Mental health stuff.
26:38That's been really scary.
26:41You have to be motivated to do the work.
26:44To get out of bed and open up the laptop and get to class.
26:48You know, you think you could slip in a quick nap before the next class.
26:52Next thing you know, you wake up, you're 20 minutes late.
26:55And then thinking about colleges, college admissions, staying on top of that, SAT.
27:02It's just a whole lot.
27:04It's too much.
27:06You know, I'm trying to deal with that as best as I can.
27:10The verb and the passive subject is first asked, what is the action of the sentence?
27:17This is my nephew Ryder and this is my niece Shayla.
27:26Hi.
27:27This is my brother's house.
27:28So then we're going to go through the side and then we're going to go to my house.
27:31Currently, I live with my mom in the backyard of my brother's house in a trailer.
27:38This is the doorway to my trailer.
27:41It's huge, like the length of the house.
27:46My mom chose that trailer because she wanted to feel like this is a home, like an actual house.
27:50Before, I was living with my auntie and that was for like a couple years.
27:54And then before that, it was with my cousin.
27:57Then over here, if we have family over or friends, we're going to play pool, shoot some darts.
28:01We also have a tetherball over here.
28:03Family is definitely really important.
28:07We make sure that we take care of each other.
28:10My rooms, the top one over there, you can see my curtains are slightly out.
28:15And then below that, right below that is my mom's room.
28:19The kids like to play around here and I like to work out.
28:22I have my own little space where I would use my punching bag, use my weights.
28:26These kids over here, they would like to play around.
28:28They have a basketball hoop.
28:29Yeah.
28:30It's my house.
28:31Good morning, good morning.
28:42Welcome back.
28:43I missed y'all so much.
28:45So today we'll be talking about college essays, right?
28:48The personal inside questions and college essays.
28:50Now, some of y'all have probably started.
28:52Some of y'all may think you're even done.
28:54I promise you, you are not.
28:55I'm sure everybody is on different pages, which is cool.
28:58Y'all ready to do it?
28:59Give me a yes in the chat if you're ready to do it.
29:02So as you can see, there's eight words on the screen, right?
29:05Think about which words y'all identify with.
29:11And I want you to tell me which four you think represents you the best.
29:19Raven, I got creative, talented, fighter, resourceful.
29:22Yes, I love whoever is giving thumbs up to everybody else.
29:26Interact with each other, y'all.
29:28Come on now.
29:29Be each other's support system.
29:31I can't be the only one supporting y'all.
29:33A leader because in life, when it comes to any aspect of life,
29:36from school projects and my family, I always step up.
29:40Yes, you do, Javonte.
29:42What are these words?
29:43What do these have to do with the UCP IQs?
29:45Each one of these is its own personal insight question.
29:49And I'm just going to clarify again, the personal insight questions
29:52are the eight questions that are required for the UC system.
29:56You don't have to write all eight.
29:58We're going to get into it.
30:07When you send it to me, I'm going to have some edits.
30:10And I'm doing it with the most love and humility that I can.
30:15But remember, I've been trained on this.
30:18I've talked to admissions people.
30:20I've been trained by UCLA, UC Berkeley, admissions people.
30:23Okay?
30:24So I know what they're looking for.
30:25And I know what a good essay looks like.
30:27All right, sharing screen.
30:33The personal insight questions are about getting to know you better.
30:37We want to hear about your accomplishments, talents, interests, and experiences.
30:43All the things that make you a great UC applicant.
30:46All right.
30:47I want y'all to please make an appointment.
30:49All right?
30:50Thank y'all so much for showing up today.
30:52I really appreciate y'all.
30:53Happy Monday.
30:54I know we are close to the end of the quarter.
30:57So please make sure your grades are looking good.
30:59Bye, Mr. Cam.
31:01You're welcome.
31:02Bye.
31:06I didn't see Emily.
31:08This is like one of the most important things for her application.
31:11And I'm really hoping that she's not discouraged or too overwhelmed.
31:15I don't know what's going on.
31:16You know, I don't like to assume.
31:18I texted Emily a week and a half ago.
31:22She hasn't gotten back to me.
31:24So I really need to go ahead and check in on her.
31:30So easy to get left on read.
31:32They sent me the test already.
31:46We'll be working tomorrow.
31:47Tomorrow?
31:48Yeah.
31:49So you're going to go back for the whole week?
31:51Yep.
31:53I'm back Friday, like always.
31:57That's good.
31:58I mean, good and bad.
32:00I mean, at least you finally got a job again.
32:07Here at Deer Valley High School,
32:09we're close to 60% socioeconomically disadvantaged.
32:13And so with that comes a lot of challenges.
32:18Hopefully it doesn't get canceled.
32:19I know.
32:21I do traffic control.
32:23I've been doing this for a little more than two years.
32:26And it's kind of tough, but you know what I mean?
32:30It is what it is.
32:31It's a job.
32:35I got to drive every Monday all the way down to Paradise.
32:39That's where we work.
32:40We're doing 11, 10 hours defense.
32:47It's all day.
32:49And it's not easy for everyone, I think.
32:56With my dad and his job, it was hard on all of us.
33:00He's our main source of income here.
33:03And for him to not be working, it was like, you know, what are we going to do?
33:11My mom and I make enough to pay the rent.
33:15But like, what about food?
33:16What about utilities?
33:18What about, you know, Wi-Fi?
33:20The girls need it for school now.
33:23I would say the pandemic just blew open the socioeconomic gaps.
33:31We have a lot of students who have to worry about,
33:33am I going to be able to stay in this house?
33:35Is my family going to be good?
33:37Would it be better for me to go work so I can supplement income?
33:41And so they wear multiple hats at a very young age.
33:45They're not allowed to just be a kid and focus on college.
33:49In the beginning of the virus, he just had a couple jobs.
33:53And like, it was once in a while and it was enough to like sustain
33:57with the rent and everything.
33:59So when he finally was able to get the job in Paradise
34:02and like going out there Monday through Friday,
34:05like it was a consistent job.
34:08But with the pandemic, he's not sure when he's going to go back.
34:12So it's just one thing after another.
34:14It's like, we're never going to be certain.
34:16That is tough.
34:19And a lot of our young people are experiencing the same thing.
34:25I've always been a very independent person.
34:29But now it's like all I'm doing is going from my bedroom to the kitchen
34:33and then I go to work.
34:35I work at Target.
34:36I work in the front end.
34:37It's really hard now following COVID procedures.
34:42There's only so much water you could buy, so much toilet paper that you could buy.
34:46And it was times where people would literally cuss and get angry.
34:49And it's like...
34:51This year, we knew that education would be the last thing on the minds of some of our children.
34:57And they have relatives who may have been sick.
34:59And you know, all kinds of issues were critical.
35:02And then it's like, I have to think like my parents.
35:05How they feel with me going to work and having to deal with hundreds of thousands of people
35:09that come in and out of Target every day from who knows where.
35:13You just never know.
35:14As a college advisor, it's very tough because, you know, you want the best for your students
35:22and you want every student to succeed no matter what.
35:25And then all these other things hit.
35:27And now they're just more forces that you're working against to try and get these students
35:31to believe that they can get into higher education.
35:34You can't stop paying the rent.
35:36You can't stop paying bills.
35:38My kids, they just start working because they're not in school.
35:42That's why they start working a little more and helps a lot.
35:46You got a little more money from everyone now.
35:48It's not just me.
35:52We want to make sure that every student has an equal opportunity to get to wherever they want to go in life.
36:03Hey, Cadence. Happy Friday.
36:05The internet runs really slowly. Is it loading? I see.
36:17Oh, no.
36:22Oh, my God.
36:23This is too much.
36:28I don't know.
36:30But I'm back, though.
36:34I never even saw you leave.
36:35That's the crazy part.
36:37So what you gonna do, Mr. Cam?
36:38You gonna still do this stuff for Dear Valley when you get accepted and you go to your schools next year?
36:45This is a full-time job. Probably not.
36:48You'll be gone?
36:50This is a two- to three-year fellowship.
36:53This is my second year.
36:56So you're about to be gone.
36:59You're out.
37:00Maybe. We'll see.
37:02Ain't no maybe. You know you're gonna be out.
37:05We'll see.
37:07Hey, we live in the world we living in right now.
37:10Ain't no what's gonna happen next year.
37:13That's what I'm saying.
37:15So two things I need you to do this weekend.
37:19All right. I'm ready now.
37:22First, look up the schools.
37:25Put in your parent information into the CSUs.
37:29I don't even really know what I want to do in life anymore.
37:32What'd you say?
37:33Do I really want to go to something?
37:35Do I really want to go outside of California?
37:38You know?
37:39I'm seeing you so flip-floppy.
37:41I think for her it's really about building confidence.
37:44You know, when she's kind of faced with certain things,
37:46she's just like, oh, well.
37:47Like, that is her favorite saying.
37:49Like, oh, well, like, you know, maybe this college thing isn't for me.
37:52And I don't think she actually means it.
37:54But I think with a lot of students, it's like trying at something
37:59and possibly not succeeding is really scary.
38:01What if I sit here and I do all this stuff, right?
38:05Hear me out.
38:06Hear me out.
38:07My ear right there.
38:08Hear me out.
38:09Just think about it.
38:10If I sit here, I do all this stuff, right?
38:14Or nothing.
38:17But alternative point, maybe.
38:20Mm-hmm.
38:21You do all this, right?
38:22And like, you go to college.
38:25I guess so.
38:26Boom.
38:27That's the plan.
38:28Really?
38:30Uh-huh.
38:31Yeah.
38:32Okay.
38:33All done.
38:34Done for the day.
38:35Have an amazing weekend.
38:37You as well.
38:38You as well.
38:39Bye, Mr. K.
38:40Bye, Cadence.
38:41Talk to you later.
38:42Well, I thought I was going to have a regular year, so I was just going to play a high school season and try to get some scholarships.
38:53But like, I don't know.
38:56I don't think they're going to let us go back to school.
38:58I don't think they're going to let us do anything.
39:00Even if they lift it to home order, like, I still don't think they're going to let us do anything.
39:05It's not looking like it.
39:08But AAU is just, it's more open.
39:11Many kids will look to keep playing with a club or prep team here in the Valley.
39:15Club Sports has been traveling out of state with their teams just so they can play in competitive games.
39:19It's nothing like the competition when you're, like, going against somebody and you're all pumped up.
39:39The adrenaline rush is different than other sports.
39:43I play on a travel team called Team Spates, California.
39:46We play locally and then we play out of state once or twice a month.
39:52The AAU program is outside of any school.
39:56We basically are a club team.
39:59We travel, we go to other states, we travel throughout California, the West Coast.
40:03TMS on three, one, two, three.
40:05Coach Ruben and his team, they're helping get more looks for scouts for college.
40:10So hopefully that goes down as expected and I can do it.
40:14We shut down for the first few months.
40:17You know, we took precautions and we kind of gradually continue our process of trying to get these kids an opportunity.
40:23Depending on the type of work that he puts in, Ahmad has a bright future.
40:27He's very athletic, very quick.
40:29Left, right, north, south, he can move.
40:32People have to build on those type of characteristics that Ahmad has by nature.
40:36So that is a big plus for him.
40:39And I use him in that aspect with our team.
40:42Ahmad, Ahmad.
40:43Good talk, good talk.
40:47What happened?
40:51Go get Derrick.
40:52Off the court, Ahmad is, he's like a ray of fun.
40:56We actually went out of state and we had a ball.
40:57We laughed, joked, clowned on each other.
41:00He's a great kid.
41:06Way to play, boy.
41:09Way to play, boy.
41:11Good game, good game, good game.
41:13Good game, good game.
41:14Way to play, way to play.
41:15First game back in a minute.
41:19We started off bad and we didn't get a chance to catch back up.
41:22So we lost.
41:24Ahmad was rusty.
41:26As expected.
41:28I'm just glad he got a chance to get out here and get the ball going.
41:31You know what I mean?
41:32Get the wheels turning for him so he can get back into shape.
41:35Yeah, yeah, yeah.
41:37Everybody out here, they say it takes 30 days of doing something repetitively
41:40to break a bad habit, to start something, okay?
41:46And it looks like I'm going to have to get y'all 30 days straight
41:50to break some of these habits that you guys have.
41:53And I'm trying to tell you what's going to help you in your career.
41:58Because you're a hell of athlete.
42:01This is why I'm constantly on you and I ride you.
42:03Because you're too good and there's no excuse.
42:07None.
42:08No, oh, well, maybe he's lax in this or he's lax in that.
42:11You have no excuse not to be doggish every single game.
42:17Especially when there's competition for you.
42:20Oh, these dudes can play.
42:22I got to go play too.
42:23But I got to do everything.
42:25That's what a player does.
42:27Not a playing guard, a shooting guard, small forward, power forward, center.
42:30But a player.
42:31You got to play together.
42:33All right, let's be all-around players.
42:36TMS on three.
42:37One, two, three.
42:39I'm just trying to focus on working on my skills.
42:42So if I get an opportunity to do something, just take it.
42:45Everything depending on the season, really.
42:47I'm really trying to be careful with Cadence.
43:01Last week, she was kind of in this place of like, I don't even know if I want to go to college kind of thing.
43:05She's persevered her whole life, and I want her to see that perseverance happens in an academic space too.
43:11Just trying to keep them motivated to keep going.
43:14It's really hard for me to navigate, but I'm not giving up.
43:16There she is.
43:28Hey!
43:29What's up superstar?
43:30What's the first application due from today?
43:33UC applications.
43:35And that's the focus right now.
43:36So let's look at that.
43:38You sent it?
43:40No.
43:42I'm trying to pull it up right now.
43:43Mm-hmm.
43:44You're talking about the, um, the PIQs, right?
43:47Mm-hmm.
43:49I really only have like one.
43:51That's all the way done though.
43:53More or less.
43:56It's very much so less, but...
43:58We are at that point where we can start writing those.
44:04I have.
44:05I have.
44:06It's just like, it's too much.
44:08We are on a time crunch.
44:11You're going to have to come back during office hours.
44:13Oh my gosh.
44:15No.
44:17Um.
44:18I was writing them.
44:19Mm-hmm.
44:20And then I was like, oh my gosh.
44:23I gave up.
44:24I gave up on both of those.
44:25We can't give up on these.
44:26We got, like I said, 12 more days.
44:28Rather than just looking at the questions
44:30and trying to answer the questions, right?
44:32Let's think about...
44:35What story do you want to tell?
44:37What story do you feel like is important to your life?
44:40Tell me about yourself.
44:42What do you live with?
44:45I live with my uncle, my auntie, and my cousins.
44:49Are your parents in the picture?
44:50My dad is.
44:51He stays in Las Vegas.
44:53Oh, okay.
44:55Yeah.
44:57Why do you live out here?
44:58And he lives in Las Vegas.
45:00Um, because my granny has custody over me, so I stay out here.
45:07Okay.
45:08You stay with my granny, but then she, um, she stay in the old folks' home now, so I stay with my uncle.
45:14Gotcha.
45:15Well, I've heard some very unique things that can very much be important to write about here, if you're willing.
45:27What do you think?
45:29Yeah, I know.
45:30I don't see what you're talking about.
45:32But I want you to realize, like, you have stuff to talk about, and I know it's really hard to think about it, and I know it's even harder to write about it.
45:42You have all the potential in the world, and these schools, they want to know about your life.
45:52And it's up to you whether you want to tell them about it or not.
45:55So I need you to do me a favor.
46:00You think you can come to office hours today?
46:06No.
46:07Why?
46:09Because I was taking a nap.
46:10I'm tired.
46:11Cadence, we gotta talk about this.
46:16And I can't have you just avoiding it forever.
46:19If this is what you want to do.
46:24Can you promise me that she'll be there?
46:28Mmm, okay.
46:30Sure.
46:31Sure.
46:33Sure.
46:34Gotcha.
46:35I'll be there.
46:36Alright.
46:37I'll talk to you soon.
46:38Bye.
46:41Do y'all see what he put me through every time?
46:44Oh, goodness.
46:46Oh.
47:03The personal insight questions are about getting to know you better.
47:07Your responses will not hurt you.
47:08They can only enhance our understanding of you as an applicant.
47:12It's about sharing your personality, background, interests, and achievements in your own unique voice.
47:19The best responses are those that are authentic and best represent who you are.
47:25Relax.
47:27Use your own voice.
47:28Question number four.
47:29Describe how you have worked to overcome a barrier you have faced.
47:33You don't want to spend your whole time thinking about what angered you or just affected you and made you feel bad.
47:51You don't want to think about that.
47:52You don't want to spend your whole time thinking about what angered you or just affected you and made you feel bad.
48:01You don't want to think about that.
48:02We want to learn about your life experience so we can better understand you.
48:12It's about sharing your personality, background, interests, and achievements.
48:17I'm struggling with pretty much everything.
48:35At this point I am over it.
48:38I have not heard from Emily in a couple months from the looks of it.
48:58I don't think that she's doing the applications.
49:02That's just me assuming though.
49:04I don't really know.
49:07I'm going to check Emily and just see if she's been actually going to class.
49:15I look like she's been in and out.
49:17She has all F's in all her classes.
49:19I had a lot of missing assignments.
49:21She had a lot of absences.
49:23Yeah, she was going to class every day or most days.
49:27At the end of September and beginning of October, she started missing.
49:37Yeah.
49:38So, like I said, it's probably a bigger thing.
49:41I wanted to check out my report cards.
49:42We just had report cards come out, like, last week, two weeks ago.
49:56A large percentage of DMSU...
49:58Okay.
49:59We just had report cards come out,
50:04like last week, two weeks ago.
50:06And basically there was a lot of Ds and Fs
50:09on the report cards.
50:10So I guess a lot of students aren't really doing well
50:12with this online learning.
50:16Like, you know, we're just turning in assignments
50:18at this point.
50:19Teachers and parents are doing wrong.
50:21What students, teaching kids are doing?
50:22And nobody wants to stare at a screen
50:23for eight continuous hours.
50:26It's probably called the BC-Ballard.
50:27Leadership will develop Ds and Ds and Fs.
50:31It's a lot.
50:3358% of the students in the entire school
50:36have at least one F.
50:38And if you break that down,
50:39that's three out of every five students almost
50:42has at least an F.
50:44And that doesn't include the Ds.
50:46And my job for getting students on track
50:48for A through G requirements,
50:50which are the California college requirements,
50:53are making sure they don't have any Ds or Fs
50:56in their main classes.
50:57Basic reason for campaign finance regulation is to...
51:02We're seeing kids who didn't fail,
51:05who were on target to graduate,
51:07struggling with that right now.
51:14How is that wrong?
51:15And we're seeing that not just at our schools,
51:17it's nationwide.
51:19Too many students learning from home are failing.
51:22That is a message from school leaders
51:24as they try to fix this problem.
51:26Schools across the country have reported more Ds and Fs
51:29since COVID-19 shut down schools.
51:31From technical problems to the lack of interaction
51:33with their teachers,
51:35and grades started to drop across the country.
51:37Sharp increase in the number of failing grades
51:40during virtual learning.
51:41Some parents fear their kids' struggles with virtual learning
51:44will impact their college hopes.
51:48Where do I begin?
51:49Um...
51:51I am...
51:57concerned about where we are
52:02as far as serving students in the coronavirus pandemic right now.
52:08We are saying they're not engaging,
52:11or, you know, they have their cameras off.
52:13One of my students has an A in every single class
52:18and has an F in math.
52:19That doesn't tell me that the student doesn't want to learn
52:22or that the student isn't trying or that the student isn't engaged.
52:24It tells me that there's a problem with the way that we're serving the students, right?
52:28I know we talked about how the coronavirus was going to exacerbate inequities and equalities,
52:34and this is an exact example with Deer Valley.
52:37It's crazy right now, and, you know, I don't really know what to do about it,
52:42and I think that's one of the toughest things for me, being in my position,
52:45is that there has to be a different answer.
52:47There has to be something else,
52:48because we cannot be in a space right now
52:51where we're just waiting for the next thing.
52:53We're just waiting for this to blow over.
52:55Like, I think when the dust settles,
52:56this is going to be really bad.
53:05So I just read this article.
53:08That was in the New York Times.
53:12The pandemic has changed everything about the stressful admissions process,
53:15adding even more strain on students,
53:18forcing millions of students to learn remotely,
53:20canceling college tours and standardized testing dates,
53:23and preventing legions of students from participating in sports
53:26and other extracurricular activities.
53:28High school seniors and those who guide them through the admissions process
53:31say that the level of uncertainty and disruption is off the charts,
53:35putting more families in financial crisis,
53:37and making weighty decisions about the future more fraught than ever.
53:39I've never gotten emotional with this kind of stuff.
53:50I think reading that kind of breaks down the walls a little bit
53:54and makes you realize, like,
53:57I don't realize there's no fear.
53:58No, no, do you think there's no fear?
53:59The rest of the creators of the campaign says there's no fear â
53:59So rude.
54:00I don't have questions.
54:01And people said there's no fear.
54:02but leave ablick and
