00:00My main goal is to get into a UC.
00:03Wow!
00:04Wow! Good job!
00:09My number one school, Howard University.
00:12Howard University.
00:13We always joke about, like, going to Howard together
00:15and being roommates and everything.
00:17I run the 400, the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles.
00:21I'm really gonna do something this season,
00:23make everybody know who I am and what I do on the track.
00:28We still get to play football.
00:30But Nate ruled out indoor sports like basketball.
00:33Yeah, we really need this season, to be honest.
00:35I don't know.
00:36I'm hoping we can actually get a season
00:38and then I can impress some scouts
00:40so I can get us some scholarships.
00:41You have to. You have to play this season.
00:43Yeah, hell yeah.
00:44Once you're out of high school, you don't have another chance.
00:56So these are the schools that I got into.
00:58A lot of students are getting accepted into schools,
01:00which I'm so happy about.
01:01UC Santa Cruz.
01:03Xavier offered me a scholarship.
01:05I've heard back from three schools so far.
01:07Sac State, CSULA, and CSU Dominguez Hill.
01:11My first email was for Sacramento State.
01:14I yelled, Mom, because I was really excited.
01:17It was my first college that I got excited to.
01:19Dear Javante, it is with great pleasure
01:21to be right to inform me that you have been selected
01:23for a conditional admission
01:24to California State University, East Bay.
01:26Congratulations.
01:27I'm pleased to inform you that you've been admitted
01:29to San Jose State University for the full 2021 term.
01:32Maybe like a week or two afterwards, I checked my email.
01:34The name of the email is UCLA Admissions.
01:36So I was like, oh.
01:37But then I said, oh, check out the campus.
01:39I'm like, okay.
01:42So, yeah.
01:44Sacramento State welcoming me to their Hornet family.
01:49And, yeah.
01:53You know, I'm happy about it.
01:56But, honestly, it's not the schools
01:59that I really want to go to.
02:02Yeah.
02:04It's good that it's there.
02:06But my heart is really set on leaving to go to Howard.
02:09Morehouse, they never send me any email information
02:12about, like, if I got it or not.
02:14I check my email, like, every three hours.
02:17Especially for UC Santa Cruz.
02:19It's top of my list.
02:21I checked, like, my spam and my junk
02:23and my regular emails.
02:24I checked all of it.
02:25I just want to hear back from all the schools
02:28that I've applied to before I make any decisions.
02:31I'm just waiting for USC and Howard.
02:35So, yeah.
02:38What do they say?
02:39Expect the best.
02:40Prepare for the worst.
02:41That's what we're going to do.
02:42So, yay.
02:43Work all day till my feet get slow.
02:46Keep on working till the whistle blow.
02:49Oh, when the night time come.
02:52It's on when the night time come.
02:54Wear this mask on my face all day.
02:56Smiling like I'm never knew what you saw.
02:58Oh, until the night time come.
02:59It's on when the night time comes.
03:00Wear this mask on my face all day.
03:01Smiling like I'm never knew what you saw.
03:04Come, it's on when the night time come
03:07Wear this mask on my face all day
03:10Smilin' like I'm j 84
03:11No, what you said
03:12Ho, oh, it till the night time come
03:15It's on when the night time
03:18Hey, hey, hey, hey
03:18Wear this mask on my face all day
03:21Smilin' like I'm j 85
03:22No, what you say
03:24Ho, oh, it's not me
03:26Just what you say
03:27It's on when the night time come
03:29It ain't really over it
03:31It's just begun
03:32We gonna be alright when the night time come.
03:35Tired of trying to figure what I might become.
03:38I just wanna sing my song when the night time come.
03:54Like a week and a half ago, our AD came to the football practice.
03:58They told us that we're clear for indoor sports like volleyball and basketball and stuff like that.
04:03So that's good news.
04:05You are our last of the Mojikas.
04:08There you go. We have a deal.
04:17Basketball starts next week.
04:19That's what I've been waiting for.
04:23We all know that last year was a pretty hard year for everyone.
04:26And bringing back sports just gave a sense of hope in a way.
04:30I definitely think it's a little crazy how all these sports are back.
04:34Like literally all the sports are back.
04:36But not, we're not in school.
04:40Freedom, liberty, heritage, and Pittsburgh is going back with a hybrid system.
04:45And we're not, we don't get that.
04:47Like they get in their prom and all that, we're not getting none of that.
04:49The email literally said like, we have ruled you guys out for school.
04:53Like basically like that, but in like bigger words.
05:00They just, they ruled us out.
05:01They came to a vote and ruled us out.
05:03So we don't have all that.
05:04It is time for the vote to remain in distance learning for the remainder of the school year.
05:08Yes.
05:09Yes.
05:10Yes.
05:11Yes.
05:12Yes.
05:13Yes.
05:14Motion carries 5-0.
05:16But they didn't have no reason.
05:19They just had a vote and the vote wasn't good enough.
05:24I've been in school all this time to have a senior year, be a senior on campus and stuff.
05:28Like that's what you want to do.
05:31But I didn't, I don't get to do that.
05:36My whole senior year was taken from here.
05:40Like with the class of 2020.
05:42They had a couple of months, you know, homecoming, that stuff.
05:47I had none of that.
05:49None of it.
05:50Everything was taken away.
05:53Graduation is the most important thing that everyone looks forward to.
06:00It's like none of that.
06:01Well, I don't want to say it's not going to happen, but just realistically, it's like what actually happened.
06:05It's going to be online, it's going to be in a person, I don't know.
06:12I hope for just something to happen.
06:16Some sort of way to make us happy.
06:20You know we've been in school for this long, waiting for this moment.
06:25Walk across the stage.
06:28They're calling your name.
06:30Your family and friends cheering for you.
06:35You just want that.
06:37And it's sad because, let's be realistic.
06:40Be realistic.
06:43We're probably not going to get it.
06:44This month and next month are going to be big months of like hearing back from schools.
07:07And so I'm really excited about that so they can make that decision by May 1st.
07:13So we're also going to do a making a college decision workshop.
07:18Also like looking at community college applications for students who are looking at community college as an option.
07:25Hello everybody.
07:27Hey.
07:29Javonte.
07:31Hey Mr. Kim.
07:32What's up Ebby?
07:33Hey Mr. Kim.
07:34I love that Emily is with us.
07:36What's going on Emily?
07:38Hello.
07:40Good to see you.
07:41Virtually.
07:42See your name.
07:43Missed you.
07:45Missed you guys too.
07:47I actually have a couple of congratulations in order.
07:50Very first off, congratulations to all of my folks who have gotten into schools or are hearing back from schools.
07:58Super happy for y'all.
07:59Right?
08:00Big shout out.
08:01Shout your people out in the chat right now.
08:02Big shout out to y'all.
08:03Okay?
08:04Congratulations.
08:06So I'm on the same route as you.
08:07So this whole presentation today, we're going through it together because I'm trying to make my decision too.
08:13I'm like in the middle of it right now.
08:15So I'm with y'all.
08:17But thank y'all.
08:19So we're going to be talking about how to make a college decision.
08:21Like I said, should I go to any of these universities or should I go to a community college first?
08:25And I know that's a thought that a lot of you are having, especially in COVID times.
08:34It definitely will be between East Bay and community college.
08:38The two years are going to be the same everywhere.
08:41That's my main thing.
08:42Like if it was on campus, I would definitely want to leave and go because like you're getting the college experience.
08:49If schools ain't be online anyway, it's like why like waste the money?
08:52So this isn't to say I know where I'm going to choose, but this pros and cons list can kind of help me weigh out my options.
09:00This is a school that you're going to spend two, three, four years of your life, right?
09:06It's not an easy decision to make.
09:09But at the end of the day, I want to be comfortable with my decision.
09:12I want to be able to defend why I'm going to the school I'm going to.
09:15So that is very important for y'all to also understand is that this is a very much a process of, you know, picking the best school for you and feeling good about the place that you're going to go.
09:28Please know what's really important is y'all are superstars and the schools that y'all are hearing from, getting accepted to, even waitlisted to, it would be a privilege for them to have you.
09:42Y'all are the prize here. So please take that into account when making this decision as well.
09:49Other than that, for my folks who got to go.
09:52Much love.
09:54Take care of yourselves.
09:56Bye.
10:01Now all y'all want to talk at the same time.
10:05Y'all have a good day.
10:07Bye y'all. Have a good week.
10:08You too.
10:13I just feel good.
10:16We haven't been able to do nothing. Everybody's been at home.
10:23I mean, you with your family, but like, you're not with your friends.
10:27We're just trying to find our form, get back to running again. Come on over here.
10:30It's pretty nice, honestly, because like, just, just being there.
10:36I'm singing in the rain.
10:41What a glorious...
10:44Who put these rocks on my track?
10:47All right, kids.
10:49Go.
10:51Easy.
10:53If you want to be a good team, we've got to work out all these kinks.
10:56Our first game is Tuesday.
10:57Okay, let's do it right.
10:59Come on.
11:01We have to work through all that, all that adversity.
11:04Where's the help?
11:07Encourage each other to get through everything that we have at home and school and all that.
11:11Hand swing, hand swing.
11:21Good, good, good, good.
11:24Yeah.
11:26Foot swing in her hands.
11:27It was, it was pretty, I don't want to say it was bad, but like, I didn't think that I was that out of shape.
11:34But like, I mean, I guess, yeah.
11:39Okay, Ebby, you're okay?
11:42All right.
11:44Thanks, Coach Green.
11:45You got it, Ebby. I'll see you tomorrow.
11:47See you tomorrow.
11:49DB on me, DB on three, one, two, three.
11:50DB!
11:57So far, I got accepted into Cal State LA, San Francisco State, Sac State, and I'm still waiting on UC Santa Cruz, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego.
12:21But like, Santa Cruz, the campus, it's like a whole forest.
12:24And since like, the past year or two, I've been more active.
12:29I think I would enjoy the campus a lot more.
12:34Usually, like, usually, like whenever I get a notification from my email, I like, I get really anxious.
12:40So then I saw UC Santa Cruz, and I was like...
12:45So then I opened it, and said, I got admitted, and I got really excited.
12:49Immediately, I yelled down from my room, Ma!
12:52And she's like yelling me back, like, what?
12:54So I ran down, showed up my application.
12:57She was really excited for me.
12:59Back in the Philippines, I always remember my mom told me, even though we're not rich, you know, just give me your diploma, and that's thing that we're so proud.
13:09Me and my family, we have a own group chat on iMessage, and I posted it on there, and then all my cousins, they've already went through all of it, so then they're also giving me a lot of tips and advice.
13:21Like, especially something I didn't really think I was going to get into a UC, so that was, like, exciting for me.
13:30I was so nervous.
13:32I don't think they've told me how much it's going to cost, but they have sent me some stuff about financial aid.
13:37FAFSA hasn't really, like, given me, like, the amount of financial aid I'm going to get.
13:42I know, like, that UCs are definitely going to be a lot more expensive.
13:46That's why we applied for FAFSA.
13:48We're trying to look for a lot of alternative help, so his dream will come true.
13:55I think, because it's too expensive.
13:58It's mainly, let's, uh, apply, figure it out later.
14:02So, it's got me anxious, too.
14:03Cadence texted me the week of Howard's decisions coming out, and she was, like, super excited.
14:22We were disappointed that she didn't get into Spelman, but we were really looking forward to Howard.
14:28And I was like, whenever they email you, don't look. Let's look together. Like, um, let's get on a video chat.
14:34We're going to go chat.
14:43This is absolutely the toughest part of my job.
15:05After working with these students for months and these particular students for a couple of years, it's always tough.
15:13But I really try and tell students, like, look at all the great opportunities you do have, but also look at how much that experience made you grow.
15:28Hello.
15:32How much are you?
15:33Hi, Evie.
15:36How are you? What's up? What's going on? How's track and cheer and all that good stuff?
15:41I'm doing good. You know, a little bit stressed, but I'm happy to be busy again, like, you know, have stuff to do.
15:48Because before I was just like, this is not normal for me just to be at home.
15:52How do you feel about the track season? You feel like you're going to be competitive?
15:54Hmm. It's looking a little bit rough due to the fact that we have our first track meet next week, I think.
16:04Yes, I am still not in fighting form.
16:08Yeah. Has practice and stuff been rough?
16:12Um, yeah. Yeah, it's been pretty bad, but we'll get there eventually.
16:19What's up with college stuff? Let's talk about it.
16:22Uh, I mean, I definitely did get, you know, rejected from a lot more schools than I got in.
16:31But it's okay because, you know, a lot of those schools I didn't want to go to in the first place.
16:35Yeah, you didn't need them.
16:37But I did, I didn't get into Howard.
16:40You did or did not?
16:41I did not.
16:42Okay. I don't know, what the heck?
16:46Yeah, a lot of people didn't get in.
16:47I know. Even people with, like, 3.9s got waitlisted.
16:53Who knows?
16:55Yeah, I'm sorry.
16:56After telling them, like, this, you know, do this and this will help you and, you know, working on essays and late nights with students and all of those things, it's always tough.
17:09A lot of denials came that I kind of wasn't expecting and I was pretty surprised.
17:17Our kids had a, had a tough year in terms of getting admission.
17:22This year, the UCs saw record applications.
17:25After years of debate over equity and access, a key college admissions predictor, standardized tests, gone.
17:32Quite a few kids put on waiting lists that usually would not be.
17:36And these are outstanding kids with outstanding GPAs and leadership skills.
17:41During the pandemic, since test scores no longer stood the barrier to entry, more students felt emboldened to apply.
17:48What this means is the more the students apply, the more challenging it is for admissions.
17:54And that's what trends kind of look like for 2021 and beyond.
18:02I feel like that was part of the reason why I didn't get into Howard, because so many students applied.
18:08So, yeah.
18:09Hopefully the universities and colleges are looking at this process again to say, how are we picking the best kids?
18:18Who's, who's not in that should be in?
18:20But, you know, if you run a race that you don't know how to win, how do you win?
18:26I don't know.
18:27I think that there is an injustice, especially like with a lot of the bigger schools.
18:31Everybody, like, thinks that, you know, big school, big school, better education, you know, but that's not always the case, so.
18:40What about finances at these different schools?
18:44Whatever school gives me the most financial aid is, honestly, where I'm going to be headed.
18:50So.
18:53And if not San Jose State, then CSULA.
18:56I'm proud of you.
18:58Be happy for yourself.
19:01Speaking from experience, as someone who was denied from every UC, when I applied out of high school, those things don't validate you.
19:10You know, they don't make, they don't make ebby ebby.
19:13You're the prize at the end of the day, not the school.
19:15You're going to college next year, so that's really dope.
19:19So, remember that and be proud of yourself.
19:23Thank you, Mr. Cam.
19:25I really do appreciate that.
19:27Good luck on your first track meet coming up.
19:30Work hard.
19:31Bye, Mr. Cam.
19:32Bye. Have a good day.
19:37One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
19:47Was that me over at track?
19:50Honestly, I don't want to cheer anymore.
19:53Because I didn't get into Howard.
19:59Especially after I didn't get into Howard.
20:03But you just got to deal with it.
20:06Shake the feeling.
20:08Forget Howard.
20:10Bye.
20:11Do not mark jumps.
20:13Do this.
20:14Got it?
20:15So let's keep going.
20:16But I'm excited for basketball season.
20:19Five, six, seven, eight.
20:22Not excited, but looking forward to it.
20:26Eight, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.
20:30One, two, three, seven, five, six, seven, eight.
20:33I've just been all over the place.
20:37Good practice, guys.
20:39I still waiting to hear from a couple of schools.
20:42But then Mr. Cam told me it's not in my best interest to wait to hear on those schools.
20:46Rather than to just go ahead and make my decision now.
20:50So, yeah.
20:52Enjoy your weekend.
20:54Enjoy your weekend.
20:54Enjoy your weekend.
20:55Enjoy your weekend.
20:59Yeah.
21:00As for our basketball team...
21:05VVAL champs can't say anything about Deer Raleigh's basketball team.
21:11If any one of the sports team was the best, it was by far the basketball team.
21:17Yeah, we had a whole winning streak.
21:23Before the pandemic, we won the league championship for boys' varsity basketball after such a long time.
21:33We were 9-0 going into our last conference game, and so we had a chance to make history.
21:39And no Deer Valley team has ever gone undefeated throughout league, and we were able to win conference.
21:45This was the first time that we would be VAL champs in about, I want to say, at least five years.
21:51Maybe even more than that.
21:53So, it was a really big deal for us.
21:58So, that just adds on to the pressure of this year.
22:01Sports are, like, very important to me.
22:05It's, like, my main motivation to, like, keep going.
22:15Went to Freedom my sophomore year, and then I transferred from there to DV because of their basketball.
22:21I thought I would have a better opportunity after DV.
22:24DV on three.
22:25One, two, three.
22:26DV!
22:27You know, when he started high school because of basketball.
22:29At that time, it did benefit him.
22:32My junior year was, like, one of the better years.
22:35And then this year would have been one of the better years for sure.
22:38But everything got canceled.
22:40Nobody was prepared for COVID-19.
22:47And to just have to stop everything.
22:51It's just like, you know, it was on and it was gone.
22:54Some kids took the initiative to never stop working out.
23:00So, they were at home in their garages or in their driveways with their ball and they were getting ready.
23:06And most of the kids didn't.
23:11So, I got juniors and seniors who have come back who are out of shape and who haven't done enough to keep their endurance.
23:18That's been the thing that's been most challenging to me is just trying to get them back in the mindset of doing things the right way.
23:26But, the right amount of hard work, anything's possible.
23:43That plugs in over here.
23:51The first thing that stood out to me about Ahmad
23:54the first time I ever saw him play
23:57was he plays much bigger than his size.
24:07Because he's very small in stature.
24:09About 5'6", 130.
24:13But, he plays as if he's 6'3", you know, 220.
24:19He just has that swagger and that presence when he plays.
24:23He's the toughest kid on the floor.
24:28We're the only team that didn't have a preseason.
24:32Our district didn't allow us in the gym until just over a week ago.
24:37Due to all of the obstacles that we've had to go through just to get to this point,
24:42to be able to play 10 games, it was a very difficult thing.
24:47Where's Cadence?
24:49And on top of that, because we were conference champions last year,
24:56now a target's on our back.
24:58So, everybody's looking to beat us.
25:01Let's go.
25:02Let's go.
25:03Let's go.
25:04Let's go.
25:06One, two, three.
25:07Let's go.
25:08Let's go.
25:11Defense.
25:12Defense.
25:14Come on!
25:18Yeah!
25:24One, two.
25:27You got it once, you were wide open.
25:37You were so wide open you didn't know you were wide open, right?
25:40What I don't like is the amount of offensive rebounds they're getting that's leading the
25:45shots.
25:46Let's go.
25:47Evie, one, two, three.
25:48I mean, this season doesn't feel like a season.
25:53It's hard to feel like a season when we didn't start practice until April 17th.
25:58And our first game was April 27th.
26:05Things are magnified when other schools have been practicing since the beginning of March
26:10and have 16 games where we only get 10.
26:21Our season starts off with us having to play catch-up when everybody else is already in
26:26mid-season form.
26:36Hands up, hands up, hands up!
26:38We're fighting an uphill battle here.
26:40For some of them it's a lot bigger than basketball.
26:44We won the game by one, but it was really a loss in my book.
27:03We should have beat them by more points than that.
27:04It was a bad game.
27:05I think of everything that's been going on in the world that can be very depressing and
27:10very pessimistic.
27:11But, you know, we gotta take our wins where we can.
27:17You can leave your mask off, you're fine.
27:24The Red Bull one?
27:25Possibly.
27:26We have one in Brentwood.
27:27Let's see.
27:29It was just like two weeks ago.
27:30I was on FaceTime with a male friend, just my friend.
27:37Over here?
27:38Yes.
27:39I guess I was talking loud and my dad like barged in and he saw I was on FaceTime with my friend.
27:44by the Red Bull one?
27:45Possibly.
27:47Yeah, I'm wondering if Brent would.
27:49Let's see.
27:51It was just like two weeks ago.
27:55I was on FaceTime with a male friend, just my friend.
27:59Over here?
27:59Yes.
28:01I guess I was talking loud, and my dad like barged in,
28:03and he saw I was on FaceTime with my friend.
28:05And now he's like, are you gay?
28:06And I was like, yes.
28:08I don't know if I want something sweet,
28:10or do I want coffee?
28:12What size are you doing?
28:13And then he like looked at me, and then I got mad,
28:15and then just gave me some big spiel,
28:17just why he doesn't support it, and just,
28:23just the anger.
28:25Thank you, guys.
28:26Enjoy your day.
28:28He finally like sat down, he actually thought about it,
28:31and then he actually came to me with just saying like,
28:34he was raised in different times, so it's all new to him.
28:38That first week, literally,
28:39it was just like the hardest week ever.
28:43to see like younger pictures of me actually like spending time
28:46with my dad.
28:47Just to look through him and just be like,
28:48dang, that's back when everything was like,
28:50what's the word?
28:51Back when everything was like, I don't know,
28:52the good, a lot of people say the good old days,
28:53but that's dumb.
28:54But I mean,
28:55we talked to that when he apologized, kind of.
28:57He said, he was like, it's your life,
28:58and you can live it.
28:59So even though I love my parents,
29:01I feel like I've outgrown it,
29:01I finally realized that it was time for me
29:04just to like kind of, I gotta go.
29:08He apologized, kind of.
29:10He said, he was like, it's your life and you can live it.
29:14Even though I love my parents, I feel like I've grown it.
29:19I finally realized that it was time for me
29:21just to like, kind of, I gotta go.
29:38We still need...
29:40I'm gonna go get to go get it.
29:42I'm gonna go get it.
29:44Come on, man, man!
29:47First track main of the season.
29:48Come on, come on later.
29:49Sprint, make a point. Let's go. Let's do this.
29:51Go!
29:52Track season usually starts in January,
29:54so it's kind of a little bit weird,
29:56because by this time we'd be wrapping up.
29:58We'd be on our way to NCS and stuff like that by now.
30:03There won't be any invitationals.
30:07We might go to something local,
30:10but the idea of traveling like we did last year
30:13is just not gonna be available for us.
30:17We raced against Heritage today.
30:19Right on, kid. Right on.
30:22And Heritage usually has a pretty big team.
30:24Like, they come out with, like, 150 athletes,
30:27compared to us, who have, like, 50.
30:30We don't even have 50 this year.
30:33You never know how you're gonna race
30:35coming into a track meet,
30:37but, like, the fact that I've had, like,
30:39very little preparation.
30:43I'm nervous.
30:44I'm nervous.
30:45I'm nervous.
30:47I'm nervous.
30:48I'm nervous.
30:49I'm nervous.
30:51I'm nervous.
31:00Stay delayed, stay delayed.
31:02No. No, no, no.
31:03No, no, no.
31:08Like, going into the 100 hurdles, I was, like, real tense,
31:12like, real, like, scared of what was going to happen.
31:14Like, my biggest thing I was thinking of was just not falling.
31:17But...
31:18Sir, I'm feeling cold and cry in my car real quick.
31:21We good?
31:31Nobody looks 300.
31:34I don't really like 300, but, yeah, I don't know.
31:37We'll see.
31:38If he's in lane 5.
31:51Come on, baby.
31:53Come on, baby.
31:54This is what I planned.
31:56This is the fastest getting there.
31:58Here she comes.
31:59Get it, get it, get it, get it.
32:00Catch it!
32:01Come on!
32:02Catch it!
32:03Yeah!
32:04Come on!
32:06Woo!
32:14That a girl.
32:15Good job.
32:16Good race!
32:17Good race!
32:18I was actually extremely nervous before.
32:23Good job.
32:24Good job.
32:25But, like, I got over, so I'm deaf.
32:32Hey, Dee Dee.
32:33Let's get into the news.
32:34Here's some good news.
32:35Graduation will be in person this year.
32:39Seniors will be able to receive the diploma in the Wolverine Stadium early on June 18th.
32:43I was so excited.
32:45I think that nobody expected us to be able to have in-person graduation.
32:49That alone brought tears to some people's faces.
32:53I'll be graduating June 18th, starting at 9 a.m.
32:57I'm very happy.
32:59We got the messages, and everybody was, like, pouncing off the wall.
33:03They were sending text messages posted on social media, like, you guys seen this.
33:06I'm really happy that they're getting, like, a real graduation.
33:10They are so excited.
33:11I mean, every kid I talk to about cap and gown is like, when do I pick it up?
33:15How is this happening?
33:16Because we haven't been able to do that.
33:17Everybody's been at home.
33:22I'm super excited to celebrate with them in person.
33:26This is huge.
33:28Huge, huge for our families and our students.
33:31This graduation is going to be insane.
33:36Because we really didn't think it was going to happen.
33:38So I'm excited.
33:39I'm ready for it.
33:40Hopefully things start to get better.
33:49I'm not really a chocolate chip person.
33:51So why are we making chocolate chip cookies?
34:00What did you do in the morning?
34:03I met with my counselor, like, my school counselor, and then the therapist that the school provided.
34:10She was the one that said that she would talk to Miss Woodall to check if, like, I was going to be able to graduate.
34:18And?
34:19Um, they told me that...
34:24I'm going to put this to chew.
34:27There's this thing that allows seniors to graduate with less credits because of, like, I guess, our circumstances.
34:37So I would just have to pass my, um, my government class and my econ class.
34:42That has been, like, hard.
34:45Mm-hmm.
34:47And I'll be able to graduate.
34:51You see?
34:53So you got to get your stuff together.
34:56Well, yeah.
34:57I mean, there's, like, two months left of school, not even.
35:02And as long as I do that work, I can graduate with my class.
35:07I mean, I know that it's not going to go sideways.
35:12But I just want you to know, like, that whatever happens, but I'm there if you, like, you know, for whatever you need.
35:20I mean, it's supposed to be a little burnt.
35:25It's your type of cookie, though.
35:27I like it.
35:28I like it.
35:46He is a meerkat.
35:50Isn't today the day you have to make a decision?
35:52Yeah.
35:53Well?
35:54So I actually already made it, um, yesterday I officially...
35:59Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, yesterday?
36:01I had to, it's because, okay, so I asked for more funding from UC Riverside.
36:07Okay.
36:08And they finally got back to me and they gave me another year of funding.
36:11So wait, so you have five years from UC Riverside and five years from UCLA?
36:15Yeah.
36:16So what are you going to do?
36:22I don't know.
36:23It's hard to pass up on the UCLA offer, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to go to Riverside.
36:30Really?
36:31Yeah.
36:34I'm so proud of you, Cam.
36:37It's pretty amazing.
36:38She's an older dog.
36:39I'm 16.
36:40And we've had her since I was, like, since I was six, so ten years.
36:54I just found out that for all the UCs I applied to, I just got into Santa Cruz and then East Bay.
37:01Gotta get you some water.
37:03Santa Cruz, I feel like the academics is good, but just, like, the life there, I feel like I wouldn't have fit in.
37:10That's definitely what he is.
37:12I've gotten waitlisted for Howard, and from our house I haven't earned anything back from them.
37:17So I just assumed I didn't get in.
37:21East Bay was more of a fallback, so I would just go there just for, like, two years, and then I would transfer.
37:27I got my portraits the other day, and I wanted to look at them, so.
37:49Those are all the bigger sized ones.
37:54And then you don't want any wallets.
37:58You didn't look.
37:59I sure didn't.
38:01I talk to my auntie every day, just about anything, because we're really close.
38:08Growing up, it's like, one person I could talk to was Katie Mom.
38:14Like, that's something that I didn't have to worry about.
38:17I can openly express how I am.
38:19So I feel like since her mom was always that for me, I could be that for her.
38:24I'm the one that she looks to for support.
38:28I'm not here to judge you.
38:30I can't judge.
38:32I can't judge anybody, because I know my role was a rocky one.
38:36That's why I'm like, I can't judge anybody on their choices or decisions.
38:39Especially when I feel like life is something, like, you've got to learn by living it.
38:43Like, once you're in that moment, you're going to feel if it's right or if it's wrong.
38:46So, I'm just here for moral support.
38:50As long as she know if anything was to happen, I'm always be there.
38:54This one's for me.
38:55This one is, like, on me.
38:58But...
38:59You know her mom's not here?
39:00This one's mine.
39:01You want your mom here, like, your senior year.
39:04See you walk the stage, go to prom, things like that.
39:08I think that would be, like, the, um, the hardest part.
39:13But with the extra proofs that they gave you, all the pictures that you took in your session?
39:18You got, like, one of every post.
39:19Yep.
39:20The stress of figuring out what school you want to go to or not getting accepted into the school that you really wanted to go to, things like that.
39:30That would be hard.
39:32Just thinking about it so much and, like, spiraling into just hecka overthinking.
39:39And, like, you can commit to more than one school and see which one you really want to go to.
39:44And I was trying to look at my financial aid package.
39:47And some schools, like Sac State, they didn't have a fee.
39:52But then you got Clark Atlanta and theirs was, like, almost $500.
39:56You said $500?
39:57$500.
39:58A deposit just said you're going there.
40:00I was saying, well, if you spend $500, your mind is already made up.
40:04Yeah.
40:05Pretty much.
40:08Next year.
40:10You got me.
40:11Yeah, please.
40:12Please.
40:13Please.
40:16You know I have to go get somebody.
40:19You know I have to go get somebody.
40:20Let's go, let's go.
40:23And running in lane 4, that's Syd Valdez of Antioch, your Heat 2 winner here in the boys 400 meters.
40:31Today's BeVal Championships, my league finals, last track meet, I ran the 100 hurdles and
40:45I think I did really bad.
40:47Hold on.
40:48Come on, Kel!
40:49Come on, Kel!
40:50Come on, Kel!
40:52Okay.
40:53Sorry.
40:54I'm on to the next chapter at this point.
41:01That's in my 300s.
41:04Running in lane 3 from Freedom, Kelia Brown.
41:07Running in lane 2 from Galley.
41:10This is Gloria Honlan.
41:12I would confess her with the first name, and I guess y'all.
41:16We're here.
41:17Oh, yeah, Mark.
41:19Set.
41:21Can I come?
41:23Get your arms worked!
41:24Get your arms worked!
41:27Get your arms worked!
41:32Get your arms worked!
41:39Get your arms worked!
41:43Hi!
41:44Hi!
41:45It's kinda over now, but I did place, so.
41:51So, it felt good.
41:53There you go, Jake.
41:55Right on, kid. Right on.
41:57Let's go! Yes!
41:59Move!
42:01Come on! Yes!
42:03She caught her. That was neck and neck.
42:05That photo finish right there.
42:07I know she caught her.
42:09Hopefully,
42:11gonna walk on at San Jose State.
42:13Coach Ed used to run
42:15at San Jose State. That's his alma mater.
42:17So, definitely gonna
42:19be in contact with their coaches.
42:21See if I can work out with them during the summer
42:23and stuff like that.
42:25Tomorrow's senior
42:27night for basketball. Yeah.
42:29Got a lot going on for that.
42:31Senior send-off, graduation.
42:33That's it.
42:35High school's over.
42:37Kind of bittersweet, but...
42:39Everything!
42:41Very ready to be done.
42:43Come on, Amanda!
42:45She moving, okay?
42:47Ah!
42:49Break it down!
42:51I think Cory is...
42:53He's so out of pocket.
42:55He's so out of pocket.
43:01Most parents will say, you know,
43:03they think the world of the kid.
43:07I had this kid,
43:09and I knew when he was young
43:13that he was destined for greatness.
43:15I just had a feeling.
43:17But we had two deaths,
43:21and it was tough because he tapped out.
43:27You know, and I'm like,
43:29you can't say F it in your senior year,
43:31you know?
43:35He's been really struggling with that.
43:37He's been struggling with school.
43:39I'm kind of worried about him graduating
43:41at this point, too.
43:43Like I said, it's just, it's life.
43:45You can't control it.
43:47You can't control death.
43:49You can't control COVID.
43:51We all are experiencing it together.
43:53It was extremely tough for us.
43:55But there's a lot of kids his age
43:57that are doing far worse
43:59and have far less support than he do.
44:03I'm definitely proud of my kid.
44:05I love him.
44:06I think he knows it.
44:07Do you know I love you?
44:08Am I right?
44:09What?
44:10You know I love you?
44:11Yeah.
44:12Okay.
44:13Give me a hug.
44:14Hello.
44:15Good evening.
44:16Tonight, it's our live show.
44:18I'm a kid.
44:19I love him.
44:20I'm a kid.
44:21I love him.
44:22I think he knows it.
44:23Do you know I love you?
44:24Am I right?
44:25What?
44:26You know I love you?
44:27Yeah.
44:28Okay, give me a hug.
44:29Hello.
44:30Good evening.
44:32Tonight, it's our live show.
44:34Hello.
44:35Good evening.
44:37Tonight, it's our live show.
44:40It's our last basketball game.
44:43So with our last basketball game, we want to honor our seniors.
44:51So before I start introducing, I want to thank every athlete in this room.
44:59This has been one of the toughest times to have a sport.
45:08And especially for Deer Valley and the Antioch teams, they did not get the preseason.
45:15So they have come together as a team and fought hard these last few games.
45:21From all the athletes out here, I am so very proud of you.
45:25I'm going to start with my seniors.
45:32A couple of them did other sports and never complained.
45:38We have a runner in track.
45:40They have proved that they can do this in life.
45:44My first senior is Cadence Betancourt.
45:52This is a hard one, but I'm going to do it, Ebby.
45:54This is Ebby Oyamolani.
45:58And here are your 2021 senior basketball players.
46:08Jaden Vietas.
46:10Amari Joyner.
46:12Amad Woodard.
46:20Louis Acosta.
46:26Give a last hand to all of them.
46:28And let's get on with the game.
46:29Exactly.
46:30Exactly.
46:31Their best can't be that much better than our worst.
46:33Right?
46:34This is the last game.
46:35Last game.
46:36There's no reason to hold anything back.
46:38Everybody suffering from little injuries.
46:40You know, Devin's groin, Amari's toe, you know, Mikey's brain.
46:46Hey, it ain't no reason to hold nothing else back.
46:50Right?
46:51Because, listen, we're the better team when we're having fun.
46:54Okay?
46:55But it has to be fun to do the hard work things.
46:58It has to be fun to get back on defense and take a charge.
47:01Okay?
47:02It has to be fun to dive on the floor for a loose ball and get everybody hyped.
47:07Okay?
47:08Let's go.
47:09D.B. on lead.
47:10D.B. on lead.
47:11D.B. on lead.
47:12One, two, three.
47:13D.B.
47:14Come on.
47:15Come on.
47:17Hold down, Wilburys Spiritus!
47:19Hold down, Wilburys Spiritus!
47:21I wasn't really looking forward to this game because there's no more games after,
47:23but it's our senior night, so we got to go out and win.
47:28Stand back, yo.
47:29We about to make history.
47:30To clear the air of the mystery.
47:31Just so you know what the mission be.
47:33We positive with the energy.
47:34Still, we never lost a vision.
47:35Sometimes we got to take a second just to reposition.
47:36And never get me each other.
47:37I'm gonna kill it to the minute.
47:38We started for the future generations.
47:39Gonna fit it.
47:40Let me flip it.
47:41Yeah.
47:42Everybody ain't equipped.
47:43We harness rawness.
47:44Ain't nobody on my team.
47:45There's no more games after.
47:46There's no more games after, but...
47:47It's our senior night, so we gotta go out and win.
47:48Stand back, yo.
47:49We about to make history.
47:50To clear the air of the mystery.
47:51We're gonna be honest, rawness.
47:52Ain't nobody on my team gon' quit.
47:53We all in.
47:54With our backs on the wall, we still be ballin'.
47:56I suggest calmness before testing all this.
47:58Just gonna stay ready, no need to get, get.
48:00And if you ain't ready, you need to get, get.
48:02We all the timeless, no need to make hits.
48:04And we be everlasting so I can get a fit.
48:06I'm gonna know a walk in my shoes.
48:09Sit and have a talk with my dude.
48:10Running how I talk and what it do.
48:12We stay fresh, it ain't nothin' new.
48:14Rule number one, keep it true.
48:16Really, that's it.
48:17Just the rules of engagement.
48:18Only real ones in it so the party gon' stay lit.
48:21So hot in here you can feel the burn.
48:23And everybody only gettin' with the urn.
