00:01I want a basketball scholarship because if I'm going to college to play basketball
00:04and I'm getting a free education, you can't get better than that.
00:07Everything depending on the season, really.
00:09Currently I live with my mom in the backyard of my brother's house in a trailer.
00:14My mom chose that trailer because she wanted to feel like this is a home.
00:17We make sure that we take care of each other.
00:20Fifty-eight percent of the students in the entire school have at least one F.
00:25We're seeing kids who didn't fail, who were on target to graduate.
00:29Struggling with that right now.
00:31We are at that point where we are on a time crunch.
00:35I was writing them. Hi Caleb.
00:37Can't give up on these. We got 12 more days.
00:40And I can't have you just avoiding it forever.
00:52Alright, so for this one I want you to talk about a little bit less fluff here in this first paragraph.
00:57Okay.
00:59Spice it up a little bit.
01:00I'm really excited about office hours being a space for people to come have structure and see that there's other people here and working on these things.
01:08And I had Evie come in literally not to ask any questions but just to do work because she knows that that's a space where she can be held accountable in doing work.
01:15Lawrence, you ready?
01:17Yeah.
01:18Let's do it.
01:19Are they asking you to send your transcript to the school or are they asking you to put your counselor's name so they can input your transcripts?
01:26And there's Cadence.
01:27I'm worried that Cadence just joined just to make me happy and it's not going to actually do any work.
01:41Hey Cadence.
01:42Hey Cadence.
01:43Hey Cadence.
01:44Hey Cadence.
01:45Hey.
01:46All right.
01:47What did we get?
01:48What did we get?
01:49What did we get?
01:50What did we get?
01:51We're going to lie to you right now.
01:52I was reading the questions like the UC questions over and over.
01:54I don't know.
01:55I was over the place.
01:56I was in the room.
01:57Then I was in the kitchen.
01:58Watched a little bit of TikTok.
01:59I'm not even going to lie.
02:00Mm-hmm.
02:01Mm-hmm.
02:02You know, I was waiting for something to pop up and me to just have like this.
02:04Wow.
02:05That didn't happen though, but yeah.
02:07Okay.
02:08Maybe we can get there.
02:09Okay.
02:10Maybe we can get there.
02:11Okay.
02:12Yeah.
02:13Yeah.
02:14Yeah.
02:15Yeah.
02:16Yeah.
02:17Yeah.
02:18Yeah.
02:19Yeah.
02:20Yeah.
02:21Yeah.
02:22Yeah.
02:23I don't have that.
02:26You don't have what?
02:28Answers to these questions that these people are asking me.
02:32I don't know.
02:33We're going to come up with them.
02:34But are you motivated to apply to these schools?
02:37Not anytime soon or not.
02:40I would hope so.
02:42You're talking to me?
02:43Yeah.
02:44I would hope so, but not anytime soon.
02:47We're going to have answers to these questions that these people are asking me.
02:52Cadence.
02:53We will get the answers to the questions.
02:57So much stuff.
03:00But are you motivated to apply to the schools?
03:03Because you're the one who has to write them.
03:05I know.
03:06That's my whole thing.
03:07I don't know.
03:08I just, you have so much, you have so much to offer.
03:11And I really hate to, I hate when you do the, the old whales.
03:16I just want, I want you to work with me.
03:18These schools that we're talking about, they're like top-notch schools.
03:21But I want you to be motivated to get there.
03:25Okay.
03:26So how do we do this?
03:27How do we get motivated?
03:33Hello?
03:47She dropped.
03:48Come back home.
03:49Make sure she is going to come back home.
03:55One.
03:58Two.
04:01One.
04:02I need to be able to just like get her to remember why she's doing everything
04:31she's doing.
04:33Because I've seen where she's at on her best days, I want to remind her that it's going
04:37to be her every days and that this can be her life, you know?
04:41So I'm not going to be the one to give up on you, so.
05:01So I'm not going to be the one to give up on you.
05:31Smiling like I'm loving you, what you say
05:35What you say, what you say
05:37What's the song when the night time comes?
05:40It ain't really over, it has just begun
05:43We gonna be alright when the night time comes
05:46Tired of trying to figure what I might become
05:48I just wanna sing my song when the night time comes
06:01Everybody needs to stay safe where we are right now
06:06Do I think that we're gonna come back?
06:13Probably not, to be honest
06:15With coronavirus cases still high across the country
06:19Students, teachers and parents have been forced to adapt to distance learning
06:22Tiny droplets with the virus can travel more than six feet in certain settings
06:28Like choir practices, restaurants, or gyms, with limited ventilation
06:33We don't have a clear-cut treatment for this virus
06:39Low-income kids, as we had suspected, are likely falling farther behind
06:52Common App is commonapp.org
06:54And this is for all of the schools that are not UCs and CSUs
06:57Most of those schools are gonna be on commonapp
07:00You know you're in the right place when you see this woman
07:02Who is about to drop all her books
07:04There's just so much to the college application process
07:07They realize I have to put so many applications in
07:10They have to do FAFSA, which requires so many documents
07:13It's very overwhelming for students and it's frightening
07:15There's this college and career center calendar
07:20Certain schools have certain requirements
07:23Arizona State, it has rolling admission
07:25Howard University, who has three different application deadlines
07:31It is very overwhelming, very much so
07:34FAFSA, have you created an account yet?
07:36November 30th is the UC application deadline
07:39UC is currently not considering SAT and ACT test scores
07:43And admissions decisions due to a recent court decision
07:47The only thing I've done to prepare for college is the SAT
07:50It'll tell you whether or not you qualify for a fee waiver
07:53And they're actually looking at the trend and seeing how your grades went
07:57And they compare that to what you write in PIQs
08:00Everybody needs to put in this program
08:02It is right here, EALP, that is us
08:05Write out all the activities and awards and everything that you have been a part of
08:09If you don't have over 20, then put everything that you can think of on it
08:13Personally, the essays are probably the hardest part
08:16Give me a general feeling of how you feel about this application
08:20It was just boom, boom, boom in my face
08:24What part is the most confusing part?
08:26Everything
08:27My suggestion is to share with me your PIQs, okay?
08:34Thank y'all
08:36I still have my first ukulele
08:44That was like 12?
08:47I just looked up songs that I really liked
08:49And then I just tried to play it
08:52It's really calming for me
08:54Up here is my room
09:17It's a little bit small, to be honest
09:20I just have to crawl inside, but...
09:24I can't complain
09:25It's the first time I had my own room since I was like 4 or 5
09:28I have a roof over my head
09:30I'm okay with everything
09:40I started playing music because I want people to like
09:44Forget whatever that's happening in their life
09:46Because that's what music does for me
09:47It helps me like, lend out my frustrations
09:49It helps me through a lot of tough moments I've been having in my life
09:54For Christmas, it's birthday
09:56What do you need from Guitar Center?
09:58He loves his music
10:00My dream life is producing music with a bunch of music equipment
10:05Most of my completed songs are like...
10:08I lost them because I had to restart my whole computer
10:11I mean, I could just like play it
10:13So then y'all could hear it, I guess
10:15This one's just a work in progress
10:18This one's just a work in progress
10:34COVID wasn't here
10:35Being here, my ideal senior high school life
10:37Would be just hanging out
10:39Having a good time with friends
10:40Dances
10:41Some of the football games
10:42Singing in choir
10:44Often I would bring my ukulele or guitar to school
10:47Just so I like, could just like vibe with friends after school
10:58I would bring my ukulele or guitar to school
11:03Often I would bring my ukulele or guitar to school just so I could just like vibe with
11:10friends after school.
11:15I started doing like music choir like starting high school.
11:22I really wish that we could perform, but I don't think we are, unfortunately.
11:30It would have been nice.
12:00When we look at college admissions, we have to ask the question, are we representing
12:11the population of the United States?
12:13And if that answer is no, that's when we have to start questioning our practices.
12:20Deer Valley is a very diverse population.
12:26We're made up of mostly Black, Latinx students, Southeast Asian students, Pacific Islander
12:30students, white students.
12:31It's a very, very diverse group, but our teachers are almost all white.
12:37In the United States, African-Americans represent 16% of the school population.
12:47But we only represent 7% of the teachers.
12:50And of that 7%, less than 2% are African-American males.
12:56Now, let's look at the demographic.
12:58Who's doing the worst?
13:00African-American males.
13:03Whenever I gave a presentation, I talked to a Black male and I said, you know, what are
13:12your plans?
13:13What do you think about college?
13:14Is this something that you want to do?
13:15Is this something that you've given up on already because you shouldn't, right?
13:18There are schools out there that are for you.
13:20The more they see administrators look like them, the more they now start to see the possibilities
13:25of what can happen.
13:26Cam himself, being an African-American, former Deer Valley graduate, has the appeal to our
13:31young people.
13:32They get to see the person that sat in their seat four or five years ago and tell them,
13:39you know, you can do this or you can do whatever else you want to do.
13:44Let's talk about colleges for a sec, because do you know what kind of schools you want to
13:55apply to?
13:56CSUs.
13:57Okay.
13:58I'm going to be honest with you.
14:02If you do want to go straight into a university next year, HBCUs are probably going to be your
14:08best bet.
14:11I mean, I know you went to the HBCU fair last year.
14:14How did you feel about the schools that you talked to?
14:17I feel good about them.
14:18I just, I don't know if I want to leave California.
14:20Maybe I could do, like, I don't know.
14:22You still need to do the FAFSA.
14:24The thing I always tell students is you still need to apply to scholarships too.
14:28It looks like you are able to kind of go to most of your classes, but it also kind of looks
14:35like you're missing some.
14:37Okay.
14:38Or, like, not engaged is what they're putting in on the attendance.
14:41It's probably, I'll be in the classes, but I do be just, I'll be on mute.
14:46I'm only 17, but, like, everybody look to me for, like, stuff.
14:51I don't know why.
14:55Basically, who I live with right now is my grandma, my stepdad, my mom, and my little
15:01sister.
15:02Oh, and my, I got a cat.
15:05So, yeah.
15:06She part of the family too.
15:07Gotta mention her name.
15:08Yeah.
15:09And two chickens too.
15:10Yeah.
15:11Don't forget the chickens.
15:16My brother had a kid.
15:18So, he's young himself.
15:21So, he would just dump the kid to me and leave.
15:24And he would be like, I'm going to be back in two hours, but he'd come back in like eight.
15:29Yeah.
15:30So, I would have to babysit.
15:31Basically, I'm, like, on my computer, like, walking around, kid, computer, like this,
15:39like a, like a mom.
15:40And I'm just like, and then my grandma called me, I gotta put this down, put the kid down,
15:44make sure he don't fall off or something, and then go help her, run back.
15:48Whatever she need, I do it for her.
15:50If she need me to drive her somewhere, I drive her somewhere, walk around or something.
15:54If she's not feeling good, I help her with that.
15:59Whatever she need, I help her.
16:00Always.
16:01I just have to.
16:04Right when COVID started, my mom, like February, she got hurt on the job.
16:08They released her.
16:09She had surgery on both her elbows.
16:10She couldn't really, like, do anything for, like, a couple months.
16:13So, I had to help my mom with that.
16:16And then, I had to help with the kid.
16:19I don't like cleaning, though.
16:21I can't, I hate cleaning dishes, but I always have to do it.
16:27I'm not mad at it.
16:29It's not doing nothing but helping me.
16:31Later on in life, I'll, it's going to come, it's going to come natural and easily to me,
16:34because I've already been doing it for years.
16:44You want to hoop?
16:45Yeah.
16:46Okay.
16:47And, you know, sports, the sports world is tough, especially when you're going to transfer
16:51JUCO, right?
16:52So, if you have that option available, that's going to be great.
16:54But if not, I definitely want you to be able to know exactly what you need to do.
16:59When's your next tournament?
17:0116th.
17:02Arizona.
17:04Arizona.
17:05Are you nice like that?
17:07Yeah.
17:08Yeah?
17:09I hope we get a chance to, uh...
17:11I think we're having a season this year.
17:13I hope so, because I want to check you out.
17:15Um, make sure you stay on them grades, though, because I don't want nothing happening to where
17:18you get an F and then, you know, you're not graduating.
17:21So...
17:22Okay.
17:23I know Ahmad was doing AAU, which is basically travel basketball.
17:29That is a big motivator for him getting to college.
17:33I think he really does think that he can be a good academic student in college and get
17:39a real degree.
17:40Like, I don't think that it's, like, MBA dreams robust for him, which is something that I'm
17:44really happy about, because, um, a lot of students are that way, and then, you know,
17:48if it doesn't work out, then it's, you know, whatever.
18:03The big news is my license.
18:06Since Middle School in High School, I've been taking the bus.
18:09Now it's, like, when I need to do something, I can just go.
18:12It's a different experience.
18:15It was my dad's car, and he gave it to me.
18:17It's been 11 days since I've had it.
18:19And it's been the best 11 days of my life.
18:22So I feel like I'm blessed to be able to have it, because a lot of people don't have it.
18:27I've been going to Felicia for a whole year.
18:29I just love when I come here.
18:30I feel, it feels good.
18:32Especially, it really feels good coming here and worship.
18:38God is a big part of my life, and I feel that I wouldn't be where I am right now without God.
18:43Hello, how are you?
18:49Freshman year, I was not really involved at all.
18:51All I did with my life was going to school and then going home.
18:56My junior year, I mainly got out there and I just did it.
18:59A lot more things.
19:00That's when I started working.
19:02I've done track, BSU, leadership.
19:04He participates in a lot of different clubs and organizations.
19:08I know he's passionate about making opportunity for himself and being able to put himself in the best position to succeed.
19:17I know I definitely want to get a business degree.
19:20I definitely want to run a business.
19:22Yeah.
19:23Transmitter.
19:24Damn spitter.
19:25Plans bigger.
19:26No glamour glitter.
19:27Few things to consider.
19:28The Den.
19:29It was a student store where you can get like Deer Valley gear and everything like t-shirts and sweaters.
19:35I was basically in training to run it my senior year.
19:38I would have been a CFO, so like chief financial officer.
19:41Forever learning to test life.
19:43Don't you stress life.
19:44Live a blessed life, not a press life.
19:47See who she is in a dress life.
19:49Live your best life, yeah.
19:51I really, really liked going to school.
19:53Like I love to like get up and throw on a nice outfit and go to school and just to go see my friends and my classmates, make new friends.
20:01Everything has just changed.
20:03Everything, literally the whole world is like turned upside down.
20:06And it's different.
20:11Javonte.
20:14Can you hear me now?
20:15I can hear you now.
20:16Okay.
20:18I feel like you're breaking quarantine way too much.
20:20Like you have a fresh cut every time I see you.
20:24No, it's fine.
20:26How you doing?
20:27I'm good.
20:28You good?
20:29I've been really busy with like school and work and tiring.
20:33All right, so where are we at?
20:34What have you worked on?
20:35Please tell me you've expanded on those PIQs.
20:38Not at all.
20:40Have you done anything college application related since the last time we talked?
20:43With my common app, I'm about halfway done.
20:45So that stuff is almost done.
20:47When is the first school in your common application due?
20:49It will be not until I think January.
20:53When are the UC applications due?
20:56The 30th.
20:57The 30th.
20:58Okay.
20:59What should we be prioritizing?
21:02The UC applications.
21:04But we got 12 days until the 30th.
21:06Okay?
21:07I need you to work on this.
21:09Mm-hmm.
21:10Mm-hmm.
21:11You want to look at the last one?
21:14Something that I am forever proud of is my devotion to the Black Lives Matter movement.
21:18Since freshman year, I've been in my school as a Black Student Union.
21:22Tell me why this has been important to you, right?
21:26Why did you become the vice president?
21:28Why is, like, the Black Student Union something that's, like, important to you and something that you felt the need to be a part of?
21:34Yeah, I really like this one and this.
21:38Do you feel like there's another question that you can answer that would be strong?
21:44What's the biggest challenge you've ever faced?
21:46Me being myself.
21:50Ever since I've grown up, obviously, I've, like, been bullied about, like, my sexuality.
21:56So I feel like that's something that I've had to, like, grow into and then be able to embrace, I guess.
22:03You think that's worth talking about?
22:06You think that's something you can talk about?
22:08Yeah.
22:10It was such a phase.
22:12Just, like, going to sixth grade of just in denial, seventh grade, I'm like, oh, maybe I'm bisexual.
22:19And then eighth grade, I'm like, no.
22:21And you know who you are, you're gay.
22:23And then it was just, like, ninth and tenth grade is just that time of, like, knowing, but then not wanting other people to know.
22:31It's just hard because I feel like any kid that just, like, is struggling with just being accepted for just who they are in general.
22:44It's just a process.
22:45It just takes a lot because it's just, like, hiding it from, like, family and then hiding it from, like, friends at school.
22:55It's just, like, it's like, who do you have?
22:58Give it a shot.
22:59We'll see how it comes out.
23:01Again, that's your reality, right?
23:02That's your world.
23:03That's what we want to see.
23:05All right.
23:06I think writing about yourself is probably one of the—it's so hard.
23:18Like, I tell them the same thing.
23:19Like, I tell them I struggle.
23:25I'm applying to UCLA, UC Riverside, and the next two are Stanford and Penn State.
23:31I literally sit here all day and tell students how to write and how to relax and how to just let it flow and how to just tell their story.
23:40And then I turn around and I literally have the exact same anxiety they do about writing my own stuff.
23:47I'm trying not to be too anxious about it and just take it day by day.
24:02You're muted.
24:06Hello?
24:07Can you hear me?
24:08This meeting is being recorded.
24:09Yeah, I can hear you.
24:10Cool. How are you? It's been a while.
24:12Yeah, I'm doing fine.
24:14Yeah? How was the last quarter for you?
24:17Could have went better. My, uh, my math was, like, a C, and then everything else was fine, like, A's. But then, yeah, it was just math.
24:25What math is that?
24:26Um, pre-calculus.
24:27It's hard for me to retain information with distant learning. And I'm working on my college application, my UC application, right now.
24:36Okay.
24:38I am hoping to attend UC Berkeley or UCLA. I want to get into, like, a UC mainly. I know, like, the acceptance rate is, like, really low and then, like, the standards are high.
24:48And also, um, I really like the area of UC Berkeley, UCLA. Especially UC Berkeley, where, like, there's a lot of boba shops in UC Berkeley.
24:57Yeah. So, I'm on the, um, PIQs and, like, thinking about which ones to do. Because, like, I'm trying to find something really substantial.
25:07First off, how are you feeling about writing this kind of stuff?
25:10Like, I've never really written about myself.
25:13So, it's kind of scary, I guess.
25:15Tell me the ones you've decided on.
25:16So, the questions I chose was, describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge.
25:23And how has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
25:26And then, I'm still thinking about some, um, the other ones.
25:29Okay. Um, what are you thinking about writing for that number five question? The most significant challenge?
25:35I want to say, um, my father was, like, an alcoholic.
25:41And then, that forced me and my mom to, like, move into, like, move with family, like, seven or eight times.
25:48So, like, I never had, like, a stable, like, um, living situation.
25:53As well as, like, money was very hard to come, like, my mom had to support me, my sister, and my auntie for a little bit.
26:02So, then, you know, just like a financial challenge and just like a familiar, familial challenge.
26:08That's what I was, that's what I'm writing about.
26:09Definitely.
26:11My dad lives in the trailer next to me.
26:17This is my dad's trailer.
26:21Our dad has his own thing going on.
26:24You know, we have a lot of addiction problems in our family.
26:27So, when, uh, my dad kind of gave me the reins, I was, like, 19, had my first baby.
26:33Age was probably six, seven years old.
26:35I try to be as much of a father figure as I can to him, you know, because, you know, a lot of times he didn't have it.
26:42So, if I can give that experience to him, then, you know, that's great.
26:45But I know sometimes he's, like, you know, he wants me to just be his brother, but, you know what I mean?
26:51Like, these leaves not gonna rake themselves.
26:53My brother always said, all this stuff that happened to us, use it to empower you instead of bringing you down.
27:02I don't know much, like...
27:03My dad, he always tried to teach me how to, like, play music or, like, teach me stuff.
27:13He gave me my love for oldies, too, so then I really appreciate him for that.
27:16My sister's debut, her 18th debut.
27:23This picture isn't from the actual event.
27:26It was, like, the practice, because my dad couldn't attend the real one because, uh, he was in rehab.
27:34Every weekend, me and my brother would go down, visit him, give him some food, snacks, whatever he wanted.
27:42I have a video of him visiting my dad at rehab, different rehab.
27:47Um, he had a guitar that his friend gave him.
27:51So then I brought my ukulele, because I think he told me to.
27:55So then, he doesn't know how to play guitar.
27:57But then I was just kind of, like, playing with him, and then he was kind of, he was trying to play.
28:00I think he was trying to copy my fingers.
28:01And, yeah, it's a little cute moment.
28:13That's heavy, you know?
28:15Yeah, yeah.
28:16So, I mean, at the end of the day, we are doing writing, but at the end of the day, this is still your real life, right?
28:21So take your time with it, process it.
28:23That's kind of the tough part about these PIQs, right?
28:25It's, like, it's a lot of reflection.
28:28And then what about your creative one?
28:29What about your creative one? What are you thinking about for that one?
28:32Um, I am, like, I really love music. Like, I'm trying to make my own music.
28:36And, like, that's, like, really helped me, like, cope with a lot of things.
28:41And, like, really, like, it helps me express, like, how I'm feeling.
28:45I really like that. I really like that. Have you started these at all?
28:48There's some, like, I'm kind of stuck on, like, how to end it.
28:51I'm not really sure, like, how to do that.
28:54Right, right, right. But just know that, like, if you do have questions, or you do feel like you get stuck, or whatever the case may be, um, I'm here for you. Alright?
29:00Yeah, okay. Yeah, thank you.
29:02My first tiny edit, um, in the first paragraph, the first little, where you say transformational resistance, describe my experience long before I ever understood it, right?
29:25Yeah. Her name is Denise Pacheco. I actually have never met her in real life.
29:31She graduated from the urban schooling program at UCLA.
29:34She's just been super empowering and, like, we have talked about, kind of, the research and my work and, like, those kinds of things.
29:40But I think at the end of the day, she's been, like, more so just helping me, like, stay confident.
29:45You're giving it here. You're giving the concrete examples here. Yeah?
29:49Yeah. Cool.
29:50Oh, you know, I, I'm, I keep getting into this place of, like, really being, um, just like, am I gonna get in? Am I gonna get in? Am I gonna get in?
30:03Now's the time to start telling yourself what you would tell your students, which is waiting and being open to what comes next.
30:10Now's the time to just trust yourself and let go.
30:13Ah, you're right. You're very right. You're very right.
30:16I think the UC applications are probably the worst. Mr. Cam put so much emphasis on those, like, it was just very stressful.
30:40I am still working on my PIQs for the personal inside questions.
30:49I texted Emily, hey, I just wanted to check in with you and see how college ops were going. Haven't heard anything back.
30:54I don't know why it's legit. I don't know if it's the site or if it's my thing. No, it's just, like, not loading.
31:12Yeah, it says, remember to submit your application by 11.59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time on November 30th.
31:24I think it's the site, because I don't think it's the Wi-Fi. See, it loads it here, and then it's when I'm trying to sign in, because it looks like glitching.
31:32That's so annoying.
31:40What are you doing?
31:42I was trying to work on my UC application, but the site was down.
31:45It says, like, the system was temporary offline. Please check back later. We apologize for the inconvenience.
31:50When is the applications due?
31:52They're due tomorrow, which is November 30th.
31:55At what time?
31:5711.59 p.m.
31:58Well, how do you feel if they open the school back, say, the end of January? Are you ready to go to school?
32:06I want to go to school, but do I want to go to school? No.
32:09Because of the coronavirus, I don't think it's time for people to go to school.
32:12But I think if they set up the classroom kind of the proper rate, with the limited number of people in there, you know, six feet apart,
32:19it's just like going inside the church building, sitting there in church. It's kind of the similar thing, you know?
32:24I guess that'd be fine. Just it would feel weird. I'd rather just be at home.
32:29I mean, yes, I understand that. If you don't feel comfortable, yeah.
32:33With everything going on, the coronavirus, who knows if it'll still be here in a year from now.
32:38And it's like, why a year from now would I want to, like, say if I was to get into, like, one of the UCs?
32:43But, like, I can't even actually go there. Everything's online. That's just, like, just a waste of money.
32:47And then it's just like, I'm not really living the experience there where, like, you're just like, you wanted me to go straight to UC.
32:54Wherever you decide to go, that's fine with me, as long as you decide to go there.
32:58I don't want you just to go somewhere I want you to go because that's not going to make you happy
33:02and you're not going to probably be successful because you don't want to be there.
33:05I don't have a problem with you going to community college as long as you're going to college.
33:08Today is November 30th. It was supposed to be the day that UC applications were due, but because there was some technical difficulties with the application yesterday, they extended the deadline.
33:30Oh, and there's Ebi.
33:40Hello.
33:42Hello.
33:44Hey.
33:46How you doing?
33:48Can y'all actually do me a favor? I actually want to say something to the two of you.
33:52I really need your help with your friend Cadence.
33:55I feel like she's kind of, like, stressed out about this whole thing.
33:59So I need y'all to help me help her. Okay? Please.
34:04Like, she's just, like, not writing a whole lot. And, um, I'm trying, but I need you to help me. Please.
34:12I'll talk to her later.
34:14Thank you. Thank you, Ebi.
34:16I mean, I talk to Cadence, like, every day. So, I mean, I, like, I know, know, like, what goes on with her.
34:20Cadence, are you asleep? Yeah. No. You sure? Yeah, I'm sure. Have you submitted yet? No. I really don't plan it. I really don't.
34:42No. I really don't plan it.
34:46I really don't.
34:49Why?
34:51Did you, did you see Javante's, wait, do you have Javante on Snapchat?
34:55Yeah.
34:56Did you see the story?
34:58No, let me go watch.
34:59Go watch it.
35:01The deadline for the UC application has been extended to 11.59 PST Friday, December 4th.
35:07I seen that it was extended. I was like, wow, look at God. Because he knew I wasn't going to have it done by today.
35:13It's stressful. And the whole application part is fine. It's just the essays. That's where it takes the most of your time and your energy. You're just like, oh, my goodness. Because you're just stuck. You don't know what to write about. You're just in a blank spot. And nothing, nothing is coming to mind.
35:34What about Howard? Have you finished your Howard application?
35:36Like, you know, good and darn well. I have not.
35:39Have you?
35:41The way Mr. Kim tore apart my PIQs yesterday, have you embarrassed?
35:46I was like, wow.
35:48I was like, dude, how are you? I was like, I didn't even think you could edit such a small amount of words.
35:54But at least you got it done, though. It's a miniature.
35:58I need to get on track with you.
36:01And finally put such and get my stuff together.
36:05Literally, but...
36:08Hey!
36:10Hey!
36:12Yeah.
36:14It's just crazy.
36:15Oh, my gosh.
36:16It's just crazy.
36:18Hey!
36:19Is this the order?
36:22I don't really know.
36:24Yeah.
36:25Oh, that's the order.
36:26Mm-hmm.
36:27But that's the top thing.
36:28I'm standing up.
36:29One, two, one, two, one.
36:36I know you don't have to turn this, Chris.
36:39I'ma say you...
36:40I'll see you a star.
36:42Or anger.
36:43Yeah.
36:44Let's turn it around.
36:46I remember one day, the tooth fairy
36:48gave me 20 bucks for my tooth.
36:50Chris said the tooth fairy's face.
36:53Can you hear the tooth fairy's face?
36:55No.
36:56You think Santa real?
36:57Yes.
36:58Exactly.
37:00Exactly.
37:12Hey, Brennan.
37:14How's everything going with LSU and classes?
37:17It's going well.
37:18I don't think they still am.
37:21It's just online.
37:22But hopefully next semester, probably next school year,
37:26everything dies down and I can actually
37:30experience the college, the actual college life.
37:34Yeah, what are your plans as far as college?
37:36Like, what college do you want to attend?
37:39Well, you know me.
37:41I'm trying to go to Howard University or whatever.
37:44You know, a lot of people in our family didn't even finish high school.
37:48So it's like, with us finishing high school, that's a big thing.
37:52That's very big.
37:52And then we're going straight to college right after.
37:54So it's like everybody going to start following our footsteps.
37:56Everybody under is going to start following our footsteps.
37:59So the way I see it, if campuses and stuff aren't going to be opened up again in the fall,
38:06I'll go to Life of Community for like about two years if they're not going to be opened up.
38:11It's a whole new journey.
38:12Yeah.
38:13You know, talk to people who previously was in college that's studying the same thing that you were studying and,
38:19you know, get that extra support.
38:21So it's like, what I call it, connects, get connects.
38:24That can just, you know, just keep you pushing, especially starting it early, like at the age you started at.
38:29But yeah, I understand what you're saying, you know, giving me some insight.
38:34Yeah.
38:35It's a lot of work though, I can tell you that.
38:38It's a lot of work that you're going to be having to do.
38:40I know.
38:41A lot of work, Brandon.
38:42Literally.
38:43Literally.
38:44A lot of work.
38:45Yeah.
38:46But hey, it's life.
38:48I got through it, so you can do it too.
38:50Uh-huh.
38:52Uh-huh.
38:59Right now we're in my childhood neighborhood where I grew up.
39:13I haven't been back here in years since I moved away, which was like fourth grade.
39:20But when I first moved to Antioch, this is the neighborhood I moved into.
39:25And my cousins and my granny, they stayed around the corner from me and my mom.
39:31My mom was diagnosed with lupus when she was 13, which is like an autoimmune disease.
39:38And it just attacks your immune system and everything.
39:44The day she passed, that's like one memory that I just have.
39:48It's just stuck with me.
39:50And I remember I wanted to ask her to get some chips.
39:53And like I came in her room and she was just like, you know, not there.
39:59And then I remember like putting my ear down on her heart.
40:05You know, it was a scary moment to see that.
40:09And then I remember my granny, she like pulled me up in the room.
40:14She's like, like, you know, she didn't make it.
40:16And I'm just like, I'm crying because it was sad.
40:20And it was just like, wow, you know.
40:23But then I didn't understand at the time, like what had happened all the way.
40:30And for the longest, even still now, I always felt that, not that it was my fault, but that if I would have tried calling 911 at the time, that she would be here.
40:48But yeah, so that was sad, you know, that was something, but I just kind of put it away, not think about it too much.
41:07I know that whatever I do, whatever I choose to be, that she will be proud of me.
41:17Let's go.
41:20Let's go.
41:29Work all day till my feet get sore.
41:32Keep on working till the whistle blow.
41:35Oh, when the nighttime come.
41:38It's on when the nighttime come.
41:41Wear this mask on my face all day, smiling like I'm never knowing what you say.
41:46All over till the night time come
41:49This is the song when the night time come
41:52The thing really over, it has just begun
41:55We gonna be alright when the night time come
41:58Tired of trying to figure what I might become
42:01I just wanna sing my song when the night time come
42:04Hey!
42:08Hey!
42:11Ready to be done with this?
42:12Okay, so I think that this is amazing
42:17This is amazing
42:19What I just said was amazing
42:21Would you like to read it?
42:24Do you wanna read it?
42:26I would love to read it
42:27This is the
42:30What is this? Additional comments
42:32Okay, so you can read it if you like
42:35There it is or whatever, you know
42:37You know
42:38That's good
42:40Woohoo! Amazing
42:42You're about to cross the finish line right now
42:45I'm proud of you
42:46Yeah, maybe you wanna submit?
42:48Submit
42:48Wait, so if I submit it
42:51It's gonna like really submit it like real for real?
42:55This is the sign I shouldn't have pressed the button
42:57Take a heck of a minute
42:59Oh my gosh!
43:01Don't press nothing, don't press nothing
43:02I think that was it
43:03Wow!
43:05Wow!
43:06Good job!
43:07Good job!
43:08I am very excited about that
43:17And there was a lot of times where you were talking about not getting through that
43:21I just need to remember this feeling
43:24That huge smile that you have on right now
43:26Like I need you to remember that, okay?
43:28Because this will not be the last time that you hit a wall where you just feel like this shit is not gonna get done
43:34Right?
43:36So remember this feeling
43:38Because when you go through the adversity
43:40It feels even better
43:42I already know
43:43Right?
43:45You got it
43:46You can do all things
43:47Thank you
43:48Because
43:49You're welcome
43:49You know, if you weren't here to help
43:51It wouldn't have got done
43:52So
43:52I thank you for that
43:54It got done
43:55You're welcome
43:56I'm proud of you
43:57I'm proud of you

44:03I'm proud of you
44:04I'm proud of you
44:05I'm proud of you

44:12I'm proud of you
44:13I'm proud of you
44:14I'm proud of you
44:15I'm proud of you
44:16I'm proud of you
44:17I'm proud of you
44:18I'm proud of you
44:19I'm proud of you
44:20I'm proud of you
44:21I'm proud of you
44:22I'm proud of you
44:23I'm proud of you
44:24I'm proud of you
44:25I'm proud of you
44:26my plan is to kind of put you all in some breakout rooms with some sophomores and juniors
44:45we're gonna have the seniors kind of give some advice on what they have been feeling about like
44:52this college application process I will be popping in and out so I'll see y'all soon
44:57I'm excited let's see what's going on
45:03I'm applying to Howard still like we don't really know what to expect for the next year
45:11I mean I'm kind of just trying to be optimistic about it and I don't know I'm kind of excited
45:17kind of nervous because like you know we're getting like thrown into the world at this point
45:22make sure that you're doing well mentally just don't let grades define you just make sure you're
45:27in a good mental space um I don't know if y'all really into like Bible verses and quotes
45:32I don't know that but fake about work is dead and that's James 2.6 so yeah you gotta work for
45:40everything pretty much Cadence is hilarious so Cadence just told them a quote and that's
45:47the quote that I gave her because she she was like Mr. Cam I'm gonna just put this on God and I said
45:56faith without work is dedicated it's like you have to put the work in too welcome back that was so good
46:04like my 12th graders are ready to be college advisors like I was ready to cry like I was so proud of y'all
46:10I was hella tired I'm running on four hours of sleep because I just finished my last PhD application last
46:15night um so I went to sleep at like 4 a.m thank you um on that note 2020 is almost over but I wanted
46:24to see how y'all are feeling with everything right now
46:282020 every month just topped each other it's been a wild year very wild year the coronavirus
46:40outbreak declared a global pandemic the death toll has hit a grim new milestone this is a highly
46:47transmissible virus the reality of prolonged school shutdowns as a precautionary measure could
46:53be crippling school is setting me out because I would love for it to be better like before at school
47:00many of the students I serve like myself did not have the social and navigational capital to inform
47:07their college-going journey I have seen how the critical consciousness they have built over time
47:11has been used as motivation to push through barriers to higher education and fight for social justice
47:19I remember the tears that fell as we were reminded of the black women and men that were
47:23killed at the hands of state violence don't shoot hands up don't shoot
47:27I didn't just wake up one day and be a leader but as I've gotten older I've learned to think before
47:32I'm going to go back to school and work I always step up when I'm needed
47:41all right y'all I want y'all to answer a question in chat for me the universe needs to give me blank in 2021
47:48my biggest hope isn't for myself but for the world for us to be able to like move past this universe
47:54needs to give me acceptance letters in 2021 universe owes me a real traditional graduation
48:00I know a lot of y'all felt that one I think students are feeling how I'm feeling like
48:05they're tired the universe needs to give me more confidence in 2021 the universe needs to give me
48:10peace in 2021 it's a time of relief it's a time of anxiety a lot of students are kind of in this place
48:18of reflection how does a person express themselves freely creativity everyone has a creative side and
48:25expresses it differently music is a wonderful thing it has the power to bring everyone together
48:31regardless of one's backgrounds or individual quirks this aspect of music intrigued me so much that
48:35I'm willing to spend the rest of my life dedicated to it everything that we go through every lesson every
48:41battle every challenge that's going to be a part of your life that hopefully is is influential
48:46anybody have any closing statements they want to say and thank you mr cam for
48:56y'all gonna make me cry i appreciate y'all have a great break that that meeting was great like
49:02that was probably that was probably my favorite meeting that i've ever had
49:16my mom dropped me off to my coach's house in the morning so he can take me all the way here and it
49:39took like an hour and 30 minutes i won't quit ahmad dante they've been with me since 9 30 this morning
49:45and they don't play the 6 30. so it shows the dedication that these kids have to wanting to
49:49hang around this long just to play a game because they haven't got a chance to play anywhere else
49:55i had the opportunity to play in college so i want to give these kids the same opportunity that
50:11i had and that's why we probably pushed the kids so hard why are we not attacking the open side
50:17motion motion
50:24what happened because of the coronavirus coaches can't really come out to too many events so at
50:30these exposure events college coaches get to tune in to these games which is live streams and they can
