Rome, AD 3–5. Gaius has died and Tiberius has been banished to Rhodes for his mistreatment of Julia, who in his absence has a series of hedonistic affairs and orgies. One day in the garden, the young Claudius catches a wolf cub dropped from an eagle's claws, leading a seer to predict that he will protect Rome in an hour of need. Livia's scheming continues: knowing of the mutual attraction between Claudius's sister Livilla and Julia's son Postumus Agrippa, she arranges their betrothal to other people; she enlists Lucius's friend Plautius as a spy against Julia, and tricks Lucius into revealing Julia's infidelities. A grief-stricken Augustus banishes her from Rome. The death of Lucius in a boating accident (implied to be caused by Plautius on Livia's orders) ends Tiberius's exile, and he returns to Rome to be named, along with Julia's surviving son Postumus, as co-heir to Augustus' throne.

01:11none at all yeah they just shabby anywhere I mean what do they care yes
01:16just another piece of paper to them I'm sure I had it yesterday well yes he wrote him a letter
01:29after Gaius died what is it the answer I'm afraid is no yes
01:46idea Tiberius the answer I'm afraid no this is the one yes yes yes this is it yes idea Tiberius
01:56the answer I'm afraid is no which is what I expected Augustus refuses to allow you to return
02:03to Rome refuses even to discuss it despite the sudden and unexplained death of his beloved Gaius
02:10and despite my pleading with him he is adamant that you will stay where you are he has of course
02:17never forgiven you for what you did to Julia and frankly I'm not surprised
02:21well oh it's very promising excellency very promising indeed you've been saying that for years
02:34perhaps if you find some disasters there my life might take a turn for the better but it has excellency
02:39the planets are in a most favorable conjunction for instance I'm sure that the letter I brought
02:45you from Rome contained good news am I not right you might have known that from my mother when she
02:51gave it to excellency your mother is not the most scrutable of women one may read her letters but
02:58never her face I'd stake my life there was some good news in that letter come my calculations prove it
03:05I'm to stay here and rot if it has anything to do with Augustus but there's more I'm sure there must be more
03:13well she promises now to work for my return excellent I knew it it's all here the chart doesn't lie
03:23but it counts as patience too nothing will happen overnight what else did you learn in Rome
03:32Augustus has taken the death of Gaius very hard is there any more news about how he died no it's very
03:39mysterious unfortunately the body was burned before an autopsy was ordered when you die in the east they
03:45don't keep you hanging about long I shan't said any tears for him what else did you learn that Augustus
03:55intends to appoint your other step-son to command the armies in Spain Lucius he couldn't fight his way
04:03out of a harem what else only that your wife's behavior is a scandal known to all except her father suppose
04:14you finish that horoscope of course excellency
04:23is there anything to drink my mouth is quite dry it's such a long climb up this hill it'll be a lot
04:32shorter on the way down if you don't find something to my liking in that chart of yours
04:35why do they all hate me so what have I done to them you could stay a few more days what's the hurry
04:48oh no hurry really Rome is like a sewer in the summer I wasn't going back to Rome I was thinking of
04:55taking the children down to the house in Austria you what for the sea is the sea one wave is like
05:00another you might as well stay here I thought perhaps you might like to be on your own for a
05:06while when have I ever wanted to be on my own well that's what I meant really oh no you don't put me
05:14out I have to behave myself when the children are around well up to a point always sewing or weaving or
05:23doing something why don't let the slaves do it for you they never do things properly no that's quite
05:28true they don't want to work they eat you out of house and home then they can't get up in the morning
05:33it's not easy to buy good slaves anymore you need to be a very good judge of character and you pick
05:37your own yes of course have you I used to when I lived with Tiberius but one of those things I
05:43thought I ought to do you know me I was all right with the girls when it came to the male slaves I used to
05:50pick all the good-looking ones and then I ended up doing the work myself oh Jupiter how could you
05:55well living with Tiberius was not the fulfilling experience I'd expected I was seldom filled and
06:02never full what is it look what he did look what he did who did Germanicus he threw sand all over me
06:11so my face and my hair it's everywhere Germanicus how could you I was only teasing she threw it in
06:19mine oh come on Pina I'm sorry you did it on purpose I'll never speak to you again now come here
06:29let me wipe it off and stop being so dramatic Germanicus you mustn't be so rough I I'm sorry
06:39she's perfectly all right there how's Claudius he's all right he's looking for shells well make
06:48sure the slaves keep an eye on him and don't leave him out of the games we won't oh come on Pina I'm
06:53sorry and don't be too long down there it's time you came in out of the sun they'll be getting married
07:04soon
07:04what worries me is who's going to marry Claudius with his foot with his stammer
07:13this is always somebody
07:16to tell you the truth Julia I find it very hard to be affectionate to him
07:20I suppose really I ought to love him more because of his afflictions but
07:25I don't I think he's sweet you're not his mother not easy living with a child who's so stupid
07:32everything you tell him you have to repeat half a dozen times
07:36what Drusus would have made of him I don't know
07:40ah Drusus you had something wonderful there my dear
07:44tell me did you never wonder about his death
07:49I mean did it never strike you as odd that it happened when Livia's personal physician was looking after him
07:56you said something like that to me once before
07:58I said that I thought that Livia had a hand in it and I still think so and I know Tiberius thought so
08:05I can't believe that
08:06people say that Tiberius didn't mind being banished because he was glad to get away from me
08:12but that wasn't all of it
08:13I think he was pleased to get away from his mother
08:16she used to invite him to dinner too often
08:20Julia don't joke
08:22I'm not
08:23I've seen his face often enough when she's poured wine for him
08:27I tell you I don't dine there happily myself
08:30you upset me you really have
08:36it's a terrible thing to accuse someone of poisoning without proof
08:40she accuses me of all sorts of things without proof
08:43make sure she doesn't get any then
08:47are you leaving Lusis?
08:49yes mother

21:20I've been talking about
21:21you know there's not
21:22enough of it
21:23which is why the family
21:25should set a good
21:26example
21:26now you remember
21:28now you remember how early
21:29Gaius and Lucis
21:30were betrothed
21:31and Tiberius too
21:33on the subject of Tiberius
21:36Lydia leave me alone
21:37on the subject of Tiberius
21:38my dear
21:39what harm would it do
21:41if he came back to Rome
21:42as a private citizen
21:44listen
21:44I know you're your son
21:45I understand your feelings
21:46they're natural in a mother
21:47but we've had this out
21:49before and so many times
21:50after what he did to Julia
21:52I shall never forgive him
21:53perhaps the fault was not
21:55all on one side
21:56perhaps he was provoked
21:58no
21:58I can't accept that
22:00I know what you're going to say
22:01I'm her father
22:02she can do no wrong
22:03but be fair
22:04if she's done wrong
22:05let someone prove it
22:06black and white as they say
22:07chapter and verse
22:08and not sly
22:10backstairs gossip
22:11let's not talk about it again
22:12on that subject
22:13my mind is closed
22:14now
22:15on the subject of marriage
22:16but what do you suggest
22:18Agrippino and Germanicus
22:20that's office
22:20yes
22:21we should arrange
22:22the betrothal ceremony
22:23as soon as possible
22:24and
22:26cast her in the villa
22:27too
22:28cast her in the villa
22:29are you sure
22:30I thought posthumous
22:31oh he's a little monster
22:33besides the villa
22:34can't stand him
22:34oh if you say so
22:36she's a bit of a flirt
22:37I mean she teases him a lot
22:39well that's natural in a girl
22:40yes I suppose
22:42oh what about Claudius
22:43who's going to marry Claudius
22:44I'll find someone
22:47it won't be easy
22:49but I'll find someone
22:51most women marry fools
22:54but it takes them a while
22:55to find out
22:56unfortunately with Claudius
22:57it's as plain as a nose
22:58on his face
23:14why didn't you save me from this beast
23:30why didn't you save me from this beast
23:35yes
24:58Am I a big eater?

25:07Hello, dear.
25:09Who's that you've got there?
25:11His name's Herod.
25:13His grandfather is king of the Jews.
25:18Really?
25:19What's he doing here?
25:21He's been sent to be educated in Rome and he's been put in my class.
25:25How nice.
25:26He's a handsome lad, isn't he?
25:29Thank you, lady.
25:30Do I have the honor of addressing the former wife, the great Agrippa?
25:34Oh, yes, dear, you do.
25:37My name is Herod Agrippa.
25:40I was named after your illustrious husband, Marcus Agrippa.
25:45Really?
25:46Well, wasn't that nice of your father to do that?
25:49No.
25:50It was my grandfather who did that.
25:53Well, it was nice of him, then.
25:56He's not very nice, lady.
25:58He had my father executed soon after I was born.
26:02Oh, dear.
26:04I am sorry.
26:06Yes, so was my father.
26:08This is my mother.
26:11The great lady Antonia, daughter of Mark Antony and wife of the noble Drusus.
26:17My!
26:19You do know a lot about us.
26:21I have studied you all.
26:23You are all known throughout the world.
26:25You are very famous.
26:27Well, you may come and visit us whenever you like.
26:31Have you introduced him to Germanicus and Livilla yet?
26:34Not yet.
26:38Come on.
26:40Thank you for receiving a mere provincial so generously.
26:46What a polite boy.
26:50And how well he speaks Latin.
26:52Julia, not another fig.
26:55Figs are good for you.
26:57They sound just like Lucius.
27:00I suppose you'll miss him when he goes to Spain.
27:03Hmm.
27:04I shall miss that good-looking friend of his even more.
27:08What a collection.
27:11It certainly doesn't lack variety, does it?
27:16I hope these names will stand up to examination.
27:19Well, there's nothing there that can't be verified.
27:22Who, for example, is Gershon?
27:26One of the house slaves from Africa.
27:31Scandalous.
27:33Are there any other slaves on this list?
27:36One or two.
27:37But the rest are mainly Romans of good birth and family.
27:41Not quite good enough, it appears.
27:48You've done well.
27:52You've no qualms about betraying your friend's mother.
27:57In matters of state, I...
27:59Oh, you do learn fast, don't you?
28:03And what about your friend as distinct from his mother?
28:10You are ambitious.
28:12When you tell Caesar Augustus about...
28:16Oh!
28:17I shan't tell him.
28:19He wouldn't appreciate it coming from me.
28:21You see, he would question in his mind my motives.
28:25No, no, no.
28:26I must find someone else to do that.
28:28But you needn't worry.
28:29Your name won't be mentioned.
28:35I may have another little assignment for you.
28:38If I can be of service.
28:40It may not be quite so enjoyable.
28:44One can't always combine business with pleasure.
28:49No.
28:51And usually, it's better not to.
28:57You may go now.
29:02You knew about it!
29:05You knew all along, but you did nothing.
29:08Nothing!
29:09What could I do?
29:10I'm not her keeper.
29:11You could have gone to Augustus.
29:13But I thought that like everybody else, he knew and had just closed his eyes to it.
29:17Shame on you.
29:21Shame that you should think him such a man when he thinks so highly of you.
29:26She's my mother.
29:27Would you have me inform on her?
29:28You could have come to me!
29:31You could have come to me!
29:33Do you think if I'd known I'd have stood by and done nothing?
29:36Don't you think I'd have tried to save her for her own sake and now it's too late to save either of you?
29:44Gods.
29:45I should have told you it's true.
29:51You should have told him that's what he'll say.
29:54But it's not for that alone that he'll condemn you.
29:57That you did nothing is bad enough.
30:00But you did more.
30:02You aided and abetted.
30:03No!
30:05No!
30:06You acted as her pimp and her procurer!
30:08That's not true!
30:09Liar!
30:11Do you deny that you introduced your friend Plautius to her for that purpose?
30:15Plautius?
30:17Do you deny he's been her lover?
30:19Do you deny he was the chief organizer of her disgusting orgies but that the house in Antium and here in Rome
30:24and he's not the first one of your friends to have wound up in her bed?
30:27Oh you must believe me.
30:28It may look that way to you.
30:29How would it look to Augustus?
30:31Like mother like son that's how it'll look.
30:34What a blow this will be to him.
30:43Not enough that his daughter is revealed as the town prostitute
30:47but that her son whom he groomed for the highest office
30:51has connived with her, encouraged her
30:55and even supplied her with lovers.
31:04What can I do?
31:06Nothing.
31:07There's nothing you can do.
31:10Between you and your mother you will have destroyed the two dearest things in his life.
31:16And to think that I, his wife, should have to expose the corruption in his own family.
31:27Let me do it.
31:28Please.
31:29Give me this one chance to make good.
31:30It's not as it seems, I swear it.
31:32You.
31:34Please.
31:35My sin was one of a mission, nothing else.
31:38Give me this chance to redeem myself.
31:41Give me the list.
31:55Very well.
31:56Let it be your doing and not mine.
32:46Lelius Sextus Valvus?
32:49Is it true?
32:51Have you slept with my daughter?
32:55Caesar, I answer the question.
33:00Yes, Caesar.
33:03And you?
33:05Marcus Felucius Saturnius?
33:08Have you slept with my daughter?
33:12Caesar...
33:13Just answer the question.
33:19Yes, Caesar.
33:22And you?
33:24Have you?
33:26And you?
33:27I'll play a Snobanus Flaccus.
33:32Once, Caesar.
33:35Ah, only once.
33:37That's all.
33:38Not slept, Caesar.
33:49Not slept?
33:51You mean it happened standing up, perhaps?
33:53Or in the street?
33:54Or on a bench?
33:55Not slept?
33:56I'm good.
34:03I'm sorry.
34:06I'm sorry.
34:06Is there anyone in Rome who has not slept with my doctor?
34:33Take them out!
34:35I'll decide what to do with them later!
34:43Father!
34:44No, no!
34:45I'm all right.
34:46This must have been hard for you.
34:48Terrible.
34:49It's a wonderful thing you've done coming to me like this.
34:50I'm proud of you.
34:51Don't tell me where she's gone, don't ever mention her name, but let her...
35:07You'll banish her.
35:14Banish her for life.
35:16Don't tell me where she's gone, don't ever mention her name, but let her...
35:20Let her be all alone.
35:22All alone until she dies.
35:24She's not fit for human company!
35:26Father!
35:27Father!
35:29Please!
35:31Please let me in!
35:33Let me talk to you!
35:35Let me explain!
35:36Father!
35:37Father!
35:38Father!
35:39Please!
35:40Please!
35:41Don't send me away!
35:42Please!
35:43Please!
35:44Please!
35:45Please!
35:46Please!
35:47Please!
35:48Don't send me away!
35:49Please!
35:50Please!
35:51Please!
35:52Please!
35:53Don't send me away!
35:54Please!
35:55Please!
35:56Please!
35:57Don't send me away!
35:59I couldn't bear it!
36:00I couldn't bear it!
36:01I couldn't bear it!
36:03Not alone!
36:05Please. Please.
36:15Please. Please, Father.
36:20Please. Please, let me, let me deport you.
36:25Please. Please.
36:30Father, please.
36:32Please. Please.
36:35Give me another chance.
36:38Please.
36:43Please.
36:57This is your doing, isn't it?
37:00Don't think I don't know.
37:03You think you're very clever.
37:06You think that by discrediting me he'll bring your son back from Rhodes.
37:10You're so transparent.
37:12You want that precious son of yours to follow him when he dies so that you can come into your own.
37:19But I have two sons and they both come before yours.
37:23So make your mind up to it, Livia.
37:27When my father dies, you won't be wanted any more.
37:33So take my advice and climb on the funeral pile with him.
37:39So, you've come out of your room at last.
37:53I'm cursed, Livia.
37:54I'm cursed, Livia.
37:55I'm cursed.
37:56First Gaius, then this.
37:57First Gaius, then this.
37:58First Gaius, then this.
37:59So, you've come out of your room at last.
38:02So, you've come out of your room at last.
38:05So, you've come out of your room at last.
38:18I'm cursed, Livia.
38:22I'm cursed.
38:24First Gaius, then this.
38:26What have I done to deserve this?
38:30Yes.
38:33It's a hard thing to see a child banished.
38:38Don't I know that?
38:41But how much harder, my dear, when one knows the banishment is undeserved.
38:47Have you thought of that?
38:49Have you thought how I have felt all these years?
38:56Yes.
39:04You must let my son come home.
39:08With Lucius in Spain, we need him here in Rome.
39:12And besides, can't you see now, it has been plain to me for so many years,
39:18that it was her wickedness that drove him away.
39:26I'll never bring him back, never.
39:29He drove her to it.
39:30He was the one who set her on that road.
39:32None of this would have happened but for him.
39:34I'll never bring him back, never.
39:36He can stay there and rot.
39:37He can stay there and rot!
40:00Excellency, there's a ship in the harbour.
40:02I know, I've seen it.
40:04I believe it comes from Rome.
40:05I'm sure it will bring important letters for you.
40:07In fact, I thought they might already have arrived before I got here.
40:10No, Thrasillus, nothing has arrived.
40:13What do you see in your horoscope?
40:15It must be good news.
40:16I'm not looking at my horoscope, Thrasillus. I'm looking at yours.
40:19At mine?
40:21You must be joking.
40:22If there's good news on that boat, you'll find it in your horoscope.
40:25Not in mine.
40:27Mine has been so indecisive lately,
40:28I thought it would make more sense if I examined yours.
40:32But why?
40:33What could that possibly tell you?
40:36Let me put it this way.
40:38I decided this morning that if nothing pleasing came off that boat,
40:41I would have you thrown down the face of the cliff into the bay.
40:45That's very funny. Very funny.
40:55What exactly does it say?
40:58Can you see anything?
41:00Oh yes, it's very clear.
41:02It confirms my worst fears for your safety.
41:06Extraordinary how accurate these things are, isn't it?
41:10Who would have thought that I could have made a decision about you this morning?
41:13And seen it clearly reflected in the chart this afternoon.
41:16Perhaps...
41:17Perhaps you've cast it wrong.
41:19Not as wrong as you've been casting mine.
41:21Excellency, there's news coming from that boat.
41:23I'm sure of it.
41:25Didn't you see the eagle perched on your roof this morning?
41:28There are no eagles in roads.
41:31Exactly!
41:33Yet why was it there?
41:34The whole town was pointing at it.
41:36It could mean only one thing.
41:37Good news.
41:38Alas, but not for you.
41:41Centaur!
41:42Excellency, let me look at the chart.
41:43A man's destiny is not so easily read, believe me.
41:47Yours is.
41:48I wrote it myself this morning.
41:51Centaur, escort my friend down the cliff path.
41:55And take care. I have a terrible feeling he may slip.
41:57His stars speak of nothing but disasters.
41:59Yes, Master.
42:00An Imperial courier has arrived with dispatches.
42:03Show him out.
42:04My friend can wait a while.
42:10You see, Excellency, a horoscope like the heart of a man is not so easy to read.
42:16Let's see what the dispatches say, shall we?
42:20Your prophecies haven't inspired much confidence lately.
42:23Imperial dispatch from Augustus Caesar for the noble Tiberius Claudius Nero.
42:53Lucious is dead.
42:58I am to return to Rome.
43:01Dead.
43:03Dead.
43:05Dead.
43:08Dead.
43:10Dead!
43:11Dead.
43:25Dead.
43:27Sir, all Rome is drowned in Greek.
43:31Well, of course they are.
43:33It's only natural!
43:38What happened?
43:39What happened?
43:40It was terrible.
43:41A boating accident.
43:42A boating accident!
43:43Where?
43:44In Marseille.
43:47He was on his way to Spain, he and his friend.
43:53His friend?
43:54Caius Plautius Silvanus.
43:56They were travelling together.
43:57They were waiting for the boat to take them to Spain.
44:00While they waited, they went out fishing.
44:02Fishing!
44:03I don't understand.
44:10Why are you laughing?
44:12It's nervous laughter.
44:15Go on with your story.
44:24Go on, go on.
44:26The boat overturned.
44:28Overturned?
44:30Yes.
44:31Shall I go on?
44:34Plautius behaved like a hero.
44:36He swam for two miles, holding on to his friend in a desperate effort to save him.
44:40But when he got to the shore, his friend was dead.
44:42And he himself in a state of total exhaustion.
44:46What a terrible thing.
44:49Gaius and Lucius, within 18 months, and their mother vanished in between.
44:56You know, that family is beginning to resemble a Greek tragedy.
45:03Is your ship returning to Rome?
45:05Yes, sir.
45:06Tomorrow.
45:07We'll join it.
45:09You may go now.
45:11Is it for you?
45:12Yes.
45:13That's it.
45:14Has all happened for years around.
45:15Who has all happened to the dead?
45:16Who has all happened to room silently?
45:17A sign for any坊.
45:18What is his name for sure is called an angel?
45:20Okay.
45:21The message of your friend had delayed in conversation.
45:23The city may have Нils or reached temptation if it were an VIP.
45:24Believe these events have been consistently.
45:25did it? brave Thrasilis. I never lost faith in you.
45:34So, you've come home. Yes, Caesar. I'm here to do whatever you want.
46:02Hmm. Well, let bygones be bygones, eh? Families quarrel. They make it up. That's in the
46:11nature of things.
46:17My two grandsons are dead.
46:22My daughter. People say bring her back. They shout at me in the street. You know
46:33that? Hmm. Wicked they say. Bring her back. But no, no, no, no, no, no. She's not my
46:41daughter anymore. I've forgotten her.
46:44Anyway, we'll talk later. There's a lot to be done. Trouble in Germany. The Parthins are
46:55at it again. That king of theirs always stirring up trouble. I've got his son as a
47:00hostage. I swore I'd execute him. But he's such a likeable little chap.
47:08That likeable little chap he talks about is in fact now the king who's causing all the
47:27trouble. His mind is going. Yes. But mine isn't. You'll dine with me tonight and we'll
47:37talk. Yes, mother.
47:47Cheer up, posthumous. Come and play nuts.
47:57What's the matter?
48:02Nothing.
48:03Oh, sir. Be cheerful. Caesar has adopted you into his family and made you his heir. That
48:12is an honour. It means you'll succeed him.
48:17Yes, Herod. But he's adopted my stepfather too. And we both can't succeed him. Can we?
48:28I'm frightened. I want my mother. I want my brothers. Where are they? Where are they?
48:50Right.
48:51Yes, my dad.
