00:00As we know that we are focusing on how to reverse a bad quality sperm to make it good quality sperm.
00:08Last week, we talked about how the warmth of the testicle can actually reduce the sperm production.
00:16But this week, we're going to talk about what you put in your mouth orally or in your diet or in your lifestyle
00:22is going to have an impact on your fertility and how we're going to reverse that.
00:30Interestingly, this is based on a study that is looking at Mediterranean diets.
00:40It is noted that people who live around the Mediterranean area actually have significantly better quality sperms.
00:48And how is it better? It's better in number.
00:50So the number is significantly more than 15 million.
00:54And motility is more than 40%.
00:56And lastly, normal morphology with head, neck and tail is more than 4%.
01:02And further analysis of this is noted several things.
01:07Number one is actually the diet.
01:11In the Mediterranean diet, it's actually filled with more fruit and vegetables.
01:15So fruit and vegetable contains significant amount of antioxidant like vitamin C and vitamin E and selenium.
01:24And that contains also some nuts and beans.
01:27And that is particularly helpful for the actually antioxidant effect of spermatogenesis.
01:35Second part of Mediterranean diet actually contains quite a number of fish.
01:41And especially fish that contains fatty acids.
01:46The good fatty acids like omega-3 is particularly good for spermatogenesis.
01:52And the other thing, which is the shellfish.
01:55Shellfish such as oysters contains a lot of zinc.
02:00And that itself is crucial for spermatogenesis.
02:03Apart from that, it is also noted that less stress in the Mediterranean lifestyle is significantly better for the spermatogenesis as well.
02:14So what is bad for spermatogenesis?
02:17In fact, it is compared with Western American diet,
02:21it is noted that high alcohol consumption, i.e. more than 2 units per week,
02:28is going to suppress spermatogenesis.
02:30Apart from that, smoking.
02:32Smoking actually contains a lot of chemicals that can suppress the spermatogenesis
02:38and cause fragmentations of the DNA in sperms.
02:44And lastly, the actual pesticides.
02:48When pesticides is used quite regularly in fruit and vegetables, in Western diets,
02:53and then that is noted to show a significant impact on the suppression of spermatogenesis.
03:01There's also other study that noted that lifestyle such as stress can actually cause spermatogenesis suppression.
03:12First of all, you need to have enough hydration.
03:16Drinking more than 2 to 2.5 litres of water is particularly good for circulation.
03:20Number 2 is exercise and not having weight gain.
03:25Because when somebody has a significant amount of weight gain,
03:29overweight can actually cause significant conversion of testosterone to the actual estrogen,
03:36and that is not particularly good for spermatogenesis.
03:39For the following week, we're going to talk about another reversal of the sperm production,
03:46which is for men who is having a U-turn because after a vasectomy,
03:51they plan to have a reversal.
03:53And how is that going to impact on spermatogenesis?
03:56Stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
