In the month of September, which is generally considered a sexual health month, we want
00:05
to focus on what exactly happened to men after they decided to use vasectomy as a form of
00:11
contraception.
00:13
And the commonly asked question is what happened to the sperm or semen after vasectomy.
00:26
In fact, there are two different matters altogether.
00:29
What happened to the semen and what happened to the sperm.
00:33
Let's deal with what happened to the semen first.
00:35
If you imagine a typical man will ejaculate between 4-6ml of liquid during climax and
00:43
out of that liquid, 99% actually produced by the prostate and only 1% actually is the
00:51
sperm that mixed with that liquid.
00:54
In fact, the prostatic secretions contain a lot of nutrition and lubricant and also
01:00
alkaline solution to neutralise the acidity in the actual vagina itself so it facilitate
01:08
the sperm swimming.
01:10
So after a vasectomy, in fact, there is no change in the semen at all.
01:15
So the amount that is ejaculated, the texture that is ejaculated, the temperature, the colour
01:22
and everything else remain unchanged.
01:24
The only thing is that it does not contain any sperm.
01:30
So that leads to the second question.
01:33
What exactly happens to the sperms?
01:35
In fact, actually the sperm is continuous being produced, they actually stay in the
01:41
lining of the epididymis and after about a period of 90-120 days, it will die and the
01:50
body will absorb it.
01:52
Imagine that someone like a monk who doesn't ejaculate or who doesn't actually involve
01:56
in sexual activity, eventually the sperm will be produced, mature and also survive and die
02:04
and it's the same thing because after vasectomy, the sperm doesn't actually get out.
02:09
So there is a good thing and a bad thing.
02:12
The good thing is that the continuous production of sperm eventually will die so that itself
02:19
may mean that if someone change their mind, they can actually retrieve the sperm and directly
02:24
make a test tube baby.
02:26
Alternatively, that accumulated sperm itself might actually undergo changes and sometimes
02:33
it might cause slight discomfort in the initial part after the vasectomy.
02:38
So for next week, we are going to focus a lot more about vasectomy and what happens
02:43
to your libido and also your climax and also more importantly, your erection after vasectomy.
02:53
Stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
