Hello there, welcome to the month of December. Believe it or not, we're only a few weeks away
00:05
from 2025. I thought for the month of December this year, as we are ending 2024, I would like
00:14
to debunk a few myths about urology. And the first myth I would like to debunk, it's about
00:22
correlations between vasectomy and also prostate cancer. I recently came across a few patients who
00:35
asked me, doctor I'm not really keen on vasectomy because I hear that vasectomy is associated with
00:41
prostate cancer. And that prompted me to find out what is the correlations between prostate cancer
00:47
and also vasectomy. In fact, it all came out from one publication. I actually look at some patients
00:55
who had a vasectomy and whether there's an increased risk of getting prostate cancer. And
01:01
this was a retrospective study looking at a number of patients as that was published in 2014.
01:08
And it was noticed that men who had prostate cancer, about 10% of them probably underwent
01:15
vasectomy and that prompted the whole worry about prostate cancer. But this study was completely
01:22
unfounded. Number one, there is no specific analysis of exactly what group of patients were at risk
01:30
and specific analysis of what exactly was the link between the pathogenesis of vasectomy and
01:38
prostate cancer. However, I would like to bring your attention to a much bigger study.
01:44
In 1998, there's already one study looking into this, analyzing a number of patients, in fact
01:52
363,000 of them and looking at the number of people who had vasectomy, which is about 42,000.
02:01
And out of all these people, the number of people who died of prostate cancer actually is about
02:07
7,400 and there is no correlation between people who had the vasectomy and people who did not have
02:13
vasectomy. So on that basis, you can be rest assured that there is no link between vasectomy
02:20
and subsequent risk of prostate cancer. In fact, prostate cancer is probably linked to lifestyle,
02:26
such as high meat intake lifestyle, high animal fat intake and also sedentary lifestyle. And all
02:33
these men are more at risk of prostate cancer, especially you have got genetic basis of risks
02:40
such as BRCA genes and also breast cancer and prostate cancer in the family.
02:45
The second week, we're going to talk about correlation between frequency of sex and also
02:51
prostate cancer. Is there a link of a reduction of the risk of prostate cancer or increased risk
02:57
of prostate cancer? If you are interested, stay tuned for next week's Putting Dr. G on the Spot.
