00:00Today is July 11, 7-Eleven, and 7-Eleven does free Slurpees on 7-Eleven Day.
00:07And Joe Zygacki, the voice of the Miami Hurricanes, is joining us.
00:12I know his lovely wife is in the car with him as well.
00:15We're watching the video.
00:17Where are you?
00:18You're at a 7-Eleven somewhere?
00:20Yes, Hawk, Cheryl, and I.
00:22It's a road trip, you know.
00:23There's not a 7-Eleven in our neighborhood.
00:27So now we're in Pembroke Pines.
00:28Should I say where we are?
00:30We're tapped in Flamingo.
00:33And it's very popular.
00:34A lot of people are, I've been sitting here doing the play-by-play of people going in and out of the door.
00:39Some are going in for seconds and thirds.
00:42So now you're there at that particular 7-Eleven.
00:46Should we do a promotion where if anyone walks up to you, you will buy them a donut or something?
00:51As long as you're giving away your exact location?
00:53Do you want to flex a little bit?
00:55Well, here's the deal with that.
00:56I'm more than happy to buy them a donut or buy them a taquito, a color grill, a five-piece bone-in wings, or some Newports.
01:12Newports.
01:13The corporate card that's in my wallet.
01:22What a great radio promotion.
01:25If you go see Joe Zagagki at a 7-Eleven, I'll buy you a pack of new.
01:30If the audience finds offline, I'll buy someone, you know, some Marlboro.
01:33I'm assuming you were just reading all the posters on the 7-Eleven windows there as you've rattled off the entire menu.
01:42Well, third down in seven for the Kings and the 35, save when you buy two, Marlboro.
01:48All right, are you going to, are you, hey, do you remember, how does your brain work?
01:56Do you remember the national championship game last year?
01:58We, we're so bad at like, I, I can retain 80s music.
02:02That's my wheelhouse movie lines.
02:04But like sports matchups, Super Bowls, NBA championships, even national championship games, which I watched, I was into, I wagered on.
02:13In the last segment, I couldn't even remember who played in last year's national championship.
02:18You could like, could you rattle off 20 years in a row?
02:21Probably not.
02:22But last year's national championship game, the problem that I have with it is I was with the University of Miami basketball team.
02:29And we had a flight to San Francisco, which was delayed.
02:34So I missed the game because I was in the air.
02:36I still have not watched it, but I am going to watch it before Miami plays Notre Dame.
02:41You know, what do we got like six weeks until I game?
02:45So I've yet to watch it, but I will watch it.
02:49But I didn't have a chance because we were flying to California.
02:52Are we ready to go?
02:53By the way, is Carson Beck, the, the starting quarterback, is he healthy?
02:57And like, are we like, is everything in place?
03:00Do we know anything about this team?
03:02Like, are they going to be legit good?
03:03Or we have no idea till they take the field week one.
03:07No, I think they're going to be good because they've recruited at a high level.
03:11A lot of those homegrown players or, you know, high school players that they recruited are now juniors.
03:17Guys like Mark Fletcher and Reuben Bain.
03:20Everybody talks about the transfer portal, but you need guys like Fletcher and Bain to have great seasons.
03:26And those were guys that are homegrown, local, high school players that have been developed in the system.
03:32And then they've been surrounded by these transfer portal players, namely Carson Beck.
03:38I think he's going to be very good from what I understand he's been throwing.
03:43And, you know, I know there's this, for some reason, he's coming under a lot of criticism.
03:47And I don't get it.
03:49As I mentioned before, his last six games last year, I think his number was 11 touchdowns and no interceptions.
03:55And I know he's got this injured wing or had one, but it's not like he's forgotten how to play football.
04:00He played at a high level for Georgia.
04:02And I think, you know, this would be saying the bar very high, I guess.
04:07But the defense has got to be a lot better than it was a year ago.
04:10Joe, it's funny you say that because I was going to ask about the defense because Cam Ward got us out of a lot of trouble in them late games.
04:17We were winning game 45-42.
04:19I don't think you can't set up your team with doing that.
04:22And is the defense, Corey Heatherman, what was he in, Minnesota?
04:26Is it, it's not the same competition as the ACC.
04:30Can his aggressive defense, what I've heard you talk about, can that translate?
04:34And does he have the guns to run it?
04:36Well, it better translate.
04:37That's why he was brought here.
04:39Minnesota's in the Big Ten.
04:40So, you know, they played quality competition.
04:43The Big Ten won the last two national championships.
04:46So, there you go, Hawk.
04:47There's two in a row for you.
04:49Michigan, Ohio State.
04:51They were a top 25.
04:54They were top 25 total defense.
04:57I think they were top 10 red zone defense.
05:00Coincidentally, in the spring game, the offense had a first and goal at the one-yard line and didn't punch it in.
05:07They got held in the spring game.
05:09So, maybe you can't read much into that, but I know that was a point of emphasis.
05:14And they took the ball away a lot a year ago.
05:17And I do think there is something to coordinators that generate turnovers.
05:23And he's a guy that in his career, his defenses have been able to take the ball away.
05:27So, I suspect Miami will be better with that part of their defense.
05:32At least I hope so.
05:33And, yeah, the defense last year, you know, ultimately, if you look back at last season and scratch your head, you say, well, they didn't get to the playoff because their defense wasn't good enough.
05:45And that's it.
05:47Real quick, before we send you in to get the slurpees, just speaking of recruiting, you mentioned the word recruiting.
05:52What about the basketball team?
05:53How has Jay Lucas done?
05:55Because I read something the other day that they've got a pretty decent recruiting class so far.
06:00Yeah, I think he did very well.
06:01It's going to be unusual because it's an entirely new team.
06:06I have never seen anything like it.
06:08They're going to have 12 or 13 completely new players and completely new coaching staff.
06:15So, the question will be, you know, how fast do you bring them together?
06:19Can they achieve an identity early in the season?
06:24What will that identity be?
06:25And if it's based on what he did at Duke, what his responsibility was at Duke, he was, you know, in charge of defense.
06:32So, you would think that he wants to build a team that can defend and rebound.
06:38If you look at the roster, the players on this roster, their qualifications are, you know, guys that were very good defenders, good rebounders.
06:47And every position is sized.
06:49They're going to be big, especially on the wing.
06:52Now, can they score a lot?
06:54I don't think they brought in elite scorers.
06:57But I think for him, he wants to start with defense and rebounding.
07:00All right.
07:01Let's send you into 7-11.
07:02You're there with your wife, Cheryl.
07:03Now, if you don't want to get the free Slurpees, which I think are very small, and you want to get, because it's very hot out today, you guys want to get the regular-sized Slurpees, larges, I'm happy to reimburse you for it because this is fun for us.
07:17So, I want you to get whatever you want to get.
07:19Oh, you're going to reimburse.
07:20Like I said, I have the corporate card.
07:22You ready?
07:22Yeah.
07:22Well, do it however you want to work it.
07:25Sorry, forget to shut it off.
07:27I've done that before.
07:29I haven't done that yet, but I'm sure I'm coming close.
07:32You just leave your car on and walk away?
07:35I'm sure that's just around the corner.
07:40A lot of people out.
07:41Here we go.
07:42Here we go.
07:44The Zagakis are, I'll give you a little play-by-play.
07:46I'm watching video.
07:48Zagakis are walking outside.
07:51They're going into 7-11 right now.
07:52See?
07:54This.
07:55Free Slurpee.
07:57Free Slurpee day.
07:58All right.
07:59Do you know how to flip your camera around?
08:00Can you flip the camera around?
08:02He can't.
08:03He can't.
08:04Francisco is our, is our, um, he's the owner.
08:09He's the cash register person.
08:10What are you?
08:12Oh, look at that.
08:12You know the, uh, you know the guy.
08:14Oh.
08:16Oh, wait a minute.
08:16Now, look at you.
08:17We got a large jam here.
08:18You think I should go right in front of all these people?
08:21Look it.
08:22Just yell, I'm Joe Zagaki, and I'm Joe Zagaki over and over again.
08:26Yeah.
08:26I don't, I don't think some of these people, people speak English.
08:30Well, say it in Spanish.
08:31Yo soy Joe Zagaki.
08:33Okay.
08:35Wait a minute.
08:36So we have a green flavor.
08:37We have green.
08:38Should I go for green for the University of Miami?
08:42Makes sense.
08:43We have a log jam here at the.
08:46We can't, we can't make our own slurpee.
08:48She says she has to do it for us.
08:50Oh, wait a minute.
08:50Oh, interesting.
08:52So you can't squirt your own slurpee.
08:55I'm on the radio right now.
08:57She doesn't want to be on the radio.
08:58She says she has to make the slurpee for us.
09:00Hey Joe, say move, say move it or lose it.
09:02Say dose, dose slurpee.
09:04Wait a minute.
09:04They're putting out cups.
09:06Okay.
09:06What color do you want?
09:07All right.
09:07Well, Hawk, we're going to go with, um, what's that green?
09:11It's all green's not ready yet.
09:15Green's not.
09:16Ask her what's ready.
09:17Ask her what's good.
09:18What's ready?
09:18What's ready?
09:20Wild cherry.
09:21What about this?
09:23Mountain Dew.
09:24What about Coke?
09:26Ask her if they can make it extra thick like a milkshake.
09:28Yeah.
09:29Okay.
09:29Can we do a, can we, can we mix them?
09:31Yeah.
09:32Okay.
09:32Give me wild, wild cherry.
09:35There we go.
09:36And Coke.
09:37There you go.
09:37Oh, that's a good mix right there.
09:39Yeah.
09:39Now, ask her when they give away free cigarettes.
09:44What day is that?
09:45What day is free cigarette day?
09:47We have free cigarette day.
09:49We give away free cigarettes.
09:52I love how Joe has no, no respect for her saying, I don't want to be on camera.
09:59I don't know how well this is working, but.
10:01All right.
10:01Listen, you're in a public place.
10:02If you're in a public place, you're going to be on camera.
10:04It's the way today's world works.
10:05I'm going to go to Azul.
10:07Azul.
10:07All right.
10:08Cheryl's getting a blue one.
10:10Mm-hmm.
10:10Oh, Larry Blustein's in.
10:11Practicing in case she's on 790.
10:15Hey, Missy.
10:20Abuelo.
10:21All right.
10:21This is delightful.
10:23This is truly delightful.
10:25Okay.
10:26Grandpa's coming out.
10:27Did I hear?
10:28Yeah.
10:28Did I hear?
10:29Somebody, somebody just yelled out abuelo to Joe Zagaki.
10:32How are you?
10:34Is that your granddaughter?
10:35Yeah.
10:36And your grandson?
10:38Oh, okay.
10:38Hi.
10:39You're on the radio.
10:41Good.
10:41Yeah.
10:41I'm going to bring you some business.
10:43This is for you.
10:43You want to say hello to Francisco?
10:45I would love to.
10:46Say hi, Francisco.
10:47Hey, how you doing, sir?
10:49Happy 7-Eleven day, Francisco.
10:51Happy 7-Eleven day.
10:52This is a big day at 7-Eleven.
10:54Thank you, sir.
10:55Yeah, it is.
10:55We are enjoying.
10:57I'm having fun.
10:57What is the best Slurpee flavor?
11:00What is your opinion?
11:01Best Slurpee flavor?
11:02Best Slurpee flavor.
11:03All right.
11:04What's the best Slurpee flavor?
11:06We have a Coke, a cherry, a blueberry.
11:09They are the best.
11:11I mean, the three best sellers.
11:13All right.
11:13Not Pina Colada?
11:15Not Pina Colada.
11:16Ask them if they have Pina Colada.
11:18Yeah, Pina Colada.
11:20We don't.
11:21We have, besides that, we have Dragon Fruit.
11:25We have one color.
11:30For people keeping healthy, you know, if you want to keep healthy.
11:32But it's one late.
11:34I don't know, something like that.
11:36All right.
11:37Six flavors.
11:38Hold on.
11:39Tell them thank you.
11:40Tell them thank you for playing along with us.
11:41We appreciate it.
11:45You follow the University of Miami?
11:46Maybe ask him about the cigarettes.
11:48He has some pool.
11:51Francisco's a hurricane.
11:52Ah, very nice.
11:53Nice.
11:54Hey, Crowder.
11:56You want one of these?
11:59I'll eat me a glizzy now, Joe.
12:03How about some Monterey Jack taquitos?
12:06Oh, I mean, bring a couple of those.
12:09We're good to go.
12:10All right.
12:10Have Cheryl give us a review of the Slurpee.
12:13Okay.
12:14How's the Slurpee?
12:15The Slurpee is fabulous.
12:17Which flavor did she get?
12:18Azul?
12:19I have blue.
12:20Multiple blue.
12:22Very nice.
12:22Do you want us to bring you back any Funyuns or pork rinds?
12:27What are we going for?
12:28Oh, you're speaking Crowder's language.
12:30Do they have boiled peanuts there, Joe?
12:33Boiled peanuts.
12:38Joe literally has to drive right past my neighborhood to get home from there.
12:42I know exactly where he is.
12:44I'm coming right by your house.
12:45Pickled peanuts.
12:45In the next segment, you could show up with a can of boiled peanuts, and it would make my day.
12:52All right, Joe, we got to go.
12:54We love you.
12:55You are the greatest friend that this show has ever had, and I'm glad you and your wife were able to enjoy a couple Slurpees on our time.
13:02I recommend the Coke and Cherry.
13:04That's a good mix.
13:05That's a savvy veteran move right there.
13:08All right, go check.
13:09Make sure your car is not still on, Joe.
13:10Okay.
13:11Bye-bye.
13:13Joe's a gag.
13:14That was just delightful.
13:17That was, I mean, that couldn't have gone any better, could it have?
13:20I love it.
13:21I love that.
13:23I just love it.
13:24I like sitting to Joe in the world because he's Joe everywhere.
13:27Joe in the world is delightful to me.
13:32He's got no filter.
13:34Nothing.
13:35He just doesn't care.
13:39He was at the top of his lungs.
13:40He's like, I don't think half these people speak English.
13:44I stopped in the middle of the road.
13:47Oh, he's something to stay under your breath.
13:49Middle of the road to say hi to him.
13:51And the car behind me starts talking.
13:55He just waves at him.
13:56Hey, Joe, they don't want to be your friend.
13:59They want to move.
14:00And he does the thing that makes me cringe, which, you know, like, you ever with someone and they're like, hey, tell them you're on the radio.
14:06You know, you'll give them publicity or whatever.
14:08And I'm like, oh, don't do that because they don't know what, you know.
14:10And he's like, University of Miami.
14:12I got you.
14:13I got you on the air time.
14:15I just, I love him.
14:16I love him.
14:17He's like, you're on the radio.
14:18The girl clearly puts her hand over her face.
14:20Two seconds later, look here.
14:22Look, you're on the radio.
14:23Look, look.
14:23But also, like, in 2025, nobody even knows what radio is.
14:27And he's just a guy talking into his phone.
14:30So, you know, and it's like, so, like, the girl's going, huh?
14:34What?
14:35I'm on the radio.
14:36Hey, guy, you're on your phone.
14:38I don't want to leave your message.
14:40We've got to get a sponsor.
14:41Joe in the world.
14:42Joe in the world.
14:44That is just rape.
14:47I enjoy it.
14:49Man.
14:50Jimmy on the phone and Joe in the world.
14:52You should have heard Solana earlier this morning trying to check this all with Joe
14:57to make sure he could do this technologically, which is just a FaceTime call, essentially.
15:03But, like, Solana, like, put an hour in this afternoon and then called me and he goes,
15:08we got to get younger friends of the show.
15:13What's funny is I spent an hour showing him that he could just turn his back to whatever
15:20he wants us to see with his face in it and talk to us so we could see the slurpy action
15:24behind us.
15:25And all we really got was just Joe's a guy.
15:28Which was, that made it so much better to me.
15:30I love that.
15:31I absolutely love that.
15:32Because after that was just his neck.
15:37That was great.
15:38Well, happy 7-Eleven day, everybody.
15:40That could not have been any better, in my opinion.
15:43That could not have been any better, in my opinion.
