The Book of Micah is one of the Twelve Minor Prophets in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh) and the Christian Old Testament, delivering a powerful message of divine justice, social responsibility, and hope for future restoration. Written by the prophet Micah, who was from the small town of Moresheth in Judah, the book reflects his ministry during the 8th century BCE, around the same time as Isaiah, Amos, and Hosea. Micah prophesied during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, witnessing both the moral decay of society and the looming threat of foreign invasion, particularly from the Assyrian Empire.

Micah’s prophecy is directed primarily at both Israel (the Northern Kingdom) and Judah (the Southern Kingdom), condemning their corruption, idolatry, oppression of the poor, and the greed of political and religious leaders. He warns that because of their sins, both kingdoms will face destruction—a prophecy that aligns with the historical events of the fall of Samaria (Israel) to Assyria in 722 BCE and the later siege of Jerusalem by Sennacherib in 701 BCE.

One of the most famous aspects of Micah’s message is his call for social justice. He strongly criticizes the exploitation of the vulnerable, dishonest rulers, and the hypocrisy of religious leaders who prioritize rituals over righteousness. The most well-known verse from the book, Micah 6:8, encapsulates its central theme:
"He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God."
This verse has become a defining expression of biblical ethics, emphasizing that true faith is not about religious observance alone but about living with integrity, compassion, and humility.

Despite its warnings of judgment, the Book of Micah also carries a strong message of hope. Micah foresees the future restoration of Israel and the coming of a messianic ruler from Bethlehem, famously prophesying in Micah 5:2 that a ruler will come from the small town of Bethlehem Ephrathah, a prophecy later interpreted in Christianity as referring to Jesus Christ.

00:00The Word of the Lord that came to Micah, the Morasthite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.
00:18Hear, all ye people, hearken, O earth, and all that therein is, and let the Lord God be witness against you, the Lord from his holy temple.
00:28For behold, the Lord cometh forth out of his place, and will come down, and tread upon the high places of the earth, and the mountains shall be molten under him, and the valleys shall be cleft, as wax before the fire, and as the waters that are poured down a steep place.
00:47For the transgression of Jacob is all this, and for the sins of the house of Israel.
00:53What is the transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria?
01:00And what are the high places of Judah? Are they not Jerusalem?
01:05Therefore I will make Samaria an heap of the field, and as plantings of a vineyard, and I will pour down the stones thereof into the valley, and I will discover the foundations thereof.
01:18And all the graven images thereof, and all the graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces, and all the hires thereof shall be burned with fire, and all the idols thereof will I lay desolate.
01:29For she gathered it of the hire of an harlot, and they shall return to the hire of an harlot.
01:36Therefore I will wail and howl, I will go stripped and naked, I will make a wailing like the dragons, and mourning as the owls.
01:46For her wound is incurable, for it is come unto Judah, he is come unto the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem.
01:57Declare ye it not at Gath, weep ye not at all, and the house of Aphra roll thyself in the dust.
02:06Pass away, thou inhabitant of Safer, having thy shame naked.
02:11The inhabitant of Zainan came not forth in the morning of Beth-ezil, he shall receive of you his standing.
02:21For the inhabitant of Maroth waited carefully for good, but evil came down from the Lord unto the gate of Jerusalem.
02:30O thou inhabitant of Lachish, bind the chariot to the swift beasts.
02:35She is the beginning of the sin to the daughter of Zion, for the transgressions of Israel were found in thee.
02:43Therefore shalt thou give presents.
02:48To Moresh-eth-gath the houses of Axib shall be a lie to the kings of Israel.
02:54Yet will I bring an heir unto thee, O inhabitant of Moreshah, he shall come unto Adullam, the glory of Israel.
03:07Make thee bald, and pull thee for thy delicate children.
03:11Enlarge thy baldness as an ego, for they are gone into captivity from thee.
03:16Chapter 2
03:19Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds!
03:25When the morning is light they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.
03:31And they covet fields, and take them by violence, and houses, and take them away.
03:36So they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.
03:41Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, against this family do I devise an evil,
03:48from which ye shall not remove your necks, neither shall ye go haughtily, for this time is evil.
03:55In that day shall one take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, and say,
04:02We be utterly spoiled, he hath changed the portion of my people.
04:07How have he removed it from me, turning away, he hath divided our fields?
04:14Therefore thou shalt have none that shall cast a cord by a lot in the congregation of the Lord.
04:23Prophesy ye not, say they to them that prophesy,
04:26they shall not prophesy to them that they shall not take shame.
04:30O thou that art named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of the Lord straitened?
04:39Are these his doings?
04:41Do not my words do good to him that walketh uprightly?
04:45Even of late my people is risen up as an enemy.
04:49Ye pull off the robe with a garment from them that pass by securely,
04:54as men averse from war.
04:56The women of my people have ye cast out from their pleasant houses,
05:01from their children have ye taken away my glory for ever.
05:05Arise ye, and depart, for this is not your rest.
05:10Because it is polluted, it shall destroy you, even with a sore destruction.
05:16If a man walking in the spirit and falsehood do lie, saying,
05:20I will prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink.
05:25He shall even be the prophet of this people.
05:28I will surely assemble, O Jacob, all of thee.
05:31I will surely gather the remnant of Israel.
05:34I will put them together as the sheep of Basra,
05:37as the flock in the midst of their fold.
05:40They shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men.
05:44The breaker is come up before them.
05:46They have broken up, and have passed through the gate,
05:50and are gone out of it.
05:52And their king shall pass before them, and the Lord on the head of them.
05:57Chapter 3
05:58And I said, Here I pray you, O heads of Jacob,
06:04and ye princes of the house of Israel,
06:06is it not for you to know judgment,
06:09who hate the good and love the evil,
06:12who pluck off their skin from off them,
06:14and their flesh from off their bones,
06:16who also eat the flesh of my people,
06:19and flay their skin from off them,
06:21and they break their bones and chop them in pieces,
06:24as for the pot,
06:26and as flesh within the cauldron.
06:28Then shall they cry unto the Lord,
06:30but he will not hear them.
06:32He will even hide his face from them at that time,
06:36as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings.
06:40Thus saith the Lord concerning the prophets that make my people err,
06:45that bite with their teeth and cry,
06:47Peace, and he that putteth not into their mouths,
06:51they even prepare war against him.
06:54Therefore night shall be unto you,
06:56that ye shall not have a vision,
06:58and it shall be dark unto you,
07:00that ye shall not divine.
07:02And the sun shall go down over the prophets,
07:05and the day shall be dark over them.
07:08Then shall the seers be ashamed,
07:10and the diviners confounded.
07:12Yea, they shall all cover their lips,
07:15for there is no answer of God.
07:18But truly I am full of the power of the Spirit of the Lord,
07:22and of judgment, and of might,
07:25to declare unto Jacob his transgression,
07:27and to Israel his sin.
07:29Hear this, I pray you,
07:32ye heads of the house of Jacob,
07:34and princes of the house of Israel,
07:36that abhor judgment,
07:39and pervert all equity.
07:41They build up Zion with blood,
07:43and Jerusalem with iniquity.
07:46The heads thereof judge for reward,
07:49and the priests thereof teach for hire,
07:52and the prophets thereof divine for money.
07:55Yet will they lean upon the Lord,
07:57and say, Is not the Lord among us?
08:00None evil can come upon us.
08:02Therefore shall Zion for your sake
08:05be ploughed as a field,
08:06and Jerusalem shall become heaps,
08:09and the mountains of the house
08:11as the high places of the forest.
08:14Chapter 4
08:15But in the last days it shall come to pass,
08:19that the mountain of the house of the Lord
08:21shall be established in the top of the mountains,
08:24and it shall be exalted above the hills,
08:26and people shall flow unto it.
08:29And many nations shall come and say,
08:31Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
08:35and to the house of the God of Jacob.
08:38And he will teach us of his ways,
08:40and we will walk in his paths.
08:42For the law shall go forth of Zion,
08:45and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
08:47And he shall judge among many people,
08:50and rebuke strong nations afar off.
08:53And they shall beat their swords into plough-shares,
08:56and their spears into pruning-hooks.
08:58Nation shall not lift up a sword against nation,
09:02neither shall they learn war any more.
09:05But they shall sit every man under his vine,
09:08and under his fig-tree,
09:10and none shall make them afraid.
09:11For the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it.
09:16For all people will walk, every one,
09:19in the name of his God,
09:20and we will walk in the name of the Lord our God
09:24for ever and ever.
09:26In that day, saith the Lord,
09:28will I assemble her that halteth,
09:30and I will bring her that is driven out,
09:33and her that I have afflicted.
09:35And I will make her that halted a remnant,
09:38and her that was cast far off a strong nation.
09:41And the Lord shall reign over them
09:44in Mount Zion from henceforth even for ever.
09:49And thou, O tower of the flock,
09:52the stronghold of the daughter of Zion,
09:54unto thee shall it come,
09:56even the first dominion.
09:58The kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.
10:03Now why dost thou cry out aloud,
10:05Is there no king in thee?
10:08Is thy counsellor perished?
10:10For pangs have taken thee
10:12as a woman in travail.
10:15Be in pain,
10:16and labour to bring forth,
10:18O daughter of Zion,
10:19like a woman in travail.
10:22For now shalt thou go forth out of the city,
10:25and thou shalt dwell in the field,
10:26and thou shalt go even to Babylon.
10:29There shalt thou be delivered,
10:31there the Lord shall redeem thee
10:34from the hand of thine enemies.
10:36Now also many nations are gathered against thee that say,
10:40Let her be defiled,
10:43and let our eye look upon Zion.
10:46But they know not the thoughts of the Lord,
10:49neither understand they his counsel,
10:51for he shall gather them
10:53as the sheaves into the floor.
10:56Arise and fresh, O daughter of Zion,
10:58for I will make thine horn iron,
11:02and I will make thy hoofs brass,
11:04and thou shalt beat in pieces many people,
11:07and I will consecrate their grain unto the Lord,
11:11and their substance unto the Lord of the whole earth.
11:15Chapter 5
11:17Now gather thyself in troops,
11:20O daughter of troops.
11:22He hath laid siege against us.
11:25They shall smite the judge of Israel
11:27with a rod upon the cheek.
11:29But thou, Bethlehem, Ephratah,
11:32even though thou be little among the thousands of Judah,
11:35yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me,
11:38that is to be ruler in Israel,
11:41whose goings forth have been from of old,
11:44from everlasting.
11:47Therefore will he give them up
11:48until the time that she which travaileth
11:52hath brought forth.
11:53Then the remnant of his brethren
11:55shall return unto the children of Israel.
11:58And he shall stand and feed
12:01in the strength of the Lord,
12:02in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
12:06And they shall abide,
12:07for now shall he be great
12:10unto the ends of the earth.
12:13And this man shall be the peace
12:15when the Assyrian shall come into our land,
12:18and when he shall tread in our palaces,
12:20then shall we raise up against him
12:23seven shepherds and eight principal men.
12:27And they shall waste the land of Assyria
12:29with the sword and the land of Nimrod
12:32in the entrances thereof.
12:34Thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian
12:37when he cometh into our land,
12:39and when he treadeth within our borders.
12:42And the remnant of Jacob
12:43shall be in the midst of many people
12:45as a dew from the Lord,
12:47as the showers upon the grass,
12:50that tarrieth not for men,
12:52nor waiteth for the sons of men.
12:54And the remnant of Jacob
12:55shall be among the Gentiles
12:57in the midst of many people
12:58as a lion among the beasts of the forest,
13:01as a young lion among the flocks of sheep,
13:04who, if he go through,
13:06both treadeth down,
13:07and teareth in pieces,
13:09and none can deliver.
13:11Thine hand shall be lifted up
13:13upon thine adversaries,
13:14and all thine enemies shall be cut off.
13:17And it shall come to pass in that day,
13:20saith the Lord,
13:21that I will cut off thy horses
13:23out of the midst of thee,
13:25and I will destroy thy chariots,
13:27and I will cut off the cities of thy land,
13:30and throw down all thy strongholds.
13:32And I will cut off witchcrafts
13:35out of thine hand,
13:36and thou shalt have no more soothsayers.
13:39Thy graven images also will I cut off,
13:42and thy standing images
13:43out of the midst of thee,
13:45and thou shalt no more
13:47worship the work of thine hands.
13:49And I will pluck up thy groves
13:51out in the midst of thee,
13:52so will I destroy thy cities,
13:55and I will execute vengeance
13:57and anger
13:58and fury upon the heathen,
14:00such as they have not heard.
14:03Chapter 6
14:04Hear ye now what the Lord saith.
14:08Arise, contend thou before the mountains,
14:11and let the hills hear thy voice.
14:14Hear ye, O mountains,
14:16the Lord's controversy,
14:17and ye strong foundations of the earth.
14:20For the Lord hath a controversy
14:22with his people,
14:23and he will plead with Israel.
14:25O my people,
14:26what have I done unto thee,
14:28and wherein have I wearied thee?
14:30Testify against me.
14:32For I brought thee up
14:33out of the land of Egypt,
14:35and redeemed thee
14:36out of the house of servants,
14:38and I sent before thee
14:39Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
14:42O my people,
14:43remember now
14:44what Balak,
14:45king of Moab,
14:46consulted,
14:48and what Balaam,
14:49the son of Beor,
14:50answered him
14:50from Shittim
14:51unto Gilgal,
14:52that ye may know
14:54the righteousness
14:55of the Lord.
14:56Wherewith shall I come
14:58before the Lord,
14:59and bow myself
15:00before the high God?
15:02Shall I come before him
15:03with burnt offerings,
15:05with calves
15:05of a year old?
15:07Will the Lord be pleased
15:09with thousands of rams,
15:11or with ten thousands
15:12of rivers of oil?
15:14Shall I give my firstborn
15:15firstborn for my transgression,
15:18the fruit of my body
15:19for the sin of my soul?
15:22He hath showed thee,
15:23O man,
15:24what is good,
15:25and what doth the Lord
15:26require of thee
15:27but to do justly,
15:29and to love mercy,
15:31and to walk humbly
15:32with thy God?
15:34The Lord's voice
15:35crieth unto the city,
15:36and the man of wisdom
15:37shall see thy name.
15:39Hear ye the rod,
15:41and who hath appointed it?
15:43Are there yet
15:44the treasures of wickedness
15:45and the house of the wicked,
15:47and the scant measure
15:48that is abominable?
15:50Shall I count them pure
15:51with the wicked balances,
15:54and with the bag
15:54of deceitful weights?
15:56For the rich men thereof
15:58are full of violence,
15:59and the inhabitants thereof
16:01have spoken lies,
16:02and their tongue
16:03is deceitful in their mouth.
16:05Therefore also will I make thee
16:07sick in smiting thee,
16:09and making thee desolate
16:10because of thy sins.
16:12Thou shalt eat,
16:14but not be satisfied,
16:15and thy casting down
16:16shall be in the midst of thee,
16:18and thou shalt take hold,
16:20but shalt not deliver,
16:22and that which thou deliverest
16:23will I give up to the sword.
16:26Thou shalt sow,
16:27but thou shalt not reap,
16:29thou shalt tread thee olives,
16:31but thou shalt not anoint thee
16:32with oil,
16:33and sweet wine,
16:35but shall not drink wine.
16:37For the statutes of Omri
16:38are kept,
16:39and all the works
16:40of the house of Ahab,
16:42and ye walk in their counsels,
16:44that I should make thee
16:45a desolation,
16:47and the inhabitants thereof
16:48an hissing.
16:49Therefore ye shall bear
16:51the reproach
16:52of my people.
16:53Chapter 7
16:55Woe is me,
16:58for I am as when they have gathered
17:00the summer fruits,
17:01as the great gleanings of the vintage.
17:04There is no cluster to eat.
17:06My soul desired the first ripe fruit.
17:09The good man is perished out of the earth,
17:11and there is none upright among men.
17:14They all lie in wait for blood.
17:16They hunt every man
17:18his brother with a net.
17:20That they may do evil
17:22with both hands earnestly,
17:24the prince asketh,
17:25and the judge asketh for a reward.
17:28And the great man,
17:29he uttereth his mischievous desire,
17:32so they wrap it up.
17:33The best of them is as a briar,
17:36the most upright is sharper
17:38than a thorn hedge.
17:39The day of thy watchman
17:41and thy visitation cometh.
17:44Now shall be their perplexity.
17:47Trust ye not in a friend.
17:49Put ye not confidence in a guide.
17:51Keep the doors of thy mouth
17:53from her that lieth in thy bosom.
17:55For the son dishonoreth the father.
17:58The daughter riseth up against her mother.
18:00The daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.
18:03A man's enemies are the men of his own house.
18:07Therefore I will look unto the Lord.
18:09I will wait for the God of my salvation.
18:13My God will hear me.
18:15Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy.
18:17When I fall, I shall arise.
18:20When I sit in darkness,
18:21the Lord shall be a light unto me.
18:24I will bear the indignation of the Lord,
18:27because I have sinned against him,
18:29until he plead my cause
18:31and execute judgment for me.
18:34He will bring me forth to the light,
18:36and I shall behold his righteousness.
18:38Then she that is mine enemy shall see it,
18:42and shame shall cover her which said unto me,
18:45Where is the Lord thy God?
18:48Mine eyes shall behold her.
18:51Now shall she be trodden down
18:53as the mire of the streets.
18:55In the day that thy walls are to be built,
18:57in that day shall the decree be far removed.
19:01In that day also he shall come
19:03even to thee from Assyria,
19:04and from the fortified cities,
19:06and from the fortress even to the river,
19:09and from the sea to sea,
19:10and from mountain to mountain.
19:13Notwithstanding the land
19:14shall be desolate because of them
19:16that dwell therein,
19:17for the fruit of their doings.
19:20Feed thy people with thy rod,
19:22the flock of thine heritage,
19:24which dwells solitarily in the wood,
19:27in the midst of Carmel.
19:28Let them feed in Bashan and Gilead
19:31as in the days of old.
19:33According to the days of thy coming
19:35out of the land of Egypt
19:36will I show unto him marvelous things.
19:40The nations shall see and be confounded
19:42at all their might.
19:44They shall lay their hand upon their mouth,
19:47their ears shall be deaf.
19:49They shall lick the dust like a serpent,
19:51they shall move out of their holes
19:53like worms of the earth.
19:55They shall be afraid of the Lord our God,
19:58and shall fear because of thee.
20:01Who is a God like unto thee
20:03that pardoneth iniquity
20:05and passeth by the transgression
20:07of the remnant of his heritage?
20:09He retaineth not his anger forever
20:12because he delighteth in mercy.
20:15He will turn again.
20:17He will have compassion upon us.
20:19He will subdue our iniquities.
20:21And thou wilt cast all their sins
20:24into the depths of the sea.
20:26Thou wilt perform the truth of Jacob
20:28and the mercy to Abraham
20:30which thou hast sworn unto our fathers
20:34from the days of old.
