The Epistle to the Philippians, commonly known as Philippians, is the eleventh book of the New Testament and one of Paul’s most joyful and encouraging letters. Written around AD 60–62, while Paul was under house arrest in Rome, it is addressed to the church in Philippi, a Roman colony in Macedonia. Philippi was the first city in Europe where Paul established a church during his second missionary journey, making this letter deeply personal. Despite being imprisoned, Paul writes with joy, gratitude, and encouragement, urging believers to rejoice in Christ, stand firm in their faith, and live with humility and unity.

Paul begins by thanking the Philippians for their generosity, as they had supported him financially in his ministry. He expresses his deep love for them, praying that their love, knowledge, and discernment would grow. Even though he is in chains, Paul sees his imprisonment as an opportunity to advance the gospel, as even the Roman guards are hearing about Christ. He reminds the Philippians that, regardless of circumstances, the gospel cannot be stopped, and that to live is Christ, and to die is gain—a powerful declaration of his complete devotion to Jesus.

One of the central themes of Philippians is humility and unity in Christ. Paul urges the believers to live in harmony, putting others before themselves, and he points to Jesus as the ultimate example of humility. In a famous passage known as the Christ Hymn, Paul describes how Jesus, though fully God, humbled Himself by becoming human, taking the form of a servant, and obediently dying on the cross. Because of this, God has exalted Him above all names, and every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. This passage beautifully captures both Jesus’ humility and His divine glory.

Paul also encourages the Philippians to work out their salvation with fear and trembling, not as a way of earning salvation but as a response to God’s work within them. He warns against grumbling, urging them to shine like stars in a dark world by living blamelessly. He speaks highly of Timothy and Epaphroditus, two faithful servants of Christ, showing the importance of serving others with dedication and love.

Another key theme is pressing forward in faith. Paul shares his personal testimony, acknowledging that he has not yet attained perfection but is pressing on toward the goal—to know Christ fully.

00:00The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Philippians
00:03Chapter 1
00:05Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are
00:13at Philippi with the bishops and deacons, grace be unto you and peace from God our Father
00:20and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:23I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine, for you all
00:29making request with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now,
00:35being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform
00:41it until the day of Jesus Christ, even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because
00:48I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my bonds and in the defense and confirmation
00:54of the gospel, ye all are partakers of my grace.
00:59For God is my record, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ.
01:06And this I pray that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment,
01:13that ye may approve things that are excellent, that ye may be sincere and without offense till
01:19the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ
01:25unto the glory and praise of God.
01:28But I would you should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have
01:33fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel, so that my bonds in Christ are manifest
01:39in all the palace and in all other places, and many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident
01:46by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
01:52Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife, and some also of good will.
02:00The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds, but
02:07the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defense of the gospel.
02:12What then?
02:14Notwithstanding every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached, and I therein
02:21do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.
02:24For I know that this shall turn to my salvation through your prayer and the supply of the Spirit
02:31of Jesus Christ, according to my earnest expectation and my hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed,
02:39but that with all boldness as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether
02:47it be by life or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.
02:57But if I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labor, yet what I shall choose I wot not.
03:03For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ, which
03:10is far better. Nevertheless to abide in the flesh is more needful for you. And having this
03:16confidence, I know that I shall abide and continue with you all for your furtherance and joy
03:23of faith. That your rejoicing may be more abundant in Jesus Christ for me by my coming
03:29to you again. Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ, that whether I come and
03:37see you or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind
03:45striving together for the faith of the gospel. And in nothing terrified by your adversaries, which is to
03:52them an evident token of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that of God. For unto you it is
04:01given, in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake, having the
04:09same conflict which ye saw in me, and now hear to be in me.
04:13If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the
04:26Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, fulfill ye my joy, that ye be like-minded, having the same love,
04:35being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory. But in lowliness of
04:43mind, let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every
04:50man also on the things of others. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, who being
05:00in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, but made himself of no reputation,
05:07and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in
05:15fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
05:23Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name,
05:30that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth,
05:38and things under the earth, and that every tongue should confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord,
05:46to the glory of God the Father. Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my
05:52presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
06:01For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without
06:08murmurings and disputings, that ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God without rebuke in the
06:15midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world, holding forth the
06:22word of life, that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither labored in vain.
06:31Yea, and if I be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy and rejoice with you all.
06:40For the same cause also do ye joy and rejoice with me. But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send
06:48Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort when I know your state. For I have
06:57no man like-minded who will naturally care for your state. For all seek their own, not the things which
07:04are Jesus Christ's. But ye know the proof of him, that as a son with a father, he hath served with me
07:12in the gospel. Him therefore I hope to send presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me.
07:20But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly. Yet I supposed it necessary to send
07:28to you Epaphroditus, my brother and companion in labor, and fellow-soldier, but your messenger,
07:36and he that ministered to my wants. For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because
07:43that ye had heard that he had been sick. For indeed he was sick nigh of death, but God had mercy on him,
07:51and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. I sent him therefore the more
08:00carefully, that when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.
08:07Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness, and hold such in reputation, because for the work
08:14of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
08:22Chapter 3
08:24Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed,
08:32is not grievous, but for you it is safe. Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers,
08:39beware of the concision. For we are the circumcision which worship God in the Spirit,
08:45and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.
08:50Though I might also have confidence in the flesh, if any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he
08:57might trust in the flesh, I more, circumcise the eighth day of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of
09:04Benjamin, and Hebrew of the Hebrews, as touching the law a Pharisee. Concerning zeal, persecuting the
09:12church, touching the righteousness which is in the law, blame us. But what things were gained to me,
09:18those I counted loss for Christ. They doubtless and I count all things, but loss for the excellency
09:26of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things,
09:32and do count them but dung that I may win Christ and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness
09:39which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of
09:45God by faith, that I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his
09:53sufferings, being made conformable unto his death, if by any means I might attain unto the resurrection
10:00of the dead. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect, but I follow after,
10:08if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. Brethren, I count not
10:16myself to have apprehended, but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and
10:23reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of a high
10:30calling of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded, and if in
10:38anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. Nevertheless, whereto we have
10:45already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us mind the same thing. Brethren, be followers
10:53together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an example. For many walk, of whom I
11:01have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ,
11:08whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame,
11:14who mind earthly things. For our conversation is in heaven, from whence also we look for the Saviour,
11:23the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious
11:30body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
11:39Chapter 4
11:40Therefore, my brethren, dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord,
11:49my dearly beloved. I beseech you, Odeus, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind
11:57in the Lord. And I entreat thee also, true yoke fellow, help those women which labored with me in the
12:04gospel with Clement also, and with other my fellow laborers, whose names are in the book of life.
12:12Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men.
12:20The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
12:28thanksgiving, let your request be made known unto God. And the peace of God which passeth all
12:35understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
12:39Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things
12:48are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good
12:56report, if there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on these things. Those things which
13:05ye have both learned and received, and heard and seen in me, do, and the God of peace shall be with
13:12you. But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again,
13:19wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity. Not that I speak in respect of want,
13:26for I have learned in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased,
13:34and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be
13:41hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me.
13:51Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction. Now ye Philippians
13:58know also, that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church communicated
14:06with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only. For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and
14:14again unto my necessity. Not because I desire a gift, but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.
14:23But I have all and abound. I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were
14:31sent from you, and odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well-pleasing to God.
14:39But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches, in glory by Christ Jesus.
14:45Now unto God and our Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
14:53Salute every saint in Christ Jesus. The brethren which are with me greet you. All the saints salute
15:01you, chiefly they that are of Caesar's household. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
