The Epistle to the Colossians, commonly known as Colossians, is the twelfth book of the New Testament and one of Paul’s prison letters, written around AD 60–62 while he was under house arrest in Rome. It was addressed to the church in Colossae, a city in Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey), which Paul had never visited but was likely founded by Epaphras, one of Paul’s co-workers. Paul wrote this letter to correct false teachings that were influencing the Colossian church, emphasizing the supremacy of Christ, the fullness of salvation in Him, and the need to reject human traditions and philosophies that distort the gospel.

Paul begins the letter with thanksgiving and prayer, commending the Colossians for their faith in Christ, love for one another, and hope in the gospel. He reminds them that they have been rescued from the kingdom of darkness and brought into the kingdom of Christ, who is not only their Savior but also the image of the invisible God, the Creator of all things, and the head of the Church. This passage, often called the Christ Hymn, powerfully declares Jesus’ preeminence over all creation and His role as the reconciler of all things through His death on the cross.

One of the central themes of Colossians is the sufficiency and supremacy of Christ. Paul warns against false teachings that promote human philosophy, legalism, and mysticism, emphasizing that believers do not need additional spiritual experiences, rules, or traditions to be saved—they are already complete in Christ. He specifically challenges false teachings that mix Jewish legalism, asceticism, and worship of angels, urging the Colossians not to be deceived by hollow and deceptive philosophy.

Paul explains that through Christ’s death and resurrection, believers have been made alive, forgiven of all sins, and freed from the requirements of the Law. Baptism symbolizes this transformation, as they have been buried with Christ and raised to new life in Him. Since they have died to the world’s ways, they should set their minds on things above, focusing on Christ, who is their life.

The second half of the letter shifts to practical Christian living. Paul urges the Colossians to put off their old sinful nature, including anger, malice, slander, and impurity, and to put on the new self, characterized by compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and love. He calls them to let the peace of Christ rule in their hearts and let the word of Christ dwell richly among them.

00:00The Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Colossians, Chapter 1
00:05Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother, to the
00:13saints and faithful brethren in Christ which are at Colossae, grace be unto you and peace
00:20from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:24We give thanks to God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,
00:32since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love which ye have to all the saints,
00:38for the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the
00:45truth of the gospel, which is come unto you as it is in all the world, and bringeth forth
00:52fruit as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God
00:59in truth.
01:01As ye also learned of Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is for you a faithful minister
01:08of Christ, who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit.
01:14For this cause we also, since the day we heard of it, do not cease to pray for you, and to
01:21desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.
01:29That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work,
01:36and increasing in the knowledge of God, strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power,
01:45unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness, giving thanks unto the Father which hath made
01:52us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light, who hath delivered us
01:59from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son, in whom
02:06we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins, who is the image of
02:14the invisible God, the firstborn of every creature.
02:19For by him were all things created, that are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and
02:26invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers.
02:34All things were created by him and for him.
02:38And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
02:44And he is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the
02:50dead, that in all things he might have the preeminence.
02:55For it pleased the Father, that in him should all fullness dwell.
03:02And having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto
03:08himself, by him I say, whether they be things in earth or things in heaven.
03:16And you that were some time alienated, and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath
03:23he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and
03:31unreprovable in his sight.
03:34If ye continue in the faith, grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel
03:41which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven.
03:47Whereof I, Paul, am made a minister, who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill
03:55up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh, for his body's sake,
04:02which is the church.
04:03Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God, which is given to
04:11me for you, to fulfill the word of God.
04:15Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest
04:23to his saints, to whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery
04:30among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory, whom we preach, warning every
04:38man, and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ
04:45Jesus, whereunto I also labor, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.
04:56Chapter 2
04:57For I would have that ye knew what great conflict I have for you, and for them at Laodicea,
05:06and for as many as have not seen my face in the flesh, that their hearts might be comforted,
05:13being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the
05:21acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ, in whom are hid
05:28all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
05:32And this I say, lest any man should beguile you with enticing words.
05:36For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the Spirit, joying and beholding
05:44your order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.
05:49As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him, rooted and built
05:58up in him, and established in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with
06:05thanksgiving, beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the
06:12tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
06:18For in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, and ye are complete in him, which
06:27is the head of all principality and power, in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision
06:36made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision
06:43of Christ, buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith
06:51of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
06:57And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with
07:04him, having forgiven you all trespasses, blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against
07:13us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, mailing it to his cross. And having spoiled
07:22principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it. Let no man
07:29therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day, or of the new moon, or of the
07:36Sabbath days, which are a shadow of things to come, but the body is of Christ. Let no man beguile you of
07:45your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels, intruding into those things which he
07:53hath not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, and not holding the head from which all the body,
08:01by joints and bands having nourishment ministered, and knit together, increaseth with the increase of
08:10God. Wherefore, if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why as though living in
08:18the world are ye subject to ordinances, touch not, taste not, handle not, which all are to perish with
08:27a using, after the commandments and doctrines of men, which things have indeed a show of wisdom
08:34in will-worship and humility and neglecting of the body, not in any honour to the satisfying
08:42of the flesh.
08:45Chapter 3 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ
08:54sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
09:03For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life shall appear,
09:12then shall ye also appear with him in glory. Mortify therefore your members which are up in
09:19the earth. Fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness,
09:28which is idolatry. For which things sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience. In the
09:36which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these. Anger, wrath,
09:46malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing
09:55that ye have put off the old man with his deeds, and have put on the new man, which is renewed
10:02in knowledge after the image of him that created him. Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision
10:10nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free. But Christ is all, and in all. Put on therefore,
10:21as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness,
10:30longsuffering, longsuffering, forbearing one another, and forgiving one another. If any man
10:36have a quarrel against any, even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things,
10:46put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts,
10:54to the which also ye are called in one body, and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell
11:02in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns
11:09and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word
11:17or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him.
11:26Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives,
11:35and be not bitter against them. Children, obey your parents in all things, for this is well-pleasing
11:43unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Servants,
11:51obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eye-service, as men-pleasers,
11:59but in singleness of heart, fearing God. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily as to the Lord,
12:07and not unto men. Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance,
12:14for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done,
12:22and there is no respect of persons. Chapter 4
12:28Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal, knowing that ye also have a master in heaven.
12:37Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving, withal praying also for us,
12:45that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ for which I am also
12:52in bonds, that I may make it manifest as I ought to speak. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without,
13:01redeeming the time. Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how
13:09ye ought to answer every man. All my state shall Tychica declare unto you, who is a beloved brother,
13:17and a faithful minister, and fellow-servant in the Lord, whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose,
13:25that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts, with Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother,
13:33who is one of you. They shall make known unto you all things which are done here. Aristarchus,
13:40my fellow-prisoner, saluteth you, and Marcus, sister's son to Barnabas, touching whom ye received
13:48commandments, if he come unto you, receive him. And Jesus, which is called Justice, who are of the
13:55circumcision. These only are my fellow-workers under the kingdom of God, which have been a comfort unto
14:03me. Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always laboring fervently
14:11for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God. For I bear him
14:19record that he hath a great zeal for you, and them that are in Laodicea, and them in Hierapolis.
14:27Luke, the beloved physician, and Demas greet you. Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea,
14:34and Nymphos, and the church which is in his house. And when this epistle is read among you,
14:40cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans, and that ye likewise read the epistle
14:47from Laodicea. And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord,
14:56that thou fulfill it. The salutation by the hand of me, Paul. Remember my bonds. Grace be with you. Amen.
