The Second Epistle to the Thessalonians, commonly known as 2 Thessalonians, is the fourteenth book of the New Testament and one of Paul’s later letters written around AD 50–51. It was addressed to the church in Thessalonica, a young Christian community that Paul had established during his second missionary journey. This letter was written shortly after 1 Thessalonians to address further concerns raised by the Thessalonians regarding the second coming of Christ and to correct misunderstandings that had emerged since Paul’s first letter.

Paul opens the letter by thanking God for the faith, love, and endurance of the Thessalonian believers, especially in the midst of persecution and suffering. He commends them for their steadfastness in faith and emphasizes that their trials and persecutions are a sign of their worthiness for the Kingdom of God. Paul reassures them that God will bring justice, punishing those who are causing them suffering and rewarding those who are faithful.

A central theme of 2 Thessalonians is clarifying the doctrine of Christ’s second coming. Some Thessalonians had been misled into believing that the Day of the Lord had already come, likely due to false teachings or confusion. Paul corrects this misunderstanding, stating that the return of Christ will not happen until certain events take place first. He explains that before Christ’s return, a rebellion must occur and the “man of lawlessness” (the Antichrist) must be revealed. This figure will exalt himself above all that is called God and will deceive many, leading to a time of great apostasy.

Paul also emphasizes that the return of Christ will be marked by His glorious revelation and will bring retribution and justice for the wicked. The righteous will be rewarded with eternal rest, and Christ will be glorified in those who believe. He reminds the Thessalonians to remain steadfast, knowing that Christ’s return will bring ultimate victory and vindication.

In the latter part of the letter, Paul addresses the issue of idleness. Some believers had ceased working, possibly because they were waiting for Christ’s imminent return and believed that there was no need for earthly labor.

00:00The Second Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians
00:04Chapter 1
00:06Paul and Silvanus and Timotheus, under the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father
00:13and the Lord Jesus Christ, grace unto you and peace from God our Father and the Lord
00:20Jesus Christ.
00:21We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your
00:27faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other
00:32aboundeth, so that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and
00:38faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure, which is a manifest token
00:45of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God,
00:50for which ye also suffer, seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to
00:58them that trouble you.
00:59And to you who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven
01:05with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God and that
01:13obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, who shall be punished with everlasting destruction
01:20from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his power, when he shall come to be glorified
01:26in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe, because our testimony among you
01:33is believed in that day.
01:35Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling,
01:42and fulfill all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power, that the name
01:49of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of
01:56our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
02:02Chapter 2
02:03Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering
02:09together unto him, that he be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word,
02:18nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
02:23Let no man deceive you by any means, for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away
02:31first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition, who opposeth and exalteth himself
02:39above all that is called God, or that is worshipped, so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God,
02:47showing himself that he is God.
02:50Remember ye not, that when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
02:54And now ye know what withholdeth, that he might be revealed in his time.
03:00For the mystery of iniquity doth already work, only he who now letteth will let, until he be
03:07taken out of the way.
03:09And then shall that wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his
03:14mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.
03:18Even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying
03:25wonders, and with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish, because they received not
03:33the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
03:37And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie, that
03:44they all might be damned who believe not in the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
03:50But we are bound to give thanks only to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because
03:56God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the spirit and belief
04:04of the truth, whereunto he called you by our gospel to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord
04:11Jesus Christ.
04:13Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether
04:19by word or our epistle.
04:22Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us and hath
04:29given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts, and establish
04:37you in every good word and work.
04:41Chapter 3 Finally, brethren, pray for us that the word
04:47of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified even as it is with you, and that we may be
04:53delivered from unreasonable and wicked men, for all men have not faith.
04:59But the Lord is faithful, who shall stab you and keep you from evil.
05:04And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things
05:11which we command you.
05:13And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting for Christ.
05:20Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves
05:26from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which he received
05:32of us.
05:33For yourselves know how ye ought to follow us, for we behaved not ourselves disorderly among
05:40you.
05:41Neither did we eat any man's bread for naught, but wrought with labor and travail night and
05:47day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you.
05:51Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us.
05:59For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should
06:06he eat.
06:07For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are
06:13busybodies.
06:14Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness
06:21they work, and eat their own bread.
06:25But ye, brethren, be not weary in well-doing.
06:28And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him,
06:36that he may be ashamed.
06:38Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.
06:42Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always, by all means.
06:49The Lord be with you all.
06:51The salutation of Paul with mine own hand, which is the token in every epistle, so I write.
06:59The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
