Esther, the seventeenth book of the Bible, is a powerful story of divine providence, courage, and deliverance. Set during the Persian Empire, it recounts how a Jewish woman named Esther becomes queen and, through bold faith, saves her people from destruction.
The book unfolds as King Ahasuerus (Xerxes I) of Persia selects Esther, an orphaned Jewish girl, as his new queen, unaware of her heritage. Meanwhile, Haman, a high-ranking official, plots to annihilate the Jewish people after a conflict with Esther’s cousin, Mordecai. When the decree of destruction is issued, Mordecai urges Esther to risk her life by approaching the king, declaring the famous words: “Who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14).
With wisdom and courage, Esther intercedes for her people, revealing Haman’s wicked scheme. In a dramatic reversal, Haman is executed, Mordecai is honored, and the Jews are granted the right to defend themselves, leading to their victory over their enemies. The book concludes with the establishment of the Feast of Purim, a celebration of God’s unseen hand in protecting His people.
Though God’s name is never explicitly mentioned, His providence is evident throughout the story, demonstrating that He is always at work behind the scenes. Esther teaches the importance of faith, boldness, and trusting in God’s plan, even when He seems hidden.
