🔥 On GET UP, Brian Windhorst delivers key updates affecting three NBA heavyweights:

Devin Booker’s contract extension is imminent, with the Phoenix Suns finalizing a new long-term deal—securing their All-NBA guard ([turn0search8], [turn0search14]).

Nikola Jokic is officially pausing extension talks until summer 2026, keeping his options open for salary adjustments and maintaining leverage ([turn0news20], [turn0search6]).

LeBron James, despite opting into his $52.6 million deal, is no longer the focal point (‘center’) of the Lakers, with the team proactively shifting focus toward building around Luka Dončić ([turn0search7], [turn0news25]).

Windhorst explains the implications: how these moves affect team dynamics, cap strategy, and competitive positioning in the upcoming NBA season.

00:00We're back on Get Up and it's time for a Windy Watch.
00:04Brian Windhorst start us off with the big news from last night out of Phoenix.
00:10Now, Devin Booker signs a two-year extension worth more than $140 million.
00:15Now, they've been building towards this for months.
00:18The Suns really decided they were going to do this a while ago.
00:21It's sort of independent of their other business.
00:23And they've been involving Booker in their decision-making this offseason,
00:26including their coaching search and their decision to trade Kevin Durant.
00:31It wasn't like Booker had sign-off, but he was participating in that process,
00:35which led to this, which will keep him under contract through 2030.
00:40All right.
00:40Well, what about Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets?
00:43What's going on with them?
00:45Ah, no deal there, Graz.
00:47So the Nuggets offered Jokic a two-year contract extension.
00:51Now, he's got three years left on his deal,
00:53two of which are guaranteed he can opt out of the third.
00:57He passed on this deal.
00:59Now, this wasn't a stunner because if he waits until next summer,
01:04he can add an additional year and a total of $77 million to the guarantee.
01:10So even the Nuggets owner, Josh Kroenke, said he expected Jokic to turn it down.
01:14That said, never great when your franchise player says no to an extension.
01:19Not great.
01:19Tim McMahon, what did you make of this development in Denver?
01:23Yeah, howdy, Dan.
01:26I looked at this and said, you know what?
01:28I think that Nikola Jokic is good at math and that he likes money.
01:32As Wendy said, that's $77 million that he can add on to the deal, that extra year.
01:37Now, again, though, it's not preferable not to have your franchise player locked up long term.
01:43And there certainly are other teams that are going to be lined up,
01:45positioning themselves for the slim chance, the heave that Joker likes to take,
01:51always from the backcourt, that Joker might be available.
01:53In that summer of 27, one of those teams, obviously, is the Los Angeles Lakers,
01:58who employs his buddy, Luka Doncic, will have cap space in 27
02:02and managed to get Wilt and Kareem and Shaq.
02:05So, you know, why wouldn't they think they can get Nikola Jokic
02:08while he's still the best big man in the league?
02:11Boy, that's fun.
02:12We'll keep an eye on that, obviously, over the next whatever couple of years.
02:16But in the meantime, Wendy, get up, show rules do dictate that I ask you about LeBron James and the Lakers.
02:21What's going on there?
02:24There is no update, Dan.
02:26LeBron is continuing to watch, but he is still under contract for $53 million,
02:31which makes no matter what anything is said, both verbally or non-verbally,
02:36his likelihood of remaining a Laker.
02:38I can't emphasize what I'm about to say enough.
02:41Regardless of who they sign at center, regardless of what LeBron does with his option,
02:46regardless of any backup signings they make,
02:49the number one most important thing for the Lakers this offseason
02:52is getting Luka Doncic into a contract extension,
02:57which they can do after August 2nd.
02:59And I'm going to sound this warning now.
03:02He's probably not going to sign August 2nd.
03:04He's going to be playing with the Slovenian national team until mid-September,
03:07and he may not entertain that even issue until he comes back to the U.S. at that time.
03:12So it could be a long wait, but make no mistake,
03:15this offseason is not about LeBron for the Lakers.
03:18It is about Luka.
03:19Tim, what do you make of what's going on in L.A.?
03:21Yeah, look, LeBron and the Lakers are in this weird limbo
03:26that I would love to be in a $53 million limbo.
03:29All you have to do is be one of the best players of all time near the end of his career.
03:34With a co-star that they're trying to reset everything around and build around long-term.
03:40But the question I hear about LeBron most often around the league is,
03:43is he trying to bully his way to a buyout from the Lakers?
03:48And that's always quickly followed by,
03:50there's no way the Lakers could ever let that happen, right?
03:53But my guess is that he won't exactly be thrilled,
03:58but he will be there for training camp,
04:00and he will be in a Lakers uniform this season.
04:02Yeah, I have one more for you, Tim.
04:04Cooper Flagg making his NBA Summer League debut tonight
04:08against Bronny James and the Lakers.
04:10Obviously top draft pick.
04:11High hopes there.
04:13According to Vivid Seats, average ticket prices are $223,
04:16cheapest at $85, courtside $3,000.
04:19So people are excited.
04:21Tim, is it fair to expect Cooper Flagg to be a star right away?
04:24It's certainly not fair to pay $3,000 to watch the highest level of AAU basketball,
04:31which is what Summer League is.
04:33A star eventually?
04:34Yes, that's absolutely fair.
04:36Immediately, that's asking an awful lot out of an 18-year-old.
04:41The best rookie in the class, I think that's fair to expect,
04:44but an 18-year-old to impact winning like a superstar does?
04:48That's putting a ton of pressure on this kid.
04:52All right, well, much more NBA as we roll along here this morning on Get Up.
04:58Thursday to see the number one pick, Cooper Flagg, make his Summer League debut.
05:02That'll be out in Vegas.
05:03But earlier today, he spoke at Mavs practice.
05:06I think, you know, Coach Shire trusted me a lot last year,
05:09and I handled it a lot.
05:10You know, I didn't bring it up with some,
05:11but on the half court, I handled it a lot and, you know,
05:13set up a lot of different actions.
05:14So, I think it's something I can do at a high level,
05:18so I'm excited to just, you know, experiment and do some new things.
05:21He's experimenting.
05:22He's doing some new things.
05:23He's keeping the goatee.
05:24Tim, how do you see Flagg adapting with the Mavs here?
05:28Well, listen, Jason Kidd's going to treat Cooper Flagg a lot like he did
05:32Giannis Antetokounmpo when J. Kidd got to Milwaukee
05:35and put the ball in Giannis' hands and basically said,
05:37spread your wings, show us what you can do,
05:40and the things you can't do, you know, let's jump over those hurdles.
05:44Let's get past those things.
05:45Let's test you and really grow.
05:49And it's different circumstances.
05:51That Milwaukee team was young.
05:53They were in a rebuild where Cooper Flagg obviously joins a very veteran,
05:57heavy Dallas Mavericks team, a team with some future Hall of Famers.
06:01Of course, one of those future Hall of Famers, Kyrie Irving,
06:04recovering from a torn ACL.
06:06He's not going to play for at least the first half of the season.
06:09So there is a void in terms of facilitating playmaking.
06:13Jason Kidd wants to really give Cooper Flagg a chance to prove that he can help fill that void,
06:18if not be the primary guy as their playmaker from the get-go.
06:22And that's really what this summer league is going to be about for Cooper Flagg and the Mavericks.
06:26We get to see Cooper on Thursday in Las Vegas right here on ESPN,
06:31taking on the Los Angeles Lakers and Bronny James.
06:34It may just be July, Tim, but there is plenty of action to catch up on.
06:37So let's check out NBA Today's Big Three.
06:39Our high...
06:40...branch out a little bit, so they're a little bit harder to play in a playoff series.
06:43And one small thing, but I find it fascinating, he has experienced coaching a lefty point guard, right?
06:49You're coming from De'Aaron, coaching De'Aaron Fox, and now you get to coach Jalen Brunson.
06:54I'm curious, Monica, to see how that plays out on the floor.
06:56Yeah, I think that's going to be fantastic.
06:58Jalen is so versatile, though, and I think he shoots with his right hand, though,
07:01although he is left-hand dominant.
07:02Look, not only the basketball part of it, but I think the IQ and the team elements of it all, right?
07:09In terms of being a manager of personalities, that's something that I think is also going to be hugely important to this group.
07:14Jalen Brunson, Carl Anthony Towns, those guys are pretty set in who they are.
07:17It's the rest of that roster.
07:18The creativity extends to me beyond just the basketball of it all,
07:21but creating a true sense of buy-in up and down the roster.
07:23They do have the best odds to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder,
07:26so everyone has high expectations of the New York Knicks.
07:29My goodness.
07:31Everybody has high expectations of the New York Knicks here.
07:34Many of us, though, we've been away for the holiday, right?
07:36Some barbecue, maybe a little bit of pool time, but NBA teams, they were still bringing the fireworks, right?
07:42Teams have been active here in Los Angeles.
07:44Shams reported early yesterday that the Clippers, the Jazz, and the Heat agreed to a trade.
07:49It sends Norm Powell to Miami, John Collins to the Clippers,
07:52and then Kevin Love, Kyle Anderson, and a 2027 Clippers second-round pick all to Utah.
07:59Powell, remember, he was a borderline all-star.
08:00He averaged a career high just under 22 points a game last season,
08:04and this got some reaction from Kevin Love, who's become the king of social media, by the way.
08:09I was waiting for what he was going to be.
08:11That's funny.
08:11But this is how we weighed in.
08:12He said, I never thought it'd be a math problem.
08:14Welcome to the NBA.
08:16I guess welcome to the NBA indeed, Brian.
08:18What's your biggest takeaway when you're looking at this three-team deal?
08:22Well, the reason Kevin said that, just so you know,
08:24is because he had to be included in this deal for salary purposes,
08:27and the Heat are thrilled with what they got in this deal.
08:31They had been looking for a way to upgrade the talent on their roster
08:35and to be able to basically get John Collins from the Clipper, from the Jazz,
08:41and then flip him to the Clippers for Norm Powell.
08:43That is a big upgrade to their backcourt.
08:45Norm Powell is coming off of a career season.
08:48His steady improvement in the mid-part of his career has been terrific.
08:52This is definitely the type of move that in an Eastern Conference
08:55that frankly is banged up and is devoid of talent,
08:59this kind of talent influx is huge for the Heat.
09:02And the Clippers make a big move here.
09:04They have added a lot to their frontcourt over the last two weeks,
09:07signing Brooke Lopez to be a bit of Zubac's backup,
09:11and now adding John Collins, a front-line power forward,
09:14in the last year of his contract.
09:16You assume he's going to be motivated to have a big season.
09:19Man, Wendy, repost, retweet, heavy on the,
09:22what does this mean for the Miami Heat, y'all?
09:24Like, when I saw this going down, I'm like, huh?
09:26So I just go through this roster tentatively, right?
09:28Like, Norman Powell, I am in on that dude.
09:30I don't think last year was a fluke.
09:32Certainly it could be one of his career years,
09:34but I think he's in place to be able to duplicate that sort of productivity
09:37the next couple of seasons.
09:39But if you give me Adebayo, Powell, Hero, Wiggins, and Ware,
09:42Kalel Ware, I still think is a little bit of a gem in the league
09:44in terms of folks maybe not knowing how dynamic he is at seven foot.
09:47But in the East, that is sort of open outside of the odds
09:51that you just mentioned for the New York Knicks.
09:52Like, that's not a bad starting lineup.
09:54You're sprinkling a little bit of heat culture, if I may.
09:57And I don't know.
09:58You kind of got to see what can happen down in South Beach.
10:00The backcourt is a little crowded.
10:01I'm curious if they're done making moves here.
10:04But since we're in Los Angeles and Clippers fans are curious,
10:08they desperately needed a power forward.
10:10That's something that last season, you're kind of looking around
10:12and saying, all right, Kawhi cannot be taken on all of these minutes, right?
10:15Ramona, are they done?
10:16How are they feeling if the East is wide open, the West is crowded?
10:19Well, I don't think a team as smart as the Clippers front office
10:23would leave themselves bare in the starting shooting guard position
10:26if they didn't have a pretty good feeling that there might be
10:29a pretty good shooting guard becoming available via the buyout market
10:33fairly soon, and that's Bradley Beal.
10:35So I think you should regard the Clippers as one of the favorites
10:37for Bradley Beal if he is indeed bought out by the Phoenix Suns,
10:41and that comes to fruition as we've all been expecting for a while here.
10:44And if you're Brad Beal and you look up and you go,
10:47wow, I can play next to James Harden and stand out there and shoot threes,
10:52and I don't have to be the point guard anymore,
10:54I think that's a great fit for him.
10:56I know the Warriors have some interest in Beal.
10:58There's a lot of other teams that would have interest in him,
10:59but the Clippers have done a good job.
11:01It hurts them to lose Norman Powell.
11:03Right.
11:03I know it really hurt them to let go of him,
11:06but he was eligible for an extension.
11:08They have a well-chronicled discipline about not extending people beyond next year.
11:12They're going to have all this cap space.
11:13I don't know what they're going to do with it,
11:15but they are sticking to their plan,
11:17and so that's why they were trading Norman Powell and not extending.
11:19Wait.
