00:00Year 23 for number 23. There's been so much talk, Ramona Bryan, about the Lakers the last couple of days for a variety of different reasons, but it feels like the dominant headline has been, is LeBron James going to stay in Los Angeles? That's not something that I thought we were going to be talking about a couple of weeks ago. And it sort of maybe distracted from a bigger question that I've had. We're talking about a guy who's going to be 41 in December. How much longer is this ride, Ramona, going to last?
00:27Look, you hear this from people around the league that he wants to play two, three more years. But until he says it, until he's the one who says, I don't want to put my body through what I have to put my body through to be as good as I am. This man was a top 15 player in the league last year. He was still, and I had no qualms voting for him on my All-NBA team last year. He's still that good. So I know he's 41, but I don't think it's his last year.
00:52But the fact that the Lakers did not discuss a one-and-one or a two-and-one or contracts beyond this year with him, they just let him sit back and pick up his option or decline his option. That tells you a lot. That means that it's not in his control with the Los Angeles Lakers. That was a statement, even though they didn't make a statement.
01:13For the first time in 23 years, he's not the franchise player. From the day he walked into the NBA, he's been the franchise player. Even in Miami, when Dwayne Wade was the incumbent star, you can ask UD, LeBron was the franchise player.
01:24So this is a transition for him. It doesn't mean that he won't have a spectacular season, and it doesn't mean that he has any lower standards.
01:31He has the opportunity to play a great season alongside Luka Doncic, and the Lakers have an opportunity to try to surround them with talent.
01:38And that is what he is doing. From what I am told, LeBron is not stressed at all right now.
01:42He is simply watching and seeing what the Lakers are doing. And that is what he will continue to do as he goes through the summer.
01:48The Lakers are the ones who have got to figure out how to make Luka Doncic feel comfortable about their future.
01:54Which is what they've got to sell to him in one month, one month from tomorrow.
01:58And so, while there's a lot of focus on LeBron, I don't think the Lakers are thinking that much about him.
02:03I think they're thinking about how do we get a center, how do we get some perimeter defense, and what are we going to say to Luka when we go meet with him and offer him a contract extension?
02:10Well, particularly because the team just down the road was able to go out and get a center that the Los Angeles Lakers had their eye on here.
02:18So let's go from the Lakers to the Clippers. They shared the same arena for 25 years.
02:22All until the Clippers opened up into a dome this season.
02:26It's just a six-mile trip on the 110, a little under five miles to the 105, and that's where we have Bobby Marks.
02:36Bobby, what have the Clippers done to bolster their roster so far this offseason?
02:41Well, they brought James Harden back to start. Two years, $81 million.
02:45The second year is partially guaranteed here.
02:48Here are two big decisions that they brought back. Nick Batum on a two-year contract, Brooke Lopez on a two-year, $18 million contract.
02:56Batum, Lopez, and Harden, they all have something in common.
03:00What they have in common is that their contract is not guaranteed for next year.
03:05The Clippers are maximizing potential max cap space in the summer of 2026.
03:11Here's some questions for them.
03:12The continuity factor, 12 players return. It's okay to bring back your same roster.
03:17They did add Brooke Lopez, as we talked about.
03:20What about Norman? Norman Powell is extension eligible.
03:23Four for 128. We'll certainly keep an eye on that.
03:26And as I mentioned, that flexibility part could have a max spot.
03:30They're not the only team, though, Malika.
03:32This summer, we had Brooklyn as the only team that has cap space.
03:35We're projecting nearly half of the NBA next summer could have significant cap space.
03:42Ooh, so that means next summer we could see some serious movement.
03:45That will be interesting to follow.
03:47But since we're sitting here in Los Angeles,
03:48Legs, let's keep this theme going as we say hello to Om Young-Masuk,
03:51who covers the Los Angeles Clippers for us.
03:54Do you think that the Los Angeles Lakers or the Clippers,
03:56the Clippers looked like a better team in the postseason last year.
04:01Are they the better team heading into this next season?
04:04I like the Clippers better.
04:06And look, Luka Doncic could flip this entire script,
04:08depending on how he looks at the start of the year
04:10and the chemistry with LeBron James.
04:11But right now, they don't have that chemistry.
04:13Clippers do.
04:14They're basically running it back.
04:15You had Norman Powell had a career year.
04:17James Harden had an all-league season.
04:20Zubac, to me, might be the most underrated player in the NBA.
04:23And now you go out and you have Brooke Lopez as another backline anchor,
04:27defensively and somebody that is going to be deadly
04:30in the 1-5 pick-and-pop game with James Harden.
04:33So Brooke Lopez can still do that.
04:35I like the Clippers better.
04:36I just think the way they're positioned, the way they know each other,
04:40and coming off a year with 50 wins and running it back
04:43with everybody really understanding their role and adding depth,
04:46I like the Clippers better as we go into the season.
04:48We were talking about Philadelphia earlier in the show
04:50and trying to maximize Joel Embiid.
04:53The Clippers have figured out, knocking on some wood here,
04:57how to be able to get the best out of Kawhi Leonard.
05:00We had questions about Kawhi in previous years.
05:03Those questions don't exist anymore.
05:05How are they feeling about what they've built this offseason?
05:07I thought there was a good little interesting nugget Lawrence Frank gave
05:10the other night after the draft.
05:12He said Kawhi Leonard had trained all the way through the end of the NBA Finals
05:16to get his body re-acclimated to playing that deep in the playoffs,
05:20and this is going to be the first offseason in a long time
05:23where he can just focus on improving his game and working out, not rehabbing.
05:27That is very important to me.
05:29I think last year we saw in the playoffs he looked very good in the beginning.
05:33He couldn't, you know, it's going to be hard for him to maintain that level
05:35coming off the injury he was, but now looking forward,
05:38they feel that he can continue training the way he was before,
05:40and I like the pieces they put around him.
05:42They arguably have perhaps maybe one of the best front lines in the league.
05:46Remember, this is a team that took Denver to seven games.
05:49Now you add Brooke Lopez, who, by the way, texted me.
05:51I said, are you going to go to Disneyland a lot?
05:53And he said, that has to be the plan.
05:55I think I'll live in Adventureland Treehouse.
05:57Oh, the Adventureland Treehouse.
05:59I hear the mortgage rates in the Adventureland Treehouse are pretty high, actually.
06:03UD, though, making all of these moves, the Clippers,
06:05we talk about the West as being Oklahoma City, obviously, is leading the pack.
06:09You talk about Houston.
06:10We've been really intrigued by Denver.
06:11I don't think we can forget about the Clippers here.
06:13No, you cannot forget about the Clippers, and not just the players that they have,
06:16because they have everything that you need to contend.
06:18You have centers.
06:19You have wing defenders.
06:20You have scorers.
06:21You have Norm Powell.
06:21You have James Harden, who's a hell of a playmaker, can also still score the ball for you.
06:26You have a healthy Kawhi Leonard, hopefully.
06:28But I look at that coaching staff, and I look at Lawrence Frank, and I look at Van Gundy.
06:32Second year for Van Gundy.
06:33Yeah, and I look at, excuse me, Ty Lue.
06:37I look at that coaching staff.
06:39So I look at that team as, if not deep close, but one of the most complete teams right now.
06:43And that's where they have the edge over the Lakers, because the Lakers still have a lot of work to do.
06:47This team is pretty much complete and ready to roll, and we're just getting started in free agency.
06:50Malika, can I add one more thing?
06:52Look, the Clippers still have their $5 million mid-level exception.
06:55Obviously, they want to maintain their flexibility for this big summer coming up,
07:01because they feel into a dome.
07:02Steve Ballmer, they can sell themselves to future stars.
07:05But if Bradley Beal were to be bought out of this contract, perhaps the Clippers would be a player in that.
07:12That's something some people have mentioned to me, because the Clippers have always been advantageous
07:16about getting stars on the cheap when there's a situation like that where they're bought out.
07:21Look, in the past, they've gotten point guards like John Wall, Rajon Rondo, Russell Westbrook.
07:27Thank you. We appreciate that.
07:27They could be very advantageous if something like that, unforeseen, would happen, like if Bradley Beal were to be bought out.
07:33I always like getting my stars on the cheap.
07:35James Harden had the best year he's had in five years, made the All-NBA team for the first time since 2000.
07:39Norm Powell, the best year of his career.
07:41Zubach had the best year of his career.
07:43Kawhi Leonard looked like an All-NBA player when he came back in the spring.
07:47Look at this team.
07:48This team's record, whatever it was, I don't know what it was, they were a lot better.
07:51They were allegedly a five seed.
07:53They weren't a five seed.
07:54They ended up having to play the Nuggets.
07:55Okay, so he agrees with you.
07:56They had to play the Nuggets in the first round, and they ended up having to not be able to get past them.
08:00If they had had a different matchup, who knows?
08:02This is a team that is much better than its record says.
08:05It's much better than its expectation.
08:06Yeah.
08:07And, you know, the thing about them is they're just laying back.
08:11They don't have to worry about any expectations.
08:12Nobody's paying attention to them.
08:14They are right there.
08:15This is one of the reasons why the West is so vicious.
08:18You could make a case for four or five different teams winning the whole thing.
08:21I was talking to folks, and we were in Oklahoma City, about that series with the Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles.
08:26And everybody said, yeah, those two teams, those two teams, there really could be a serious arms race in the West, and those were two of the teams that folks were looking at.
08:36Our next WNBA game, it's Tuesday, July 8th on ESPN and ESPN Deportes.
