Spurs star Heung-Min Son has been linked with an exit this summer - but here's why James Trembath thinks he might well stick around until January at least.
Transcript
00:01James, let's just look at Heung-Min Son.
00:03We've obviously mentioned a few times last season,
00:05during the campaign,
00:07that there was a bit of uncertainty around his future at Spurs.
00:10He's obviously made sure he became that Spurs legend
00:14and got that tag after helping deliver that Europa League triumph
00:17at the back end of the season.
00:20What's the stance on Heung-Min Son at the moment?
00:22What do you feel he's thinking as well?
00:25And obviously Spurs fans, nothing but love really for him.
00:29He stuck around when it was really tough
00:31and sort of became this world-class player in North London.
00:36Yeah, I mean, you know, Heung-Min Son is a legend,
00:39you know, absolute legend of the club.
00:40And actually, on the day, eventually, when it does come
00:44and he does depart Spurs,
00:45I think that's going to be more upsetting to a lot of Spurs fans
00:48than when Harry Kane left.
00:49And I think that tells you everything, obviously.
00:51Harry Kane, record goal scorer, absolute icon at the club.
00:54But, you know, Son, he's stuck with us.
00:56He came in for an absolute bargain when you look at it.
00:59Back in the day there, over 10 years ago, you know,
01:01£22 million, I think it was at the time.
01:03And he's just been an absolute goal machine, an assist machine.
01:06And, you know, just his model professionalism,
01:09you know, he's just exemplary, isn't he, on and off the pitch.
01:11Idolised by all the fans.
01:13And, you know, we know he struggled last season.
01:16He had a lot of difficulties.
01:17He wasn't fit.
01:18Not sure the system particularly suited him in the end
01:21that Ange was playing.
01:23And if anybody has the right to decide what comes next,
01:26it's absolutely humming, Son.
01:27You know, I think all fans would agree he deserves to be
01:30sort of the gatekeeper of his own destiny, really.
01:33That said, I think it's interesting, actually, that he's still here.
01:37We've obviously got the upcoming tour to Korea,
01:40where he'll obviously get a lot of love from the Spurs fans.
01:43I dare say there'll be some marketing,
01:45contractual arrangements within that as well.
01:47But I suspect, and this is just a personal opinion now,
01:50that actually Son may well stay on, at least until January.
01:54I have a feeling he fancies one more crack at the Champions League.
01:57He wants to see what Thomas Frank has in store for him.
02:00And then, you know, come January, it may well be
02:03he's got six months left on his contract at that period.
02:06You know, it may be then he heads off to the likes of MLS
02:08or Saudi Arabia.
02:10We'll obviously know where we are in terms of the Champions League,
02:12but, you know, there'll be just one group game left after Christmas.
02:15So, come January, we'll know where we are with Spurs, and he will.
02:20And that may well be the time that he then says his farewells.
02:23But I can see him giving us another six months
02:25and just reviewing it after that.
02:27And, you know, I think that'd be a good move.
02:29He could help the transition from, you know, new manager
02:31and help bed in some of the younger players in the squad.
02:35And then he can look to decide what he's going to do in the future.
02:38But I don't see him signing another contract at Spurs.
02:40I mean, he turned 33 this week.
02:42So, he's certainly coming towards the twilight years.
02:44But, you know, the way Thomas Frank sets up may well suit him.
02:48And, you know, you've seen with the likes of Mohamed Salah,
02:49when people start doubting Salah, he comes back with a bang.
02:53And, you know, certainly very, very early to be writing Sonoff
02:56because he's a Premier League icon and a real legend.
02:59So, it'll be very, very interesting.
03:01But I suspect he might well stay on for another six months.
03:04Yeah, I mean, just on him, in terms of the amount of managers he's played under,
03:09I mean, it's very rare that you see a player still really hit their peak
03:13under so many different tactics, so many different managerial views.
03:17That just shows his professionalism, his dedication to Spurs as well.
03:21How impressed with him in terms of that have you been as a Spurs fan
03:25and really looking at the growth as the player,
03:27obviously, you mentioned there, signed 10 years ago.
03:30And he was, you know, now he's this season professional.
03:34And as you say, a Premier League icon as well.
03:37Yeah, absolutely.
03:37I mean, if, you know, if there was an award going every season,
03:40you'd call him the Clubman of the Year.
03:41I used to win that back in the day as a teenager playing football.
03:45And that's definitely the award you'd give him.
03:47I mean, when you cast your mind back to his first season
03:50and he really struggled, actually, was in and out of the team.
03:54A lot of talk after that first season under Maurizio Pochettino
03:57that he wanted to move on, actually.
03:58But, you know, he showed flashes again during that season.
04:01I was in the crowd at the Riverside, I think, that year.
04:04He scored a couple of fantastic goals as we beat Middlesbrough.
04:07I think it was 2-1.
04:09So he showed flashes, but obviously very unsettled.
04:12It was a big move for him coming over, lots of eyeballs on him.
04:14You know, he's obviously the career in Beckham, if you like,
04:17in terms of his stature.
04:18But he's just grown and grown and grown.
04:20And, you know, you look at the years with Harry Kane,
04:23it was the old Kane to Son, Son to Kane assists, you know,
04:26particularly under Jose Mourinho.
04:29He's just adapted under every manager, knuckled down, you know,
04:31from Pochettino to Conte, to Mourinho, obviously down to Ange,
04:36being given the captaincy.
04:38And, you know, rightly so.
04:39He's just been a terrific leader, terrific ambassador for the club.
04:43And, you know, as I say, his profession is absolutely exemplary.
04:46A real star, but you'd never know it.
04:48He's very, very humble, isn't he?
04:50And he just kept producing and producing and producing.
04:52So, you know, hopefully if he does stay with us,
04:55then we can see the best of him.
04:57Because, you know, I think if he wants to go,
04:59you've got the high of lifting the trophy in the Europa League,
05:02obviously last season, which, you know, he absolutely deserved.
05:05But then there's that caveat around his form last year.
05:08So, you know, I have the opinion he might well want to leave,
05:11you know, with a better goal and assist record than he had last season,
05:15let's say, and, you know, leave with memories of that
05:18rather than that sort of declining form sort of mantra
05:20that people are sort of levelling with him at the moment.
