00:00A reform group has criticized the Sarawak government's decision to increase the number
00:05of seats in the state assembly.
00:07Thomas Phan, chairman of Electoral Reform Group Engage, said Sarawak was already among
00:12the most overrepresented state assemblies in the country.
00:16He pointed out that the average number of registered voters for each Sarawak state seat
00:20is 23,696 compared to Sulango where each state seat has an average of 65,676 voters.
00:29Phan said adding another 17 state seats would bring the average per seat to a mere 19,627
00:36voters, representing only one-third that of Sulango's average.
00:40Former Election Commission Deputy Chairman Wana Ahmad Wan Omar said the decision by the Sarawak
00:46Legislative Assembly appeared to be politically motivated.
00:50He said the move was to pave the way for the creation of more parliamentary seats for Sarawak
00:55when the EC conducts a new delineation exercise next year.
