00:00All guests on 95.7 The Game appear on the River Islands.
00:03Guest line is in a time for you to discover the islands, River Islands, in Lathrop.
00:08Let's welcome in Chris Rose, John Boy Media, NFL Network.
00:12Chris, how you doing, man? Thanks for popping on.
00:16Absolutely, guys. How are you?
00:18Has everybody settled down after last night's huge Giants win?
00:22Oh, my. Well, get this.
00:23It's incredible, Chris.
00:24This probably crossed your radar, but I'll just mention it again.
00:27We used to have a team here, the Oakland A's.
00:31They actually, Lawrence Butler, hit the first pitch for an inside the park homer,
00:39and then the Giants last night with Patrick Bailey on the last pitch of the game
00:43win it on a walk-off inside the park homer.
00:47You ever seen anything like that that you can remember?
00:52Well, no. It's the first time we've ever seen that,
00:54where somebody, you know, let off the game and then somebody ended a game
00:58with an inside the park homerun, so that was fun.
01:01But I was watching the Giants game live, and, boy, he hit the hell out of that.
01:08He did.
01:10You know, I guess three-run walk-off homer,
01:14but it was so much better when it's a three-run sprint-off homer.
01:18Like, I just, I love that.
01:20I was in San Francisco for each year, O's inside the park.
01:24Now, hold on.
01:25My dog's got to get really excited because people are here.
01:28Either that or she loves inside the park homeruns, one of the two.
01:31Maybe both.
01:32Yeah, but I was there in San Francisco when each year, I think,
01:35hit the first and only, if I'm not mistaken, all-star game inside the park homer.
01:40It's one of the many reasons that is my favorite ballpark.
01:44I always put kind of Fenway and Wrigley in their own category.
01:48But I love watching the game there because the ball can literally bounce any direction.
01:52You never know which way it's going to go.
01:54And the Giants have played great, great baseball this year,
01:58so it's good to see that joint rocking again.
02:00No, I'm with you, Chris, and hopefully it'll culminate in a playoff berth.
02:03They made the big trade for Devers.
02:05What have you made from him since he's joined the Giants?
02:08And they've kind of gotten hot without him tearing the cover off the ball.
02:12Yeah, I mean, forget about tearing the cover off the ball.
02:16It doesn't feel like he's hitting it out of the infield much.
02:22And so I suppose that's the good news is he can go on streaks where he will carry you.
02:27He's that good a player.
02:29People can say whatever they want about his defense,
02:32which has been shoddy at best since he's come up.
02:35They can say whatever he wants about his lack of interest in maybe moving across the diamond to first base,
02:42and who knows where that sits.
02:44The Red Sox paid him over $300 million,
02:48and now the Giants are picking up the tab to have him hit baseballs into the bay.
02:53And that's what he is designed to do.
02:56He hasn't done it yet.
02:57But like I said, he can change the entire complexion of a team.
03:01So as far as guys I like watch hitting, he's one of them.
03:05His strikeout rate has been alarmingly high since he got to San Francisco,
03:09but I don't always think it's the easiest thing to move across the country in the middle of the season either.
03:14So maybe the second half, that will give him a little bit of a breather to see what's going on and go from there.
03:22Chris Rose joining us on 95.7 The Game, John Boy Media, and the NFL Network.
03:27Let me ask you this.
03:29Obviously, like we said, the Giants added a bat a few weeks back with Devers,
03:34and I know you paid particular attention to the Giants.
03:37If they were to acquire another player right now, what position would you like it to be?
03:44What do you think they're most in need of right now and heading into the second half of the season?
03:48I think I would try to still figure out first base without moving Devers there.
04:05There are some guys that are available.
04:07I don't know if Dom Smith is the answer there.
04:12I've always liked Dom.
04:13I think he's actually a really good glove.
04:15But I still want a little more pop there if I could find it.
04:21I don't know.
04:22I mean, other than that, it's not like you're going to get catchers that are available.
04:27I mean, everybody would say, yeah, let's go find a catcher.
04:31Well, there's a lot.
04:32Half the teams in the league are saying the same thing.
04:35And the teams that have them aren't giving them up.
04:38But, you know, the best first baseman that could be available via trade, unfortunately, is in the division in Josh Naylor.
04:45So I would doubt that that's going to happen.
04:50You know, I think other than that, you kind of got to live with what they've got.
04:54I don't know.
04:55I mean, maybe somebody's available for second base.
04:57So I would say the right side of the infield, I guess, that's kind of where I'd sit.
05:03Hey, Chris, let me ask you this, because you started the conversation.
05:06And it's euphoria out here after last night's win.
05:09Just a walk-off incredible.
05:12And, you know, we're trying to keep the party going.
05:14But Will Clark made some comments on a podcast about he was waiting for Devers to come out and take some balls at first base.
05:21You know, when they played the Red Sox and Rafi didn't come out.
05:25And, you know, he doesn't coach for the Giants.
05:28But I don't know if you're familiar with this story.
05:31And where do you stand on it?
05:33Because my partner and I, I'm kind of perplexed that, you know, I'm going to grab him by the neck and bring him out there.
05:39But I'm wondering, like, how could there not be communication for Will to be thinking he was going to help Devers at a new position for three straight days?
05:48Well, I don't know how much you guys paid attention to the Devers stuff in Boston.
05:55But I think it really got off the tracks because of a lack of communication from management, from manager, and from player.
06:02And then eventually it got to the point where, you know, they're all living in the same house and nobody's talking to each other.
06:10I thought that the Giants, I don't think this is as big a story as some people are portraying it.
06:15I really don't.
06:16All right.
06:16Uh, because this happened when he just got to San Francisco, it was against Boston and Will actually came out.
06:25If you watch the whole clip, he said, I, I kind of get it.
06:29Like, I understand it in a Will Clark sort of tone where he said, I'm going to grab him by the neck and make sure that he does it.
06:35Maybe he was joking, but maybe he isn't because we all know Will Clark really well.
06:40Um, but once again, it's just a communication thing.
06:44Like, I, I do think that management should have sat down with Raphael Devers.
06:50Hey, we'd like you to try first base.
06:52We've got a guy here who was a great defensive, well, great all around first baseman, but really great defensively.
06:59Since that's what, that's what we're talking about.
07:01When do you want to do this?
07:02We'd like to have it done in the next three weeks.
07:05We understand if you don't want to do it when your old team's in town.
07:08Great.
07:09Let's pick a few days.
07:10He'll come here.
07:12You'll be there.
07:13You'll show up early.
07:14Let's knock it out.
07:15Like, I just solved all the problems in about 37 seconds.
07:19I'm going to guess that's not the way it was all done.
07:21I could be wrong, but that's what I'm guessing.
07:23Yeah, it feels like there's something missing from the story, Chris.
07:27Chris Rose joining us on 95.7 The Game, John Boy Media, NFL Network.
07:32Let me ask you this.
07:33You, you know, you know baseball.
07:35A couple weeks ago, the Giants were rolling.
07:39Last week, not so much.
07:41This week, they got it going again.
07:43I think they're five behind the Dodgers.
07:45Do you view the Giants as a realistic, you know,
07:50a realistic team that could win the NL West division?
07:56No, but I don't think that's a shot at the Giants or the Padres.
08:00I just think that the Dodgers have hit a major slide,
08:03and they're still five games up, right?
08:06They have died for their longest losing streak in the last six years.
08:10They're in the midst of it right now.
08:12If they hang on and the Dodgers are up 2-1 in the eighth,
08:15and the Giants are down 2-0 in the fourth,
08:18so, you know, it could be six games when we get there this weekend.
08:21I just don't see, with as much depth as the Dodgers have,
08:27and their willingness to go out and add, right?
08:31I mean, Michael Kopech, one of their ace relievers from last year's World Series run,
08:36just got put on the 60-day aisle.
08:38It wouldn't surprise me if they go and get help,
08:41and they're not afraid to do it.
08:43They're not afraid to give up young pieces to continue their run,
08:47and I think that maybe the Giants shot their shot already with Devers.
08:51I don't know how much more Buster Posey would do before the deadline.
08:55So I think that, you know, but there's nothing wrong with making it as a wild card.
08:59We've seen plenty of wild card teams make the World Series in recent years.
09:02Yeah, Arizona Diamondbacks, one of them.
09:04Chris, we love having you on because you do it all.
09:06If you don't mind, I'd like to get your answer to this question.
09:10Randy Moss asked his son.
09:12They were having a conversation about the fifth-best quarterback,
09:14and the four they had was Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, and Lamar.
09:20We don't have you all day.
09:21I got an issue with that.
09:23But who would be the fifth quarterback for Chris Rose,
09:25and how far is Brock Purdy, if he's not the fifth, being slotted in there,
09:31would you have a problem with?
09:35Yeah, so I think that those four are definitely –
09:39I think there's a gap between four and five.
09:41And I think – I don't know how sizable it is, but I think it's sizable enough.
09:48So I think Jalen Hurts is right there.
09:53I think based on what he did last year, that was big time.
09:59You know, I want to see one more year of Brock Purdy
10:07when maybe not everything's in place,
10:10or if I'm going to consider him up there.
10:15I think he's in the next tier, which is fine.
10:17I mean, I would put Hurts, Herbert, Brock Purdy, Dak,
10:23whom I've always liked.
10:24But, you know, I think Jaden Daniels is going to get there.
10:30So, I don't know, that whole group.
10:33Yeah, that was my guy, Jaden Daniels,
10:35even knowing that he's only got one year on his resume.
10:39But it's a fun exercise.
10:40I'll tell you who else I'll throw in there.
10:41I'll tell you who else I'll throw in there.
10:43I would put Baker in there, too, and Jared Goff at the back end.
10:47But, yeah, Baker has been great the last two years.
10:53Really, really good.
10:54Hey, Chris, great stuff.
10:55We really like having you on, and appreciate your time, man.
10:59Always my pleasure, guys.
11:01Take care.
