What is Abreu and or Duran's future in Boston?
Transcript
00:00This is Joe from Weymouth. Hello, Joe.
00:05Hi, good morning, Greg. How are you?
00:07What's up, Joe? What's on your mind?
00:10All right, what's on my mind is, well, I'm no baseball bread,
00:14but I think I have the qualifications anyway to at least speak,
00:19since you and I are the exact same age and I've never lived anywhere else except in Weymouth.
00:27So, but I have to respectfully disagree with him as far as Durant,
00:32and you've got to give something up to get something back,
00:36and Durant has the term and Ryan has the term, and let me tell you why.
00:40So, here's the deal. I love Durant just as much as the next guy.
00:44I love his enthusiasm, his Wally thing, the way he dabs up the guys behind the wall pregame
00:51and all that good stuff, but the thing is, the starting lineup,
00:56the starting outfield next year is Roman Anthony,
01:01Sadan Raphael in center, and Abreu in right.
01:03It's as simple as that.
01:06And Durant is not going to stick around to be a platoon player next year.
01:10So, I mean, as much as I hate to par with him, it is what it is.
01:14You know, the three young studs of the lineup for next year, that's the outfield.
01:18Yeah, I mean, some talk of Raffaella moving to the infield.
01:26He doesn't want to do that, though.
01:28He told Pete Abraham from the Boston Globe that he wants to stay in center field.
01:32Right.
01:33And they're saying he's like, I forget where, it might have been Jones and Keith
01:37that were talking about this, but some ESPN baseball writer had him
01:41as one of the best center fielder in baseball.
01:45So it looks like he has a chance to be a gold glover in center field.
01:49Why would you move a guy like that to the infield
01:53when you obviously have Christian Campbell down?
01:59And I know he's down in the minors,
02:00but why would you move a guy who is such a good defender for you
02:04to move him into the infield?
02:06And that's why I said, what are the Red Sox going to do with Duran
02:10in the offseason?
02:12If you're going to look to trade him...
02:14But you're going to get more value for him in the offseason
02:16than you're going to get right now being up against a deadline
02:20and everybody knows that you need pitching.
02:22Like, I mean...
02:23Right, but if you know that you're going to move on from anywhere
02:27and if that value you could get now can help you potentially win a World Series,
02:33then you do that and you say, you know what?
02:35Maybe we did leave a little bit on the table trading him
02:39before the trade deadline than in the offseason,
02:41but that trade helped us win a World Series
02:44and the guy that we got back is, you know,
02:47a big part of why we're able to win that.
02:50Yeah, I mean, I understand people really like Duran
02:53and they think that he's better offensively
02:56than he's shown so far this season,
02:58but you do just have an excess at that position
03:02and you need help with pitching.
03:04And I don't know if prospects will be enough.
03:07Like, I'm not in the weeds enough to know
03:09if some of these other clubs, what they're looking for,
03:11if prospects are going to be enough
03:13to trade somebody who's going to be a number two in a rotation
03:16or even a number three.
03:18Like, yeah, maybe for a number four or five pitcher,
03:20a 41-year-old like they're talking about coming from Baltimore,
03:23but not with what you really need.
03:25I mean, Brett brought it up,
03:26but you can probably get Nathan Evaldi for prospects.
03:29Like, would that not make you happy?
03:31Of course it would.
03:32He's awesome.
03:33Yeah, that would definitely, I think, make a lot of people.
03:36It meets all your needs.
03:36You're able to keep Duran on the team
03:38and bring in a legitimate pitcher to add to your rotation.
03:41Right, but if you're able to bring in a,
03:44like Brett said with Joe Ryan,
03:46who is more than a legitimate pitcher,
03:49is like, you know, maybe a one-ish on some teams,
03:54but here he's your legit number two when you want that,
03:59and then you have control of him.
04:01You have control of him for two years.
04:03Right, and I mean, Evaldi has a 1.5 ADRA.
04:05Like, he is also that, he is equal to that,
04:08and you don't have to give up Duran.
04:09It's like a win-win.
04:10But you're going to give up Duran anyways in the offseason.
04:12Well, you just want to give up Duran.
04:14No, no, no, you're going to give, so.
04:15Yeah, but you could get more for him in the offseason.
04:17You're not going to keep,
04:18are you going to keep Duran next season?
04:20Well, they have, they wanted to.
04:24I mean, they signed him for long-term.
04:27I mean, I, they, the guy, as Meggo said earlier,
04:30he was an all-star.
04:31I mean, he's having an off-year offensively,
04:34but, I mean, I don't know.
04:36I don't know what they're going to do with Duran.
04:38It feels like it would be between somebody like him or Abreu,
04:44and Abreu is 26, has more power with the home run so far this year,
04:49maybe has a brighter future.
04:50Like we've talked about before, it kind of comes down to,
04:53are you betting on the guy who you've seen from Duran
04:56over the next couple of years,
04:57or who you think Abreu is going to be over the next couple of years?
04:59But my question to them is,
05:02why haven't you signed Duran already then?
05:06If you feel like he's a big part of your future,
05:08and he is what he looked like last year,
05:12why wouldn't you have signed?
05:13What do you mean?
05:13Like, he's basically been on one-year deals.
05:16Like, they haven't given him a real contract,
05:19so why wouldn't you have signed this guy like a Christian Campbell
05:23or like a Sedan Raphael?
05:25Well, Christian Campbell's got, like, that super early.
05:28No, no, no.
05:28I feel like nobody really has that deal.
05:29Okay, so why hadn't they give Duran one of these veteran contracts
05:34that you would say, like, all right, he's, you know,
05:37he's going to be here for the next six, seven years?
05:40Yeah, I don't know.
05:41Because they're probably going to trade him in the offseason, right?
05:43Like, that's the point.
05:44Right, so I guess that's the point that I'm making.
05:46They don't see him as part of their future.
05:50But isn't it better to have a guy like Ivaldi and Duran on this team
05:54if you're trying to push for a World Series than to have Joe Ryan?
05:57Listen, I agree with you.
05:59It's an easy.
05:59But Brett also said that Texas, I don't know,
06:03are they going to be willing to give up Ivaldi?
06:05It seems like Joe Ryan.
06:07They're right around 500, sir.
06:08It seems like Joe Ryan wants to be on the first thing smoking
06:11to get out of Minnesota.
06:12He's like, send me anywhere.
06:14I love Minnesota, though.
06:16Love Minnesota.
06:17July is such an exciting time.
