00:14here she is a puppy with the best haircut in town just make sure you're not swollen under there
00:23known as a nation of animal lovers the UK is home to 36 million household pets 12 and a half
00:31million cats 13 and a half million dogs and not to mention all the other creatures great and small
00:39that we welcome into our families and in this brand new series we'll be finding out what happens
00:46when our fur-legged friends are in need I'll meet their devoted owners and the expert staff who
00:55treat them from the routine emergency ward 10 I'm your girl to the life-saving and everything else in
01:04between I could sit here all day and talk to these doggies we'll capture the intense bond between
01:11owners animals and the vets and I go beyond the vets to see how other experts can bring the
01:24very best out of your pet we don't need them to be best friends we just need them to learn to
01:28coexist without any tension or any conflict so join me Fern Britain on a roller coaster of emotions inside
01:38the vets I'm back at the Grove vets in Bristol where husband and wife team Andy and Amy Valencia
01:54and their longtime friend and colleague Dr James Greenwood have welcomed me into their professional
02:00world that's all I want to do along with their veterinary nursing team they have introduced me to
02:06the furry patients and loving owners who fill their appointment books everyone's ready as with human
02:16health care the range of treatments available to our beloved pets constantly evolves and the team here
02:22always aims to offer options to suit each patient we can't help but see looking vulnerable around 70
02:30percent of male dogs in the UK are neutered and this routine procedure is what four-year-old border collie
02:36Gus is in for today hiya hello you're right yeah I'm good got Gus yeah I've got Gus great
02:44hello Gus hello Ella hi um why is Gus here today so I wanted to I wanted to get neutered but he had an
02:55injury and it was it took about 18 months to recover I didn't want to add another stress to his life so
03:02rather than getting him castrated I decided to try and implant first yeah what was his injury he tore
03:08his quad tore his quad yeah is he some kind of athlete yeah we do agility and fly ball with him oh
03:14you do yeah what's fly ball basically it's a team of four dogs racing against four other dogs they've got
03:20four jumps to go over where they turn on a box collect a ball and they come back over four jumps and
03:26the fastest team of four dogs wins and are you a winner yeah yeah you were doing it yeah we've been
03:32doing we've been doing a few years now so desperate to get out and back into the job I hope it goes
03:38well I might see you later yeah yeah okay thank you as Ella leaves Gus in the team's capable hands
03:46James's next appointment is a Grove regular Pushkins has come here today for a demat she's a long-haired
03:56blue Persian pushkins is pretty much a one-person cat and that person is my mum who finds it a little
04:04bit difficult to groom once a year she comes to have a bit of a tidy up she's most definitely a character
04:11pushkins is skittish but she's um a lovely pussycat she does tend to hiss and growl quite a lot
04:21she's got her own personality and she does what she wants
04:26right let's go on through oh gosh pushkins heavy okay
04:35a demat is a procedure for animals who struggle to maintain their coats themselves and also resist
04:44being regularly groomed to minimize anxiety and discomfort pets are usually sedated but with such
04:51a spicy character administering the sedative injection requires a careful strategy let's make a plan
04:58so what we're going to do is I need to get the injection into her muscle um she is looking
05:07pretty unimpressed with the whole situation so I think if you hold that I can put the injection to
05:13a muscle yeah vet nurse Lea has come prepared with gauntlets to protect her hands if things get hairy
05:20so to speak okay good I know that's fine yeah you're good there beautiful good job there you go
05:32I know it's okay she's swearing she's like don't laugh at me okay good girl right perfect waiting game
05:45let's just give her some time and hopefully she'll go into a nice deep snooze
05:51hi it's amy calling from the vet
05:58with pushkins drifting off james and vet nurse alice prepare border collie gus for his implant
06:06i haven't heard about this before james chemical castration for dogs
06:11yeah it's it's growing in popularity and I think uh there's all sorts of debate around castration
06:18and I think it's good that we're moving forward you know when you know maybe sort of 30 40 years ago
06:23we did almost kind of recommend to castrate every male dog but nowadays I think the science has moved
06:30on our understanding of dog behavior has moved on and there are some dogs where castration is still
06:36a huge benefit yeah but there are some dogs where castration can actually make things worse
06:40testosterone in a dog is a coping hormone some dogs need testosterone to be able to
06:45face the world with confidence so if we are taking that off every single dog then you're going to
06:51leave some dogs that are really struggling to cope and the thing about surgical castration is
06:54you know it is permanent once they're off I can't get them back on
06:58but with an implant it is reversible so it's kind of a bit of a it's a bit of a try before you buy if
07:05you like you know we can test the waters see how they cope why are we doing this on the floor by the
07:09way well for a dog to be up on a table it's quite unnatural for them so that can already create a sense
07:15of stress or worry so we're on the floor we've got some really good distraction going on at the
07:20front end what's that a tube of something liver paste liver paste liver honestly if I could he's
07:26adoring it yeah if I could get one tip out there it would be that liver seems to be the absolute I
07:32don't know the gold dust for dogs they love it so anything that contains liver is always an immediate
07:38head so this is the implant all right so we just get this out of here and then this is the needle
07:47oh blimey yeah okay I'm gonna close my eyes you know it is a chunky needle but I promise you most
07:56dogs do not feel this at all so if you've got a good hold there Alice for us I did a very bad job
08:05of keeping my cool Gus on the other hand cool as a cucumber good lads good boy good lads so what
08:16was that 30 seconds not even that yeah well done and well done so he's gonna go back now to your mama
08:26and uh and keep training because oh I love liver breast
08:30hey here he comes oh there we go
08:37he is so well behaved isn't he oh he's just amazing honestly he's such a lovely boy
08:43very intelligent um so that's the implant all done so that'll be 12 months so you know see how you go
08:48any problems just give a shout but yeah yeah otherwise he should be good I'll leave him with you
08:52thank you so much no worries we'll see you soon take care bye and with that Gus is free to get back
08:59to his fly ball training still to come find out what help is at hand when our faithful four-legged
09:07friends become foes the obvious worry is if we're not quick enough to remove her from the situation
09:14and Andy has big decisions to make about a very poorly pup
09:21this is gonna be one of those really tricky ones to decide what to do
09:26uh-oh vet bills don't worry dad I'll eat them haha see you later
09:34oh I thought we were here about my allergies no no it's fine it can be about you
09:44ferne britain inside the vets brought to you by pet plan insurance
09:47emergencies are part of life at any vet's practice and this morning Andy is treating a very unwell little
09:56puppy we had a call from a lotter's owner this morning just to say that she really wasn't feeling
10:04her best lotter is a three-month-old German short-haired pointer who even at this young age
10:11is known for her love of scavenging now the question is is she feeling poorly and has she
10:18been sick just because she's a young puppy that's feeling poorly and sick or could there be something a
10:22little bit more serious going on given her history of scavenging the worst case scenario would be do
10:28the x-rays and the scans and it shows that there is a lot of foreign material that's genuinely causing
10:33an obstruction at that point we'll need to make a clinical judgment is that an obstruction that
10:38can shift on its own or the worst case scenario is that there is a surgical issue going on which
10:43means we're gonna have to do major surgery on a young puppy which obviously carries risk
10:48so the first step is to x-ray lotter's abdomen to see if there are indeed any foreign objects lodged in
10:58her intestines priming extra is taking this is gonna be one of those really tricky ones to decide what to do
11:18it's not a nice x-ray but I mean there's no clear foreign body puppies generally don't have a lot of
11:24intra-abdominal fat which means that it's quite hard to see the internal organs in the in the abdomen
11:31so there's not a lot of definition on this x-ray and it's trying to interpret what is going on here and
11:39whether or not that is a dilated loop of small intestine which would not be great because that could
11:46imply that there is a an obstruction further up but the problem that you've got is I mean like it's
11:51it's a you know I this on its own is not enough information to say that we should be opening this
11:58little puppy up so we're going to try and add more information here so we're going to do one more x-ray
12:02and I'm going to do an ultrasound scan and then we need to make a judgment call with the clock ticking
12:08and the x-ray inconclusive Andy is under pressure to make a decision will lotta need to undergo high
12:15risk surgery or can the team pull her through without it
12:19one of the many effects of the coronavirus pandemic was an increase in pet ownership puppy adoption in
12:32particular rose significantly during the crisis and as this generation of dogs now become adults
12:37the impact of their out of the ordinary early years is becoming clear
12:41vets across the country are reporting an uptick in behavioral concerns from the owners
12:47and of course social media reflects that trend
12:51i have noticed scrolling through online laughing at some things crying at others a new sort of animal psychologist behaviorist
13:10train of thought is coming through so if i needed one where would i find where do we go yes pet behaviorists
13:17i think are absolutely crucial behavior has become a hot topic you can imagine if somebody has got
13:23a dog that's barking all the time you go online somebody offers you a quick solution
13:27of course you know you you're in a time of desperation you might end up clicking on that
13:31link and going forward with that person this is one big problem that we have is that it's an
13:35unregulated market so literally anybody could set up a social media account on a platform
13:41call refer to themselves a behaviorist and start giving out unvalidated information always check
13:47the credentials of the person that you are starting to take or might take advice from ideally you want
13:53that person to be registered with one of the behavior bodies or or training bodies that we have in
13:58the uk we refer to pet behaviorists all the time clinical animal behaviorists we have a list on our books
14:03that we go to when our when we have problem behaviors that we can't help from a veterinary point of
14:08view we'll check them out and refer them what's the most common behavioral problem so one thing
14:14that's really interesting is the link between pain and behavior so one thing that we are getting more
14:19and more studies to show is that any animal that's in pain can affect how they're behaving at home so
14:23that could be unwanted barking or it could be pet aggression so if you have dogs that aren't very good
14:29with other dogs out on on leads or things like that so there is there is a whole plethora of emotions
14:34and feelings and all sorts of different things fears loves yeah it's all there and we know
14:40scientifically it's there we've proven this so to then you know try and get to the bottom of why
14:44dogs or cats are doing certain things you really need to understand the science you need to have
14:49that background that degree that understanding on a really deep level to be to be able to offer the
14:55solution around three quarters of uk dog owners report their pooch displaying at least one undesirable
15:03behavior carrie is one dog owner who knows firsthand just how problematic dog behavior can become
15:11carrie's yorkie poo hetty has turned on her cockapoo sister nora hetty suffers from painful
15:19chronic skin conditions which make her aggressive towards other dogs nora in particular after a
15:26confrontation in which nora was hurt carrie's vet referred her to bristol-based clinical pet
15:31behaviorist rosie beskaby on rosie's advice hetty and nora are kept separate at all times in the house
15:40carrie has even had to install a stair gate in her kitchen today rosie is here for a follow-up
15:46appointment to see how carrie and the dogs are getting on hi rosie hi carrie nice to see you all
15:57right thanks how are you come on in thank you
16:02so how have things been since i last saw you so um we're living obviously with the stair gate in
16:08in the house and most of the time we're doing uh really well keeping them separate um we did have
16:13one little faux pas where someone left the gate open and hetty got through was all a bit startled
16:18and a bit a little bit growly with nora but outside of that uh they've been fine being kept
16:22separate in the house okay i know it's not easy but like we've said this the slower we take it you
16:29know this is a bit of a marathon not a sprint we're building their relationship back up from
16:33you know quite a negative place and our aim today then is to just progress from being out on a walk
16:39together and then we'll probably come into the garden keeping them on leads to start with and
16:44just see whether they can choose to just relax in each other's presence with carrie's daughter on hand
16:50to help it's time to see how the dogs cope on a walk we're very cautious when we're out on a walk
17:00and you can see hetty beginning to get a little bit agitated the obvious worry is if we're not quick
17:11enough to remove her from the situation
17:20it's looking as if rose's advice might be having an impact
17:24so it's really lovely to see that they're clearly very happy in each other's presence out on walks
17:32so that's that's great that is great that we're building lots of positive associations with each
17:37other out and about they're both sharing sniffs they're happy to be up close to each other
17:41so i was just wondering why is it that nora and hetty are so much happier and
17:45and finding it easy to be in each other's company outside and why is it so different when we're indoors
17:51outside is classed as neutral territory there's no resources for hetty to feel the need to control
17:58like her favorite beds and you guys and the sofas etc it's a smaller space as well so outside it's
18:04nice wide open space whereas inside it's all a bit narrower and a bit more confined yeah so let's go
18:10back towards the house and see if we can move into the garden and maintain this lovely level of
18:15relaxation that we've got oh here's hoping if this works it's significant because the dogs understand
18:22the garden as home turf which in the past has triggered hetty's aggressive territorial behaviors
18:30so this is obviously the first time they've been together in the garden or home for a couple of months
18:36yeah they both seem just as happy it might seem like they're ignoring each other but there's lots of
18:40subtle communication going on that they're quite happy in each other's presence they're just calm
18:45and relaxed which is exactly what they want we don't need them to be best friends we just need
18:49them to learn to co-exist without any tension or any conflict rosie is happy to take the dog's training
18:56one step further so it's probably we can unclip her lead probably now and she's happy to just go and
19:01sunbathe and nor nor is being a little bit excitable so we'll keep her on the lead okay
19:10as they're both so calm we've obviously got hetty now off the lead i'm just gonna unclip nora's lead
19:17as well and they're still being very calm aren't they there wasn't any change in their behavior
19:22once you unclipped nora as well no that's it and as long as the arousal levels and the calmness stays
19:28as it is then they can have a mooch around the garden together our next step would be back on leads
19:33and moving into the house together but they've had a very busy morning so let them just process what
19:38they've learned and we'll have another go another day oh that's amazing rosie thank you so much
19:42no worries oh girls it's okay that session with rosie was so helpful i would say to any other
19:52um owner who encounters this kind of difficulty or behavioral difficulties with their dogs reach out
19:58to your vet and and get a referral to a behaviorist like rosie who has really been a game changer for
20:03us we do have pet insurance and as the behavioral issue was referred by the vet to the behaviorist
20:11that's being covered by our insurance
20:16i love nora and hetty they're really special dogs and it's such a joy to be out with them enjoying it
20:22and watching them enjoy their lives
20:34back at the vets 10 year old pushkin's sedative has taken effect she isn't fully unconscious but is
20:41relaxed enough for vet nurses leah and alice to begin her demat hello oh my god you're a puffball
20:48cats carry basically a hairbrush around with them all the time and that is in their mouth it's their
20:53tongue if you've ever felt a cat's tongue it's very rough and that's because they use it to to slide
20:58through the hair so normally they can keep on top of their grooming themselves really well but some
21:02long-haired cats that can be a real challenge it can get knotted you can get these big thick mats of
21:07fur there's a risk of skin infections there's even a risk of parasites and that's when we as vets need
21:12to step in and give them a helping hand for some cats a demat is a one-off that allows them to begin
21:18grooming again pushkins hasn't been able to do this in the past so it's something she needs annually
21:25i'll start from the back and work up to the top yeah oh my goodness that is just dense yeah
21:33there's dense hair right there there's actually no fur that's not mattered it does not
21:39i think her skin must just not be able to breathe in there
21:44like look how thick that's just that's one sheet that's that's crazy it just must be so sore there
21:52just leave her book you're really sore yeah that bit are you okay i think you could pull off the little
22:00lion look even with long-haired cats the head and paws fur will be shorter than it is on the rest of their
22:07bodies meaning that doesn't need to be removed in a demat so for leah and alice the job is nearly done
22:13there we go the final result good as new
22:18good girl quick quench over there hi van thanks for waiting oh hello here she is hello
22:35puskits she's honestly she's been good as gold because you know she doesn't really like a fuss bless
22:40no but she's honestly she she was so good oh i'm so pleased perfect so we've clipped off all the main
22:46areas that were really really matted we've left the bits on which were kind of sort of okay which
22:50are kind of the the legs um and her her face thank you so much that's okay you're very welcome no worries
22:57okay bye she'll be very happy to get home so off goes pushkins with her brand new look if only we
23:05knew what she really thinks of it ah stung by a bee don't judge me it'll probably happen again
23:14fern britain inside the vets brought to you by pet plan insurance
23:18uh-oh vet bills don't worry dad i'll eat them see you later fern britain inside the vets brought to you by
23:26pet plan insurance after multiple x-rays and abdominal scans have failed to establish conclusively
23:35whether or not poorly part plotter has something lodged in her digestive tract
23:40andy now needs to make a decision about his next step we can't a hundred percent rule out that there
23:48isn't a foreign body causing surgical abdomen but the degree of suspicion is not high enough
23:55that it warrants putting this dog through a general anesthetic in surgery at this stage for vets clinical
24:01decisions often involve assessing the balance of risk so the plan is then to treat it conservatively
24:09so fluids anti-sickness pain relief and i'm just gonna have to do a bit of a rectal exam to see how
24:16impacted she actually is just gonna get some gloves on she's gonna have a bit of a feel not
24:21sure if the camera's gonna grab that it's gonna be a bit gross that's not ideal it's really gritty
24:27andy's growing suspicion is that lotter's blockage is in her rectum
24:35i'm sorry sweetie the next stage is assessing just how solid that blockage is
24:40that park yeah it's all wood chips
24:45yeah it's not great because if that entire transverse and descending colon is full of wood chips
24:53potentially quite serious we need to start shifting that
24:56the next step for lotter is an enema
25:02an enema just means we are putting something up the bottom to loosen everything up
25:07in this case essentially lubricate all of the impacted material up there
25:11so she's got a chance of passing it on her own
25:20god so gritty so right now we're just putting some warm water up there
25:26aiming for about 80 ml and then what we're going to do is pull this out it's going to feel
25:32her colon now that we've had to put fluid up there so i can feel that fecal matter now
25:40kind of breaking apart my fingers the idea being if we can loosen it up and break it apart
25:48either it will all come out now or when she wakes up and needs to do a poo
25:57it's only quite a messy smelly job sorry sweet up
26:02no wonder she's so sore it's just right guys hopefully
26:13this is all we need to be doing i'll carry her through in case she explodes and then it's on me
26:18it's time to do some poo sweetie
26:33they're never any hundred percent i think is the thing it very much seems like this is the primary
26:40cause of her discomfort and feeling so unwell um we've done our best to rule out anything more sinister
26:46but we're going to see how she responds good girl and once she's awake enough guys if
26:52she's able to go for a little walk with it continue to loosen everything up
26:59after some rest lotta is back on her paws albeit unsteadily here we go here we are hey wobble chops
27:07of course she's such a sweet dog
27:16it falls to leah to take her outside to see whether the enema has worked
27:27here we go
27:28unfortunately lotta's productive walk is still not the end of the story living out his csi dreams andy
27:39is on his way to investigate let's have a look
27:46ouch it's just very sharp lots of very sharp bits of grit that looks like stone
27:55wood chips it's all coming out which is good news
28:01i think she's done another poo around the corner which looked a bit more normal and formed which
28:06is obviously very good news so hopefully between what we got out during the enema and what's coming
28:10out now um we've got most of it out i'm just going to go around and have a look at the other one
28:15yeah fine nice normal poo okay let's see if she starts feeling a bit better after a few more hours
28:24of observation by the team lotta is ready to be discharged
28:30right so lots of looking extremely bright she's at a good meal she's been shouting at us asking to go
28:37home obviously we need to make sure she continues to improve at home but everything is looking very
28:41positive at this stage as lotta returns to her family to recuperate another discharge patient has
28:52hit the ground running following his castration implant gus is back with his owner ella doing what
28:59he loves best fly ball border collies are a working breed and fly ball fulfills their need for both
29:07mental and physical challenge ella's commitment to gus's training is a beautiful example of just how
29:14far we will go for our beloved pets
29:20border collies are a lot they're they are the main character
29:29when i got gas i had a collie shaped hole in my heart that i after six months of losing my last dog
29:35doug i just thought when does this get better and i can honestly say since i got gus that's when he got
29:41better he's a massive character he's equal parts like goofy super serious like worky he's got he's a
29:51really complex dog gus is more than just a pet dog to me i plan my life around him his hobbies hi everyone
29:59welcome to today's session so today our plan is to run gus jiva prime and patent fly ball is a great
30:08fit for border collies in particular okay let's go it's fast it expends that physical need for energy
30:15but also they have to think through that adrenaline they have to be able to push through and work and
30:19use their brain
30:26i love training him it keeps me on my toes i've got to think outside the box with him
30:30it's not always been straightforward as border collies are bred to be working dogs injury and rehab
30:37can lead to frustration something that gus and ella have experienced firsthand he hurt his leg he tore
30:43his quad when he was about seven or eight months old he just went lame on a walk we'd lifted him over
30:49a little fence and um walking ahead and i just like i caught his gait his gait his back leg was funny
30:55we got an mri and they they saw there was a load of scar tissue above his knee we had um yeah platelet
31:02transfusions and laser and shockwave and then all the physio and hydro it mounts up really quickly
31:10when i got gus um i got him insured straight away and we got pet pam for life
31:17round round round round gus he's fully recovered he'll always have that scar tissue in his legs
31:24we can't get rid of the scar tissue he's broken down as much as i think we can and he looks fine you
31:28know he can run he can have a i'm i pinch myself every day that he can go and do fly ball because it
31:35means he's content he's truly content for gus a castration implant was the right decision the
31:43surgical alternative would have involved a recovery period of up to two weeks which ella knew gus would
31:49not happily tolerate his behavior has exponentially improved since being able to run and be free and do
31:56all the naughty dog things that he wants to do oh yes good boy good boy i was really worried about
32:03neutrinim which is why we went with an implant first so there was no downtime no recovery time
32:07and we can go straight back into training i've had a border collie for 18 years now when i was lonely
32:14or you know when it has been hard i've always had always had the dogs it taught me really early on that
32:19it's not just about me i've got a big commitment to to him being content and happy as well and i love it
32:26it and i wouldn't have my life any other way collie girl forever
32:40back at the vets hungarian visla izzy has been brought in with a broken nail and a very swollen toe
32:48she's holding her paw off the ground when she walks and james is concerned she may have fractured a bone
32:56okay so this now is a lot he sedates izzy so he can begin to investigate
33:05here you go good as gold
33:12with izzy now under sedation james takes her through to the x-ray room who's this this is izzy hello izzy
33:19all right good girl what's happened to izzy we're a little bit worried whether she's potentially
33:27broken her toe did she have an accident so she had it was about two days ago without on a walk
33:33and suddenly yelped and then brought the leg up and there's been hopping on it ever since
33:38so the only way to know is to is to take an x-ray right so we're in the x-ray room so she's had a
33:43sedation we're in the x-ray room uh you can see the foot is it's this toe here that when you compare
33:52it to the other side is a lot lot bigger so we've got all this swelling around here oh poor lady so the
33:59x-ray will then show you how you're going to treat whatever it is yeah so the x-ray will tell us if the
34:04bone inside the toe has fractured or not um and then we can make a plan from there
34:14so we're just going to try and splay her toes out a bit do you want to just see if you can hold
34:19it like that and i'll see whether i can
34:25i love this this this vet practice has got so much high-tech kit in it which is brilliant
34:32i'm highly qualified bets too but a bit of sellotape never goes amiss
34:39we're very good at wrapping christmas presents
34:45okay x-rays
34:49okay this is good we've got all this swelling sort of around here which is more than we'd expect
34:57so we'll get one more from the side and if that's clear then i think it's just a broken nail so let's
35:03hope ah i can't find the end of the sun tape
35:11x-rays okay get that through
35:16okay so this is the toe that i'm particularly worried about yeah the good news is it doesn't
35:25look fractured from that angle but it doesn't explain why the toe is so swollen so i'm now going
35:30to investigate that fractured nail a little bit more and see if we can find what's going on there so
35:36let's bring her out here
35:40okay little one oh little girl what have you done to yourself so she's only actually under sedation
35:49she's not under full anesthetic which is why she's still a little bit sort of tiny bit aware of what's
35:57going on but she's not uh not fully awake so this is the nail there and you can see
36:06we've got this fracture across here yes yeah there you go
36:12so she's not smell there as well is there yeah so it is so we've definitely got an infection okay
36:18do you know what i think we need to take the whole nail off
36:22it's gone right down to the nail bed yeah right so i'm going to give her a little bit of anesthetic
36:30drug so she goes completely asleep so that's the anesthetic going in
36:37as i leave the experts to get on with the delicate task at hand
36:41james works to remove the broken and infected nail while vet nurse alice monitors the anesthetic
36:48keeping izzy safe and asleep
36:58with the procedure completed james calls izzy's owners with an update
37:05hello hi hi it's james friend from the grove so basically just to fill you in and i'm confident and
37:11happy that there's no uh fracture or dislocation of any of the bones unfortunately i haven't been
37:17able to save the nail as such but a new nail will be able to grow back once we've got the infection
37:21under control okay no worries at all yeah okay bye bye
37:25oh i thought we were here about my allergies no no it's fine it can be about you
37:34fern britain inside the vets brought to you by pet plan insurance
37:38ah stung by a bee don't judge me it'll probably happen again fern britain inside the vets brought
37:46to you by pet plan insurance
37:47izzy the vizsla is back at the vets three days after her infected nail was removed
37:56this checkup is the next stage in her treatment just let her say hello hello darling
38:03she's lovely though isn't she she's so sweet how are you doing she's a little bit on the nervous
38:10side so we're going to just go at her speed hey so she's been on anti-inflammatories and some
38:17antibiotics um she's still a little bit sore with it as you can sort of see she's holding off the
38:22ground uh so we're going to take the dressing off now and see kind of just see what it's looking like
38:28and make a decision whether we need to redress it or whether it might actually be better to get some
38:32air to it and sort of let it dry out a little bit i've got a bit of nervous lip licking going on
38:39ah that's a sign isn't it yeah yeah so often lips when when dogs lick their lips it can be a sign
38:45they're just feeling a little bit anxious you know just a bit unsure about things but a cotton
38:50wool has just stuck to a nail so i'm going to just okay is that the one that was removed then yeah you
38:57can see the yeah good there you go have a break have a break it's a bit of a weighing up between do we
39:06leave it open to the air or do we protect it with another dressing and actually what i'm going to
39:10suggest is that we meet halfway and just use a human sock so just a good sports sock or something
39:15like that pop that over a little bit of tape at the top and then the owner can take it off have a
39:20good look and replace that easily at home and that's quite a nice way of just offering a little
39:25bit of protection any problems come back to you absolutely we'll be here next up is badger a three
39:38and a half year old moggy in for a routine vaccine booster as a cat mum and all-round cat fan for this
39:44appointment i have nominated myself cat wrangler in chief hello come on have a look around that's
39:52all right hey you're very handsome mr confidence spread that towel out a little bit because this
40:00has got some nice special calming scent oh yeah that's good isn't it before injecting badger james
40:06undertakes standard general checks as it's important your pet is in good health when they receive a
40:12vaccination what's his history so probably about six or seven months ago unfortunately got hit by a
40:19car oh he had a fracture just at the end of his back leg over his hip um thankfully he's made a full
40:25recovery um but it has been quite a quite a process poor old boy has it made him a bit a bit skittish
40:32though with the vet you're being very quiet i'm talking very quiet because he does have a limited um
40:40tolerance of how much we can sort of do with him which partly will be because he's been in and out of
40:46the vets quite a bit um coming to see a vet it's not his ideal that's not his ideal day we're gonna go
40:53nice and gentle so badger is having four important vaccine boosters in one injection
41:01the tri-cat vaccination provides protection against the viral causes of feline flu and enteritis
41:07while the felv vaccination component protects against the feline leukemia virus
41:16can i do anything to help if you're happy to of course just maybe stroke over his head for us and
41:22just distract that front now this i feel well qualified for let's tickle your ears there's a
41:29good boy oh here's a good look done done done done done well done boy there so i'll just i wonder if
41:39you'd be happy to just uh would you be able to just how was the front like that and i'll just have a
41:43feel of his tummy that's fine so it's his hip and back end that was quite sore there's a good boy
41:50this little slow i know this is him saying i don't want to swear but i don't know yes i know
42:02lovely right you can relax last job is i'll get a weight and then he can chill out okay let's pop him
42:09on to that good boy there we go nice and relaxed nice and relaxed there we go there there 5.2 lovely
42:23whoop he's gone challenge is can we get him back in his basket
42:31now then i'll just let him have a little sniff around
42:43what's this wow this looks exciting doesn't it hey look here we go if i put a little smear of
42:55liver paste in there well oh yeah he's not daft
43:09i'm angry and distressed but i just still want that liver stuff yeah that's the ticket
43:16that is the ticket finished off a successful appointment all round badges in his basket
43:22and i think i may have passed my probation do you want to stay forever i just you're just amazing
43:28i just do the cats that's all i want to do no i love the doggies as well well done yeah that was
43:33good that was good that's how we like a consult to go when they're a bit spiky if you try and put your
43:38pace onto him he will lose his mind bring in some nice pheromone sprays bring in some treats bring in
43:44some kind gentle handling and you know we've got the job done and he's happy and yes he wouldn't be
43:50eating his liver paste if he wasn't happy exactly like nope absolutely not what a good boy
43:58for the final appointment of the day a familiar face is making a triumphant return
44:04after her emergency admit last week lotta's bouncing back through the door for a check-up
44:09there you go there you go ah hello lotta we've been expecting you hello elizabeth come and have a
44:17seat hi hello what are you doing come on come on come on come sit down do you want to come up here yes
44:23come up here good girl now lotta look at me what was going on last week hmm an absolute kerfuffle
44:32and somehow you managed to survive but it's a very naughty thing to do no look at me look at me
44:39lotta lotta lotta this was horrendous last week what happened well it was in fact a birthday celebration
44:45for my daughter they were also focused on birthday cake very rainy last sunday and um we have a wood
44:52burner we have wood in the corner of the room and i knew that she had the tendency to pick chip at the
44:58wood but unfortunately taking our eye off the ball a little bit she chipped and chipped and chipped
45:03although we keep kept pulling her away and the next morning she was definitely quite poorly and couldn't
45:10go to the toilet um rather reluctant to get out of bed we thought this is not not like a lot at all
45:18so you came to the vet thinking what what has she done well um initially thought she was thoroughly
45:24sort of constipated impacted here and um he said leave her with us which is what we did quite worrying
45:31because she looked so sort of subdued and yes must have been very upsetting yes it was horrid actually
45:38so yeah we left it with andy and then fortunately he was able to give her an enema
45:44i think that was rather a grisly outcome for the nursing staff but are you apologetic now madam
45:50would you like to say i'm very sorry mum and no more wood chips for breakfast lunch or tea no so you're
45:56just here for a check-up after last week yeah check-up yeah good she's absolutely fine
46:01well we're ready to go again yeah that was something new we don't want to see you again thank you
46:07hello pushkins oh dear me you are a little grumpy
46:19good girl next time oh my now i'm in love with her
46:40a boston terrier undergoes surgery to treat an ulcer makes me feel a bit wobbly yeah it's quite
46:48intense isn't it when you see it and i explore the benefits of complementary therapies for pets
46:56how much longer do you think you might be doing the higher therapy i think while she's still enjoying
47:01it and while we're still seeing improvements then we'll stick with it it's just like a big bath for her
47:10so
47:22OK, be brave. Be brave.
