Qantas Boss Vanessa Hudson has broken from her European holiday to apologise to customers over this week's data breach. Lawyers believe the airline could face legal action over a cyber-attack affecting millions of its customers. Qantas says it is working with the government and federal police to hunt down the cyber criminals responsible.

00:04But when a cyber attack hit, it took the Qantas boss,
00:08who was on leave in Greece, days to front the cameras.
00:12We are focused next week in making sure our customers understand the specific
00:16information that pertains to them that may have been breached.
00:20Vanessa Hudson defended call centre staff in the Philippines who were tricked by
00:24hackers into handing over access to the third party
00:28platform, which held personal details of six million customers.
00:32No, we've actually got quite significant training
00:36for our employees right across the group. Unfortunately
00:40they were able to infiltrate in this manner, but as soon as we
00:44detected it, we secured it. In this kind of circumstance where there's
00:48six million people potentially affected, it is a vehicle for a class action.
00:52While customers could be in line for compensation, lawyers say
00:56no further reform is needed.
00:58The settings in the law aren't right
01:00because companies aren't taking these risks seriously enough.

01:04stolen in the Qantas hack, like
01:06names, birthdates and even email
01:08addresses, cannot just be changed
01:10like a password or
01:12PIN number can. The advice of experts
01:14to those affected is simply
01:16to be aware of suspicious
01:18activity and
01:20not respond to unsolicited
01:22texts, calls and emails.
