Cyber security experts are urging Qantas customers to be alert to scams and hacking attempts following the data breach at the airline affecting millions of people. Qantas revealed it had come under cyber attack on Monday when hackers gained access to a customer call centre in the Philippines.
00:00Jack Allison is one of the six million Qantas customers caught up in a major cyber attack on the airline.
00:10I can't go and change my name or my date of birth or my address and I think they're just not treating this with the level of respect that it deserves.
00:19He's convinced the criminal hackers have already tried to exploit his data.
00:24I got the email from Qantas telling me that I was affected and at about the same time at 6.30pm I got a notification from MyGov telling me that someone had tried to log into my account.
00:37In emails sent to affected customers last night, CEO Vanessa Hudson confirmed an initial investigation has found hackers had accessed customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates and frequent flyer numbers.
00:51The email warns customers to be alert and cautious and says the airline is deeply sorry.
00:58Those six million people will be targeted in related type scams so whether it's MyGov or people contacting individuals claiming they're from Qantas or from a bank.
01:09Experts expect the hackers, believed to be part of the scattered spider group, to ask Qantas to pay a ransom.
01:16If they can't get it out of Qantas then the other option is to package it up and sell it on the dark web.
01:20Dozens of Qantas customers have contacted the ABC demanding answers from the airline.
01:25Yet despite repeated requests for Qantas to put up a spokesperson for interview, it seems the airline has gone to ground.
01:33Crisis Management 101 is being present and on the ball and ready to answer questions.
01:38So we really want to see strong leadership here and have spokespeople ready to answer our questions right from customers all the way through to media.
