00:30We're coming round to meet you a long way on.
00:42Across 20 years and three incredible adventures, we've travelled to some of the farthest flung corners of the world.
00:48This is us on the road, Charlie. This is us on the way, man.
00:51Yet we've never properly explored the countries on our own doorstep.
00:55OK, here we go. Into Europe. Let's do it.
01:00So we're spending the summer riding a spectacular loop through 17 of our closest neighbours.
01:05Starting at my house in Scotland, we'll cross over to the continent, travel up through the Nordics and into the Arctic Circle,
01:12down to the Baltics before winding our way through the Alps and across France, returning home about two months later.
01:21And we're going to throw caution to the wind by doing the journey on temperamental 50-year-old bikes that have been given a new lease of life.
01:28My bike's making funny noise.
01:32Riding alongside them on a third motorcycle are cameraman Claudio and Max.
01:36And the guys will also be taking personal diary cameras.
01:40Russ and I will be following behind with a small crew and two electric trucks, only meeting up with the guys when necessary.
01:46So, this summer, Europe is our playground.
01:51Wow!
01:53And we're going to follow our noses and see what we find on the open road.
02:04We're in Austria now.
02:06Feeling a little packish.
02:08What's Austria's national dish?
02:10Well, I think it's a schnitzel and an apple strudel.
02:14Oh, yeah, schnitzel and strudel.
02:18To end our trip on a high, we're heading to Europe's biggest mountain range, the Alps.
02:24Starting in Austria, we'll sweep through Switzerland and then up through France on our way home.
02:30First off, a quick pit stop in Vienna.
02:35Oh, Vienna!
02:37Hi.
02:40My butt is really sore.
02:43Okay, look, I'll move forward with you and then you can pat my butt.
02:47Is that better?
02:48That's better.
02:54What's this river called again?
02:56Oh, the Danube.
02:57The Danube.
02:58Yeah, the Danube.
02:59Oh, yes.
03:00This is what I imagined it looked like.
03:10Yeah.
03:11Vienna.
03:13Here we are, Vienna.
03:15City of dreams, city of music, and fortunately for us, a city famous for its cakes.
03:21Oh, look at that.
03:22That was synchronized parking, that was.
03:25We've been told about an interesting little cafe that serves some of the best pastries in town.
03:31It's run by old age pensioners.
03:33Is this it?
03:34Look, with the little granny face.
03:36Oh, brilliant.
03:37Run by the old ladies.
03:38Or maybe old men too.
03:39I don't know.
03:40Oh, look, it's got old furniture in it.
03:41That's wicked.
03:42It's your first time here.
03:43Yes.
03:44Yeah, first time.
03:45Should we sit at this one?
03:46Sit at this one.
03:47Oh, wonderful.
03:49Oh, lovely.
03:50Look around.
03:51It's Grandmaster Steining Road.
03:52We are coffee for old and young.
03:53Yeah.
03:54Old and young work together.
03:55Do you enjoy it?
03:56Yes, I like it.
03:57Yeah.
03:58Yes, I like it.
03:59Ten years.
04:00Ten years you've been here?
04:02Yes.
04:03Now, can I bring you a special coffee?
04:05Yes, please.
04:06Oh, yes, I'll go to you and look at the coffee.
04:07Go on, Charlie.
04:08I will ask you, please sit down now and you will ask me.
04:11Okay.
04:12You are a motorbike?
04:14Yes, we ride motorbikes.
04:16Oh, when I was young, I looked every for a man for a motorbike.
04:20Oh.
04:21I didn't find one.
04:22Oh, you've got them now.
04:23You've got two now.
04:24No, no, I'm too old.
04:29Hello.
04:30Hiya.
04:31Hello.
04:32Hiya.
04:33Yeah.
04:34Could I take a piece of this, please?
04:35Apple strudel.
04:36Apple strudel.
04:37Yeah, please.
04:39Cream.
04:40Yes, please.
04:41Cream.
04:42Yes.
04:43We have an expression in Scotland.
04:44Eat up your aunties.
04:46This is a bit like that.
04:47Eat up your aunties.
04:52Oh.
04:53Is that apple strudel?
04:54Yeah, this is apple strudel.
04:55Can I have a bite?
04:59Oh, it's very, very good.
05:02It's good.
05:03Isn't it?
05:04Yeah.
05:05Mmm.
05:06Mmm.
05:07Bloody hell.
05:08That's a good one.
05:09Here are our special cake from Vienna.
05:12Oh, oh.
05:13Is that custard?
05:14Oh, my God.
05:15Is that custard?
05:16Inside is hot plum marmalade and hot vanilla sauce.
05:20Vanilla sauce.
05:21Oh, my gosh.
05:22Oh, my God.
05:23Is that like...
05:24That's...
05:25No, that's...
05:26Oh.
05:27Oh.
05:28Right down the jeans.
05:29Oh, it's good crème anglaise.
05:30Oh, my God.
05:31It's so good.
05:32They have the washing machine.
05:33Yes.
05:34Grandma, could you just throw my in the quick cycle?
05:37Yes, I did it early surely.
05:38Thank you so much.
05:39Oh, my God.
05:42Let's scale it with the devil.
05:44Thank you very much.
05:45Love it.
05:46It even looks like something your granny would have made for you.
05:55Look.
05:56Isn't it?
05:57Yeah.
05:58So, basically, there are two motivations.
06:09One is financial poverty.
06:11If you're 65 plus and need some additional income...
06:15There is nothing.
06:16There's nothing.
06:17Nothing.
06:18Yeah.
06:19And the other one is social poverty.
06:20Yeah.
06:21When people stay active, having meaningful activity to do, then they stay healthy.
06:27Healthy.
06:28Yeah.
06:29Congratulations.
06:30Well, you're making it work.
06:31So, good for you and helping so many people along the way.
06:35And your custard is outrageously good.
06:37You like it?
06:38Yeah.
06:39The custard's very, very good.
06:40Of course it is.
06:41It's like granny's custard.
06:42Granny's custard, yeah.
06:43Fantastic.
06:44Oh, sorry.
06:45Oh, no, no, no.
06:46That's fine.
06:47I didn't leave any...
06:48No, no.
06:49Not really any crown on glues for you.
06:50But the...
06:51What a great idea.
06:52Brilliant.
06:53Absolutely brilliant.
06:54This way, right?
06:57Yeah.
06:58Here, Ewan, you take the lead, Ewan.
07:05I've just scrammed so much food.
07:08I know, me too.
07:09I feel absolutely...
07:10I'm completely like I've got a food baby.
07:13Yeah, I'd like to just go like that.
07:15I'd like to pass out right now.
07:17Yeah.
07:24Time for some proper Austrian culture.
07:26And for that, we're going up into the mountains.
07:31During the summer, this amazing landscape
07:33becomes a natural backdrop for an array of plays and concerts.
07:37And we've been invited to a sneak preview
07:39of a brand new opera being staged on a lake.
07:44It is such a beautiful part of the world, Austria.
07:47I love it.
07:51This opera is about a merman who falls for a salt maiden
07:54and is loosely based on an old folk tale
07:57about how valuable salt deposits were found in this very lake.
08:00Wow, look at this.
08:01This is nice, isn't it?
08:02Yeah.
08:03Oh, look, there she is out there.
08:04That's the salt woman, right?
08:05That's who the merman's looking for.
08:06There's the other cast.
08:07Wow.
08:08In the boot.
08:09Look at that.
08:10I sent this legend to Vanni Moretto, and he decided to compose an opera for us.
08:25And I found Andreas, who is our director.
08:31Thanks for letting us watch today.
08:32It's the first rehearsal, and you know, the first rehearsal at the lake.
08:35Yeah.
08:36Is it exciting?
08:37Yeah.
08:38Great.
08:39Good luck.
08:40Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
08:57That's the most basic one.
09:00This is exactly where the legend takes place.
09:04So, you know, it's something really exciting in a way to be here.
09:09Okay, and go.
09:23Thank you. Let's do it until this point.
09:28Johanna, like this boat, a little bit back.
09:32And go.
09:34He's the one who's seen the...
09:40Right. The water man.
09:41Right. He's seen something in the water that is strange.
09:47Not on the line between me and the singer. Please, get out of the line.
09:52Please, get out.
09:53You did a great job with the boat. Thank you.
10:04You were, like, hauling it back on your own at one point. Very strong.
10:07Very strong.
10:19Okay, let's stop here. That's a good break.
10:22Brilliant. Well, thank you, guys.
10:23Break a leg. Have a great time.
10:25And thank you very much for letting us observe this morning.
10:27That was really special. Thank you.
10:29Now that is the way to see an opera.
10:32It's magnificent. I really, really like it here.
10:38This is some of the most staggeringly beautiful landscape in the world.
10:43And while I'm here, I can't miss the opportunity to practice a new passion of mine.
10:50I'm very excited about the paragliding tomorrow.
10:53I'm absolutely passionate about it because my dream, ultimately,
10:56is to climb the mountains of Scotland and fly down them.
10:59That's why I really want to learn to be a good pilot.
11:01Today is the day.
11:04I took a course and I went up to Santa Barbara and I've learned to paraglide and I'm not quite certified yet, but I'm close.
11:23I'll start up here, fly out here, lose height here, down, and then land somewhere over there.
11:41Oh, the conditions are gorgeous.
11:44Hee hee hee hee hee!
11:47Okay. Here we are.
11:50This is the launch site here.
11:52Oh, here we go. It's a bit higher than Santa Barbara.
11:55Shall I do some lefts and rights to wait for you?
11:58Yeah. No, you don't have to. You'll be descending.
11:59No, I don't need to. You'll be right behind me.
12:01As soon as you're okay, I'll go.
12:03Okay.
12:04And if I fluff up a launch, well, then you're on your own.
12:07What am I doing? Who thought this was a good idea?
12:09Make sure I'm not twisted up.
12:16We're doing tandem, so I thought it'd be nice to fly with Ewan.
12:20And I was down there and now I'm up here and I was all confident down there.
12:25It's so super lightweight. There's no clips.
12:28This just hooks in there like that.
12:32And then this goes over to lock it.
12:35A little elastic and that's it.
12:36So Ewan, you can take off whenever you're comfortable with whatever wind you like.
12:41He's done a couple of hundred of these, so I'm quite happy.
12:43All right.
12:44Wow.
12:45How beautiful.
12:46We can be stronger than life exists.
12:47So with steering, and a paraglider, you lean first.
12:53All right, wow, how beautiful.
13:13So with steering and a paraglider, you lean first, that instigates the turn, a little
13:18bit of brake, and you come around. Relax your legs, you, and relax. Look where you are.
13:26Woo, Charlie! All right, mate? All right, yeah, just hanging around. I thought I'd just drop
13:35in. Nice to see you up here.
13:39People keep talking about how pots don't make. Oh, my God. Wow, it's like a religious
13:49experience. It is. We don't belong. I just love it so much. Oh, wow.
13:55Maybe we can fly to the landing field.
14:17Oh, my God.
14:19No way. Wow. Feet up. Yep.
14:29Okay. Okay? Yeah.
14:32Me feel a bit ill when they were going in those real tight circles. I felt a bit like,
14:36a bit woozy, I felt there, but that was amazing.
14:49Here comes Ewan.
14:54Woo! Charlie! It is incredible, isn't it?
14:57Oh, man. I mean, we saw each other up there a little bit, but we ended up in different
15:01heights and stuff, so... Yeah. No, but you look good up there, right?
15:05So, Charlie, if you can gather it... Yep.
15:08Gather it up a little, just so it's over the top a little bit, that's it.
15:12Do you want me to zip it up from this end? Yeah.
15:18All that camping has helped with the packing, Ewan.
15:22Maybe that's why I like tents so much, because they remind me of paragliders.
15:26Isn't it amazing? Look, you stick it in the back of your car.
15:30That's your aircraft in there. That's it.
15:33How was that? Oh, my God. It was so beautiful. I had a little cry. I was like, I got so moved.
15:45I loved it so much. It was the highest take-off I've ever done. That was a heart-stopper.
15:50It was funny, when I was going tandem, he double-checked all the clips. I couldn't help it.
15:55I had to check for myself as well, just to double-check that he double-checked.
16:00We've been told about an artist who works out of a castle in this part of Switzerland.
16:10He goes by the name Not Vital, and was part of a group of New York artists in the 80s, which included Warhol and Basquiat.
16:21This is definitely off the beaten track.
16:24Oh, wow. Look at it up there.
16:25Yeah, that's a big old house.
16:32And is this his gallery, or he lives up here?
16:35I'm not sure. I think a bit of both.
16:42Hello.
16:44And you live up here?
16:45Sometimes.
16:46Sometimes.
16:50Would you?
16:51I would, yes.
16:52I would, yes.
16:53I would, yes.
16:54Yeah.
16:55Excellent, I would.
16:56Wow.
16:57Okay.
16:58I love that on this end there.
16:59That's called unpleasant object.
17:01Unpleasant object.
17:03Are we allowed to go and have a look?
17:04You want to go out?
17:05Yeah.
17:06We'd love to see it.
17:08Well, look at this.
17:101900, this person came here.
17:12His name was Lindner.
17:13He invented Odol.
17:14Mouthwash.
17:15Yeah.
17:16As he became so rich with that, that he could do whatever.
17:21Oh.
17:22So he came here, he saw this ruin, bought it, and built it for 16 years.
17:28So this castle was built on mouthwash, on the fresh breath of Germans.
17:34That's brilliant.
17:38Oh.
17:40Yeah.
17:41Those are testicles.
17:42If you see the David of Michelangelo in Florence.
17:45Yeah.
17:46Let's say the David would be as big as the palazzo, his balls would have this size.
17:52It's nice to see them.
17:55What a place.
17:56It's incredible.
17:58So, like, I made this whole tree, this cast in bronze.
18:01Wow.
18:04Beautifully done.
18:05Wow, that's big.
18:06How many pieces did you make it?
18:07I don't know.
18:08I mean, quite a few, I guess, no?
18:10But it's technique, and technique is not so important.
18:12Yeah.
18:13Right.
18:14So it's Michelangelo already.
18:16Technique's not important.
18:18Technique's not important.
18:20Okay, let's go.
18:21We take the elevator.
18:22Oh, that's an elevator.
18:23Okay, don't...
18:24Of course there is.
18:25That is just hilarious.
18:27Wow.
18:29So the owner, Lindner, he wanted to be an organist, no?
18:32Well, this is where he was going to play.
18:34Yeah, this is the organ.
18:36It's the biggest private organ in Europe.
18:41Jeez.
18:42Look at the pipes in here.
18:43They thought, before, everything has to be straight.
18:46Yeah.
18:47It can be like spaghetti, so the air goes through.
18:50Yeah.
18:51And so they could compact the whole organ.
18:54And when was this organ built?
18:561916, the year that he died.
18:58Is it playable?
18:59Yeah.
19:00Well, let me have a little...
19:01Have a go, Charlie.
19:02Have a go.
19:03I've never ever played one of these before.
19:11Wow.
19:12This is Benjamin Britten's.
19:13Wow.
19:14This was his instrument because he composed here.
19:17Just played Benjamin Britten's piano.
19:36There you go.
19:37Beautiful.
19:38So we put this down.
19:39We can just leave it out.
19:40I'm worried about that.
19:41Okay, Charlie, I think you're right.
19:42We should put it down.
19:43Why?
19:44I'm worried about that.
19:45We're worried about that.
19:46Let me just pop it down.
19:47But it's made in England.
19:48Well, exactly.
19:49That's why we should leave.
19:50Yeah.
19:51Have you ever owned an English car?
19:53He just appeared.
20:18Look at this.
20:32If you like mountains, this is it.
20:34Wow.
20:35And this is the national park.
20:37Yeah.
20:38It's lovely traveling and exploring.
20:40Yeah, traveling is fantastic.
20:41Maybe they built these towers just for the view.
20:43No.
20:44No, I'm joking.
20:45The view was of no interest.
20:47The idea of looking out is new.
20:50In the old days, you were either out or you're inside.
20:54This idea of looking at the landscape, that's decadent.
20:58Oh, how funny.
20:59Decadent.
21:00It was a great pleasure to meet you.
21:03Really, absolutely fantastic.
21:05It's such a pleasure.
21:06I really enjoyed your company.
21:14I took a photo of the rainbow and it looks like there's
21:16coming out of the camel's pelvis.
21:18Oh, yeah.
21:24Wow.
21:25That was quite a mind-blowing experience.
21:29He was a character.
21:30It made me laugh.
21:31He had a very comic tone of phrase.
21:33It's quite funny when we were by the organ, you know, that organ player.
21:38Where did he come from?
21:39I mean, it was like he was waiting in the wings.
21:41It was so weird.
21:42Yeah.
21:43He looked like he was from a 1950s Italian art movie.
21:51Before we leave the Alps, we'll stay the night at our cameraman Claudio's house.
21:54What an amazing place to grow up.
21:55Bloody hell.
21:56Look at that.
21:57Oh, and you Claudio's putter-bucking.
21:58Look at that.
21:59This is Claudio's Long Way Round bike.
22:00Yeah.
22:01Yeah.
22:02They were such great bikes.
22:03I still love them to bits.
22:04Hello.
22:05Oh, how are you?
22:0692 years old.
22:07I know nothing to 92.
22:08I've seen the Olympic Games.
22:09Olympic Games.
22:10Oh, yes.
22:11Nice to meet you.
22:12I've seen you.
22:13I've seen you.
22:14I've seen you.
22:15I've seen you.
22:16I've seen you.
22:17I've seen you.
22:18I've seen you.
22:19I've seen you.
22:20I've seen you.
22:21I've seen you.
22:22I've seen you.
22:23I've seen you.
22:24I've seen you.
22:25I've seen you.
22:26I've seen you.
22:27I've seen you.
22:28I've seen you.
22:29I've seen you.
22:30I've seen you.
22:31I've seen you.
22:32Olympic Games.
22:33Yeah.
22:34Yeah.
22:35Gold medal.
22:3620 years of travelling with you Claudio and we've never seen your house and you've
22:40always spoken about it.
22:41It's so nice to be here.
22:43Gosh.
22:44I love all the wood.
22:45Yeah, that's typical here because in winter it's bloody cold.
22:48Cold.
22:49Yes.
22:51Thanks.
22:52Goodnight.
22:53Thank you very much.
22:54Goodbye.
22:55Bye-bye.
22:56It's pretty early in the morning and I didn't sleep very well.
23:07The thing that kept me awake all night was this little puppy.
23:12There's the culprit.
23:14Six o'clock it was a concophony of bells.
23:17Apparently you get used to it.
23:19Bye guys.
23:20Bye-bye.
23:21After you Charlie.
23:22We're about to leave Switzerland but not before we've tried our hand at one more super local
23:37sport.
23:38Hornison otherwise known as farmer's golf.
23:41Oh I've got neutral there.
23:42That's not good.
23:43I've noticed they don't go round the corner so well and neutral these bikes.
23:45You know what it reminds me of guys.
23:46I know Sally Gap in the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland.
23:52What the hell?
23:53I don't know.
23:54I don't know.
23:55I don't know.
23:56I don't know that one.
23:57It's very Glen Cole.
23:58Okay.
23:59I don't know.
24:00I don't know.
24:01I don't know.
24:02I don't know.
24:03I don't know.
24:04I don't know.
24:05I don't know that one.
24:06I don't know.
24:07I don't know.
24:08I don't know.
24:09I don't know.
24:10I don't know.
24:11I don't know.
24:12I don't know that one.
24:13It's very Glen Cole.
24:15It's very Glen Cole.
24:16It's very Glen Cole.
24:26Okay.
24:27Here we go.
24:28We don't know exactly what it is.
24:30We're going to find out.
24:31This is where JK Rowling got the Harry Potter Quidditch thing.
24:35Oh is it?
24:36I don't know.
24:37I'm just guessing.
24:38Did you just make that up?
24:39I just made it up.
24:40Okay.
24:41Straight out of the Book of Borman.
24:42Yeah.
24:45Oh look at the thing.
24:47Look at that weird shooty thing.
24:49That's the bit where they slush.
24:52Oh wow.
24:55Those are the sticks.
24:56Yes.
24:57I wasn't expecting like a fishing rod.
24:58A big old wobbly thing.
25:00So we have here.
25:01This is the part where we hit a hornus.
25:04This is something like a hockey puck.
25:06Okay.
25:07A little bit smaller but harder.
25:08Right.
25:09It goes very fast.
25:10300 kilometers per hour.
25:11And they try to hit this hornus as far as possible.
25:14That's the puck.
25:15Yeah.
25:16Bit of clay.
25:17Where does it sit?
25:18Oh right at the end.
25:19Wow.
25:20Okay.
25:21What happens when you go into the trees?
25:22Yes.
25:23Death line for you.
25:24Death line.
25:25Okay.
25:26Death line.
25:27Death line.
25:28Okay.
25:29Here it goes.
25:30He reminds me of my neighbor Jimmy Wiley.
25:33Very like him.
25:35See I would definitely knock it off there by accident.
25:38Classic.
25:39Coming around.
25:40Shut the air.
25:41What?
25:42Over the cloud.
25:43Now he goes in the cloud.
25:46And now you can't see it anymore.
25:50I get a feeling that we should give it a go.
25:54You want to try?
25:55Yeah I'd love to try.
25:56Yeah.
25:57So you come around like this.
26:00Join Charlie and Ewan on rare sports around the world.
26:05Long way rare sport.
26:07When you go back you do slowly.
26:09Yeah.
26:10Get through the ball.
26:13Whoa!
26:16It's a natural talent.
26:18I think Charlie's found his colleague.
26:20I give you off the paper for coming to us.
26:24Well you know I don't come cheap.
26:27That's very kind.
26:28Well done.
26:29Very good.
26:30Well done.
26:32Ewan.
26:35That's no joke once you get up here eh?
26:37How do I look?
26:38Do I look like I'm halfway on the pipe there?
26:40I think you need to be in the middle of the wood.
26:43Am I not in the middle?
26:44No here.
26:45That's the middle there.
26:46Okay.
26:47Okay.
26:48Oh look.
26:49He is the trainer now.
26:53Not with force.
26:54Not with force.
26:55Not with force.
26:56Not with force.
26:57I shouldn't use the force?
26:58Is that what you're saying?
26:59Don't use the force.
27:06Good!
27:07Perfect.
27:08Right down the middle, Ewan.
27:11Well done.
27:12I did use the force.
27:13I did use the force.
27:14Hey, two natural talents eh?
27:15We have two players more.
27:17Yeah.
27:18Two players more today.
27:19Thanks guys.
27:20That was brilliant.
27:21I really enjoyed that.
27:22It was great.
27:23We should just stay here and carry on this.
27:24I like the idea of the game, didn't you?
27:26I'm interested to see it.
27:27Very cool.
27:28Look how far away they're going.
27:29They're miles away.
27:30In the defence, you have to make sure that no hornus falls to the ground before you stop it.
27:37Okay.
27:38Look at the dents on here.
27:39That's solid wood.
27:40No wonder they wear helmets.
27:41Yes.
27:42Oh, that's a monster.
27:43Oh, yes, he's done it.
27:44He went that way.
27:45The board went that way.
27:46Nice to meet you, man.
27:47Take care.
27:48Thank you so much.
27:49That was a weird sport we just witnessed.
27:50How did they come up with that whippy funny stick?
27:51God knows.
27:52What I love is the enthusiasm for it.
27:56We're on the home straight now, making a beeline north to Calais before we cross the channel
28:17in the morning.
28:18Welcome to France.
28:19That's it, Charlie.
28:20Oh, bloody hell.
28:21Wow.
28:22Holy hell, wow!
28:33This is our last country before we get home.
28:36We really are at the last leg now.
28:44This is France that we know and love.
28:47Wow, look at that.
28:48That's nice.
28:52This looks familiar, Charlie.
28:57I was here about 25 years ago.
29:00It's got an incredible Gothic cathedral.
29:03Well, should we stop off and stretch our legs?
29:06OK, let's do it.
29:08You think that's it? I don't know.
29:11Awesome, isn't it?
29:12Amazing, huh?
29:16I did a six-day trip round France
29:18and I remember having pictures of my bike
29:20with this in the background.
29:23And I wanted to be left alone,
29:24so I did a full-on, like, shave proper Mohican.
29:28And nobody spoke to me for five days.
29:30It was terrible. It was so lonely.
29:34Quite awe-inspiring when you see it from here, isn't it?
29:36The size of it.
29:37Let's have a little peek inside.
29:43Look at the glass.
29:44Color.
29:45Yeah. And the end.
29:47What an amazing feat to build something like this.
29:50But the intricate detail of everything is insane.
29:54Look at all these little carvings everywhere.
29:56The Masons were allowed to carve their own...
29:59Oh, their own faces.
30:00Their own faces as a kind of, as a signature.
30:04This is where they used to crown the French kings.
30:06That's insane.
30:15There's one for Telstra.
30:19My lovely sister.
30:20Okay.
30:35Go.
30:37Onwards and upwards.
30:40Calais.
30:41Our first sun post for Calais.
30:43Oh, yeah. Look at that.
30:44We've seen so much of France that you just wouldn't see if you sat on the motorway.
31:01I've really rather liked it.
31:02My bum, on the other hand, has had enough.
31:10I'd love to just wash my bike.
31:12Get all that oil off the side of it.
31:14Yeah.
31:16I'm sure there'll be a hose.
31:17Oh, sure.
31:22Oh.
31:23Oh, hello.
31:25Oh, it's lovely.
31:26Seriously.
31:29Wow.
31:32Holy moly.
31:34This is nice.
31:36What a great place to stay on our last night.
31:43Spot the change.
31:50It was still white underneath.
31:52I felt for sure it was just all rust.
31:55But actually, it was totally just surface rust.
31:58And nobody, including myself, had ever given it a wash.
32:02Look, it's white.
32:03I've got to get her looking white.
32:07She's the star of the show.
32:11She's the star.
32:14So, for our last meal together, I'm making leaf pasta and then we're doing this beef.
32:20So we'll pan-sear it and then put it in the oven.
32:23It is amazing, isn't it?
32:25I mean, it's not the longest mileage in the world, but a 50-year-old bike and the cold and the heat and the rain.
32:32Pretty impressive, I think.
32:34I'm so grateful to her, you know?
32:37God, it's a good bike, isn't it?
32:39God damnit, it's a good bike, isn't it?
32:42I just keep, I keep, when no one's around, I just keep going over there and I have a little look at her profile.
32:48She's so beautiful.
32:49She is so beautiful, this bike.
32:55The last two and a half months has been incredible.
32:58We've done a huge amount.
33:00And I've loved every minute of it.
33:01It's just been brilliant.
33:03Hanging out with Ewan and having that person on your back all the time.
33:06You're looking out for each other.
33:07I really, really like it.
33:08That's perfect.
33:12Ah!
33:13Beautiful.
33:22These are, I roasted them earlier.
33:24You just squidge them out.
33:25You just squidge them out.
33:26If you squash them and then cook raw garlic, it gives, sometimes gives a different kind of flavour.
33:31This gives it a more earthy flavour.
33:34I'm always going to do that now.
33:35And I'm always going to cook my new potatoes in dill.
33:40In dill.
33:41Those are two things I've learnt on this trip.
33:42And you have to let them rest, the potatoes.
33:44Yeah.
33:45So, yeah.
33:47Who wants a kiss?
33:48It's just after 6.30.
33:49We leave at 8.
33:50Go up to Calais.
33:51Get back to Charlie's house.
33:52Meet everybody.
33:53The mayor will be waiting for me.
33:54I can't wait to see her.
33:55I can't wait to be in her arms.
33:56And then tomorrow, ride back home to Scotland.
33:57Where we all started from.
33:58But this is it.
33:59This is the last day.
34:00Oh, no.
34:01I can't get my zip to go up.
34:02Isn't that funny?
34:03The last day.
34:04Oh, no.
34:05I can't get my zip to go up.
34:06Isn't that funny?
34:07Last day.
34:08Oh, oh, oh.
34:09I wonder what that was.
34:10Ha-ha-ha.
34:11I can't get my zip to go up.
34:12What was that?
34:13I was the last day.
34:14I can't get my zip to go up.
34:15Isn't that funny?
34:16It's the last day.
34:17Oh, no.
34:18I can't get my zip to go up.
34:19Isn't that funny?
34:20Last day.
34:21Oh, oh, oh.
34:22I wonder what that was.
34:24Ha-ha-ha.
34:25I wonder what that was.
34:50How do I look with my white mudguards?
34:52Wow, I didn't realise it was white.
34:55I didn't know they were white, I just thought they were rust.
34:58Yeah.
34:59That's so funny.
35:02I still can't quite believe it's the last day.
35:11There she is, there's the sea.
35:13Oh my gosh, that's the white cliffs of Dover, is it?
35:15Yeah.
35:16Is it?
35:17Yes.
35:18It's so close.
35:19My heart started going.
35:25I feel it inside.
35:29It's flowing.
35:33I'm finding it really difficult to remember everything that we've done on this trip.
35:37I mean, it's quite extraordinary.
35:40We've really packed it in.
35:41We've been carried around this huge journey on 50-year-old bikes.
35:45It's quite a long way.
35:50I've never been in most of the countries we went through before.
35:52I don't think I've ever been to Denmark.
35:54I don't think I've ever been to Denmark.
35:56You see the landscape change around you.
35:59Here we go.
36:00Here we go.
36:17It's a nice world of snow.
36:19We've experienced the elements.
36:26I've been attacked by mosquitoes in forests and pissing rain.
36:30They want my blood.
36:31Oh dear.
36:33My favourite night was camping on that island.
36:36And they left us there.
36:37We just sort of fell into a lot of stories.
36:41And you end up meeting extraordinary people.
36:46And there's something about that that feeds your soul.
36:53That's the technical term.
36:54You have to be open to the journey.
36:57You have to be open to your bike breaking down.
37:00And being stuck at the side of the road.
37:02Are you able to be my knight in shining armour?
37:05That was the spirit of the trip.
37:06That was the whole point.
37:07Go on old bikes that would slow us down a bit.
37:09So we would see more stuff.
37:11Have more of a laugh.
37:13And that's exactly what happened.
37:15Woo!
37:17Amazing!
37:24Oh man.
37:25The idea of riding the bike to your house.
37:27So exciting.
37:29It is cool.
37:30All the trips we've done.
37:31We've always finished somewhere else.
37:33Yeah.
37:34And now we're.
37:35You know.
37:36Back into the Channel Channel.
37:37Back to.
37:38Back to Britain.
37:39Long way home.
37:42Here we go.
37:54Fantastic.
37:55I almost fell over there.
37:56That would have been embarrassing.
37:57Yeah.
37:58Yeah.
37:59I saw that Charlie and Ewan the other day.
38:00Ewan fell flat on his face.
38:01Fell out on his arse.
38:02Yeah.
38:03Standing still.
38:04In a train.
38:05Yeah.
38:06Welcome to England.
38:07We hope you had a pleasant trip.
38:09Right.
38:10Now.
38:11On British soil.
38:12There we go.
38:13Oh no.
38:14We have to drive on the left.
38:15Oh my God.
38:16The left.
38:17The left.
38:18We're on the home straight to Charlie's house in Surrey.
38:21It won't be the end of the journey for me though.
38:23As tomorrow.
38:24I'll leave Charlie behind and set off for Scotland on my own.
38:30Well.
38:31In a few hours we'll be.
38:32At your house.
38:33We'll be at my house.
38:35But first though.
38:36We're going to meet up with some bikers.
38:38It's become a bit of a tradition.
38:40We're trying to coordinate all of the convoy people who have started to arrive.
38:49It's four minutes past one.
38:51That's normally a bit of a stickler for time.
38:54Here he is.
38:55Well done.
38:56You did it.
38:57We can hear you coming around the corner.
39:04Yeah?
39:05Yeah.
39:06The pipe.
39:17Wow.
39:18It's lovely to see all those bikes in my mirror.
39:22These guys are motorcyclists.
39:24Ewan was telling a story about when he was making the film.
39:27He was prohibited to ride a motorcycle.
39:30He said asking me not to be able to ride a motorcycle is like asking me not to listen to music.
39:35That's who these guys are.
39:39Oh man.
39:40I remember the ride into New York.
39:42I remember a very strong feeling of losing you and all the people.
39:46Yeah.
39:47Being on the road with Charlie is something that I share with him and no one else.
39:51You know.
39:52I'm in my mirror or I'm in his.
39:53It's so familiar.
39:54We've done so many thousands of miles like that.
39:57You know.
39:58I think as you get older, you're much more precious with the people that you spend time
40:02with.
40:03And Ewan is one of those people.
40:04There is something about being like a boy again.
40:06Out on our bikes as kids, you know, and meet up with mates in the street and just knock
40:10about.
40:11It's a bit like doing that as a grown up.
40:13I wasn't really going anywhere until we did the long way around.
40:16And I remember thinking that I'd let my family down.
40:21So I feel very grateful that I met Ewan.
40:25It's been amazing.
40:26It has.
40:27Thank you, Ewan.
40:28It's been great fun.
40:29Thank you, man.
40:34Well, that was a hell of a long way around to get to your house, Charlie.
40:37That's for sure.
40:39I suggest next time just the A1 or the M1 or something.
40:43The M6.
40:44This is my driveway just here.
40:45No way.
40:46Courtney.
40:47Hello, everybody.
40:48Oh, hey, hey, hey, hey.
40:49Oh, wow.
40:52Look at my beautiful wife.
40:57Oh, holy.
40:58Oh, dear.
40:59Oh, dear.
41:00Oh, dear.
41:01Oh, dear.
41:02Oh, dear.
41:03Oh, dear.
41:04Oh, dear.
41:05Oh, dear.
41:06Oh, dear.
41:07Oh, dear.
41:08Oh, dear.
41:09Oh, dear.
41:10Oh, dear.
41:11Oh, dear.
41:12Oh.
41:13Where is Mary?
41:27That was a very long wave.
41:40I love you.
41:43Good to see you.
41:48Hi, sweetheart.
41:52Hey, Dad.
41:53It was so lovely to see you.
41:55I've been waiting for you all morning.
41:58Oh, you're looking beautiful, Dad.
42:00You look so well.
42:04Oh, the tattoo.
42:06Oh, it's smaller than I thought it would be.
42:08Yeah, it looked bigger on there, actually.
42:10You went fast and you were second.
42:12What?
42:14Yeah, I've never seen Charlie's place.
42:16I'm going to get on my bike and ride to Scotland, but via Manchester, where I've got a plan so I don't have to ride the whole way.
42:21He-he-he-he.
42:22He-he-he.
42:23He-he-he.
42:24He-he-he.
42:25He-he-he.
42:26It's bonnie Scotland again.
42:27He-he-he.
42:28He-he-he.
42:29He-he-he.
42:30It's bonnie Scotland again.
42:31He-he-he.
42:32He-he-he.
42:33He-he-he.
42:34He-he-he.
42:35He-he-he.
42:36It's bonnie Scotland again.
42:37He-he-he.
42:38He-he-he.
42:39He-he-he.
42:40He-he-he.
42:41He-he-he.
42:42He-he-he.
42:43He-he-he.
42:44He-he-he.
42:45He-he-he.
42:47He-he-he.
42:48He-he-he.
42:49He-he-he.
42:50He-he-he.
42:51He-he-he.
42:52He-he-he.
42:53It's bonnie Scotland again.
42:54My friend Chris has been putting together a Volkswagen Beetle, so I'm going to put this bike up on a trailer and by night time we'll be home.
43:01Ha-ha!
43:03Whoo-hoo!
43:08I'll give Ewan a call and see how he's doing.
43:11Probably won't answer.
43:13It's, you know, it's all over.
43:16Charlie? Hey, man, how's it going?
43:19Oh, mate, I miss you too.
