00:30We're coming round to meet you a long way long.
00:42Across 20 years and three incredible adventures, we've travelled to some of the farthest flung corners of the world.
00:48This is us on the road, Charlie. This is us on the way, man.
00:51Yet we've never properly explored the countries on our own doorstep.
00:55OK, here we go. Into Europe. Let's do it.
01:00So we're spending the summer riding a spectacular loop through 17 of our closest neighbours.
01:05Starting at my house in Scotland, we'll cross over to the continent, travel up through the Nordics and into the Arctic Circle,
01:12down to the Baltics before winding our way through the Alps and across France, returning home about two months later.
01:21And we're going to throw caution to the wind by doing the journey on temperamental 50-year-old bikes that have been given a new lease of life.
01:28My bike's making funny noise.
01:32Riding alongside them on the third bike cycle are cameraman Claudio and Max.
01:36And the guys will also be taking personal diary cameras.
01:40Russ and I will be following behind with a small crew and two electric trucks, only meeting up with the guys when necessary.
01:46So, this summer, Europe is our playground.
01:51Wow!
01:53And we're going to follow our noses and see what we find on the open road.
02:04We're in Austria now.
02:06Feeling a little peckish.
02:08What's Austria's national dish?
02:10Well, I think it's a schnitzel and an apple strudel.
02:14Oh, yeah, schnitzel and strudel.
02:18To end our trip on a high, we're heading to Europe's biggest mountain range, the Alps.
02:24Starting in Austria, we'll sweep through Switzerland and then up through France on our way home.
02:30First off, a quick pit stop in Vienna.
02:35Oh, Vienna!
02:37Hi.
02:40My butt is really sore.
02:43Okay, look, I'll move forward, Ewan, and you can pat my butt.
02:47Is that better?
02:48That's better.
02:54What's this river called again?
02:56Oh, the Danube.
02:57The Danube.
02:58Yeah, the Danube.
02:59Oh, yes.
03:00This is what I imagined it looked like.
03:10Yeah.
03:11Vienna.
03:13Here we are, Vienna.
03:15City of dreams, city of music, and fortunately for us, a city famous for its cakes.
03:21Oh, look at that.
03:22That was synchronized parking, that was.
03:25We've been told about an interesting little cafe that serves some of the best pastries in town.
03:31It's run by old age pensioners.
03:33Is this it?
03:34A little granny face.
03:36Oh, brilliant.
03:37Run by the old ladies.
03:38Or maybe old men, too.
03:39I don't know.
03:40Oh, look.
03:41It's got old furniture in it.
03:42That's wicked.
03:43It's the first time here.
03:44Yes.
03:45Yeah, first time.
03:46Should we sit at this one?
03:47Yes, yes.
03:49Oh, lovely.
03:50It's my sustaining room.
03:51We are a cafe for old and young.
03:52Yeah.
03:53Old and young work together.
03:54Do you enjoy it?
03:55Yes, I like it.
03:56It's fun.
03:57Yeah.
03:58Yes, I like it.
03:59Ten years.
04:00Ten years you've been in?
04:01Yes.
04:02Now, what can I bring you a special coffee?
04:04Yes, please.
04:05Oh, yes, I'll go to you and look at the coffee.
04:07Go on, Charlie.
04:08I will ask you, please sit down now, and we will ask you.
04:11Okay.
04:12You are a motorbike?
04:14Yes, we ride motorbikes.
04:15Oh, when I was young, I looked every for a man for a motorbike.
04:19Oh.
04:20I didn't find one.
04:21You didn't find one?
04:22No.
04:23Oh, you've got them now.
04:24You've got two now.
04:25No, no, I don't.
04:30Hello.
04:31Hiya.
04:32Hello.
04:33Hiya.
04:34Yeah.
04:35Could I take a piece of this, please?
04:36Apple shrewdl.
04:37Apple shrewdl.
04:38Yeah, please.
04:40Cream, yes, please.
04:41Cream, yes.
04:42We have an expression in Scotland.
04:44Eat up your aunties.
04:46This is a bit like that.
04:47Eat up, you're at your aunties.
04:52Oh.
04:53Is that apple shrewdl?
04:54Yeah, this is apple shrewdl.
04:55Oh, can I have a bite?
05:01Oh, it's very, very good.
05:02It's good, isn't it?
05:03Yeah.
05:07Bloody hell.
05:08That's a good one.
05:09Here are our special cake from Birna.
05:12Oh, oh.
05:13Is that...
05:14Oh, my God.
05:15Is that custard?
05:16Inside is hot plum marmalade and hot vanilla sauce.
05:20Vanilla sauce.
05:21Oh, my gosh.
05:22Oh, my God.
05:23Is that like your...
05:24That's...
05:25No, that's...
05:26Oh.
05:27Oh.
05:28Right down the jeans.
05:29Oh, it's good creme anglaise.
05:30Oh, my God, it's so good.
05:31They have the washing machine.
05:33Yeah.
05:34Grandma, could you just throw my in the quick cycle?
05:37Yes, I did it early, surely.
05:38Thank you so much.
05:39Oh, my God.
05:42Let's get a bit of an apple.
05:44Thank you very much.
05:45Love it.
05:51It even looks like something your granny would have made for you.
05:55Look.
05:56Isn't it?
06:02So, basically, there are two motivations.
06:09So, one is financial poverty.
06:11If you're 65 plus and need some additional income...
06:15There's nothing.
06:16There's nothing.
06:17Nothing.
06:18And the other one is social poverty.
06:19Yeah.
06:20When people stay active, having meaningful activity to do,
06:25then they stay healthy...
06:26Healthy.
06:27...about life.
06:28Yeah.
06:29Congratulations.
06:30You're making it work.
06:31So, good for you.
06:32And helping so many people along the way.
06:34And your custard is outrageously good.
06:37You like it?
06:38The custard's very, very good.
06:39Of course it is.
06:40It's like granny's custard.
06:41Granny's custard, yeah.
06:42Fantastic.
06:43I've eaten all the custard.
06:44I'm so sorry.
06:45No, no, no, that's fine.
06:46I didn't leave any...
06:47No, no.
06:48Not really any creme anglaise for you.
06:49But the...
06:50What a great idea.
06:51Brilliant.
06:52Lovely.
06:53Absolutely brilliant.
06:54This way, right?
06:57Yeah.
06:58Here, Ewan, you take the lead, Ewan.
07:05I've just scrammed so much food.
07:07I know, me too.
07:08I feel absolutely...
07:10I'm completely like I've got a food baby.
07:12Yeah, I'd like to just go like that.
07:15I'd like to pass out right now.
07:17Yeah.
07:18Time for some proper Austrian culture.
07:26And for that, we're going up into the mountains.
07:31During the summer, this amazing landscape becomes a natural backdrop for an array of plays and concerts.
07:37And we've been invited to a sneak preview of a brand new opera being staged on a lake.
07:44It is such a beautiful part of the world, Austria.
07:47I love it.
07:49Whew!
07:50This opera is about a merman who falls for a salt maiden.
07:54And is loosely based on an old folk tale about how valuable salt deposits were found in this very lake.
08:02Wow, look at this.
08:03This is nice, isn't it?
08:04Yeah.
08:05Oh, look, there she is out there.
08:07That's the salt woman, right?
08:09That's who the merman's looking for.
08:12There's the other cast.
08:14Wow.
08:15In the boat.
08:16Look at that.
08:18I sent this legend to Vanni Moretto, and he decided to compose an opera for us.
08:25And I found Andreas, who is our director.
08:31Thanks for letting us watch today.
08:33It's the first rehearsal, and you know, the first rehearsal at the lake.
08:35Yeah.
08:36Is it exciting?
08:37Yeah.
08:38Great.
08:39Good luck.
08:40Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
08:44Oh, oh.
08:45Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, ahem.
08:56That's the most basic one.
09:00This is exactly where the legend takes place.
09:03So, you know, it's something really exciting in a way to be here.
09:09Okay, and go!
09:23Thank you, let's do it until this point.
09:26Thank you, thank you.
09:32And go!
09:33He's the one who's seen the...
09:39Right.
09:40..the water man.
09:41Right, he's seen something in the water that is strange.
09:46Not on the line between me and the singer.
09:48Please, get out of the line.
09:51Please, get out!
10:01You did a great job with the boat.
10:04Yeah.
10:05You were, like, holding it back on your own at one point.
10:07Very strong.
10:19Okay, let's stop here, that's a good break.
10:21Brilliant.
10:22Well, thank you, guys.
10:23Break a leg, have a great time.
10:25And thank you very much for letting us observe this morning.
10:27That was really special, thank you.
10:29Now that is the way to see an opera.
10:31It's magnificent.
10:32I really, really like it here.
10:38This is some of the most staggeringly beautiful landscape in the world.
10:43And while I'm here, I can't miss the opportunity to practice a new passion of mine.
10:47I'm very excited about the paragliding tomorrow.
10:52I'm absolutely passionate about it because my dream ultimately is to climb the mountains of Scotland and fly down them.
10:58That's why I really want to learn to be a good pilot.
11:01Today is the day.
11:02I took a course and I went up to Santa Barbara and I've learned to paraglide and I'm not quite certified yet but I'm close.
11:14Let's start up here, fly out here, lose height here, down, and then land somewhere over there.
11:36Oh, the conditions are gorgeous.
11:47Okay, here we are.
11:51This is the launch site here.
11:52Oh, here we go.
11:53It's a bit higher than Santa Barbara.
11:56Shall I do some lefts and rights to wait for you?
11:58No, you don't have to.
11:59No, I don't need to. You'll be right behind me.
12:00You'll be descending.
12:01As soon as you're okay, I'll go.
12:02Okay.
12:03And if I fly for the launch, well, then you're on your own.
12:08What am I doing?
12:09Who thought this was a good idea?
12:12Make sure I'm not twisted up.
12:17We're doing tandem, so I thought it'd be nice to fly with Ewan.
12:20And I was down there and now I'm up here and I was all confident down there.
12:25It's super lightweight, there's no clips.
12:29This just hooks in there, like that.
12:32And then this goes over to lock it.
12:35A little elastic and that's it.
12:37So Ewan?
12:38Yeah?
12:39You can take off whenever you're comfortable with whatever wind you like.
12:42He's done a couple of hundred of these, so I'm quite happy.
12:55All right.
12:56Wow.
12:57How beautiful.
12:58We can be stronger than life it feels.
13:13So with steering and a paraglider, you lean first.
13:16That instigates the turn, a little bit of break.
13:20And you come around.
13:22Relax your legs, Ewan, relax.
13:25Look where you are.
13:27Woo, Charlie!
13:31All right, mate?
13:32All right, yeah.
13:33Just hanging around.
13:34I thought I'd just drop in.
13:36Nice to see you up here.
13:37Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
13:38People keep talking
13:42About how pots don't make
13:45Oh, my God.
13:47Wow, it's like a religious experience, it is.
13:51We don't belong
13:52I just love it so much.
13:54Oh, wow.
13:56Whew.
13:57Maybe we can fly to the landing field.
14:17Oh, my God.
14:22Wow.
14:24Feeds up.
14:25Yep.
14:27Me feel a bit ill when they were going in those real tight circles.
14:35I felt a bit like...
14:37A bit woozy.
14:38I felt there.
14:39But that was...
14:40That was amazing.
14:52Here comes Ewan.
14:54Woo!
14:55Charlie!
14:56It is incredible, isn't it?
14:57Oh, man.
14:58I mean, we saw each other up there a little bit, but we ended up in different heights and stuff.
15:02Yeah.
15:03But you look good up there, right?
15:04Yeah.
15:06So, Charlie, if you can gather it...
15:07Yep.
15:08Gather it up a little...
15:09Just...
15:11So it's over the top a little bit, that's it.
15:14Do you want me to zip it up?
15:15Do you want me to zip it up from this end?
15:16Yeah.
15:18All that camping has helped with the packing, Ewan.
15:22Maybe that's why I like tents so much, because they remind me of paragliders.
15:27Isn't it amazing?
15:28Look, you stick it in the back of your car.
15:30That's your aircraft in there.
15:33That's it.
15:39How was that?
15:40Oh, my God.
15:41It was so beautiful.
15:42I had a little cry.
15:43I was like...
15:44I got so moved.
15:45I loved it so much.
15:46It was the highest take-off I've ever done.
15:48That was a heart stopper.
15:50It was funny.
15:51When I was going tandem, he double-checked all the clips.
15:54I couldn't help it.
15:55I had to check for myself as well, just to double-check that he double-checked.
16:06We've been told about an artist who works out of a castle in this part of Switzerland.
16:10He goes by the name Not Vital, and was part of a group of New York artists in the 80s, which included Warhol and Basquiat.
16:21This is definitely off the beaten track.
16:24Oh, wow. Look at it up there.
16:29Yeah, that's a big old house.
16:33And is this his gallery, or he lives up here?
16:36I'm not sure. I think a bit of both.
16:41Hello.
16:43And you live up here?
16:45Sometimes.
16:46Sometimes.
16:50Would you?
16:52I would, yes.
16:53Yeah, would you?
16:54Yeah.
16:56Wow.
16:57I love that on this end there.
16:59That's called unpleasant object.
17:01Unpleasant object.
17:03Are we allowed to go and have a look?
17:04You want to go up?
17:05Yeah, we'd love to see it.
17:08Well, look at this.
17:091900, this person came here.
17:12His name was Lindner.
17:13He invented Odol.
17:14Mouthwash.
17:15Yeah.
17:16As he became so rich with that, that he could do whatever.
17:21Oh.
17:22So he came here, he saw this ruin, bought it, and built it for 16 years.
17:27So this castle was built on mouthwash, on the fresh breath of Germans.
17:34That's brilliant.
17:38Oh.
17:39Yeah, those are testicles.
17:40Yeah.
17:41Those are testicles.
17:42If you see the David of Michelangelo in Florence.
17:45Yeah.
17:46Let's say the David would be as big as the palazzo, his balls would have this size.
17:51Oh.
17:52Oh.
17:53It's nice to see them.
17:55What a place.
17:56It's incredible.
17:58So, like, I made this whole tree, this cast in bronze.
18:01Wow.
18:03Beautifully done.
18:04Wow, that's big.
18:05How many pieces did you make it?
18:07I don't know.
18:08I mean, quite a few, I guess, no?
18:10But it's technique, and technique is not so important.
18:12Yeah, no.
18:13Right.
18:14So it's Michelangelo already.
18:16The technique.
18:17Technique's not important.
18:19Okay, let's go.
18:20We take the elevator.
18:21Oh, that's an elevator.
18:22Okay, don't...
18:23Of course there is.
18:24That is just hilarious.
18:27Wow.
18:28So the owner, Lingner, he wanted to be an organist, no?
18:32Well, this is where he was going to play.
18:34Yeah, this is the organ.
18:35It's the biggest private organ in Europe.
18:41Jeez.
18:42Look at the pipes in here.
18:43They thought before, everything has to be straight.
18:46Yeah.
18:47It can be like spaghetti, so the air goes through.
18:50And so they could compact the whole organ.
18:54And when was this organ built?
18:561916, the year that he died.
18:58Is it playable?
18:59Yeah.
19:00Well, let me have a little...
19:01Have a go, Charlie.
19:02Have a go.
19:03I've never ever played one of these before.
19:05Wow.
19:06This is Benjamin Britten's.
19:07Wow.
19:08This is Benjamin Britten's.
19:09Wow.
19:10This was his instrument because he composed here.
19:12He just played Benjamin Britten's piano.
19:13There you go.
19:14There you go.
19:15Beautiful.
19:16So we put this...
19:17Yeah, we can just leave it out.
19:18I'm worried about that.
19:19Okay, Charlie, I think you're right.
19:20We should put it down.
19:21Why?
19:22I'm worried about that.
19:23Why?
19:24I'm worried about that.
19:25We're worried about that part.
19:26Let me just...
19:27Yeah, pop it down.
19:28Because it...
19:29But it's...
19:30It's made in England.
19:31Yeah.
19:32Well, exactly.
19:33That's why we should leave.
19:34Yeah.
19:36Have you ever owned an English car?
19:37Have you ever owned an English car?
19:38Yeah.
19:39Yeah.
19:40Yeah.
19:41Yeah.
19:42It's made in England.
19:43Yeah.
19:44Well, exactly.
19:45That's why we should leave.
19:46Yeah.
19:47Have you ever owned an English car?
19:48Yeah.
19:49Yeah.
19:50Yeah.
19:51Yeah.
19:52Yeah.
19:53Yeah.
19:54Yeah.
19:55Yeah.
19:56Yeah.
19:57Yeah.
19:58Yeah.
19:59Yeah.
20:00Yeah.
20:01Yeah.
20:02Yeah.
20:03Yeah.
20:04Yeah.
20:05Yeah.
20:06Yeah.
20:07Yeah.
20:08Yeah.
20:09Yeah.
20:10Yeah.
20:11Yeah.
20:12Yeah.
20:13Yeah.
20:14Yeah.
20:15Yeah.
20:16Yeah.
20:17It just appears.
20:18Yeah.
20:19Yeah.
20:20Yeah.
20:21Yeah.
20:22Yeah.
20:23Yeah.
20:24Yeah.
20:25Yeah, yeah.
20:26Yeah.
20:27Yeah.
20:28Yeah.
20:29Look at this.
20:30If you like mountains, this is it.
20:33Wow.
20:34And this is the national park.
20:38Yeah, it's lovely traveling. Yeah, traveling is fantastic. Maybe they built these towers just for the view. No
20:45The view was of no interest the idea of looking out is new in the old days
20:51You were either out or you're inside this idea of looking at the landscape. That's that's decadent
21:02It was a great pleasure to meet you really absolutely fantastic such a pleasure
21:06I've really enjoyed your company
21:13I took a photo of the rainbow and it looks like it's coming out of the camel's pelvis. Oh, yeah
21:24Well that was quite a mind-blowing
21:28Experience he was a character made me laugh. He had a very comic turn of phrase
21:35It's quite funny when we were by the organ, you know that organ plan. Where'd he come from?
21:39I mean, it was like he was waiting in the wings. It was so weird. Yeah, he looked like he was from a
21:451950s Italian art movie
21:50Before we leave the Alps will stay the night at our cameraman Claudio's house
21:54What an amazing place to grow up bloody hell
22:03Look at that Owens you Claudio's putter-buffing
22:11Look at that. This is Claudio's long way round bike. Yeah, they were such great bikes. I still love them to bits. Hello
22:17Oh
22:3520 years of traveling with you Claudio and we've never seen your house and you've always spoken about it
22:41It's so nice to be here
22:43I love all the wood. Yeah, that's typical here because in winter it's bloody cold
22:48Yes, thank you. Okay. Tschüss. Good night. Thank you very much. Goodbye. Bye-bye
22:53It's
23:03It's pretty early in the morning and I didn't sleep very well thing that kept me awake
23:10All night was this little puppy
23:12There's the culprit six o'clock. It was a concophony of bells apparently you get used to it
23:18Oh
23:22Bye guys. Bye-bye
23:26After you Charlie
23:33We're about to leave switzerland but not before we've tried our hand at one more super local sport
23:39Hornison otherwise known as farmers golf
23:45Oh, I've got neutral there. That's not good
23:48I've noticed they don't go around the corner so well and neutral these bikes
24:02You know what it reminds me of guys
24:05uh
24:07I know sally gap in the wicklow mountains in ireland
24:11No, I don't know that one
24:15It's very Glen Cole
24:18Okay, here we go
24:28We don't know exactly what it is. We're gonna find out
24:31This is where jk rolling got the harry potter quidditch thing. Oh, is it? I don't know
24:37Did you just make that up? I just made it up. Yeah, okay straight out of the book of borman. Yeah
24:42Look at the thing look at that weird shitty thing. That's that's the bit where they slush oh wow
24:52Those are the sticks. Yeah, I wasn't expecting like a fishing a big old wobbly thing
24:59So we have here. This is the part where we hit a hornus. This is something like a hockey puck
25:05Okay, a little bit smaller, but harder, right? It goes very fast 300 kilometers per hour
25:11And they try to hit this hornus as far as possible. That's the puck. Yeah better clay
25:17Where does it sit? Oh, right at the end? Wow, okay. What happens when you go into the is death line for you?
25:23Death line
25:24Okay, death line
25:26The dead line
25:28Okay, here it goes
25:30He reminds me of my neighbor jimmy wiley
25:32Very like him
25:35See I would definitely knock it off there by accident classic. Yeah
25:39Coming around
25:43Over the cloud now. He goes in the cloud
25:48Now you can't see it anymore
25:51I get a feeling that we should we should give it a go. You want to try? Yeah, I'd love to try. Yeah
25:58So you come around like this
26:00Join Charlie and Ewan and rare sports around the world
26:06Long way rare sport when you go back you do slowly get through the ball
26:13Whoa
26:16It's a natural talent
26:18I think Charlie's found his colleague. I give you off at the paper for
26:22Coming to us
26:24Well, you know, I don't come cheap
26:26That's very kind
26:28Very good
26:29Well done
26:30Thank you
26:31Ewan
26:35That's no joke once you get up here, eh
26:37How do I look do I look like I'm halfway on the pipe there?
26:40I think you need to be in the middle of the wood. I know in the middle. No here. That's the middle there. Okay, okay
26:46I learned him surely
26:48Yes, you have to
26:50He is the trainer now
26:52Not with force
26:54Not with force
26:56I shouldn't use the force. Is that what you're saying?
26:58Don't use the force
27:00Well done
27:02I did use the force
27:04I did use the force
27:06Hey, two natural talents, eh
27:08We have two players more
27:10Yeah, two players more today
27:12Thanks guys, that was brilliant
27:14I really enjoyed that. That was great
27:16We should just stay here and carry on this
27:18I like the idea of the game, didn't you?
27:20No, I'm interested to see it
27:22Look how far away they're going
27:24They're miles away
27:26In the defense, you have to make sure that no hornus falls to the ground before you stop it
27:32Okay
27:34Look at the dents on here. That's solid wood
27:36No wonder they wear helmets
27:42Yes
27:44Oh, that's a monster
27:46Oh, yes
27:48He's done it
27:50He went that way, the board went that way
27:52Nice to meet you man, take care
27:54Thank you so much
28:00That was a weird sport we just witnessed
28:02How did they come up with that whippy funny stick?
28:04God knows
28:06What I love is the enthusiasm for it
28:10We're on the home straight now
28:12Making a beeline north to Calais
28:14Before we cross the channel in the morning
28:16Welcome to France
28:18That's it, Charlie
28:20Oh, bloody hell, wow
28:32This is our last country before we get home
28:34Yeah
28:36Where I really are on the last leg now
28:38Yeah
28:40I find my way
28:42This is France
28:44That we know and love
28:46Wow, wow, that's nice
28:48Beautiful life
28:50Be in the upper side of down
28:52Be in the inside alive
28:54But we breathe
28:56This looks familiar, Charlie
28:58I was here about 25 years ago
29:00It's got an incredible Gothic cathedral
29:02Well, should we stop off and stretch our legs?
29:04Okay, let's do it
29:06Do you think that's it?
29:08I don't know
29:10Awesome, isn't it?
29:12Amazing, huh?
29:14I did a six day trip round France
29:16And I remember having pictures of my bike with this in the background
29:20And I wanted to be left alone
29:22So I did a full-on, like, shave proper Mohican
29:26And nobody spoke to me for five days
29:28It was terrible, it was so lonely
29:32Quite awe-inspiring when you see it from here, isn't it?
29:34The size of it
29:36Let's have a little peek inside
29:42Look at the glass colour
29:43Yeah, and the end
29:45What an amazing feat
29:47To build something like this
29:49But the intricate detail of everything is insane
29:53Look at all these little carvings everywhere
29:55The masons were allowed to carve their own
29:57Oh, their own faces
29:59Their own faces as a kind of, as a signature
30:03This is where they used to crown the French kings
30:05That's insane
30:13There's one for Tulsa
30:17My lovely sister
30:33Okay, go
30:35Onwards and upwards
30:39Calais, our first signpost for Calais
30:41Oh yeah, look at that
30:55We've seen so much of France
30:57That you just wouldn't see
30:59If you sat on the motorway
31:01I really rather liked it
31:03My bum, on the other hand, has had enough
31:05I'd love to just wash my bike
31:11Get all that oil off the side of it
31:13Yeah
31:14I'm sure there'll be a hose
31:16Oh, sure
31:17Sure
31:21Oh
31:22Oh, hello
31:23Oh, it's lovely
31:25Seriously
31:26Wow
31:31Holy moly
31:33This is nice
31:34What a great place to stay on our last night
31:42Spot the change
31:43It was still white underneath
31:49It was still white underneath
31:51I felt for sure it was just all rust
31:54But actually, it was totally just surface rust
31:57And nobody, including myself, had ever given it a wash
32:01But look, it's white
32:05I've got to get her looking white
32:06She's the star of the show
32:07She's the star
32:10She's the star
32:13So, for our last meal together
32:15I'm making leaf pasta
32:16And then we're doing this beef
32:18So we'll pan-sear it
32:20And then put it in the oven
32:23It is amazing, isn't it?
32:24I mean, it's not the longest mileage in the world
32:27But a 50-year-old bike
32:28And the cold and the heat and the rain
32:31Pretty impressive, I think
32:32I'm so grateful to her, you know
32:34God, it's a good bike, isn't it?
32:38God damnit
32:39It's a good bike, isn't it?
32:42I just keep
32:43When no one's around
32:44I just keep going over there
32:45And a little look at her profile
32:46She's so beautiful
32:48She's so beautiful, this bike
32:54The last two and a half months
32:56Has been incredible
32:57We've done a huge amount
32:58And I've loved every minute of it
33:00It's just been brilliant
33:01Hanging out with Ewan
33:02And having that person on your back all the time
33:04And looking out for each other
33:06I really, really like it
33:09That's perfect
33:11Ah!
33:12Beautiful
33:21These are... I roasted them earlier
33:23You just squidge them out
33:24You just squidge them out
33:25If you squash them and then cook raw garlic
33:27It sometimes gives a different kind of flavour
33:30This gives it a more earthy flavour
33:32I'm always going to do that now
33:34Try a piece
33:35And I'm always going to cook my new potatoes in dill
33:38In dill
33:39Those are two things I've learnt on this trip
33:40And you have to let them rest
33:42The potatoes, don't you?
33:43Yeah
33:44So, yeah
33:46Who wants a kiss?
33:47It's just after 6.30
33:53We leave at 8
33:54Go up to Calais
33:56Get back to Charlie's house
33:57And meet everybody
33:59Mary will be waiting for me
34:01I can't wait to see her
34:03Can't wait to be
34:05In her arms
34:06And then tomorrow
34:08Ride back home to Scotland
34:10Where we all started from
34:11But this is it
34:14This is the last day
34:19Oh, no
34:20I can't get my zip to go up
34:21Isn't that funny?
34:22Last day
34:23Oh, oh, oh
34:31I wonder what that was
34:32Haha
34:49How do I look?
34:50With my white manguards?
34:52Wow
34:53I didn't realise it was white
34:54I didn't know they were white
34:55I just thought they were rust
34:57Yeah
34:58That's so funny
34:59I still can't quite believe
35:02It's the last day
35:10There she is, there's the sea
35:11Oh my gosh
35:12That's the white cliffs of Dover
35:13Is it?
35:14Yeah
35:15Is it?
35:16Yes
35:17It's so close
35:18My heart started going
35:24I feel it inside
35:28It's flowing
35:33I'm finding it really difficult
35:34To remember everything that we've done
35:36On this trip
35:37I mean, it's
35:38It's quite extraordinary
35:39We've really packed it in
35:41We've been carried around this huge journey
35:43On 50-year-old bikes
35:44It's quite a long way
35:46I've never been in most of the countries we went through before
35:51I don't think I've ever been to Denmark
35:53I don't think I've ever been to Denmark
35:54I don't think I've ever been to Denmark
35:55You see the landscape change around you
35:58Here we go
36:00Here we go
36:01I know the world
36:02We're all human
36:05We're all human
36:07But we're
36:08Keep a ball of kindness
36:11So they call us humankind
36:15That's a nice world of smoke
36:18We experience the elements
36:21Whoa
36:24Whoa
36:26Being attacked by mosquitoes in forests
36:28And pissing rain
36:29They want my blood
36:30Oh dear
36:31My favourite night was camping on that island
36:34And they left us there
36:36and they left us there we just sort of fell into a lot of stories and you end up meeting extraordinary
36:44people and there's something about that that feeds your soul
36:53go that's the technical term you have to be open to the journey you have to be open to your bike
36:59breaking down and being stuck at the side of the road are you able to be my knight in shining armor
37:05that was the spirit of the trip that was the whole point go on old bikes that would slow us down a bit
37:10so we would see more stuff have more of a laugh and that's exactly what happened amazing
37:24oh man the idea of riding the bike to your house so exciting it is cool all the trips we've done
37:31we've always finished somewhere else yeah and then now we're you know back into the channel
37:37tunnel back to back to britain long way home here we go
37:54fantastic almost fell over there that would have been embarrassing
37:57yeah i saw that charlie and you in the other day you had fell flat on his face
38:02fell out of those arms yeah a standing still in a train yeah welcome to igloo we hope you had a
38:07pleasant trip right now on british soil there we go hold on we have to drive on the left oh my god the
38:16left the left we're on the home straight to charlie's house in surrey it won't be the end of the journey

39:47yeah being on the road with charlie is something that i share with him and no one else you know
39:52he's in my mirror or i'm in his it's so familiar we've done so many thousands of miles like that you
39:58know i think as you get older you're much more precious with the people that you spend time
40:03with and ewan is one of those people there is something about being like a boy again on our bikes
40:07as kids you know and meet up with mates in the street and just knock about it's a bit like doing
40:12that as a grown-up i wasn't really going anywhere until we did the long way around and i remember
