00:00To obey my command to fix yourself at all times.
00:03Keep your punches up.
00:04Boys, your trunks are good.
00:06Touch your gloves.
00:07Touch your gloves.
00:08Let's get after it.
00:08Gerald Ritter, third man inside the ropes.
00:10Our referee tonight, 10 rounds at 140 pounds to try to claim greatness.
00:16Here we go, 10 rounds to start our night of top-ranked boxing on ESPN.
00:22I tell you, it's a very small ring tonight.
00:2520 by 20, 18 inside.
00:26I don't think these guys don't, I don't think it matters tonight.
00:31It caused the Saucedo camp a great deal of consternation last night.
00:36What were they saying to you, Mark?
00:38They were upset.
00:39They wanted a new ring.
00:40They're bringing a ring from Dallas.
00:43And they were, you know, this went on through the night.
00:45They didn't get the ring they wanted.
00:46It wasn't quite as small as they had been told.
00:50They thought they were going into a 16-foot ring.
00:52They went into an 18-foot ring.
00:54But if Saucedo keep jabbing like this, you're right, Tim.
01:00It will be immaterial.
01:01Yeah, but you saw Saucedo right there get clipped with an overhand right by Lenny.
01:05Lenny's an aggressive counter puncher.
01:07He has some quick hands.
01:08And he set him up with the overhand right.
01:11Again, Lenny's he 5'7", Saucedo 5'10".
01:14Had to drive home that right hand once he got to the inside there.
01:21Saucedo has all the athletic advantages here.
01:27Age, size, reach, height.
01:30He's a better athlete.
01:31And when we spoke to his trainer, Abel Sanchez, yesterday, he says,
01:36Yeah, but I want to toughen him up.
01:38And he cited, Tim, your fight against Ruslan Provodnikov, which is a brutal affair.
01:44And I have to say that as a fan, I love to fight.
01:47If I'm a trainer, that's the last thing I want a guy who's just 24 years old to fight like.
01:52Well, I have to say that the trainer wants his fighter to be fan-friendly.
01:58And I would say I want my fighter to be defensively sound and technical,
02:02especially if you have the size like he has now and using that jab from the outside
02:05and setting up the beautiful knockout because he has power in both hands.
02:10You could be fan-friendly and not look like Lenny Z.
02:14I didn't look like that.
02:15I don't look like Lenny Z, man.
02:16I look pretty good, right?
02:17You look great.
02:18The short right hand that went in at the end of that exchange for Alex.
02:25Tried to clip him with a left hook counterpunch as Lenny Z came forward there.
02:30Yes, he did.
02:31Salcedo likes to stay in the mid-distance range.
02:33Sometimes he lets his combinations go, then he comes right back to the middle,
02:37and he stays there.
02:38But he turned fire.
02:42Good exchange.
02:43Active first round for both men.
02:44See both guys not really using the ring at all.
02:50They're standing right in front of each other exchanging punches,
02:53looking for counterpunches.
02:54Opportunity.
02:55They could do the same thing in a 20-foot ring, a 16-foot ring, whatever.
02:58They're barely leaving the logo.
03:03Coming to the end of round number one of what should be a great night of top-ranked boxing
03:12on ESPN, capped by the world title fight with Zerto Ramirez.
03:15We got the two-division champ, Tim Bradley, as always, in between Mark and me.
03:21A couple of years ago, I asked Zappavini's manager, Mike Altamira,
03:25when does he typically start bleeding?
03:30He says, oh, when he's shadowboxing.
03:32Right.
03:33Yeah.
03:33In camp about three weeks ago.
03:36As soon as the contract is signed.
03:37But hopefully that will not be the case for Lenny Zee,
03:39who, as is often the case, puts forth a spirited effort.
03:43Yeah, Lenny Zee showing his hand speed right there.
03:46Making adjustments, going down to the body and the head of Salcedo.
03:53Good shot.
03:54That backs up Lenny Zee.
03:57Take power, both hands.
03:59That right hand clipped Lenny Zee as he stood back.
04:02Looked at him, mired his work.
04:03Got clipped with the right hand behind his guard.
04:07I believe it's a left hand.
04:08He's been sitting on that counter.
04:10Left hook as well.
04:12Come forward, right hand to the mid-body.
04:16By Lenny Zee.
04:19Really good timing by the young kid, Salcedo.
04:22I would love to see him get his jab working.
04:24He'd better control a little bit more.
04:26Double up the left hand with an uppercut in the mix.
04:29Something that, Tim, that we saw last time.
04:32Salcedo fought a very pleasing fight at StubHub.
04:38But did not go to the body at all.
04:40No.
04:41I mean, oh, nice uppercut in the middle there.
04:43Right hand by Salcedo.
04:44He sees those big targets above the eye, the scar tissue above Lenny Zee's eye.
04:50I noticed he saw that when they squared up and they posed for the photographers the other day.
04:58But it might be worth his while to go a little bit to the body.
05:00Yeah, absolutely.
05:02I said in the beginning that he goes well to the body.
05:05Watch a film on him.
05:06He did at times.
05:07But now I don't really see too many body shots yet.
05:11There's a right hand from Lenny Zee.
05:13And Salcedo tried to roll with it.
05:15Both men have landed significant punches here in this second round.
05:20Double up the jab.
05:21Just missed with the right hand.
05:22Nice work with the left hand.
05:23Look at this.
05:25That's a beautiful combination right there.
05:27Doubling up, tripling up with the same hand.
05:29Including an uppercut.
05:30But you see how he stands there for return fire.
05:33He does get hit.
05:34He's available for shots.
05:37That's how Salcedo is.
05:39Lenny Zee's having a good time.
05:41Letting him work and getting off his punches as well.
05:44I think fans are having a good time watching these first two rounds.
05:47This is a very good pace that is being set between these two.
05:50Body shot with the right hand from Lenny Zee.
05:53Offense! Offense! Offense! Offense!
05:57There's the blood.
06:00There is the blood.
06:01There it is.
06:02The right eye has opened up on Lenny Zee.
06:06Always a concern with him.
06:07There's a left hook that landed as well as a right hand that came across.
06:13As Salcedo finds success here in round number two.
06:16And you can see Lenny Zee already affected by that right eye.
06:20We're going to take a short break and come right back to OKC.
06:25Salcedo, look at this uppercut.
06:27Perfectly timed after a jab was thrown by Lenny Zee.
06:30Up the middle.
06:32Textbook uppercut.
06:34Every time your hands leave your face, there's the opening up the middle.
06:37And he found home for that uppercut.
06:39And it was a little later in that second round that a combination did open up a cut on the right eye of Lenny Zee.
06:46And we have confirmation from the commission here ringside that that was caused by a punch.
06:51CompuBox numbers in the last round.
06:5344% landed by Salcedo.
06:5636 of 82.
06:58Good pace by both.
06:59163 combined punches thrown in that second round.
07:03No one has really taken over this fight yet.
07:05It's a back and forth action packed fight.
07:08Both guys are having their chances and having their opportunities in the ring.
07:14Hard rounds of score in my opinion.
07:15I see Salcedo with a decided advantage.
07:19And I also think that cut's bothering Lenny.
07:22You can see the way he's blinking.
07:24He's fighting with a great deal of desperation.
07:25He understands the stakes.
07:27He's been in this game for 12 years.
07:29He's 30 years old.
07:30Oh, good exchange!
07:32And Lenny Zee goes down!
07:34Let's see if Alex Salcedo can close the show in round three.
07:48They are on their feet here at the Thunderdome.
07:52Here he comes, charging in.
07:54A right, a left, looking for the headshot.
07:57Probing with the jab.
07:58Now he goes to the body with a left hand.
08:00Over the top with a right.
08:01And here comes Lenny Zee, valiantly fighting back.
08:06Left hook of his own.
08:08Trying to stand right in the pocket.
08:12You want to get your guy hurt?
08:14One thing I'm not seeing from Salcedo,
08:17he needs to go down to the body to drop those hands of Lenny Zee.
08:21Look at Lenny Zee stand right in there.
08:23Cut eye, knocked down, and fighting back.
08:27Sharp right hand, right behind the jab from Salcedo.
08:31Lenny Zee, Lenny Zee showing his heart,
08:36showing his experience.
08:38He's hanging in this fight right now.
08:40Right hand to the body,
08:41was partially hit by the elbow.
08:43You're seeing a guy who was 24 earlier this week fight at a very high, mature level.
09:01Not rushing in front of the home crowd.
09:03No, he's not rushing, and he's throwing perfectly timed uppercuts with the left and right hand.
09:13Look at that shot.
09:13He just got hit by a right hand, but he comes back with a right hand of his own and splits the guard.
09:18I'm telling you, this young man has Eric Morales written all over.
09:21I have no problem with that.
09:23For years to come, I have no problem with that.
09:26Short right hand from Lenny Zee, comes right back to close out a round in which he was knocked down.
09:30Oh, that's good stuff.
09:33Mark it down, round number three here at OKC.
09:38Why are you letting this man work?
09:42There's no reason for him to work like that.
09:44He's giving you that stomach.
09:49Hey, Lenny.
09:50Tim Bradley, take us through it.
09:52See, right now, we're looking at a cut right now.
09:55It's a knockdown right here.
10:03Let me see what punch lands here.
10:05Oh, a beautiful time.
10:06As Lenny Zee was throwing his round right hand, guess what?
10:09The young man, Salcedo, throws his own in between.
10:13The shot, right hook, and down goes Lenny Zee.
10:17Check it out again.
10:18Boom.
10:19Perfectly timed.
10:19That's double impact.
10:21As you're throwing a punch and you get hit with an existing punch, that's double impact.
10:25Some of the best, most spectacular knockdowns we see.
10:29You can ascribe to that.
10:31That's a hard shot.
10:31Opening up, throwing a punch, and taking one before you can deliver one.
10:35What a great third round.
10:38But he gets up, and he's fighting.
10:40He's still fighting strong, in my opinion.
10:41So, still trying to win.
10:45Remember, so much is on the line here at 140 pounds.
10:48Salcedo has been destined for greatness for so long.
10:53The hype has been building.
10:55A win tonight, and possibly lined up to fight undefeated Maurice Hooker,
11:01who just won the belt from Terry Flanagan.
11:03Both of these guys made their reputations within the boxing business at the Wild Card.
11:09Years ago, Lenny Z came from Australia.
11:13Freddie Roach put him in with Miguel Cotto, and he impressed.
11:17Oh!
11:18Savage shot!
11:20Salcedo!
11:22Attacking that head, left and right, as Lenny Z comes back.
11:29Look at the experience now coming in.
11:31You want to talk about experience and guts from hurt and battered to now a left hook
11:37that has the undefeated hometown kid hurting badly and backed up.
11:42He better hold.
11:44Lenny Z, go up for it.
11:44Look at this action from Lenny Z.
11:47Going for broke here in round number four.
11:50A big right hand.
11:52Alex Salcedo stood up to it somehow.
11:54Finally ties up for a moment, but quickly a break.
12:03Can you believe this fight?
12:06And a cut on Salcedo's right eye as he takes and takes and tries to get more.
12:14I asked Lenny Z yesterday, what happens if he loses?
12:17There is no losing, he said.
12:19Absolutely not.
12:20He knows this is his last shot.
12:22This is basically the Maurice Hooker's title.
12:25This is his last shot to get there.
12:27Squared up, throwing punch after punch after punch.
12:32He's going for it.
12:34Blood streaming down the face of Salcedo as well as he lands an uppercut.
12:39We've talked about Lenny Z's cuts.
12:52Salcedo is cut in his last two fights, and this is a gruesome one above his right eye.
12:58There you go.
12:59Salcedo loves a fight at mid-distance range.
13:01He don't like to use his height.
13:02Guess what?
13:03Lenny Z knows that, and he stays there after every combination, doesn't move his head.
13:07And Lenny Z, an aggressive counter-puncher.
13:10So Sal landed a right hand that opened up the cut even worse on Lenny Z, and Lenny Z stands up and just fires back.
13:18This is outrageous.
13:20Let's see how they finish it up.
13:22Let him take it home, boys.
13:24You can take your list of round of the year and put it in Big Marker right now.
13:44Here's how it all started.
13:49Here you see Salcedo jabbing right there.
13:51A little bit too close.
13:53Tried to throw a hook from the middle and got clipped with the right hand.
13:56There it is.
13:57Overhand right.
13:58Jabbing or throwing a punch from the middle.
14:00Whether it's a hook or a jab.
14:03Lenny Z stepping right in with the overhand right.
14:05He changed levels right there.
14:06Look at how clean their faces were at that moment of the fourth round.
14:15And then they were just drenched with blood for the final two minutes.
14:21And now they're going to dance that dance again.
14:24Salcedo and Lenny Z trying to earn a title shot.
14:29The undefeated 24-year-old in front of his hometown fans here in Oklahoma City
14:34stood up to everything Lenny Zapovina had in that last round.
14:43Right now, if I'm in Lenny Z's corner right now,
14:46I'm telling him to attack this young man, bag him up,
14:50throw your combinations, block, and come right back
14:53because he's there to be hit.
14:55To just see what we put up graphically there,
14:57that arc of this fight for Lenny Z.
14:59To know that he was cut badly, that he was knocked down,
15:02and then comes back and lands 42 power punches to get after Salcedo.
15:08Now what will this bring?
15:10Bernardo was in Salcedo's corner.
15:12Bernie, what can you tell us?
15:13Now, Abel Sanchez says, look,
15:15the first thing that Alex has to do is establish a jab.
15:19He can't just wait for him to throw.
15:21He can't be perfect with his punches.
15:22He's got to go and be first,
15:25and that's what he's trying to do here in round five.
15:27The right hand has made a home for Lenny Z on Salcedo,
15:33and he's looking to set him up.
15:35You see that jab to the belly?
15:37He's looking to set him up for that big overhand right
15:39that he landed a round ago.
15:40That's what Lenny's corner told us,
15:46that as good as that jab is,
15:48he gets lazy bringing it back,
15:50and he can be captured.
15:51Also, you see him lean in there.
15:53He leans in, and he's susceptible to an uppercut.
15:56Right now, Salcedo's controlling the distance with that jab.
15:59That jab is working wonders for him right now,
16:02but he cannot make a mistake.
16:04I'm jabbing too close.
16:05Keep it outside.
16:07Salcedo is learning something about himself
16:09that very few people ever learn.
16:13He's being tested in a way that
16:15you don't usually get tested.
16:17in front of the home crowd
16:19with a cut like that
16:21against a very, very determined fighter
16:24who knows this is his last chance.
16:26Yeah.
16:27These are the moments
16:28when you watch boxing
16:29where you realize everything else is just a game.
16:33You don't play boxing, folks.
16:34No, you don't.
16:35All the other sports and metaphors
16:36for what this actually is,
16:38stripped-down combat.
16:40You see Salcedo changing the speed up on his punches,
16:43taking a little bit of leather off of him,
16:44throwing combinations to keep Lenny Z at bay.
16:47And he's trying to throw that full extension
16:49with his punches now.
16:51You see the effect that's happening right now
16:53on Lenny Z.
16:54Lenny Z swiping at his eyes.
16:56That cut has worsened.
16:59There's a right hand behind the jab
17:00as Lenny Z tries to fight off the ropes for a moment.
17:02Oh, big right hand comes in,
17:04splitting the guard and getting the attention
17:06of everybody here at the Thunderdome.
17:09He needs to watch the counter punches from Lenny Z.
17:11Here he comes.
17:14That's that overhand right.
17:15Swinging for the fences again is Zapovinia.
17:20And he comes back with a big right hand.
17:24It just won't stop here.
17:28Don't go anywhere.
17:31Back here in Oklahoma City,
17:32the crowd has been standing
17:34for the better part of the last four rounds
17:36with good reason.
17:37Tim Bradley take us through some of the action
17:38of the last round between Salcedo and Lenny Z.
17:40Look at this right hand lens for Salcedo.
17:43Right behind the jab.
17:45Full extension on the right hand.
17:46He's taking a little bit of mustard off the punch
17:48in what I see right now.
17:50But it was a full extension right hand right there.
17:52He's using this height,
17:53and that's what he needs to do against Lenny Z.
17:55Don't stand there and exchange with this guy.
17:57Use your height and fight from a distance.
18:00Look at the amount of blood splatter
18:02in the middle of the ring.
18:08Lenny Z said he wanted to take Salcedo
18:12into the later rounds
18:13and into deep blood or he called it
18:15to drown him.
18:16Drown him.
18:16I can't see this thing going on
18:19to the later rounds.
18:19It's going to be a battle of attrition.
18:22Someone's going to hemorrhage.
18:24It's incredible.
18:25It's an incredible, incredible fight.
18:28And the guts of the two guys, amazing.
18:33Bernardo, what can you offer?
18:35Well, that is Zappo Vigne's corner.
18:37Ernie Zavala's not really concerned about the blood.
18:39He's concerned about the cut underneath the right eye
18:42and the swelling that's being caused there.
18:43And in terms of what's going on boxing-wise,
18:46he says Lenny Z's got to get off first,
18:48set up the body shots,
18:49and then land that overhand right,
18:51but be first.
18:53Well, there was a good right hand
18:54that got around him.
18:56I sure did.
18:57Came around that guard of Lenny Z's right there.
19:00Now the young man is attacking,
19:01but you see he's not smothering himself.
19:04He's trying to keep the fight outside
19:05so he can have this opportunity,
19:06and Lenny Z got to step in
19:07and take Mo Levin.
19:11Good job by Salcedo,
19:12keeping it up at range,
19:14using that height.
19:16And straight back,
19:18and Salcedo followed him with punches.
19:20Huge amount of swelling now
19:22under the left eye of Lenny Z.
19:24Blood streaming down the right side of his face,
19:27and a big mouse under the left eye.
19:29Double jab right hand,
19:30Lenny Z looked to counter.
19:33Lenny Z trying to counter in between.
19:36Salcedo stepping back with his hands down.
19:38If I was Lenny Z,
19:40I would take two steps in
19:41and come behind with the overhand right
19:43or left hook.
19:44It's open.
19:46And somehow this is just the appetizer
19:49to a world title fight still to come.
19:52Think about that.
19:53Sit back, enjoy your Saturday night.
19:56It's getting good.
19:57There's a body shot with the left hand
20:00and a right hand from Lenny Z.
20:01And did you see the legs?
20:02Lenny Z just can't see.
20:04He's pawing at his eyes.
20:06He's having obvious difficulty with his vision.
20:10He's used to fighting like this.
20:12Look at his face,
20:13painted with blood,
20:14and yet fighting back.
20:17Salcedo's learning two things,
20:19this round in particular.
20:20One, you use your jab,
20:22you control the distance.
20:24Two, the greatest virtue you can have in this game
20:26is the ability to remain undiscouraged.
20:29End of six coming up.
20:36Trying to earn a title shot
20:37is the undefeated local guy,
20:40Alex Salcedo,
20:41from right here in Oklahoma City.
20:43But the veteran Lenny Z
20:45will not go away.
20:52Lenny Z trying to use that jab now to come in.
20:54And now he's going down to the body,
20:56trying to take some of the tires out of the...
20:58take some of the air out of the tires of...
21:01Salcedo, excuse me.
21:05Let's check in with Bernardo.
21:07Abel Sanchez wants Salcedo to use the jab,
21:10blind Lenny Z,
21:11and move to his right
21:12because he cannot see
21:13that overhand right coming from the left eye.
21:15There's no doubt about it with the left eye, Bernardo.
21:18That is huge amount of swelling
21:20around the left eye.
21:21The blood is coming from the right eye,
21:23but the left eye is completely closed.
21:24What do you tell your guy,
21:29your fighter,
21:30Lenny Z,
21:31bloodied up?
21:32He has to go for broke right now
21:33because guess what?
21:34The ref is the possibility
21:35he may stop the fight the next round.
21:37I think that Ernie Zavala
21:39told him the right thing.
21:40He has to go for it.
21:41Let your hands go
21:44because he'll give you one more round.
21:45You can't trust Lenny Z to protect himself.
21:50This falls to his corner,
21:51Ernie Zavala and Pepe Reilly.
21:54This reminds me of a fight.
21:56Eric Morales,
21:57Pablo Cesar.
21:58This reminds me of a horror movie here.
22:00Check it out.
22:00It's like a splatter movie.
22:01Look at this.
22:02Come on.
22:02And this may or may not be
22:06fight of the year,
22:07but unless Alex Saucedo
22:08gets terribly overconfident,
22:10this is an extraordinary
22:12coming of age for him.
22:15It is hard to believe
22:16that this could go
22:17any further after this round
22:18when you look at the face
22:20of Lenny Z.
22:20There's a right hand.
22:22Saucedo,
22:22see what he's got here
22:23as he's got him pinned
22:25in that corner.
22:26And Lenny Z,
22:26of course he does,
22:27fights out of position.
22:28Blood splatter on our camera.
22:29His work rate
22:34is still barely diminished.
22:35It's amazing.
22:37Unbelievable effort.
22:38Eye closed,
22:40other eye cut.
22:43You see him step back,
22:43got his distance
22:44because that shot hurt.
22:45Hit him right on the button.
22:46Another right hand comes in
22:48to Bernardo's point.
22:49Step to that side,
22:50throw the right hand.
22:51How could he possibly
22:52see it coming?
22:54If Lenny Z was a character
22:56in a Hollywood boxing movie,
22:57they would reject
22:58that face right now.
22:59say it's unrealistic.
23:01But yet it's happening
23:02right in front of us
23:02live on national TV
23:03and he's fighting
23:04harder and harder.
23:05Another right hand
23:06from Saucedo.
23:07This is it.
23:08They are shutting
23:09this thing down
23:10up on the apron.
23:11The ref doesn't see it yet
23:12as he takes for punishment.
23:15The corner stops it.
23:16Valiant effort
23:17but OKC's Thunderdome
23:20is rocking.
23:21Alex Saucedo returns home
23:34and puts on a magnificent show.
23:37And he was really
23:42the guy that Alex went to
23:44for years
23:45for everything
23:46for his confidence
23:47for his inspiration
23:48for guidance.
23:50He suffered a stroke
23:51about a year ago
23:52and it's been a great blow
23:55to Saucedo.
23:56What a finish.
24:04Here you are.
24:04You see
24:04Saucedo moving in.
24:07Right now he's having his way.
24:08He's landing shots.
24:09He's winning every exchange
24:10and the transition phase.
24:12The transition phase
24:13is when they come together
24:14and they come apart
24:15and they come back together.
24:17He's going to stop the fight.
24:22I commend his corner.
24:23I mean I...
24:24I was having his...
24:25His work rate
24:27wasn't diminished.
24:30We saw how he kept
24:31fighting back.
24:32We saw a couple of rounds
24:33where he had a chance.
24:34He did the right thing.
24:36Absolutely.
24:36The homecoming
24:37back here in Oklahoma City
24:39AKA Loud City.
24:42It's about to roar more
24:44as a title shot
24:45was just earned
24:46and to make it official.
24:47Here's Michael Buffer.
24:50Ladies and gentlemen
24:51before we go

25:04The end comes
25:05at 2 minutes 31 seconds.
25:08Round number 7

25:54to say Lenny

25:59off the canvas
25:59you had him hurt

26:02what this fight
26:03was like.
26:04Yeah he was a tough
26:06opponent
26:06like he definitely
26:07took a great hit
26:07I hurt him
26:08and I tried to open up
26:09got caught a little bit
26:10I'll just see my cuts
26:11just starting with
26:12boxing I can't help
26:13you know
26:13I cut really bad
26:14and it's just starting
26:15to bother me
26:15you know what I mean

26:26but if you don't do anything
26:27I'm going to stop it
26:28what did you think
26:28about your corner
26:29taking care of yourself?
26:30You know
26:31I know I've got
26:32good people at heart
26:33in the corner
26:34that are there
26:34to look after me
