Transcript
00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of Look Around London. The River Thames is the lifeblood
00:06of London and one of the UK's most iconic waterways. Stretching 215 miles, it's the longest river
00:13entity in England, flowing from the Cotswolds through Oxford, Reading and Windsor before
00:18reaching London and emptying into the North Sea. Historically, the Thames powered trade,
00:25supported industry and shaped the growth of London for over 2,000 years. Today,
00:31it is still a vital transport and tourism route and home to diverse wildlife including seals and
00:37even the occasional porpoise. But it faces modern challenges, pollution, rising sea levels and the
00:44threat of flooding. The Thames barrier, completed in 1982, plays a critical role in protecting London
00:51from tidal surges.
