00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of Look Around London.
00:04Nelson's Column is one of London's most iconic landmarks, located in Trafalgar Square.
00:10It was built in the 1840s to honour Admiral Horatio Nelson, a British naval hero who died
00:16in 1805 at the Battle of Trafalgar.
00:20The column stands about 52 metres tall and includes the statue of Nelson at the top which
00:25overlooks the square below.
00:27He's depicted facing south, symbolising his naval leadership.
00:32Four giant bronze lions guard the base, added later in 1867, and bronze panels on the pedestal
00:39depict scenes from Nelson's major battles.
00:42Nelson's Column is not just a tribute to military victory, it's a symbol of British
00:48resilience, leadership and national pride and history.
