00:00Look at this.
00:01I mean, this is like a dream come true for me.
00:03Jay and Brittany are moving from the East Coast to Idaho
00:07so they can raise their kids closer to family.
00:09It's right across the street from my sister.
00:11Yeah, that's too close for my comfort.
00:12Jay was born in India and associates
00:15a large two-story house with success.
00:17Got us a two-story.
00:18Yeah, that's what he wanted, right?
00:20Two-story.
00:21Yeah, awesome.
00:23But while he's focused on luxury.
00:25I love to go to the driveway.
00:27And I don't even know about this shiplap.
00:29It's like, you know, pretend shiplap.
00:32Look at it.
00:32It's not even, like, level.
00:33I think it's fine.
00:34She's holding the line on what they actually need
00:36as opposed to want.
00:38I think it's a little too small.
00:39Six bedrooms, 2,800 square feet.
00:41I mean, I know you think this is small, but it's not.
00:59Hey.
01:00Hey there.
01:00Kids are with the parents.
01:01Kid-free afternoon.
01:03I am a former school psychologist,
01:05but currently a stay-at-home mom.
01:07I co-own a restaurant in Virginia Beach.
01:09So we've been living in Virginia Beach
01:11for about four years.
01:12He's been working with family for a while.
01:13We were talking about him starting his own restaurant.
01:17So we decided to look here in Idaho,
01:19because now it's time to go to my family.
01:22And we're here for a few weeks trying to look at different houses.
01:25So, Jay, how's it for you staying with my parents?
01:27Sorry.
01:28Well, for short term, I think it's fine.
01:30Oh, goodness.
01:30You know, your parents did live with us for three years.
01:34I don't want to hear any complaining out of you.
01:36So in the Indian culture, it's very typical
01:38for the parents who live with their children.
01:39His parents have a place in India,
01:41but they stay with us for four or five,
01:43up to six months a year.
01:44And they have to have a bedroom and a bathroom
01:46on a floor, a main floor with no stairs,
01:48because they're getting older.
01:50They're older, and so, yeah.
01:51I want a big, big grand house,
01:54modern craftsmen, two stories.
01:56Anything that's, that is more high-end is something that he'll go for.
02:01I think owning a big house is definitely a part of American dream.
02:04I was about eight years old when we came here,
02:06and I grew up watching American sitcom.
02:09The Fresh Prince of the Bel-Air was my dream house.
02:12Before we got married, I had a big house,
02:14like a $3,000 square foot.
02:16It was definitely flashy.
02:17Not quite my idea of family living.
02:20Too much to clean.
02:22The energy bills were too high.
02:23We bought something a little bit more manageable.
02:26I grew up in a culture where your status is judged from your house.
02:29We just grew up very differently, though.
02:31If you can't afford to pay your bills or whatever,
02:33you can't go out and have fun, you can't go travel,
02:35then what's the point?
02:35You know, how big is big?
02:37Five, six bedrooms.
02:38No, that's just too big.
02:40I say we go with the traditional ranch one story.
02:43I think four bedrooms is plenty.
02:45When your family comes, we can have air mattresses,
02:47they have couches, we can have cots.
02:49Growing up in India, where we had a big farmhouse,
02:52probably like 14 or something bedrooms.
02:54Open kitchen to the courtyard where people just sit and eat and hang out.
02:59I want my kids to have that lifestyle that I experienced.
03:03He wants us to live in a hotel and an entertainment space for the one or two times a year that we might
03:07actually entertain or have to have guest stay.
03:10For me, I like the defined spaces in a house.
03:13I don't want to walk in and you look at my kitchen and my sink full of dirty dishes.
03:17Oh, that's right, that's true.
03:19I know, Jay, you love wood floors, like I get it,
03:22but with young kids, I'd rather have LVPs, something a lot easier to maintain.
03:26I'm thinking we should get like four to five acres of land.
03:29Four to five acres?
03:30And who's going to be taking care of four to five acres?
03:32I was going to say, what are you going to do?
03:33Are you going to get a goat?
03:34I'm going to take care.
03:34I know, I can take care of it.
03:36You think so?
03:36Yeah.
03:37How about we start with one?
03:38I grew up on a farm.
03:40With some garden boxes.
03:42Price-wise, what are you guys looking at?
03:43$5.50.
03:45I just can't imagine spending more than $4.50.
03:48We can't really get much for $4.50.
03:51I don't need the big flashy house.
03:52But, you know, I can't do too small.
03:57Got a house, so I'm going to bling.
04:03GPS says like five minutes, so.
04:05I like this neighborhood.
04:06It's pretty nice.
04:07I know you want land,
04:08but you don't get land in a neighborhood.
04:11In a neighborhood, yes.
04:12Two-story.
04:13It's a two-story.
04:14I would see.
04:15Look how grand it looks just from the outside of it.
04:18All I see is all the bills we have to pay
04:21to heat and cool that thing.
04:25Nice landscaping.
04:25I like the little stone texture on the walls.
04:28You know, it's not exactly my aesthetic, but it looks okay.
04:34Hey, guys.
04:35Hey, how are you?
04:35How are you?
04:36How are you?
04:36How are you?
04:37You got us a two-story, right?
04:38Yeah, that's what he wanted, right?
04:39Wow, that's a two-story.
04:40Yeah, awesome.
04:43They're so diverse in their thinking.
04:45Jay, obviously, is looking for the mega mansion.
04:48Yeah.
04:49Brittany is looking for affordability,
04:52not looking for anything over the top.
04:53That's a huge gap.
04:54We're going to have our work cut out for us,
04:56because we're going to show Jay things he's going to love.
04:57We're going to show Brittany things she's going to love,
04:59and they're going to have to come to the center.
05:01I want you to be a little creative in your thinking here.
05:03This may need to be potentially a bedroom
05:06to make it work for your folks.
05:07We've got to do something on the main level because of the stairs.
05:09Okay, so this is the option.
05:11Yeah, the stairs.
05:12I mean, it's decent size.
05:14Your mom can peek out like she loves to do.
05:18These floors are LVP?
05:19Yeah, LVP.
05:19Oh, I love that.
05:20And this is 2,534 square feet.
05:23So small.
05:24Okay, look that big.
05:252,500 square feet is not small.
05:28That size sounds great to me.
05:30This is the half bath on the main level.
05:32Okay.
05:32So this is the only bathroom on the main.
05:34It's really a non-negotiable to have a third bath,
05:36so we'd have to add something.
05:38You're going to have to go into the garage to make this work
05:41or push that direction.
05:44Like how open this is.
05:45Yeah, see, that's exactly what I didn't want.
05:48A ton of space to entertain.
05:49Like, yeah, I think it's amazing to have all the kids
05:52going around.
05:53From the entrance, it's kind of like kitchen's kind of hidden,
05:56you know, all the stuff is over here.
05:57That is true.
05:58You can't see my sink of dishes from the front door.
06:00Oh, this countertop reminds me of my first house.
06:03Yeah, I think it looks the same.
06:05It looks the same, you know.
06:06It hides everything.
06:07Yeah, it would for sure.
06:08Especially with turmeric stains and all that stuff.
06:10Yeah.
06:10Yeah.
06:11I don't love the white.
06:13I just see fingerprints everywhere.
06:15It's just not my favorite.
06:16We'll just clean it more often than usual.
06:18Oh, I see.
06:20You're just going to add to my plate.
06:21OK.
06:22Nice sliding door to the patio.
06:24Yeah, the outdoor living is great.
06:25Fully fenced.
06:26Oh, I kind of like this.
06:28It's not too big.
06:30It's too small.
06:30Pretty manageable.
06:31It's too small.
06:31Well, of course you would say that.
06:32Not too big.
06:33Too small.
06:34Oh, you guys are hilarious.
06:34It's way too small.
06:36And I know that you wanted more acreage.
06:37This is, you know, 0.22 of an acre, is what you've got here.
06:40See?
06:410.22.
06:42That's decent.
06:43That's too small.
06:45Perfect for me.
06:45Yeah.
06:46All right.
06:48I like this carpet, actually.
06:50Yeah, that's why it's safe for the kids.
06:52This is the primary.
06:53Oh.
06:53This is the primary room.
06:54OK.
06:54Nice big space.
06:56I love LVP, but not in the bedrooms.
06:59When you step out of bed, I just, you know, don't like cold floors.
07:02Yeah, you prefer that, yeah.
07:03Oh, see, now these cabinets.
07:07I love this wood look.
07:08I wish that they had this in the kitchen.
07:09I just wanted a double sink.
07:10True.
07:11I just see all your beard hair in here.
07:13I'd love this bathtub right here.
07:15I know you would.
07:16To me, it's just a waste of space.
07:17I wish the shower was bigger, but.
07:18Why?
07:19You can soak in here, you know?
07:20After all good workouts, just.
07:22Yeah, OK.
07:23Enjoy my bath time.
07:24You do that.
07:25Bathroom is doable, but I would definitely
07:27put a double sink in though.
07:28Yeah.
07:31This is an interesting room.
07:32So another bedroom?
07:33It doesn't have a closet, so it can't be officially
07:36counted as a bedroom.
07:36It's a good space.
07:38It would be nice as a bedroom.
07:39All the bedrooms are here.
07:41OK.
07:41It is decent size, and at least the rooms are right next
07:44to each other for the kids.
07:46So that flex space next to the primary would technically be
07:51like a fifth room up here.
07:52If you put a closet in there, it would be a fifth bedroom.
07:54Fifth bedroom.
07:55I know, that makes you happy.
07:56So yeah, I like the sound of that.
07:59Here's your full bath.
08:00OK.
08:01Again, single sink.
08:02I always had to share with my sisters,
08:03so it would be nice to have a double your right.
08:07So you guys are like, I mean, I'm, I want to do my best
08:09for you and everything, right?
08:11But you know, I want big.
08:12I want small.
08:12I want tall.
08:13I want skinny.
08:14I want, where are we at?
08:15What do you think?
08:16How can I help you?
08:17I mean, I love the two-story look.
08:19The bedrooms are pretty decent size.
08:20Yeah.
08:21The kitchen is, look at it.
08:22It speaks for itself.
08:24Yeah.
08:24I mean, I hear you.
08:25We're just going to have to really put some thought
08:26into if the layout will work for our family.
08:29I mean, we'd have to spend some money
08:30to really make this work.
08:31The full bathroom is a must.
08:32Yeah.
08:33I want to like, you know, two, three acres.
08:35And maybe you could find something
08:36that has like a dedicated unit for the parents.
08:38I know that might be tough in this area.
08:43The next place doesn't have the land Jay wants,
08:45but it does come through on space.
08:47Six bedrooms.
08:48Oh.
08:49And three bathrooms.
08:58So is this your sister lives?
09:00Yeah.
09:00This the house?
09:01That might be too close.
09:02That's across the street pretty much.
09:04Ranch.
09:05Score one for me.
09:06Ranch.
09:07What about me?
09:13Hey.
09:14Hey, Ryan.
09:15Welcome.
09:15Come on in.
09:17Okay.
09:17Well, you kind of buried the lead.
09:19It's right across the street from my sister.
09:20That's too close for my comfort.
09:21Your parents lived in our house.
09:23That's true.
09:24When they come.
09:25480,000.
09:26Okay.
09:27Six bedrooms.
09:28Wow.
09:28And three bathrooms.
09:29And the floors are not bad for,
09:31I mean, I like the floors too.
09:32The color's good.
09:33This looks like real hardwood.
09:35I mean, I would really prefer LVP.
09:37It's pretty.
09:37I just, I really would like something easier to maintain.
09:40It's pretty hardy.
09:40And I don't really know about this shiplap.
09:43It's like, you know, pretend shiplap.
09:45Look at it.
09:46It's not even like level straight.
09:47You know, like it goes up and then bows down.
09:49You're the only one that would notice that.
09:51I think it's fine.
09:52Ryan, you know I like wood look cabinets.
09:56This was wood.
09:57They painted it.
09:57Oh, that's even worse.
09:58Oh.
09:59This was an alder cabinet.
10:00Oh, yeah.
10:02I like the island part, definitely.
10:03Yeah.
10:04I'm really disappointed in the white countertops, though.
10:07You remember when your mom cut all those carrots?
10:10Oh, yeah.
10:11That definitely got a...
10:12It immediately stained orange.
10:13A stain, yeah.
10:14That stain is definitely something we're going to think about as well.
10:17It took a lot of elder grease to get that out.
10:17You know, it's too much of a separation.
10:19Like, if we put a table here, then there's no people going to stand.
10:24Summertime, you'd have that outdoor living.
10:26And this outdoor living here is really nice.
10:28Yeah, but summers here are pretty short.
10:30And it's true.
10:30Yeah, today's a prime example of that.
10:33We'll plan the one party a year in the summer, so you don't have to worry about that.
10:37Wow, I like the walk-in laundry room.
10:39Built-in storage.
10:40The wallpaper, I mean, you know.
10:42Not something I would pick, but I can live with it.
10:49This backyard is gorgeous.
10:50But it's definitely not what I want.
10:53You know, I really want some acres where I can, you know.
10:56Well, we have so much else going on.
10:58I think that, you know, having an easy-to-maintain yard would be good.
11:00They've got a really good established garden.
11:03Oh, I love that.
11:05I can just see our kids playing there.
11:06For sure.
11:07It's not as big as you want, but I think it's perfect for me.
11:09There are a lot of feelings surrounding a cross-country move.
11:13I know that it's going to be a good move for our family,
11:15but at the same time, there's a lot of anxiety and apprehension.
11:18Jay and I are on completely different pages on what we want,
11:21and so I'm a little bit nervous that we're going to be able to find something
11:24that will make us both happy.
11:26Three beds, two baths on the main.
11:28Okay.
11:29They are nice-sized rooms.
11:31Okay.
11:31It's decent.
11:32I mean, one of these rooms would have to be for your parents,
11:37because they can't go down the stairs.
11:41At least we have a main floor guest bath, so that's good.
11:44And so this is the...
11:47This is the primary.
11:48Primary.
11:48Primary.
11:48Okay.
11:50Everything in this house feels a little tight to me.
11:52Yeah.
11:53What if you guys ended up occupying the downstairs and let your folks stay up here?
11:57Hmm.
11:57I don't know about that.
11:58I mean, I want...
12:00Well, the primary bedroom's up here, so...
12:02Yeah.
12:02You know, the big closets and everything like that is up here, so...
12:05We'll see.
12:05I just...
12:05I can't imagine being in a house without being in the primary.
12:08The things you sacrifice for mom and dad, man.
12:10You got to do it.
12:10I guess we'll see.
12:11In one sink.
12:12I do love the wood look.
12:14Checking myself out, you know?
12:15You know that's his favorite pastime, is checking himself out.
12:18Yeah.
12:19The burdens that handsome men carry around, huh?
12:21Exactly, you know?
12:24All right, let me take you downstairs.
12:27Three bed.
12:28Okay.
12:28One bath.
12:29Huge living room.
12:30Okay.
12:31Carpet looks in decent shape.
12:33Big.
12:34Large.
12:34This is more what I'm used to for bedroom size.
12:36Large.
12:37A lot of space.
12:38Bathroom is a really great size.
12:39Okay.
12:40Well, this one you can do a double sink probably.
12:42Easily.
12:43This is really massive.
12:45The living room is huge.
12:46Yeah, this is great space.
12:47Yeah.
12:48This is where we spend most of our time.
12:49The day-to-day with the kids, I can picture it and they can get the toys here,
12:54they can make a mess here and we still have upstairs for all the entertaining that you want to do.
13:00I think it's still too small for us.
13:02But at six bedrooms, 2,800 square feet, I mean, I know you think this is small, but it's not.
13:06I love the ranch look and I like the defined spaces.
13:09That's good for me.
13:09And I like the manageable yard.
13:11I love that it already has the play set for our kids.
13:14It's not big as what I wanted because obviously I wanted like, you know, two, three acres.
13:18Right.
13:20And since getting land is so important to Jay, their agent finally delivers on that.
13:25I mean, this is like a dream come true for me.
13:29This place is like about 20 minutes away from my parents.
13:36Wow, really?
13:38Yeah.
13:39I don't know.
13:40I mean, I kind of like this area a little bit.
13:43Brings back a lot of good memories.
13:44Yeah.
13:45Is this what it was like in India?
13:46A lot of farm fields and just a lot of gravel roads.
13:50Looks like it's a ranch.
13:52I do like that.
13:53It's your favorite thing right here.
13:54Circular driveway.
13:56I love circular driveways.
14:01I mean, I do like the look of it and see Amaya climbing all the trees.
14:06Look at this view though.
14:07Look at the great view to the farmlands.
14:09Yeah, it is peaceful.
14:15Hey, Jay, Brittany.
14:16Come on in, guys.
14:17How are you?
14:18You like that ranch home?
14:19Yeah.
14:20We're a little bit out there, huh?
14:21Yeah.
14:21This is more country.
14:22I love the land.
14:23It's amazing.
14:24Look out.
14:24Big everything is.
14:25Carpet's fine.
14:26I mean, we'd probably want to change it.
14:28This area was an addition.
14:30Okay.
14:30Okay.
14:30So this little solarium here.
14:32You can have like 20 people here right here.
14:33There's only four of us.
14:35Well, I guess with your parents, but.
14:36My parents, so it's our family visiting.
14:39Party house.
14:42I love, I love this granite actually.
14:44I really wish it was wood.
14:46I don't love the white.
14:47It looks like they're painted.
14:49But yeah, I would need a little work.
14:51You got your half bath right here.
14:54I mean, we have to have a third full bath.
14:56Do you have ideas for how we could.
14:58We'll go down the hallway over there.
14:59I think you'll be able to see that.
15:03Primary.
15:04Oh, okay.
15:05This is a good space.
15:06Yeah, I like the space on this.
15:07Oh, I like the barn door.
15:08That's nice.
15:10Oh, wow.
15:11Oh.
15:12That's big.
15:13That's huge, huh?
15:14Okay, so closet.
15:14What would you have a carpet in the bathroom?
15:16That's.
15:17Oh, yeah.
15:17That would have to go immediately.
15:19Yeah.
15:20In a single sink, which is definitely a negative for me.
15:26I think, you know, besides the carpet, it would be livable for now.
15:29But down the line, we'd have.
15:31Yeah.
15:32The projects are kind of adding up.
15:34So we've got three bedrooms down.
15:35Okay.
15:36Okay.
15:36And a full bathroom.
15:38Okay, so newer carpet down here.
15:40Yep.
15:41Wouldn't have to touch that.
15:42Here.
15:42Oh, what is this?
15:43Just a little fun little cubby for the kids.
15:45Oh, yeah.
15:46They would go crazy with that.
15:47And I was just thinking food for thought.
15:49What if your parents lived upstairs and you guys occupied down here?
15:52I mean, not a bad idea.
15:55Oh, okay.
15:56So if that were the case, you know, either this room or that, the third room down here
16:00would be probably your choice.
16:02It is a decent size.
16:03No closet doors.
16:05Of course, this would be your bathroom.
16:07So.
16:08Okay.
16:08Have a look and see if it's something that would work.
16:10Definitely dated again.
16:12But at least double sinks.
16:17Okay, so this could be primary also.
16:20It's definitely large enough.
16:21Take a right through that door.
16:23I want to show you the utility.
16:24Okay.
16:27Oh, that's big.
16:28If you guys did want to make a primary there and push into this room, the utilities are all here.
16:33How much would something like that run?
16:35Do you think so?
16:36How about your 10 to 12 grand?
16:37Okay.
16:37Well, at least this has potential.
16:39I don't love the sound of those numbers, but I mean, it is what it is.
16:42It's possible.
16:42Yeah.
16:43At least it's possible.
16:46Look at that pergola.
16:47Oh, wow.
16:48This is beautiful.
16:49It really is.
16:50And the bar.
16:51And the bar is right here.
16:52Party central.
16:53Party central.
16:53It's definitely a party house.
16:54Yeah.
16:54You got the pass through, the dining room.
16:56Yeah.
16:57And look at this.
16:58Look at the size of your acreage.
16:591.7.
17:001.7.
17:00Do you know about where?
17:02Follow the trees, baby.
17:03All the way back to the corner.
17:04Okay.
17:04And then go to the raspberries all the way back there.
17:06This is what you're paying for, right?
17:07Yeah.
17:08This land.
17:09I could see the kids climbing the trees and running in the grass.
17:12Is that play set?
17:14Yeah, that's included.
17:15Okay.
17:15Okay.
17:16I mean, this is like a dream come true for me.
17:18You can't argue that this isn't gorgeous.
17:19Well, you guys have a lot to think about.
17:21Yeah, we do.
17:27You and your sister here, so it'll be great for mom and I.
17:30Yeah.
17:31Y'all looked at a few houses.
17:32So, Ryan took us to this two-story house because, you know, that's what Jay loves.
17:38I love two-story house.
17:38The bigger the better.
17:40But it's funny because it's the smallest of all three.
17:42It just looks.
17:43Yeah, it looks grand and, you know, that's what matters for him, right?
17:46Yeah.
17:46It's all about the look.
17:47I mean, it's, you know, not exactly my style.
17:50There was an office space downstairs that his parents could use as a bedroom, but it only had a half bath.
17:56So, we would have to add a shower for them to have a full bath on the main floor.
18:00I mean, it's a little more than I wanted to spend, but it's, you know, it could be doable.
18:05So, the next house that we saw was right across the street from Crystal.
18:09Are you sure y'all can be that close together?
18:12Yeah, I mean, it is definitely something that we have to consider.
18:16I mean, I love my sister, but, you know, growing up, we didn't always get along.
18:20I can see Brittany and Crystal yelling across the street at each other.
18:24Don't even have to pick up the phone.
18:25Just yell through the window.
18:28You know, that house is a ranch.
18:30So, from the outside, it looks small, but it does still have enough bedrooms.
18:34How many bedrooms is it?
18:36Six bedrooms.
18:36Oh, my goodness.
18:38For his parents, Ryan suggested having them upstairs in the primary and us living in the basement.
18:44They can't go downstairs, and with the bedroom situation, it might be something that we have to consider.
18:50That house was about $480, which was the least expensive.
18:53Still more than I wanted to spend, but, I mean, it was mostly move-in ready.
18:57Less money enough to spend there.
18:58Yeah, but, you know, I think we should spend a little more and get what we really want.
19:03Or what you really want.
19:08One of the houses we saw had over a 1.7-acre lot, and it's a ranch.
19:14Good for her.
19:16It was probably about, like, 15, 20-minute drive from here.
19:20It was another situation where we would have to consider living in the basement.
19:24The parents would need to live in the primary.
19:26There's really no other room that would work for them there.
19:28One of the weirdest things that house had was the carpet in the bathroom.
19:33Which would have to go immediately.
19:34The one thing we agreed on was that.
19:36It was the most expensive.
19:37It was $539,900.
19:52I was thinking of putting a vase together.
19:53All right, I think I'm going to make some lunch.
19:55We chose the six-bedroom traditional ranch.
19:58Even though it is across the street from Crystal.
20:03It'll give him a little taste of what I've been dealing with with his family in our house.
20:08I'm actually pretty okay with that.
20:10So, you know, if we need someone to watch the kids, they're right across the street from us.
20:14At the end of the day, we really made our decision on what would be best for the whole family,
20:18including the kids.
20:19And having families so close is really a priceless thing for them.
20:22I definitely didn't get my acreage, but I will sacrifice that for my family.
20:28He says that, but he's already talked to me about making sure that we buy a separate piece
20:33of acreage down the line.
20:34That will definitely happen.
20:35It's a temporary sacrifice for him.
20:37What do you think your parents will think?
20:39I think they're going to love it.
20:41The house will list it for $480,000 and we purchased it for $478,500.
20:46More than I really wanted.
20:47But at the end of the day, you have to sacrifice something.
20:51And in order to get something that was going to work for our family,
20:53that's what we needed to spend.
20:54So I'm okay with it now.
20:55So we closed about a week ago and we're not fully moved in yet.
20:59We got carpet in.
21:01It took a little longer.
21:02So we're still trying to get settled.
21:03His parents are coming with the kids in a couple days.
21:06So we focused on getting the big pieces of furniture set up,
21:09and then we'll be moving in all the rest kind of as we find time.
21:13I think this was the right choice for us, for sure.
21:16Absolutely.
21:17The life in Idaho is really different from Virginia.
21:20It's more peaceful.
21:21It's quiet.
21:22I just envision our kids riding bikes down the street and making friends,
21:27but I just can't wait to see them grow here.
