00:00Hi, I'm Rhiann Daly, and I am backstage at Glastonbury with Michelle from Japanese Breakfast.
00:10Hello.
00:10How's it going?
00:11Good, how are you?
00:12I'm good, thank you.
00:13As we were just saying, you finally got to play Glastonbury today.
00:16You were meant to play here in 2023, but had to cancel because of travel issues.
00:20Yeah, it was a major bucket list two years ago.
00:24And it's also, in the history of Japanese Breakfast, the only show that we've ever not been able to play
00:28because of something that we've done, yeah.
00:30Yeah, so how did it feel to finally be able to get on the stage there earlier?
00:33It was hard won, you know.
00:34Our bus broke down in Sweden a couple days ago, and we still don't have a working bus.
00:39It was a really intense, hard time for our band and crew, but we did it, and it felt really hard won.
00:44What was it like writing for films, writing for video games, as you did with Sable,
00:47compared to writing for your own projects?
00:49It's really fun because it's such a direct assignment, you know.
00:53And I think especially for Melancholy Brunettes and Sad Women, our new record,
00:56it's a very moody and, at times, difficult album, very somber record.
01:03So it followed that kind of classic pop structure.
01:06It was really fun to get to return to this year.
01:08Yeah, and you have more new music coming out next month with Silica Gel.
01:11Yeah.
01:11Very exciting.
01:12Yes, yes.
01:13I was so honored that they tapped me to do a feature with them.
01:17And I spent the last year living in Korea, studying Korean, and so I felt compelled to write.
01:22Everyone was always like, when are you going to write your Korean song?
01:24And so I wrote Korean lyrics for the first time, and yeah, that will be debuting next month.
01:29In the time that you spent in Korea, did you feel like you made a new community within the artists there?
01:34100%.
01:34There's a lot of creativity right over there, and I'm excited to see it make more waves.
01:39Yeah.
01:40Are there any other artists from Korea that you'd want to work with?
01:42I love Bombing Tiger.
01:45Omega was just in our music video, and their creative director, San, is incredible.
01:49But, yeah, I feel very lucky getting to work with Silica Gel.
01:52Yeah, well, thank you so much for talking to me, Michelle.
01:54Enjoy the rest of your day.
