One in ten people of working age in Britain are claiming a sickness or working disability of some kind. That number, unbelievably, is rising by 100,000 people every single day.Already, the bill for this is about £75 billion a year. It’s due to rise, by 2030, to about £100 billion a year.Perhaps it’s not surprising the Chancellor and the Prime Minister are trying to cut some aspects of this. This is going down incredibly badly by the Labour backbenches. It would appear around 136 Labour backbenchers right now are in full, open revolt. When you take out those with ministerial positions, it’s nearly half the backbench Labour Party.I wonder what will happen. There’s talk the Prime Minister has changed his diary. He will try to ease rebel’s fears by speeding up payment of funds to help them back into work and review the policies to see the impact of them after a short period of time. But I wonder if any of this is enough? It’s not even one year since Starmer was elected and he really has a major problem with the backbenches.I suspect this is not just about these payments. I suspect it’s about Winter Fuel Allowance.I suspect he has upset large parts of his party, and the public too.

00:00Good evening. One in ten people of working age in Britain is claiming a sickness or disability benefit of some kind.
00:07That number is rising, unbelievably, by 1,000 people every single day.
00:13Already, the bill for this is about £75 billion a year.
00:18It's due to rise, unbelievably, by 2030 to perhaps £100 billion a year.
00:23So perhaps it's not surprising in some ways that the Chancellor, the Prime Minister, are trying to reduce some aspects of this bill.
00:32Perhaps a cut of around about £5 billion.
00:36But this is going down incredibly badly with the Labour-backed benches.
00:41It would appear about 136 Labour-backed benches right now are in full, open revolt.
00:48When you take out those that have ministerial positions, it's nearly half the backbench Labour Party.
00:57I wonder. I wonder what will happen.
00:59There's talk today that the Prime Minister has changed his diary.
01:03He'll try to ease rebels' fears by saying they'll speed up payment of funds to help people back into work.
01:09They'll review the policies to see the impact of them after a short period of time.
01:15But I wonder whether any of this is actually enough.
01:20It's not even one year since Starmer was elected, and he really has now a major problem with the backbenches.
01:27I suspect this isn't just around these payments.
01:32I suspect it's about winter fuel allowance.
01:34I suspect he's actually upset some quite large sections of his party, and indeed the public too.
01:41So, I'm keen to get your thoughts on this.
01:43How serious is this for the Prime Minister?
