Former Welterweight Champions Shawn Porter and Andre Berto face off in an elimination fight to determine who fights Keith Thurman.
Transcript
00:00Andre Berto and Sean Porter for a chance to challenge Keith Thurman for his WBC title.
00:08Well fans, we are ready for the main event of the evening.
00:13And now making his way to the ring, here is the former IBF welterweight champion of the world,
00:20Showtime, Sean Porter!
00:3029-year-old Showtime, Sean Porter. Where's that gregarious face? There he is, the Apple Bowl Showtime!
00:38A fan favorite here in Brooklyn and Al. He would have loved to have had more than one fight last year,
00:44even though his lone contest produced one of the best scraps of 2016.
00:48One that was conjoined twins close against Keith one-time Thurman.
00:53But his focus now has to be on Andre Berto, but he has made it clear he wants to do it two times
00:59with one-time.
01:01Yeah, you know, Sean Porter, his big bungaboo has been the inactivity because he has performed so well,
01:07and really if you think about it, but for a few points here and there on scorecards
01:11against Kell Brook and Keith Thurman, he could be the person that people think of as the top
01:16welterweight in this division.
01:19So he feels like he can get the job done here tonight and fight one more time this year and make it work.
01:29And now, he is the two-time welterweight champion of the world, Andre Berto!
01:44Quite essential crossroads contest for 33-year-old Andre Berto.
01:56Like Porter, he has been to the summit.
01:58In fact, he's been to the summit of 147, Paulie, on two different occasions.
02:03But Berto's boxing career has been a longer rollercoaster ride than Steel Dragon 2000.
02:08He's taken four L's.
02:10He's avenged his first and most bitter defeat against Victor Ortiz in his last fight.
02:15But what's he have to do to ensure that this is not his last fight as a headliner?
02:20Well, he's got to make sure he comes out with all the goods, all the sharpness, listens to his corner and verge of Hunter.
02:25And, of course, mentally focused because Sean Porter's a guy that's going to pressure him every second of every round.
02:30So mentally, that can almost break you, especially when you're at that age that Andre Berto is at.
02:35You start to really deal with pressure every second of every round a little bit worse than you used to as a younger fighter when you're hungrier and you're lying.
02:41You know, Andre Berto, you say all the right things when you're this age.
02:45Andre Berto's saying all the right things.
02:46In the ring is when you really find out how badly you want it because in the ring, there's moments where you will suffer.
02:52This fight, there will be moments when Andre Berto will suffer.
02:54Will he answer the call or will he have those subtle doubts in his mind that say,
03:00Man, at my age, do I really still want to do this after all the millions I've made?
03:03That's the tricky thing about aging in boxing.
03:05The hourglass starts to run out on your career.
03:07It's up to you to make the proper decisions underneath the pressure and the lights.
03:11This fight's never worn a negative Yelp review.
03:14Al, take us through the numbers for this main event, a welterweight title elimination bump.
03:20Well, the physical dimensions of these fighters are very, very similar.
03:24The one number that does jump out at you is the age of Andre Berto,
03:28how many miles are on the tread of those wheels.
03:32One other important number, as we've pointed out in this broadcast,
03:34the fact that Porter is coming in off a 10-month layoff,
03:38Berto off a 12-month layoff, who will be sharper, especially at the beginning of this fight.
03:42So we are set for the main event, Barclays Center, Brooklyn.
03:48And here comes the inimitable voice of Jimmy Lennon Jr.

06:19fighting out of the blue corner,

06:40he is currently ranked the WBC number four contender.
06:44Please welcome the former IBF,
06:47the former WBC welterweight champion of the world,
06:51introducing Andre Berto!
07:02Once again, our referee in charge now to give instructions is Mark Nelson.
07:10Andre, gentlemen, you received my instructions in the dressing room.
07:15You both know exactly what I expect.
07:17A good, clean fight.
07:20Obey my commands and protect yourself at all times.
07:23Touch him up.
07:24Good luck to both of you.
07:26A referee, Mark Nelson,
07:28with final instructions.
07:31At the age of 33,
07:33the battle-hardened Andre Berto knows father time could come calling at any time.
07:37However, he feels he can still be the cream of the crop.
07:40Hence his mantra,
07:42the harvest is coming.
07:44Porter says you're going to see excitement.
07:46You're going to see some heavy punches landed.
07:48And ultimately,
07:48you're going to see two great warriors duke it out
07:51and leave their hearts in the ring.
07:57Lights, camera,
07:58and what we hope will best describe this welterweight showdown.
08:02Action begins with showtime.
08:04Sean Porter and Andre Berto.
08:07Berto in the blue, green, and yellow.
08:10Berto sports the black and white.
08:12Porter wants to attack carefully
08:19and attack smartly.
08:21He and his father both talked about the fact
08:24that they want to work their way in
08:26but not necessarily stay on the inside.
08:28Yeah, they studied the Floyd Mayweather fight
08:30with Andre Berto,
08:31and they talked about taking a few notes on that fight.
08:36Now, Paulie,
08:37do you think that's the right strategy
08:38against a guy like Berto?
08:39Here's the thing.
08:40I think Porter's best asset
08:42is the fact that he pressures
08:43and he throws a lot of punches
08:44and he keeps you both mentally
08:45and physically occupied
08:46every second of every round.
08:48But a guy like Berto,
08:48who's got a sharp counter uppercut
08:50and can punch a little bit,
08:51you want to be leery of that at times.
08:54Of course, having said that,
08:56Keith Thurman was a big puncher
08:57and Porter attacked him
08:58and had a lot of success in that fight.
09:00So I think Porter's best asset
09:02is to pressure a lot.
09:03If he boxes,
09:04it may throw Berto off for a round or two,
09:06but I think your best bet
09:07is not to box Berto.
09:08I feel like Berto would be the better boxer.
09:09Well, I have a feeling
09:11that we're going to see
09:11a lot of what is transpiring early here, Al,
09:14with, you know,
09:15Human Television Derby,
09:16the boxing version of bumper cars
09:18as they collide
09:19and it's not always beautiful.
09:20It's sometimes brutal,
09:21but it can be effective.
09:23Sean Porter,
09:24former football player
09:25in the high school
09:25who started fighting at 165
09:28because he's a football player.
09:29He's strong on the inside
09:31and you saw him
09:32kind of pushing Berto around there.
09:34And Berto comes from a,
09:35well, a family of fighters.
09:37His father, Giselle,
09:39competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
09:41His brother, Edson,
09:42was a mixed martial artist.
09:43His sisters,
09:44I mean,
09:45it's a family of Robert's athletes.
09:47Yeah, you don't want to get caught
09:48in an alleyway
09:49against those guys.
09:50No.
09:50And at the dinner table,
09:51do not reach for food
09:53without knowing it's okay.
09:55Without using your proper etiquette.
09:58A minute left
09:59in the opening round.
10:02When this fight was announced,
10:04it was expected
10:05that it would be action-packed
10:07and to go on Berto
10:09with a double jab
10:10that caught the attention of Porter.
10:14And that right there
10:14is what I'm saying.
10:15Once Berto starts getting
10:16into a timing rhythm,
10:17I'm not sure Porter can outbox him.
10:19You know,
10:19but I do think Porter
10:21can really make Berto uncomfortable
10:22with a lot of pressure.
10:23As Berto tends to make
10:24a lot of other guys
10:25uncomfortable with that pressure.
10:26And there was
10:27Berto taking a page
10:28out of his family's
10:29other playbook.
10:30There's wrestlers,
10:30there's mixed martial artists
10:31and looking for a
10:33front guillotine there, Al.
10:35Not outboxing.
10:36I was just going to say that.
10:38Darn it.
10:44Seconds counting down
10:46to the opening round
10:47and that windmill right hand
10:49just missed for Porter
10:51as he attacks the body
10:52in the clinch.
10:53So, a feeling-out process
10:55getting to know you round
10:56here in Brooklyn.
11:06For Andre Berto,
11:07something that
11:08in the keys to victory
11:10we saw him do
11:11in round number one,
11:12stay off the ropes
11:12and it helped him be effective.
11:15Two punches can get
11:16to Sean Porter.
11:17One is the counter left hook
11:18and Berto has a very good one.
11:21The other punch
11:22that Berto possesses
11:23is the uppercut
11:24and we have seen
11:25that punch land
11:27against Sean Porter.
11:29As for Sean Porter,
11:31I believe he's got
11:32to use his jab
11:32to get on the inside
11:34and push the pace
11:35of this fight.
11:36It's a power jab.
11:37It's a very good punch.
11:38We did see him work
11:39the body very well
11:40at times
11:41in round number one.
11:42And we saw him
11:43wing a big overhand right
11:45right at the end
11:46of the round.
11:46He wants to get
11:47that punch in.
11:58The bell in round two.
11:59The Porter camp
12:00told us that
12:01what probably cost him
12:03the incredible fight
12:05against Keith Thurman
12:06was Porter's defense.
12:09He admitted that
12:10they've been working
12:10on his defense in camp
12:12of moving out of the way
12:12after throwing punches
12:13and they think it will
12:15it bode them well
12:17in this fight
12:18against Berto.
12:18And it isn't that
12:19Porter fought bad
12:20defensively in that fight
12:21but just could improve.
12:22You know,
12:23Berto normally throws
12:25about ten punches
12:26less per round
12:27than Porter.
12:28They both threw
12:29fewer punches
12:30than they normally do
12:31but Porter did
12:32throw more
12:33in round number one.
12:35Porter changes levels
12:36attacks the body
12:37before they clinch.
12:38This is where Porter
12:39is effective.
12:41He doesn't accept
12:41any clinches.
12:42He will physically
12:43maul you.
12:44Al, you mentioned
12:45that him being
12:45a former football player
12:46also a former
12:46high school wrestler
12:47so physically
12:48he can push you around
12:49and create space
12:50in there.
12:50He's doing a great job
12:52working the body.
12:53And Berto was starting
12:53to show some swelling
12:54on that right eye
12:54and got hit with a hook
12:55inside or a headbutt
12:56but who knows.
12:56And maybe Berto
12:58was trying to motivate
12:59himself but he did tell us
13:00he feels he's faster,
13:01stronger, more explosive
13:03than Porter.
13:04He said his experience
13:05is going to prove
13:06to be the difference
13:07in this fight.
13:08He also told us
13:09that while Porter
13:09is a pressure fighter
13:10a lot of it
13:11isn't effective pressure
13:12just a lot of mauling
13:13as you alluded to,
13:14Paulie.
13:15A moment ago though
13:16that nice right hand
13:17by Porter landed
13:19so on the inside
13:21it was a very good punch.
13:22And Mauro you made a point
13:22where Berto's talking
13:23about the explosiveness.
13:24A prime Andre Berto
13:25was very explosive.
13:27I just don't know
13:27at what point
13:28how close he is
13:31to his prime here
13:31because Porter is explosive.
13:34Referee's going to have
13:35his hands full literally
13:36telling both fighters
13:37to keep it clean
13:38and now Porter has
13:39Porter on the ropes
13:40creating enough distance
13:42where they're both
13:42throwing punches
13:44at close quarters.
13:46And this is where
13:47Porter is effective.
13:48This is where Porter
13:49makes you uncomfortable
13:49and comfortable
13:50and it's not just
13:52physical,
13:52it's also mental.
13:53Well you can't
13:54discount the heart
13:55and the warrior spirit
13:56of Andre Berto.
13:58Final minute
13:58of just the second round
14:00and already
14:01Fistic Fireworks here
14:02as expected.
14:04Berto looking to hang on.
14:06And I don't know
14:07he's not going to hang on
14:07all the time.
14:08And he was depleted.
14:09Yeah, he's looking to hang on
14:10because he wants to
14:11make the punches stop.
14:12That's the thing.
14:13They start raining on you.
14:14You start wanting to make them
14:15stop coming forward.
14:16He's cut wild.
14:16Porter's cut bad.
14:17And it was a clash
14:18ahead since Berto indicated.
14:21Accidental butt.
14:21And the referee
14:22has now made it official
14:23accidental butt.
14:26Porter has been cut
14:27many times
14:28including
14:28in his last fight
14:30against Keith Thurman
14:30under the left eye.
14:31But that is a nasty gash
14:33as we head into
14:34the home stretch
14:35of round two.
14:37Man, that's a better one, man.
14:39I don't know, man.
14:40They might have to stop this week.
14:42And that's also the risk
14:43about a Sean Porter fight.
14:44You know, he's always
14:45coming in forward.
14:46A lot of times
14:46he leads with his head.
14:48But he's so aggressive.
14:49And he does really
14:49at times approach it
14:50like he's still
14:51on the gridiron.
14:53Yeah.
14:53Oh, and Berto up out,
14:54but he goes down.
14:56Three, four, five,
14:59six, seven, eight.
15:02You good?
15:03It's right here.
15:05Berto seems okay,
15:06but Porter responding
15:07like a warrior
15:08to the blood on his face.
15:09And Berto takes the canvas
15:11for the eighth time
15:12in his career,
15:13frustrated at the turn
15:15of events of that round.
15:17And Berto shaking his head
15:18on the way back
15:19to the corner.
15:19Porter, we'll bring that
15:21out of you.
15:21Let me have him.
15:22B, B.
15:24You love him.
15:25They fuck nothing to me.
15:28Hey, what you doing?
15:29It's going to be moments
15:30like that.
15:31The way you're overcoming
15:32is by being that
15:33break-like shot.
15:34Stay focused and blank.
15:36He's got a cut eye now.
15:37Understand?
15:39He's got to fight like that.
15:40So in the inside,
15:42don't raise your legs up.
15:43Talk about the overhand
15:44right for Sean Porter,
15:46and here's where he gets low.
15:47Sneak him in, okay?
15:49Takes a left hook
15:50from Berto,
15:51but delivers his own right hand
15:53that bounces off the head
15:54of Berto and knocks him down.
15:57So we saw two elements there.
15:59We saw Berto landing
16:00the counter left hook,
16:01but then we saw Porter
16:02landing the right.
16:03And you get a look at that cut,
16:04which they did a pretty
16:05good job on.
16:06And then the corner.
16:10This is round number three,
16:13and things already heating up
16:16between Showtime's
16:17Sean Porter and Andre Berto.
16:19The carrot dangling
16:21in front of them,
16:22an opportunity to challenge
16:23Keith Thurman
16:24for the WBC's green belt.
16:26In the last round,
16:3020 of the landed punches,
16:32according to Showstats,
16:32by Porter were to the body.
16:34He really went downstairs
16:35very effectively.
16:36Of course,
16:38Berto had the green belt
16:41the one time,
16:42then suffered a first loss
16:45against Victor Ortiz
16:46in what was the fight
16:47of the year that year.
16:48Also a savage affair
16:49against Robert Guerrero.
16:51And what about when he
16:52ripped apart his right shoulder
16:53in the fourth round
16:54of that fight
16:55with Jesus Soto Caras
16:56and still went to the 12th.
16:57So again,
16:58you can say many things
17:00about Andre Berto,
17:01Pauli,
17:02and maybe the journey he took,
17:03but you cannot question
17:04his character and heart.
17:05Oh, absolutely.
17:06And you said he comes
17:06from a family of fighters.
17:08They come fighting
17:09out of the womb
17:10and that's mental and physical.
17:12Of course,
17:13he's going to be
17:14mentally tested here
17:15in this fight
17:15because he took another
17:16buck from Porter.
17:18This is what I was talking
17:19about earlier in the fight.
17:19You've made your millions.
17:21You've made a ton of money.
17:23You've had a great career
17:24if you're Andre Berto.
17:25You start to ask yourself
17:26when you're in a fight like this,
17:27do I really need this?
17:28I'm telling you,
17:28guys, it's a weird feeling.
17:30You know,
17:30because mentally
17:31this kind of fight,
17:32it puts you in places
17:33where you're not comfortable.
17:36There.
17:37Fierce exchange.
17:41Berto trying to hang on.
17:43Mark Nelson
17:44is faced with decisions
17:46every five seconds
17:47in this fight.
17:47Oh, right hand by Porter.
17:48Bats Berto up.
17:51Look at Porter.
17:51He will not accept the clinch.
17:53He will not accept the clinch.
17:54It may not be textbook,
17:56but Porter's shoeshine
17:58in the body of Berto.
17:59Berto trying to lean in.
18:01Those are big body shots.
18:02Yeah, Porter treating Berto's body
18:04like it's filled with candy
18:06along the ropes.
18:07It's a minute left
18:08in the third.
18:09And whether they are or not,
18:10this is what I'm talking about
18:11with the mental pressure
18:12on the other side.
18:12Right uppercut on the inside.
18:13Berto came back with one.
18:16Berto came back with one.
18:17We've seen the blood of Sean Porter
18:33with the guts of both of these warriors,
18:35and we're just heading into the tail end
18:38of round three out.
18:40Berto would love to land
18:42either one of those nice left hooks
18:43or there he tries the uppercut.
18:45He needs to land something significant
18:47to keep Porter off him.
18:48And I think Berto has to go back
18:49to the base
18:50and start off the jab again.
18:51There's the uppercut.
18:52Right uppercut on the inside.
18:53Oh, but there's a rabbit punch
18:55by Berto.
18:56There's also no space.
18:57Don't rabbit punch.
18:59Berto needs a little bit of space
19:01to throw that uppercut.
19:02He needs a little bit of space
19:02in general.
19:03He's got to use his jab more.
19:04You see it right here.
19:04He's out of distance.
19:05He's not using that jab.
19:06If you're being out jabbed
19:08by Porter, it's a bad sign.
19:12Nine minutes of a lapse.
19:13Keith Thurman, of course,
19:15watching with vested interest.
19:17After all, he's the man
19:18who unified the titles.
19:20The winner will be
19:21the mandatory challenger
19:22for Thurman's WBC belt.
19:25We'll take a look back
19:26and we saw the aggressiveness
19:29of Porter.
19:30Now, that's important.
19:31Look, he used the jab
19:32to get inside.
19:33Then he was able to throw
19:35this array of punches.
19:36Not everything landing,
19:38but the jab got him here
19:39where he could rip the hook,
19:41throw the body,
19:42and then here was Andre Berto
19:43with some frustration
19:44with a clear rabbit punch
19:47as Porter had his head
19:49away from the head of Berto
19:50so there was no butt involved.
19:52Round four, and quickly,
19:53Paulie, why are you so high
19:54on Errol Spence?
19:56Well, I think, you know,
19:57he's got the southpaw stance,
19:58great body puncher,
19:59solid timing fighter,
20:01fundamentally sound.
20:02I mean, there's not a lot
20:03to not like about Errol Spence.
20:05Explosive and fun to watch,
20:07great personality,
20:09you know, very marketable fighter.
20:11Porter sticks the jab,
20:13and then they grapple,
20:16and Berto's frustration,
20:18and the referee said,
20:20come on, let's clean it up,
20:21but Berto's frustration
20:22written all over his face.
20:25It's hard to referee
20:25a Sean Porter fight,
20:26you know, and if you go
20:27into a fight with Sean Porter,
20:28you can't expect the referee
20:29to really help him much.
20:30Good one, too,
20:31as Porter's momentarily blinded Berto
20:33with the jab.
20:33Berto trying to attack the body
20:35and just pushing.
20:37It's a misnomer, though,
20:39to think that Sean Porter
20:40is just about roughhousing,
20:41because you look at him
20:42landing all these nice,
20:44short punches to the body
20:45and the head.
20:46He's an effective fighter,
20:47as well.
20:48He lands a lot of punches.
20:51A lot of it, though,
20:51he's at close range out.
20:53Yeah, no, I agree,
20:54but I'm just saying
20:55it's not just about
20:56the roughhousing.
20:56It's not,
20:57but a lot of the roughhousing
20:57creates the openings.
20:58Yes, absolutely.
20:59That's where he's at,
21:00at his most effective.
21:02I agree,
21:03but look at those
21:03short counterpunches
21:04when Berto's on the inside.
21:06I'm saying he can do it.
21:08And you're right,
21:09it's created because
21:10he gets on the inside like that.
21:11Yeah, you know what it is,
21:12how you start to
21:13want to get out of there,
21:14you don't know where to go.
21:15You're like,
21:15man, how do I get this guy
21:16off me?
21:16I can't even fight him off
21:17because he's smothering
21:18my own offense.
21:19You know, like, look,
21:19Berto wants to win
21:20for the uppercut here,
21:21but where is it?
21:21Yeah.
21:22Porto's the pitch away.
21:23Left end of the fourth round
21:24and watch your hands.
21:26Dirty boxing at its best.
21:28Well, you're seeing it.
21:28Berto trying to fight off
21:29the ropes,
21:30clubbing right hands.
21:32That was the uppercut
21:33by Berto.
21:34Yeah, finally.
21:35Finally,
21:35he was able to get that punch in.
21:37Accidental hit.
21:38Another Berto.
21:39Accidental headbutt.
21:40Another.
21:41Accidental hitbutt.
21:42Accidental hitbutt.
21:44And it's Porter
21:45that keeps getting cut.
21:46And Berto wanted
21:47to get right back out of it.
21:48He wanted to take the momentum
21:49from landing that uppercut.
21:50Wow, he's cut over both eyes.
21:52And the left eye
21:53of Sean Porter
21:54beginning to swell badly.
21:55And again,
21:56they threw caution
21:57to the wind
21:58before sticking to each other
22:01like Velcro.
22:02Final 60 of the fourth.
22:03They're going to get some work
22:08in that corner round
22:09with that two cuts
22:10in Porter's eye
22:11and they're both
22:11in a bad spot.
22:12And they're both
22:12leaning forward
22:13and even like
22:14the angles around here
22:15they're just
22:17running forward.
22:18They're leaning forward
22:19but a lot of the headbutt
22:20comes from the Porter's side.
22:21You know,
22:21the forward good things
22:22Porter does.
22:23In my hand by Porter
22:23misses
22:24with a sweeping left hook.
22:26Berto's cut too.
22:26All right, uppercut
22:34by Berto.
22:36Porter's got to be careful.
22:37Porter's got to be careful
22:38without leaning inside.
22:40Well, Berto's finally
22:41found a hope
22:42for that uppercut
22:43in this round.
22:47Accidental butts!
22:49Mark Nelson,
22:50the referee,
22:51has had easier nights
22:52at the office
22:52and yes,
22:53Berto cut
22:54due to an accidental butt.
22:56No, no, doctor!
23:04Doctor!
23:05As a legendary
23:06Jim Ross would say,
23:07this is a bowling shoe
23:08ugly owl.
23:10I know you worked with him.
23:12Yes, that's a good line.
23:15Final seconds
23:16of the fourth
23:16and Porter attacking
23:17the body again.
23:19Berto leaning in.
23:22And we need to get
23:23through the fourth round
23:24to make it official
23:25due to all these
23:27cuts
23:28due to the accident
23:29of butts
23:29and we do!
23:42Now you're working.
23:43Listen,
23:43the fight is easier
23:45than this, okay?
23:46Pour some water
23:47down there.
23:48The fight is easier
23:49than this, okay?
23:51Much easier
23:51if you're boxing now.
23:53He's wild and tough.
23:54Make it crunches,
23:55pinpoint and sharp.
23:57Don't pop nothing, okay?
23:59And you will have
24:00this fight over.
24:03Get these rounds
24:04in the book.
24:05I refuse, okay?
24:06Keep winning these rounds.
24:07Keep winning these rounds.
24:10Keep winning these rounds
24:11for me, all right?
24:12I need more jabs
24:13and faints.
24:14Step around this man.
24:16I want you on the inside
24:17right there with him, okay?
24:18Your hands should be
24:18on either side.
24:20Hold up.
24:21Hands should be
24:21on either side.
24:23Boxing for me.
24:24Boxing for me.
24:25Don't cock your punches.
24:26Okay?
24:26So all the headbots
24:32have been deemed accidental.
24:34We are in round five
24:36and while these two
24:37are going at it
24:38in a ring,
24:39this could very well
24:40be contested
24:41in a back alley
24:42the way things
24:43have transpired.
24:44Mauro Ranallo,
24:45Albertstein,
24:45Pauli Malignaggi
24:46at ringside
24:47for Andre Berto,
24:49Sean Porter,
24:50welterweight title
24:51elimination bout.
24:53You see how Berto
24:53pushed off Berto
24:54in disgust?
24:55That was like,
24:56I'm disgusted
24:57with you, Push.
24:58And I'll tell you,
24:59meanwhile Porter
24:59was landing
25:00big body shots.
25:01That's the thing, man.
25:02Yeah.
25:05Wow.
25:08The Javs
25:09have been abandoned
25:11at close range
25:13and Porter
25:14leaning in
25:14but Berto again
25:15trying to fight him off.
25:17I got you.
25:17I got you.
25:19The Cutman
25:21deserving bonuses
25:22tonight
25:22and this may not be
25:23this...
25:24I'm going to go
25:25way back here.
25:26This is kind of like
25:27Carmen Basilio
25:28and Gene Fulman
25:28fighting here.
25:29That's what it really is.
25:30Fulman did have a rough
25:31integrity style.
25:33In technical.
25:34Yeah, precisely.
25:35I mean,
25:35that's just what it feels like.
25:39And the question
25:41then becomes, guys,
25:42is Porter
25:43putting the pedal
25:44to the metal
25:45and putting on the gas
25:46because of the cuts?
25:47Well, and of course,
25:47we would go to the scorecards
25:49if they stopped this fight
25:50because of the cuts
25:51on either fighter.
25:53So, you want to win rounds,
25:55obviously.
25:55I would say
25:56Porter's likely
25:57ahead in this fight.
25:58Yeah.
25:58Yeah.
25:58kind of action
26:09you might find
26:09with a game
26:10reserve
26:11with all of this
26:12ramming
26:13and the bodies
26:14colliding
26:15with a minute 13
26:16left in the fifth.
26:17Berto trying
26:18to start
26:18being first here.
26:19Yeah.
26:20Trying to make it
26:21started after.
26:21Over the top
26:22with a right hand.
26:27Under a minute
26:28left now
26:29in the fifth frame.
26:31And you have to.
26:32Time out.
26:33Imagine.
26:34Doctor.
26:36Well.
26:37Hey, the plastic surgeon
26:38is looking at
26:38the blood tonight.
26:42Out of the crowd
26:43he's moving.
26:44He's working at all.
26:47Watch it.
26:48Track it.
26:48Track it.
26:52Wow.
26:53I have a question.
26:54Dr. Womowski
26:55examining the cut.
26:56Why are they always
26:57looking at
26:58Berto's cuts
26:58but not Porter's?
26:59With all due respect,
27:00Porter's cut over
27:01both eyes.
27:02Well, Dr. Avery Brown
27:03has checked out
27:05Porter's cut
27:05but you're right,
27:06Al, not at this time
27:07but in between rounds.
27:07Yeah, but I mean
27:08not in the middle of rounds.
27:09Twice in the middle of rounds
27:10Berto's been.
27:10Oh, good counter
27:11right hand
27:12by Porter.
27:14Quick, Tom,
27:14be careful.
27:16Man.
27:17See a little spin move
27:19Porter made
27:20that's all psychological
27:21work for.
27:22I have such respect
27:23for Sean Porter's
27:24aggressiveness.
27:25I know it's rough.
27:26I know it doesn't
27:28always look pretty
27:28but man.
27:29If it's pretty
27:31it's not Porter's fight.
27:31You're right.
27:32This is how he wins.
27:33Yes.
27:35Final 15 seconds
27:36of the fifth frame.
27:38And it's been a very close
27:49encounter
27:50of the Welker Recon
27:51here in Brooklyn.
27:59You got this.
28:00You got this.
28:01B.
28:02Listen to me
28:04one time.
28:05Box him in the middle.
28:06Don't load up nothing.
28:08Much of the storyline
28:09in this fight now
28:10revolves around
28:11the cuts of various
28:12of both of the fighters.
28:14And here we see
28:15on the inside
28:17Porter's
28:18head banging
28:19against Andre Berto's
28:21and that created
28:23the cut over
28:23the left eye
28:24of Andre Berto.
28:27In round four
28:28as Berto comes in
28:32we're going to see
28:34an elbow
28:35Oh.
28:36That's a nice one.
28:37From Sean Porter
28:39that bounces off
28:40the left eye
28:41of Andre Berto.
28:44And as the left hand
28:45was extended
28:45That was like half jam,
28:46half hook.
28:47All elbow though.
28:48So it's been rough
28:50in there.
28:50Not for the faint
28:51of heart.
28:52Doctor wants to see you.
28:54The doctor would
28:55like to see you.
28:56Doctors are making
28:57house calls here.
28:58It's going to be
29:13come on.
29:17This is going to
29:18become a mental
29:18battle of attrition.
29:20And they once again
29:33renew hostilities here
29:35in round number six
29:38scheduled for 12.
29:39I'll tell you,
29:39credit to Porter guys
29:40because I'll tell you
29:41what, he's probably
29:41up in the fight.
29:42He's got two cuts
29:43over both eyes.
29:44He could easily say
29:44I can't see
29:45and win this fight
29:46on the cards.
29:46I mean, in my opinion.
29:48And it has been done
29:49before.
29:50And a reminder
29:52because of what
29:53Paul is saying,
29:54if this fight
29:55were stopped
29:56due to those cuts,
29:57they would go
29:57to the scorecards.
29:58let's bring in our
30:05unofficial Showtime
30:07championship boxing
30:08score, Steve Farwood.
30:09Oh, Mo, I don't think
30:10this has been a very
30:11difficult fight to score.
30:12You see, I have Porter
30:13up 49-45.
30:14The first round,
30:14very little happened.
30:16Berto landed the
30:16cleaner punches.
30:17Otherwise, it's been all
30:18Sean Porter.
30:20And as you guys
30:21have pointed out,
30:22should this fight end
30:22now, I think it's
30:23pretty clear that he's
30:24ahead on all three
30:25cards.
30:27And by the way,
30:27when I mentioned
30:28it was a very close
30:28encounter, I meant
30:29physically, but just
30:30anything else.
30:31I mean, it's incredible
30:32and close.
30:33I'll tell you what,
30:34it might not be
30:35close in the cards,
30:35but Berto is still
30:36live in there.
30:37I mean, he still
30:37intends to win.
30:38There's some times
30:39in a fight where
30:39a fighter's still in there,
30:41but he's gotten
30:41the winning mentality
30:42beaten out of him.
30:43I don't see that
30:43Andre Berto.
30:44I see him still
30:44trying to win the fight.
30:45I see him still
30:46trying to look for
30:46and then clipped him
30:51with the left.
30:53Those are the two
30:53punches you have to
30:54throw against Sean
30:55Porter.
30:55You've got to land
30:56the left and you've
30:57got to land the uppercut.
30:58Those are important
30:59weapons.
31:00A little bit more
31:01reactive this round
31:02is Berto on the
31:02timing shots.
31:04Kudos to both
31:05the cut men.
31:06We have Hal
31:07Chernoff and
31:08Showtime Sean
31:09Porter.
31:09Corner end!
31:10That was a slip.
31:13Donald Eames in
31:14Berto's quarter.
31:15Right after Berto
31:16landed a very nice
31:17uppercut.
31:18Yeah, and as I'm
31:18saying, he's starting
31:19to see the openings
31:20for the uppercut.
31:20He's starting to
31:21really hone in on it.
31:22Oh, stiff jab
31:23by Porter's score.
31:24And that's what
31:24Porter's got to do
31:25on his way in.
31:25He's got to continue
31:26to jab.
31:27Yeah, double jab
31:28misses with the right.
31:29And throw off
31:30the timing.
31:31Throw off Berto's
31:31ability to time him.
31:33That jab will do
31:34that.
31:34Final minute of the
31:35sixth.
31:36There it is again.
31:38We're seeing
31:38Andre Berto move
31:39more.
31:40That's not normally
31:40his stocking trade.
31:43Berto absorbing
31:45the combination
31:47by Porter,
31:47not all of those
31:48punches scoring.
31:50But still,
31:51Porter looking to
31:52impose his presence
31:54on not only Berto,
31:55but the judges.
31:56You see here,
31:57Porter's got to be
31:58first in the gym.
31:58Pivot by Porter
31:59and works the body
32:00effectively along the
32:01ropes.
32:01Watch out of there.
32:04Wait, I got it.
32:05I got it.
32:05It's a hard fight
32:07where timing is going
32:08to come into play
32:09because Porter's eye
32:10was so physical
32:11and he rushes in on you.
32:12He's hard to time.
32:12So, a lot of times
32:13for Berto,
32:14he might be better off
32:15being first with the
32:16jab leading a little
32:18bit.
32:18Porter comfortable
32:19and leading with that
32:21jab there.
32:21Sticks the jab again.
32:24Does a good job of
32:25avoiding the attack
32:26of Berto.
32:27So,
32:28Porter closes out
32:30round to six
32:31with another
32:31effective round
32:33as we head into
32:34the second half
32:35of this welterweight
32:37title elimination belt.
32:38I got that.
32:39Andre Berto went
32:41to the canvas
32:42in the last round
32:43not from a knockdown.
32:44Ironically,
32:45he had just
32:45thrown an uppercut
32:47and landed it.
32:48Look at that
32:49excellent uppercut
32:49but got himself
32:50off balance
32:51and fell down
32:52which was a bad
32:53break for him
32:53because he just
32:54landed a good punch
32:55although Porter
32:55did not look like
32:56he was hurt
32:57by that uppercut.
32:58And some gamesmanship
32:59by Porter there
33:01and we see it again.
33:03The uppercut landed
33:04but Andre Berto
33:05had a few other
33:06balance issues
33:07during that round.
33:07in this case
33:08hit the canvas.
33:09Okay?
33:11You're doing good.
33:12Don't reach for him,
33:13okay?
33:14He's confused.
33:14He can only fight
33:15one way.
33:16That's all he's been doing.
33:17One way.
33:18This fight is yours now.
33:19Being that right.
33:21I'm going to get
33:22the best of you.
33:23Excuse me.
33:24Excuse me.
33:24Excuse me.
33:25Let's go.
33:26Let's go.
33:28Come on.
33:29It's been a grueling
33:31affair as we enter
33:32round at number seven.
33:35The cuts have been
33:36well documented.
33:38And Pauly with both
33:40Berto and Porter
33:42enjoying the inside fighting.
33:45What does it take
33:45to be an effective
33:46inside fighter?
33:48Well, you know,
33:49you want to obviously
33:50be physical.
33:50Oh, good.
33:51Counter right by Berto.
33:53You want to obviously
33:54be physical in there
33:55but in terms of creating
33:57the openings,
33:57you know,
33:58a lot of it is
33:58up to your physical
34:01presence in there,
34:02your ability to step
34:02around and step inside.
34:03You're also using your arms
34:05to create the openings
34:05by shifting the arms
34:07of the other guy
34:07on the inside.
34:08There's a lot of things
34:09involved.
34:09That obviously being
34:09a good body puncher.
34:11You know,
34:11Pauly made the point
34:12that Porter was using
34:13his jab effectively
34:14in the last round.
34:15Born out by the
34:16show stat numbers
34:17that say he landed
34:1810 of 20 jabs
34:19in the last round.
34:20And previously he had been
34:21averaging 4 of 15
34:23in his 7 fights.
34:25So he is,
34:26previous 7 fights,
34:27so he is using
34:29that punch effectively.
34:30One minute has elapsed
34:31in the 7th.
34:33Porter looking to shuffle
34:34trying to discombobulate
34:36Berto who gets blinded
34:38with the jab
34:39and gets stuck
34:39with another jab
34:40right uppercut
34:40on the inside
34:41by Porter
34:41who again peppers
34:42the body
34:43in the clinch.
34:44And one more thing
34:45about that inside fight
34:45when no good
34:46inside fighter
34:47fights totally clean.
34:50When you're on the
34:50inside that much
34:51you figure out
34:52ways to use your elbows,
34:53your headbutts
34:53and all that good stuff.
34:55Spoken like a true boxer.
34:56What was it,
34:56Jesse, the body
34:57but Drew has said
34:58if you're not cheating
34:58and not trying.
35:02A minute and a half
35:03left in the 7th.
35:05It would be like
35:05a pitcher complimenting
35:06hitters in baseball.
35:07You're not going to do it,
35:08are you?
35:14Berto mentions
35:15with the right uppercut
35:16as Porter targets
35:17the head
35:18with those sweeping shots.
35:25Berto?
35:27He's fighting
35:27fought more
35:28at long range
35:29at this moment.
35:30Yeah, at this moment
35:31at least
35:32until Berto
35:33retreats to the ropes
35:34which he hopes he won't.
35:35This has been
35:35a decent round
35:36for Berto.
35:39If he consistently
35:40creates some space
35:41he'll have room
35:43to leverage his shots.
35:44Berto needs a little bit
35:46of space to get
35:46the leverage
35:46on those power shots.
35:47Berto timing Porter
35:49as Porter leaned in
35:51and was caught
35:52with a right hand.
35:53There's the stiff jab
35:54again
35:54delivered by
35:56Showtime's
35:57Sean Porter
35:57coming up
35:58on 30 seconds
35:59left
35:59in the 7th.
36:10Both exchanging
36:11body shots
36:12at close range.
36:14Oh, nice jab
36:26by Porter
36:27and I think
36:29that's Berto's way
36:30of respecting it.
36:31if he can do anything
36:44else he'd be pressing.
36:45Look at the corner.
36:59Look at the corner.
37:00See how the angels
37:02just keep boxing.
37:03Right in the end, okay?
37:05When you're on the back foot
37:07come under your legs
37:08and show him
37:08that quick flip flip jab, okay?
37:11Just flick it and step in, okay?
37:13He ain't seen the hook yet
37:14but it's coming.
37:15You have to get back.
37:17And maintain your focus, alright?
37:22I don't want you
37:24to leave it on the inside right now.
37:31This is round number eight.
37:33Showtime's Sean Porter
37:34in the blue, green, and yellow.
37:36Andre Berto
37:37in the black and white.
37:39What a grueling affair
37:40it has been thus far,
37:41Albert Einstein.
37:42Yeah, I think that last round
37:43was very important
37:44for Andre Berto.
37:45I think personally
37:46he probably won it
37:47and other than round one
37:49it's probably the first round
37:50he's won in this fight
37:51and I think very important
37:54because it may put him
37:55still in the hunt
37:56to even get a decision
37:57in this fight
37:57if he can really close strong
37:59but he's got to win
38:00almost every round.
38:00Good combination by Porter
38:02backing Berto along the ropes
38:03and Porter a bust
38:05to the body
38:06with the left hook
38:07right up a cut on the inside.
38:10That's the thing
38:10about Porter's physical prowess
38:11it'll force mistakes out of you.
38:13You'll be so busy
38:14dealing with this.
38:15Berto trying to hang on
38:16but Porter
38:17is Porter
38:18pummeling the body.
38:20You see you're trying
38:21to deal with the physical prowess
38:22of Porter
38:22that you're not able
38:25to get yourself
38:26in a proper position.
38:27It punches
38:27Porter teeing off
38:30on Andre Berto.
38:31Berto giving a wink
38:32though so he's got it
38:33under control
38:34to see if you can
38:35get back to it.
38:38A barrage of body shots
38:40making that investment
38:42is Sean Porter
38:43here in round number eight.
38:46But Berto
38:46standing, swinging.
38:48Berto seems relaxed in there
38:52but he's being outworked
38:54and that is the thing
38:55with the rounds.
38:56It's going to cost you the rounds.
38:5833 years of age
38:59a two-time welterweight champion
39:02who's been in pitched battles
39:03with the likes of Robert Guerrero
39:05and Victor Ortiz.
39:07Oh, good body shot
39:08by Berto there.
39:09And the overhand right
39:10of Porter
39:10is landing now a lot.
39:13Sean Porter's not a big puncher.
39:14He hasn't knocked out welterweights.
39:16And Porter,
39:17but he can throw
39:18a lot of punches
39:19and land away.
39:20The casualty
39:20of the subjective scoring system
39:22of boxing.
39:23An argument could be made
39:24that Porter could be undefeated
39:26coming into this pivotal fight.
39:30Right uppercut
39:31on the inside
39:32by Berto.
39:33Berto's trying
39:33to look for it.
39:34He's trying to create space
39:35for it.
39:36But Porter doesn't give you
39:37a lot of space in there.
39:40In this round,
39:41look at the show step numbers.
39:43Porter landing
39:4334 of 69 power punches.
39:46And so many of those
39:48are clean body punches.
39:50And Berto,
39:51who trains near
39:52San Francisco, Oakland,
39:54under Virgil Hunter,
39:55there was a power outage
39:56in the city
39:56while he's having
39:57a power outage here
39:58in this round
39:59when it comes to
39:59the power punches.
40:01Although look at him
40:02now going to the body.
40:06Wow.
40:06Old school phone booth fight.
40:11Andre Berto,
40:12showtime Sean Porter.
40:15I barely remember
40:17a round
40:17when someone landed
40:18as many body punches
40:19as Porter is
40:20in this round.
40:21Amazing.
40:24When Berto gets some disney,
40:25he's able to land some shot.
40:26There's a counter-help there.
40:27But you see Porter takes
40:27on the left.
40:28Good pivot by Porter.
40:31Porter takes that space
40:32right away.
40:33Okay, tell me about that round.
40:45Tell me why you did this
40:45so I know.
40:48Sean Porter and Andre Berto,
40:57we won't look at this
40:58in slow motion.
40:59We'll look at it
40:59in real time
41:00to show you
41:01the amount of punches,
41:02the fact that
41:03they were going at it
41:04and Porter for the most part
41:05getting the better
41:06of these exchanges,
41:07ripping body punches
41:09and had shots as well.
41:11But just the pressure
41:12of Sean Porter,
41:14which we've talked about,
41:15pretty remarkable.
41:16And Berto wrote
41:17the try and counter,
41:18just couldn't do it.
41:19Berto rolling in a lot of that,
41:20partially blocking,
41:21but it's also,
41:22it's mentally fatiguing
41:23because you feel like,
41:24yo, this guy's just not
41:25getting it off.
41:26I mean, okay.
41:27Speed.
41:28Something on the other side.
41:29Sean, I'm right here.
41:34Doctor wants to see you.
41:37I hope the doctor's not
41:38billing him each time.
41:39They have battled
41:52through 24 minutes.
41:55Is that all?
41:57Yeah, here we are
41:58in round number nine.
42:01A testament to both
42:02of their conditioning
42:03as well, Pauly,
42:04because Porter anticipated
42:06that Berto would be fading
42:07in this portion of the fight
42:09as he gets caught
42:09with the left hand.
42:10Yeah, absolutely.
42:11And oh, the jab.
42:13Finding its target
42:15for Porter.
42:15Everybody getting work
42:16tonight, the fighters.
42:17Oh, and there goes Berto,
42:18backpedaling.
42:19Backpedaling.
42:22And Porter,
42:24attacking
42:26with a reckless abandon.
42:28Yeah, took a headbutt first.
42:30They're calling it a knockdown
42:31because of the ropes.
42:32Hey, you want to continue?
42:34Walk towards me.
42:35Walk over here.
42:36You want to continue?
42:37Yeah, you want.
42:38Come on.
42:39Here we go.
42:40It's a fast.
42:41Hey, everybody getting
42:42work out tonight.
42:43The fighters, the refs,
42:44the doctors.
42:45And Berto's
42:45and Porter's jab.
42:46And Andre Berto's
42:55visage
42:56beginning to resemble
42:57what we've seen
42:59in prior contests, Al.
43:01Yeah, unfortunately for him,
43:03this has been repeated.
43:05And he's showing
43:06the same gameness
43:07and toughness
43:08as in other fights,
43:09but he is being
43:10dominated right now.
43:11Got tagged
43:11with the left hook.
43:13And Porter continues
43:14to pour on the pressure.
43:16Oh.
43:16Clips him
43:16with the left hook.
43:17Berto up against
43:19the ropes again.
43:20And that's it.
43:21The referee stops the fight
43:22and Showtime
43:23Sean Porter
43:24becomes a mandatory challenger
43:27for Keith Thurman's
43:28WBC title.
43:44And that's the thing
43:55about Porter, man.
43:56He takes the fight
43:56out of you.
43:57Like I said earlier
43:58in the fight,
43:58it's not just a physical thing.
44:00It's a mental thing, too.
44:01He takes the fight
44:02out of you.
44:02He's there, Ken,
44:03sharing a moment together.
44:05Their bond is extremely close
44:07as we pointed out.
44:11We'll be seeing
44:11the doctor again, Mo.
44:12Man, he earned his victory
44:17and his paycheck tonight.
44:19A grueling fight.
44:20As he dispatches,
44:21yeah, the battle-tested
44:22Andre Berto,
44:23who takes defeat
44:25for the fifth time,
44:26but Showtime's
44:27Sean Porter,
44:28he said he wanted
44:29to run it back
44:30with Keith Thurman.
44:31He has now earned
44:32the right to do just that.
44:33Now, as we go back
44:34to the sequence
44:35that would be
44:36the beginning
44:37of the end
44:37of this fight,
44:38there was a clash
44:40of heads,
44:40it appears,
44:41that initially stunned
44:43Andre Berto,
44:43and that's what he was
44:44trying to tell the referee.
44:46Here we see
44:47that's where
44:48the banging
44:49of the heads together
44:50looks like
44:52it really stuns
44:53Andre Berto,
44:54and you can see
44:55that that is
44:55what started his issue.
44:56And let me tell you,
44:57the side of your head
44:58is also thinner
44:58with the skull,
44:59so when you got
45:00butted there,
45:01you're going to feel
45:01that a little bit more.
45:02And so he's in trouble
45:05because of the clash
45:06of heads.
45:07Now, in theory,
45:08right there,
45:09he could have gotten
45:09a moment to recover,
45:11but the referee
45:11didn't see it
45:12as a clash of heads.
45:14Then later on,
45:15it would rain punches
45:16from Sean Porter,
45:18throwing the uppercut
45:20and the right hand,
45:21not everything
45:21getting in there there,
45:22but then the left hook,
45:23and he's just teeing off
45:25on Berto,
45:26who's in some trouble,
45:27and that was the left hook
45:28that sent him
45:29against the ropes
45:30and created a knockdown.
45:35And then the end
45:36of the fight,
45:36as we take a look
45:37from a couple
45:38of different angles,
45:39Porter cranking up
45:40those left hooks.
45:41Porter has a pretty
45:41good left hook.
45:42We talk about
45:43his overhand right,
45:44but his left hook
45:45is also a very good punch.
45:47Keep continuing
45:48to throw it,
45:49keeping up the pressure
45:50against Andre Berto,
45:52and ultimately,
45:53that's when Mark Nelson
45:54would step in
45:54and say,
45:55we've seen enough
45:56and Andre Berto
45:57not really complaining
45:58that much about it.
45:59He'd been under pressure
46:00in this fight consistently,
46:02and one more look
46:03at Apale
46:04as we see Porter
46:05continuing with
46:05those left hooks.
46:06Yeah, blood-filled face
46:08of Sean Porter.
46:09He's a mind
46:10continuing to work.
46:13He never stops.
46:13He never stops throwing.
46:15He never stops
46:15pressuring fighters,
46:16and this is the result.
46:18And if you're going
46:19to face Sean Porter
46:20in the ring,
46:20this is what you're
46:21going to see.
46:21Yep.
46:23And he'll physically
46:24beat you down,
46:24but mentally,
46:25he'll start to make
46:26you doubt yourself.
46:27And like I said,
46:27when you've been
46:27through so many tough fights
46:28like Berto has,
46:29it's a subtle thing,
46:31but you still have
46:32to tell yourself,
46:32man, what am I doing here?
46:34You know what I mean?
46:34This is just
46:35not the kind of fight
46:36I want to be in.
46:39So a huge victory
46:41for Showtime.
46:42Sean Porter,
46:42let's make it official
46:43with Jimmy Lennon Jr.
46:45Ladies and gentlemen,
46:53we have the time of
46:54one minute,
46:5531 seconds
46:56in round number nine.
46:59A referee in charge,
47:00Mark Nelson,
47:00stops the contest.
47:02He is the winner
47:02by way of technical knockout.
47:05He is the winner
47:06of the WBC Welterweight
47:07World Title Eliminator,
47:09Showtime,
47:12Sean Porter.
47:19So the boxing guards
47:21are smiling down
47:22on Showtime,
47:22Sean Porter,
47:23as he has earned
47:24the right to rematch
47:25Keith Thurman
47:25based on this performance.
47:27Sean Porter averages
47:28landing about 40%
47:29of his power punches
47:31according to show stats,
47:32and tonight he landed
47:3242%,
47:34and many of those
47:36were thunderous body shots,
47:37but plenty to the head
47:38as well.
47:41All right,
47:41let's go up to Jim Gray
47:42who's standing by
47:43with Showtime's
47:44Sean Porter.
47:46All right,
47:46Mauro,
47:46thank you very much.
47:47Sean,
47:48this was a brutal fight
47:49with a lot of head clashes,
47:51a lot of cuts.
47:52How would you describe this?
47:53Oh, man,
47:54I got to clean up
47:54those head butts.
47:55Honestly,
47:56that's something
47:56we've been saying
47:57since our turn pro.
47:58We don't want to
47:58come straight in.
47:59We try to, you know,
48:00use the whole ring,
48:01work on angles,
48:01things of that nature,
48:02but, you know,
48:03sometimes in the heat
48:04of the battle,
48:05I'm a fighter,
48:06and Mr. Berto
48:07was a fighter as well,
48:08so those head clashes
48:10was nothing but us
48:11fighting,
48:12going at it,
48:12and doing the best
48:13we could to win,
48:14and God bless.
48:15I came on the right side
48:16of it.
48:17Has your head,
48:18because of those clashes,
48:19become somewhat
48:20of a weapon for you
48:20and set up
48:21some of your other punches?
48:22Not at all.
48:23Not at all.
48:23Honestly,
48:24in this fight,
48:24yes,
48:25it was.
48:25Those were not
48:26my intentions at all.
48:27A public apology
48:28to Andre Berto.
48:30I played a part
48:31in those head butts
48:31as well,
48:32but my intention
48:33is never to use
48:34my head as a weapon.
48:36It's always to move
48:37out of the way
48:38of his punches
48:38and try to counter,
48:39so, you know,
48:41this was just a very
48:42hard-fought battle
48:43by both of us,
48:44and I'm just blessed
48:45to have a victory.
48:46How do you maintain
48:47this onslaught
48:48for every round,
48:49every second?
48:50We do it, man.
48:51We come back
48:51to the corner,
48:52and we're already
48:53working on our recovery
48:54on the way back
48:55to the corner.
48:56We work extremely hard.
48:58Take a look at our story
48:59if y'all can.
49:00We do some amazing things
49:01in the training camp,
49:02and our training camp,
49:03the preparation is long,
49:05it's hard,
49:06and as y'all can see,
49:06it's always worth it.
49:08Stand by here
49:09just a moment.
49:10We're going to talk
49:10about what you want
49:11to do next
49:11in your mandatory.
49:12Andre, how are you?
49:13There was just
49:14an awful lot of action
49:15and head butts,
49:16and it was hard
49:16for you to get
49:17any type of balance
49:19because of it,
49:19wasn't it?
49:20Yeah, man.
49:20It was, like I said,
49:22you know, Sean,
49:23I got to give him credit,
49:24of course,
49:25but like I said, man,
49:26it was, it was,
49:28and he's a rough fighter.
49:29You know what I mean?
49:30That's him,
49:30and, yeah,
49:31I mean,
49:32he has great skills,
49:33but at the same time,
49:34he's going to,
49:35you know,
49:35he's going to be rough
49:36and try to handle you
49:37when he can,
49:38so, you know,
49:39I got a lot of,
49:40you know,
49:41head butts.
49:41He did, too,
49:42but shit is just,
49:44you know,
49:45it's crazy.
49:46Do you accept the apology?
49:47Do you accept his apology
49:49and he just publicly
49:49apologized to you?
49:50Oh, did he?
49:51What'd he say?
49:53Listen,
49:54listening to him
49:55talk right now,
49:55I got to say this.
49:57I'm shaking my head
49:58and it's only for one reason.
49:59It's those the head butts.
50:01We try to come in
50:02and we try to fight flawless
50:03every fight,
50:04and outside of the head butts,
50:05this was really,
50:06our game plan was worked out
50:07very well,
50:08and I can only shake my head
50:09about the head butts.
50:10It's very unfortunate,
50:11and yes,
50:12I am sorry about it.
50:13It's all good.
50:14It is what it is,
50:15but like I said,
50:16man,
50:17you know,
50:18Sean's a tough competitor,
50:19you know,
50:19him and his father,
50:20you know,
50:20they came in here,
50:21I guess,
50:21I mean,
50:22we had a very,
50:22you know,
50:23good competitive fight
50:24until,
50:25you know,
50:26the head butts
50:27got a little bit,
50:27a little bit,
50:28you know,
50:29too much for me,
50:30you know,
50:30started shaking me up
50:31a little bit,
50:32but I think it was,
50:33you know,
50:33a really good fight
50:34before all that.
50:35And you want to continue
50:36now in boxing
50:37or how you evaluate
50:39things going forward?
50:40Yeah,
50:40right now,
50:40man,
50:40I just,
50:41because I had a long
50:42training camp,
50:43man,
50:43I want to spend time
50:43with the family,
50:44and I just want to relax
50:46and,
50:47you know,
50:47really started to enjoy
50:49the fruits of my labor.
50:50Andre,
50:51appreciate it.
50:51All right.
50:53Sean,
50:53you now become
50:54mandatory challenger
50:55for Keith Thurman
50:57who has the belt
50:58right here.
50:59You guys fought one time,
51:01you know,
51:02had the judges possibly
51:03seen it a different way?
51:04You might have been victorious.
51:05Will you give him
51:06a rematch now?
51:07It's your mandatory.
51:08He is my mandatory,
51:10you know,
51:10his team,
51:11they were adamant
51:12about getting the rematch
51:13and now they fought
51:15themselves in position
51:16for the rematch.
51:17They truly deserve it.
51:18It's nothing but
51:18sitting down,
51:19talking to Al Heyman
51:20and making the fight happen,
51:21man.
51:21Would that be your choice
51:22and would that be
51:23what you would instruct
51:24Al Heyman
51:24if that's possible?
51:26You know,
51:26I'm still not thinking
51:27about anything right now
51:28per se,
51:30but outside of that,
51:31this is a great fight.
51:32It's a great matchup.
51:33We had a fight of the year
51:34last year.
51:35We can have a fight
51:35of the year later
51:36on this year.
51:37He's hungry.
51:38You see the way he fights.
51:39It's going to be
51:39a great fight.
51:40You'll have a lot of attention
51:41on Spence and Brooke
51:42coming up in England.
51:43In May,
51:44how do you see that fight
51:45and is that another possibility
51:47should you decide
51:47not to go right
51:48to the rematch?
51:50At the end of the day,
51:51you know,
51:51I wear red,
51:52white,
51:52and blue,
51:52so I look forward
51:53to Spence bringing
51:54that belt back home
51:55and creating more
51:56opportunities for the
51:57Walter Wade division,
51:58man.
51:58Your boy Keith
51:59one-time Thurman's
52:00at the top
52:00and I'm willing
52:01to fight everybody.
52:02How do you force him
52:03into the fight
52:03now that you have
52:04the mandatory?
52:05Man,
52:05I was just up here
52:05wishing he was going
52:06to say yes.
52:07That's the fight
52:08I want next.
52:08He kind of did.
52:09He kind of did.
52:10He said a whole bunch
52:11of words.
52:12I didn't understand him.
52:13All I know is yes.
52:16Negotiate, baby.
52:16All we got to do
52:17is negotiate.
52:17All I know is yes.
52:19Hey,
52:19but hey,
52:20congratulations
52:20on your last fight
52:21and hopefully
52:22I'll see you soon.
52:23Brooklyn,
52:24that's what y'all want.
52:26We may have a date.
52:28All right.
52:28And I can guarantee you
52:29everybody at their house
52:30is screaming at the TV
52:31that's what they want to.
52:33God bless you
52:33and I'll see you soon.
52:35Congratulations, Sean.
52:35Thank you very much.
52:36All right.
52:37We may have a date.
52:38Mauro,
52:38back to you.
52:39All right.
52:40Thank you very much,
52:41Jim.
52:42The fight was at times
52:44ugly,
52:44but man,
52:45what two classy
52:46ambassadors of the sport.
52:48We've said it before,
52:49but man,
52:51Sean Porter,
52:51again,
52:52going to Andre Berto
52:52and apologizing.
52:54Yeah,
52:54and I think,
52:55you know,
52:55he would have preferred
52:57those clashes of heads
52:58not to happen,
52:59but he was aggressive.
53:01He was effective
53:02with body punches
53:03and punches to the head
53:04as well.
53:05Berto could not
53:06keep him off
53:07and at the end of the day,
53:07it was a quintessential
53:09Sean Porter performance,
53:10a fight that went
53:11for the most part
53:12to form
53:13with Porter winning
53:15near the end
53:15of the fight.
53:16All right,
53:16let's go and take a look
53:18at the scores,
53:19the official scores
53:20at the time
53:20of the stoppage.
53:22Here's how the three judges
53:23in Brooklyn
53:24saw the fight,
53:25all three in favor
53:26of Showtime,
53:27Sean Porter.
53:28As we bring in
53:30our unofficial
53:30Showtime scorer,
53:31Steve Farhood,
53:32I expect you to have
53:33it similar,
53:34my man.
53:35Yes,
53:35Mo indeed,
53:3678-73,
53:37same as Don Ackerman.
53:38Looking at the scores,
53:39there was the round,
53:41the fourth round
53:41and the seventh round
53:42were the only rounds
53:43where Berto won
53:44on two of the three cards.
53:46And the eighth round,
53:48Robin Taylor's card,
53:49she scored that round
53:5010-8 without a knockdown.
53:51That gives you an idea
53:52of Porter's dominance.
53:53Next time for Porter,
53:56I understand there will be
53:57a special promotion here,
53:58it'll be helmet night.
54:02Showtime,
54:03Sean Porter now
54:04gets a chance to,
54:05well,
54:06claim a prize.
54:06He's always wanted
54:07that WBC green belt
54:10and for Andre Berto,
54:12well,
54:12the future up in the air,
54:13Al.
54:14Yeah,
54:15we'll see it.
54:15He said he's going to
54:16re-examine it
54:17and we'll see how he goes,
54:19but this may be
54:20the last time we've seen him.
54:21If it is the last time
54:22we see Andre Berto,
54:23a great warrior in the ring.
54:25Absolutely.
54:25All right,
54:25let's go back to Brian Custer.
54:29All right,
54:29Mo,
54:29thank you very much.
54:30We take another look
54:31at their showtime.
54:32Sean Porter,
54:33you know,
54:33he just physically
54:34mauls you in the ring.
54:36He said the statement
54:37he wanted to make here tonight
54:38is that I'm here,
54:39welterweight division,
54:41and you're next
54:42in reference
54:43to Keith one-time Thurman.
54:47Let's review the action
54:48from tonight.

54:50making the first title
54:51defense of this WBC
54:53super welterweight title.
54:54Hey,
54:55he dropped Charles Hatley
54:56in the third round
54:57with that right hand,
54:58and then the end
55:01came in the sixth round
55:02with the knockout.
55:04Just a devastating punch
55:06there by Jermell Charlo.
55:08He remained
55:10the WBC super welterweight champion.
55:13The main event,
55:14WBC welterweight title eliminator,
55:17Andre Berto,
55:17Sean Porter.
55:18Roberto got dropped
55:20in the second round,
55:21and this was really a fight,
55:25a number of headbutts
55:27and clashes,
55:28things of that nature,
55:29but then Sean Porter
55:30poured it on
55:31in that ninth round.
55:33Body shots,
55:34and he gets the stoppage
55:36in the ninth round,
55:38and Sean Porter
55:40walks away
55:41with the victory.
55:42He's now next in line
55:45for the WBC welterweight title shot
