00:00When they come up and told us what happened, that they found my mother dead, I didn't really
00:10know what to feel. I was just numb. I thought surely not. Ashley would never do this. You're
00:23going grandmother. That wouldn't give you anything in the world. Why would you want
00:29to hurt her? Pure evil. This Ashley is evil.
00:59I am a person that believes in good and evil. I do believe she was evil then. It's all
01:11evil. It's all darkness. I would really honestly want to know why. What did grandma do that was
01:18so horrible that you felt like you had to kill her? They just kept slicing and slicing.
01:28I mean, every part of her body. I tried to stop my mom from slicing my grandmother. To this
01:37day, I'm still affected by it. I want to know the truth of why they really did it.
01:48God told me to speak up. I prayed about talking to you. Jesus told me to tell the truth.
02:05you remember stabbing her? Yes. She was in the bed and I woke her up. I swung the knife
02:25like this. And he cut her right there.
02:32God told me to speak up. I didn't do something. She was in the bed.
02:34I pulled her right there. And I gave her. That was what I was going to be like.
02:37I did not know the truth of the boat. I was going to kill you. So I'm going to tell it
02:39the truth of you. I said gastric. It was so scary. But, yes. I've got to the small
02:42cabin. Good at the next stage. I'm going to tell you, Daniel. Don't come back.
02:44You're bored. Oh, man, for the next day. You're stuck at the next day. But, yes. I love
02:45you. You're stuck at the next day. You're off the next day. I'm going to
02:48home on Monday! You're able to keepuso. Thank you, Daniel. You're
02:53I remember this, Ashley and Casey sitting on the back of my truck at the trailer house
03:23a lake-walking pillow, go there for the weekend.
03:29Casey always hung around the trailer.
03:33Ashley wanted to be in the boat.
03:36She wanted to be the fishing buddy.
03:40I had a great time there.
03:44What kind of big sister was Ashley?
03:46Didn't matter if Casey could handle herself or not.
03:49If Ashley was there, Ashley was going to take care of it.
03:54That was the sister she was.
03:58Ashley will always protect Casey.
04:02Ashley was a blessing to us after I buried her first daughter.
04:07And Ashley come along.
04:09I knew God blessed us with a healthy child.
04:14I had a shop.
04:16We'd go out there and we'd build something.
04:17We'd do stuff together all the time.
04:20She always wanted to be with Dad.
04:22We had a special bond.
04:25I miss those days.
04:26And this is the Ashley I knew.
04:50This was the loving, caring Ashley.
04:58We had fun.
04:59Of course, you know we got into trouble.
05:01But we always had fun when we were together.
05:04We were all really close.
05:06We had family dinners at Grandma's.
05:13We went to church every Sunday and Wednesday.
05:18Ashley was in church and doing really good, serving the Lord.
05:24We had a pretty good relationship at this point.
05:28And she just kind of spiraled.
05:30I remember Ashley calling me, needing someone to come and pick her up.
05:42She had just gotten into a fight.
05:45And I said, okay, I'll be there in a minute.
05:49I knew she had a temper.
05:51I knew she had anger issues.
05:54But I have never seen that side of her.
05:56When I got there, Ashley had told me there was a woman she had been fighting with.
06:05Ashley disarmed her and beat her up with her fist.
06:09Beat her so badly that it put her in the hospital.
06:13Had the cameras on the bank not caught it, Ashley would have went to prison for attempted murder.
06:19Because they would have swore she had a weapon.
06:22But I was very shocked.
06:24I was very, very confused.
06:25She was like, you disarmed her.
06:27Why would you continue to beat somebody so badly to put them in the hospital?
06:33And I remember Ashley telling me that she didn't black out when she did this.
06:39She clearly stated she remembered everything she did to her.
06:44She was in control.
06:45I remember the day Ashley calling me and telling me she was pregnant.
07:03And I was excited.
07:06I know she was young and I was young.
07:09But I thought maybe, just maybe, she would straighten up and stay out of trouble and try to do right.
07:19But for the first couple of months, Ashley was a good mom.
07:25That only lasted a couple of months.
07:31Ashley and her boyfriend got caught smoking marijuana with the baby in the car.
07:36And to my understanding, they had a lot of marijuana in the car.
07:42I remember Ashley walking in, carrying Jeremiah in his car seat.
07:49I thought that was odd.
07:50I said, what are you doing?
07:52And I looked out the window and there was cops out there.
07:55I said, Ashley, what's going on?
07:56She said, I can't talk right now.
07:59Just light a cigarette so I can hit it.
08:01I'm going to jail.
08:01I remember one day, I went to Ashley's house.
08:21And we were just sitting there talking.
08:24And Jeremiah and his younger brother had got into an argument.
08:29And I remember Ashley just flipping out and attacking Jeremiah.
08:36I mean, just slapping him everywhere.
08:39Jeremiah was covering his head, crying, screaming, and asking her to stop.
08:46I said, Ashley, stop.
08:47What the hell are you doing?
08:49But she kept going.
08:52She wouldn't listen.
08:55I was shocked that Ashley was in such a dark place.
08:59There was nothing I could do.
09:03You know, he's not my kid.
09:04And it would just make matters worse for him.
09:09I was hurt.
09:10I was angry that she would do that to her child.
09:14Actually, I couldn't afford to keep paying her bills.
09:33Looked out the front window.
09:37There she was.
09:39Her and her three boys living in the car.
09:42She liked using these kids as a pawn to get what she wanted.
09:48It doesn't nerve me.
09:50But what does a parent do?
09:53When you see your kid, your grandkids living in the car,
09:58then you're not going to know where they're at.
10:00Our two kids are safe.
10:03She had to move in with us.
10:10May 18th, I got a phone call at work.
10:16Dad, the house was on fire.
10:18As I was driving, I'm thinking, Lord, don't let it be bad.
10:26My heart was breaking.
10:30Because the closer I got, I could see more and more smoke.
10:35I get there and I see the devastation.
10:37Everything I've worked all my life for is gone.
10:40I couldn't believe it.
10:41Everything in the house was pretty much ruined from the heat, the smoke.
10:48God, can this get any worse?
10:52Ashley was there.
10:54I don't really think it affected her at all.
10:57I've seen no concern in her eyes about it.
11:00I thought, why?
11:02Why lose everything and try to start all over?
11:05With a daughter that doesn't really care even to start with.
11:11I just believed the fire was set.
11:15Alan, who do you believe set the fire?
11:18Ashley.
11:19Ashley.
11:30At the time, I was in my bedroom, and I was in there sleeping before the fire started,
11:54and it was me and my brother, and he wakes me up because he smells smoke.
11:58And when he opens up the door, like, the smoke goes everywhere.
12:05We tried to hurry up and get out, and then I realized that my little brother was in there,
12:09and my mom and her boyfriend were out in the car.
12:12So I had to run back in because my mom was scared to go back in to go save my little brother.
12:18She acted as if she really didn't care that the house just burned down.
12:23A dog died in that fire, a cat died in that fire, and they were laughing about it.
12:29The fact that she didn't even want to go back in to go help my little brother that was still in there,
12:34that just goes to show what I'm talking about.
12:37She's selfish.
12:39She only cares about herself.
12:40I see no concern in Ashley's eyes the day of the fire.
13:03Other than she don't have a place to stay there now.
13:10Nobody does.
13:14The kids, they was devastated.
13:16Ashley's boys was.
13:18Because they knew no place to stay.
13:23And I looked at Ashley, I said,
13:24you may not think it was a home, but it was mine.
13:27My first impression of Rayshawn,
13:46I know he had a criminal record.
13:49I don't know what about, but I know it was pretty long list.
13:52Rayshawn and my great-grandmother,
13:56when they would argue,
13:58he would tend to threaten to hit her and shove her and all kinds of stuff,
14:02and she would threaten to call the police out of fear.
14:06I remember a conversation that grandma and I had had.
14:16She told me, my sister had told my mom,
14:22I wonder what it's like to just stab somebody.
14:26And I said, grandma, don't you think we should tell dad?
14:30And grandma said, no, I don't think Ashley meant anything by that.
14:34And so I kept it to myself.
14:39If I could go back and tell him what she said,
14:45maybe things would be different.
14:48Maybe she'd still be here.
14:52August 3rd, Monday morning,
15:05woke up to get ready for work, as usual.
15:08First thing I always do is call my mother in the morning
15:11and make sure she's okay.
15:12I called,
15:14wasn't no answer.
15:15I called again.
15:21Still no response.
15:22Something wasn't right.
15:27When I pull up
15:28to my mother's house,
15:31her car was gone.
15:36When I walked through the front door,
15:38I looked to my right.
15:41There was blood on the outside of my mom's bedroom door.
15:44When I opened my mother's bedroom door,
15:51blood everywhere.
15:56Put her bed all the way to the dress.
15:59I started hollering what happened.
16:03I hollered Jeremiah.
16:05I'm running in there.
16:06I said,
16:09boy, what happened?
16:11Where's mom at?
16:13She hurt bad.
16:15What happened?
16:17She was scared to death.
16:20I called the cop.
16:22I said,
16:22something's happened to somebody
16:24and I'm afraid it's my mother.
16:27We're standing there.
16:28I called Casey.
16:30I said,
16:30something's happened.
16:31You need to get here.
16:31You need to get here.
16:44Police officer,
16:45I've known a long time,
16:45walked up to me and said,

17:40in my bedroom
17:40and I heard screaming
17:41from the other room.
17:42Dead.
17:44Dead.
17:44Dead.
17:45Dead.
17:46my mom and my grandmother at the door so i thought they were fighting so i went to go split it up
17:50i had no time to process anything it happened all so quick i felt like blood all over me
17:58and i see my grandmother on her knees crawling begging me for help they just kept slicing and
18:04slicing i mean every part of her body i would try to stop my mom from slicing my grandmother
18:10but when i would have a hold of her ray sean would run up and start slicing her necks
18:18she didn't stop she just kept going he kept going it was just pure torture
18:28when she was just laying there ray sean drew i guess like a pentagram and he said it was a satanic
18:37sacrifice and they were started to mumbling all this mumbo jumbo and they took the screwdriver
18:45and they driven it straight into her heart
18:52ray sean walked up to me and he put his hands on my shoulder and he made me and my little brother
18:56roll the body up and the carpet carry her down the stairs and put her in the car
19:01my mom kind of pulled me over to her after it was all done and she was telling me that she did it
19:08for me which was really confusing to me so to this day i don't know what she's talking about
19:15last thing i said to ashley was the impact statement
19:31have not had any contact since when i looked her in the eye wasn't nothing there
19:38i asked for the death penalty on both because i was angry
19:56jeremiah said don't do that
20:08don't want to know
20:17when she's gonna die
20:23okay
20:32it would be nice to have some answers your grown grandmother
20:43that opened her home up to you and your sons
20:50that would give you anything in the world
20:55why would you want to hurt her
20:56i would love to hear what she has to say
21:10you remember stabbing her yes
21:32she was begging me to stop she was screaming for help and nobody
21:36helped but jeremiah tried to help please have said that there was a joker smile cut into her face
21:42and you want me to tell you how that one initially came yes that was the first
21:47swing of a knife when she was in the bed and i woke her up i swung the knife like this and it
21:53cut her right there
22:06i've been wanting to tell the story ever since it happened
22:23my co-defendant had threatened me and said if i ever tell anybody that he would kill my children
22:31so i kept it in but i've been feeling like god has nudged me to tell my side of the story
22:38i don't personally want to talk to you jesus told me to tell the truth i'm nervous with all these
22:47things around me i've never had a visit before and this is my first visit is with you know a tv
22:54my dad had a house fire and i was going to live with my grandma until he got his house fixed
23:16and she uh offered to let ray sean stay with her as well he was kind of like my boyfriend
23:24i started moving this stuff in and i stumbled across a paper the paper seemed weird and it has
23:31something like i would describe a pledge of allegiance you're like swearing yourself to
23:36something bigger than you are i decided to ask ray sean i'm like i found this weird paper what do you
23:43think about this paper and his whole face changed he looked at me and he had looked at me this way
23:51before and it's when he is going to be violent i felt like that's what was about to happen and then
23:57he crumbled the paper and he threw it to the side he said this is not supposed to be read by civilian
24:03eyes and it's not supposed to be in civilian hands that everybody in this house has to die
24:08because of this paper and i'm panicking i don't know what to do when the kids go to sleep he grabbed
24:15some knives out of my car he grabbed one and he handed me one he said now you're going to cut her
24:21throat while she sleeps i walk in there with him i tap her shoulder she wakes up i'm panicking and i just
24:29start swinging the knife okay she's screaming you know because there's a whole quarrel going on now
24:36and jeremiah wakes up and he runs to the bedroom
24:46and he sees this attack going on and he starts screaming mom what are you doing and he throws me
24:51to the floor he said why what are you doing stop stop i said i'm doing it for you get off of me
24:57and then here she comes and she starts grabbing the knife and then i scream and ray shatter flams her
25:03to the floor and he's stabbing her and hitting her and then he holds her and he looks at me and he says
25:09finish it because you know if you know what happens and then i cut her throat and you know you know i mean
25:26so you couldn't stop at any point i couldn't stop it no
25:30i wasn't in control if i'm in control then i could have stopped
25:36i would i made a decision under the influence of fear
25:41do you believe your kids believe that yeah i do
25:51one of the things in talking to your dad that was such a crucial
25:54need for him to know was why you would hurt the person that was helping you the most
26:03what would you tell him i remember thinking that if i don't do it he is going to hurt them and that's
26:10all i could think is he's going to hurt them what what would you do if you're a mother placed in that
26:17situation i don't know what i should have done
26:22i just did what he was telling me i had to do so kill your children or you kill your grandmother he
26:27said he was going to kill everybody in the house or i could kill her that was my choices
26:35that's what he said this is what he is saying and this piece of paper is a mystery to me i mean i've
26:42heard about gangs and you know you know things like this happen but he said this was for his it's
26:48a part of his gang and that people that is not in it that's what he called civilians is not allowed
26:54i was thinking protect my children i'm still in fear telling you right now that something's going
27:00to happen to my children ashley you say you did this to protect your kids why why do you think people
27:08should believe that i'm not asking anyone to believe me that's the truth i i'm not asking for
27:16anything this is the hardest thing for me to have to do is sit here and tell you all this
27:20i feel like i'm not protecting them my kids told me they want me to tell
27:24the help she asked me she was begging me to stop she was screaming for help and nobody
27:40helped but jeremiah tried to help and right sean threw him off and
27:44it was so terrible i remember thinking that if i don't do it he is going to hurt them he said he
27:52was going to kill everybody in the house or i could kill her that was my choices
28:01i honestly don't know how much of that was true honestly that all this is happening that she was
28:07forced to either kill our grandmother or you know all of us were going to die because my mom has never
28:12been scared of anybody i think she's trying to use us as an alibi to get free because none of this
28:19was ever said she never even spoke up in court why didn't you if this all this is true why didn't you
28:24speak up about it in court when you knew he was arrested i mean it's it upsets me it's never the same
28:34story so is it that she was mean to you while you did it or was it because ray sean made you
28:39you and the way i see it is if you lie to me one time you've lied to me a hundred more times
28:55ashley you say you did this to protect your kids why why do you think people should believe
29:02that i mean i'm not asking you to believe me i'm not asking anyone to believe me that's the truth
29:10i i'm not asking for anything this is the hardest thing for me to have to do is sit here and tell
29:15you all this knowing what he told me
29:20i feel like i'm not protecting them my kids told me they want me to tell
29:23well that last part was true honestly we have told her that we wanted to tell the truth
29:31several times since it's happened and we we told her we just want the truth but deep inside of me i want
29:39to believe my mom so bad i really do and it's just so hard to believe anything that's coming out of her
29:48mouth because she ain't just lied to me now she just lied to me my entire life how could you do
29:55this to me and then lie to me to my face like i i mean how do you expect someone especially me who
30:01was there to believe you but is it too late to come to me and just finally admit what you did that you
30:10was wrong for what you did and don't blame nobody else like i don't want to blame her her her
30:16ex-boyfriend or my grandma i want to take full responsibility it's never too late for that and
30:22you know that would actually probably mean a lot to me and my brothers
30:30what do you make of her her her crying her tears i don't know she's cried countless times i mean
30:38that's usually what she goes to when she's in trouble or she cries
30:46it was always an excuse and she would just cry if nobody believed her or she would cry if someone
30:52called her a liar that's kind of almost like the boy who cried wolf like you can only cry so many
30:57times until people stop believing you what about your grandfather do you think she owes him the truth
31:04oh he she owes him the truth more than she owes anybody the truth and in my opinion
31:11i feel like my grandpa deserves it more than anybody
31:20what is the responsibility that you take well i take responsibility that i actually did it yeah
31:26to protect my children yes i did one of the things in talking to your dad that was such a crucial
31:33need for him to know was why why would you hurt him i didn't want to hurt my dad i didn't want to hurt
31:40my grandma i didn't want my children hurt either but when faced with the decision of you have to pick
31:47what were you going to do well that is what i did i have to own responsibility that is what i did
31:53i didn't say it was right i didn't say it was wrong well you know what you did was wrong obviously what
31:59i did was wrong right i'm in prison yeah she wasn't worried about me
32:10i don't believe none that it wasn't about protecting them it's about how much pain she could inflict
32:17are you satisfied with her answer she's talking to you no
32:29i don't believe it ashley's pretty good about putting on the front
32:36i haven't seen anything yet that would convince me otherwise
32:41i wish i could believe her
32:47but i don't
32:55so whenever you're ready jeremiah
32:59please have said that there was a joker smile cut into her face and you want me to tell you how
33:04that one initially came yes that was the first swing of a knife when she was in the bed and i woke her up
33:11i swung the knife like this and it cut her right there
33:19so there's actually more to that story than what she told
33:23and like i don't know that was just messed up but they had her by the back of her head like this by
33:28her hair and they were carving the smile into her face i do think she took pleasure in what she did
33:35because if not why would any of that happen
33:46why don't we play the first clip
33:53god told me to speak up i prayed about talking to you i
33:56i don't personally want to talk to you jesus told me to tell the truth tell what happened
34:05he said tell the truth and what comes from here i don't know
34:09there's fear not what men can do to me but trust in the one who can kill my soul and my body which is
34:18jesus christ my savior
34:27she's always believed in god
34:32she's turned her back
34:38sin will take you a lot farther than you ever want to stay to begin with
34:42but that's what happens when you visit sin
34:48i pray and hope that she is sincere
35:01if you could tell them say something directly to them what would you say
35:07i'm sorry i'm sorry i love you and i wish things were different
35:18i wish i could fix it
35:25but i can't
35:39she's right
35:40she's right she can't fix it
35:50she broke it
35:53she can't fix it is she trying to show remorse because the camera's there
35:58because yeah she was the daddy's girl
