Another warm and sunny day, with some patchy clouds during the morning and chance of some showers and rumbles of thunder pushing into southwest England and then to the Midlands, northwest England and parts of Wales. Temperatures can reach higher values than the last few days across eastern parts of the country. - This is the Met Office UK Weather forecast for the morning of 21/06/2025. Bringing you today’s weather forecast is Aidan McGivern.
00:00Hello, good morning. It's a sultry start for many of us this weekend and it's going to be a very hot one in places through this afternoon.
00:08Of course, all that heat as it increases through the day leads to a lot of energy in the atmosphere.
00:14And then as fresher air arrives at higher levels in the atmosphere, there's the risk of instability being released and some very severe thunderstorms by the end of the day.
00:23Speaking of which, there will be some patchy cloud during the morning and always the chance of some showers or even some rumbles of thunder pushing into southwest England and then to the Midlands, northwest England, parts of Wales.
00:33But these will move through quickly. There will be some medium level cloud. It's not going to be completely blue skies everywhere, worth noting.
00:40However, where we do get that very strong sunshine, summer solstice, of course, so it's peaking at this time of year,
00:46then we're likely to see temperatures reach even higher values than the last few days across eastern parts of the UK.
00:52So we're talking about widely 31, 32 Celsius, the possibility of 33 or 34 Celsius if we get enough sunshine.
00:59But of course, we do have some cloud drifting in from the west at times, a few spots of rain, rumbles of thunder, as I mentioned.
01:04Now, in the west, you'll note that the temperatures are lower compared with the last couple of days, but humidities are still high.
01:11So I suspect it will still feel fairly oppressive and we're still getting temperatures into the mid or even high 20s across parts of Scotland,
01:17particularly towards the east of Scotland, Murray Coast and southeast Scotland around Edinburgh.
01:21But as I say, all that heat building up and with the cooler air coming in on a different wind direction at higher levels,
01:29that means that all the ingredients are in place for some very significant thunderstorms to develop by the end of the day.
01:38And there's one area in particular that we are concerned about in terms of thunderstorm development.
01:43And we've issued this yellow thunderstorm warning, parts of northern England, north Midlands, northeast Wales.
01:49This is the zone where there's the highest risk of impacts from things like large hail, two to four centimetres, torrential rain, frequent lightning, gusty winds.
01:58So that's where the greatest risk of impacts from those factors is as we go through Saturday evening and overnight.
02:07But that doesn't rule out the risk of thunderstorms elsewhere.
02:10There could be some other thunderstorms coming along.
02:12And in fact, there is another area, western Scotland in particular, where an area of very heavy rain moves through later in the evening and overnight.
02:1920 to 30, perhaps more millimetres of rain and some thunder and lightning.
02:24So, a lively night. The heaviest showers and thunderstorms drift away.
02:30But it's another warm night for sleeping, particularly towards the east and southeast, a little bit more comfortable towards the west.
02:35We are seeing fresher air move in, but it's still going to stay relatively humid across the UK on Sunday.
02:42The fresher transition comes in two stages.
02:45We still see temperatures in the mid to high 20s in the east of England, but more like the high teens, low 20s elsewhere.
02:51Monday will feel fresher again. That's the second stage.
02:54And then we're into the cool, changeable westerly airflow that we'll experience that much of next week.
