Tyler Forness discusses the NFL's recent release of the Quarter Century Team roster, and while four Vikings players made the cut one of Minnesota's biggest legends, Adrian Peterson, was snubbed of the honor
Transcript
00:00The NFL dropped their quarter-century team, and they forgot which Minnesota Viking?
00:04The answer will piss you off.
00:09The Minnesota Vikings were well-represented on the quarter-century team.
00:13They had multiple players.
00:14Randy Moss and Justin Jefferson, a wide receiver.
00:16Yeah, the Vikings had two of them.
00:18Pretty dang cool.
00:19They also had Steve Hutchinson at left guard.
00:22Jared Allen at edge rusher.
00:24Four players made that final 53-man roster, which is pretty good.
00:28They also had two players on what they called the practice squad, because they were building
00:32a full roster.
00:34That was Kevin Williams and Cordero Patterson.
00:37Now, when you hear that list of names, they all make sense.
00:40And even Cordero Patterson, because it was that returner.
00:42And being behind Devin Hester is no slouch.
00:45But there's one player that they were missing that they didn't even include.
00:49And that's Adrian Peterson.
00:51You look at the running backs.
00:52Okay, Derrick Henry makes sense.
00:54Got four all pros, a 2,000-yard season.
00:57He's been incredible.
00:58And he's been consistent and getting better as he ages, something that running backs just
01:02don't do anymore.
01:03Then you have Christian McCaffrey, who I don't necessarily agree with because he's had so
01:07many injured seasons.
01:08He's had three seasons completely martyred by injuries.
01:11That's too much for me to include on a list like this.
01:13But it's the first one that really struck a nerve, and that was Priest Holmes.
01:17His 2001 to 2003 was so incredibly good.
01:20But a hip injury essentially derailed his career.
01:23And luckily, they had Larry Johnson ready to step in and fill those shoes.
01:26But how do you not include Adrian Peterson?
01:28Seven-time Pro Bowler, four-time All-Pro, Offensive Player of the Year, and MVP in 2012, when he
01:33ran for 2,097 yards at six yards per carry.
01:38Six yards per carry.
01:40A bonkers number when you consider if you get to five yards a carry, you're doing a great
01:45job.
01:46He led and dragged that Minnesota Vikings team to the playoffs that year.
01:50And then when you take a look at the other aspects of it, seven Pro Bowls, bonkers.
01:56The best rushing season for a rookie.
01:59Awesome.
02:00The best rushing single game ever when he was a rookie.
02:04296 yards against the then San Diego Chargers.
02:07Insane.
02:08How do you not include that?
02:10Well, let's take a look at some of the criteria, which are frustrating themselves.
02:14The only thing that they are taking into account is the performance in the century.
02:18So anybody who had performances prior to the year 2000, those years do not count.
02:23Completely fair.
02:25These decisions were made mostly on statistical output, focusing on peak seasons while still
02:29rewarding longevity.
02:31They relied heavily on FTNs, Aaron Schatz, former football outsiders.
02:35He's the king of DVOA.
02:37His DYAR metric, defensive adjusted yards above replacement.
02:40It calculates the player's value over the course of the season compared to a replacement
02:43level baseline.
02:44This is why people don't take analytics serious because nowhere on here do they talk about
02:51how did he look on the field?
02:54It's all about data.
02:55It's all about stats.
02:56It's incredibly frustrating that we are at this point because Adrian Peterson deserves
03:02to be on that team.
03:03Hell, LaDainian Tomlinson wasn't on this team either.
03:07Those are arguably the two best running backs.
03:09The two guys will be in the Hall of Fame from this group and they're not included.
03:13What are we doing?
03:15Adrian Peterson is going to go down as probably a first ballot Hall of Famer.
03:19Maybe I should do my own list.
03:21Is this ridiculous?
03:22I'm Tyler Fornes, A to Z Sports, Skull Vikings.
