00:00Brady Cannon is with us breaking down the latest on the PGA Tour Travelers Championship of course
00:06underway just before tea time Scotty Scheffler was the favorite we'll get to him in a minute but
00:10first Brady let's recap what we saw at the U.S. Open and you know Brady sent a text you know
00:17through the weekend saying hey you know Adam Scott is somebody I like I'm like okay so this is the
00:22guy to watch meanwhile here comes Adam Scott final day I mean Brady everybody just falling
00:28all over themselves in that rough and then the intermediate rough and then the heavy rough I
00:32mean I don't even know what they call it there it was just so disastrous for so many players
00:36but J.J. Spahn had an iconic putt to win and I think that that will live forever on the PGA Tour
00:43really great finish yeah absolutely I think he kind of saved the tournament a little bit he saved
00:49the day anyway I thought the first three days Oakmont was the star I thought the U.S. Open was
00:56brilliant I thought it wasn't tricked up it wasn't quirky it wasn't unfair and at the same time it was
01:04extremely difficult and we got to see you know Scotty Scheffler actually find the rough and make
01:10mistakes it it really tested these players I think as much as we've ever seen but again I didn't feel
01:17it was unfair you know you saw John Rahm you saw Adam Scott these guys that were striping it down the
01:23middle of the fairway we're playing really well and we're making pars and that's what the U.S. Open is
01:28unfortunately Mother Nature got involved on Sunday and kind of kind of spoiled things I felt you know
01:34like our guy Adam Scott in the final pairing I thought he had a great shot and you know I think it
01:41really got to Sam Burns and it was almost more survival at that point and J.J. Spahn you know God bless him
01:48I mean I mean he had so many bad breaks in the front nine and then you know redemption on the back
01:54nine and again that big putt made it climactic because otherwise it felt like what was such a great
02:02tournament kind of got spoiled there with the weather down the stretch.
02:06So now we have the Travelers Championship coming up this weekend and you know certainly it's underway
02:11already and I think the odds are more or less stable here because some of the bigger names
02:15have not yet teed off in fact I see among the leaders thus far a few names I don't recognize
02:20and then I see Victor Hoblin who had a nice week last week at the U.S. Open so here are the odds to
02:25win. Scotty Scheffler 3-1, Rory McIlroy at 12, Xander 16-1, Morikawa 18-1, Cantlay 22, and Oberg
02:32at 25. Any of those names at the top interest you? I know we're going to get to some of the long
02:38shots that you have. Yeah you know Xander Schauffele almost made my card this week Craig. I really
02:44think he's just about ready to win again. He had a very good U.S. Open finished 12th. He's just a
02:50machine. I think he's finished top 15 at the U.S. Open maybe every single time he's played the U.S.
02:56Open in his career. Just always plays that tournament very very well and he's won this tournament the
03:03Travelers a couple years ago. I didn't end up going with him but of the short shots he was the one I
03:09like the most. You mentioned Victor Hovland now tied for the lead at four under par early on. He's
03:15only through seven holes already four under through seven holes. Word to the wise here though Victor
03:21Hovland is the number one liability at BetMGM. So he was a very popular pick this week and you know
03:29that's always a bit of a red flag for me. These books these sports books don't make a profit year
03:35and then you're out because the biggest liability gets them. Sometimes it does but I worry about that
03:41and I didn't really like Hovland was brilliant at times last week and then gosh he couldn't even
03:48buy a putt. He was so volatile you know and so a lot of people thought that would carry over and it
03:55looks like it has so far but I'm a little leery of Victor this week. Fair enough. Let's get to some
04:01of the long shots and you know certainly Robert McIntyre is a name everyone was familiar with
04:06after last week. Any other any other names here 40, 50 to 1 any dart throws for you at the Travelers?
04:14Yeah I've got three guys that have yet to tee off. Siwoo Kim, Brian Harmon and Matt Fitzpatrick. They
04:21have all done very very well on Pete Dye designs. Siwoo Kim of course has won the Players Championship.
04:27Brian Harmon has finished top 10 here at the Travelers seven times and Matt Fitzpatrick also
04:34has done very well on Dye design so that was certainly part of my handicap there. McIntyre and
04:41Davis Thompson are my other two plays and yeah I pretty much went all long bombs this week. I just
04:46found one reason or another to poke a hole in the favorites at the top of the board. We'll see how it
04:52pans out. Last year I had Tom Kim at 50 to 1. He went all the way to a playoff and ended up
04:57losing to Scheffler. I'll take that again. If I can get a long bomb all the way to a playoff
05:03that's not a bad spot to be but McIntyre was what I didn't I tried to stay away from some of the guys
05:10that were really in the gauntlet down the stretch last week at the U.S. Open. I felt that was probably
05:16mentally exhausting and you know McIntyre almost won the darn thing but he was sitting there in the
05:22clubhouse for two hours. You know he finished much earlier before he was really through that
05:27tough stuff down the stretch so I thought he might be able to carry some momentum over this week. We'll
05:32see. All right well Brady here is my big question for you. A year from now we're talking about the
05:39U.S. Open again. Do you think that the frustration that the players showed this past week forces the
05:46hand of the PGA Tour to make these courses more playable or is this I mean look at this has been
05:52going on for years. I get that and nothing has changed. Will that remain? It felt like this hit
05:56a crescendo this past weekend. Yeah you know like I say I think the first three days were were great.
06:03I thought it was a perfect balance of difficulty and fairness and then Mother Nature got involved and
06:09that made it really difficult. You know next year we're at Shinnecock Hills in New York. We've had a few
06:15championships there in the last 25-30 years. One year if you recall it absolutely crossed the line
06:22and got out of hand where the greens were you know baked out. They were like tabletops. They were having
06:27to water them during the middle of the tournament and that was really ugly and a bad look for the USGA.
06:34I hope we get something that is similar to what we saw at Oakmont for the first three days where it
06:40really is the ultimate test but again is not over the top and unfair and I think it feels like the USGA
06:49is going back to that direction. The old US Open that you and I grew up with Craig where you got to
06:54drive it straight and if you get offline you're you're in trouble. We've had a few bad US Opens in
07:00recent years but I I liked where they're headed this year certainly for the first part of it and
07:05hopefully that continues. Brady great catching up with you here on Newswire. Have a great weekend.
07:11You too my friend. Thank you.
