At Thursday's House Oversight Committee hearing, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) grilled Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY).
Transcript
00:00might be an Illinois problem. Governor Hochul, in your state you are spending
00:04about roughly four billion dollars on illegal immigration, and at the same time
00:08you are actually asking the federal government for four billion dollars to
00:12finish Penn Station. Don't you think it would be better to stop funding illegal
00:15immigrants in your state and actually use those resources to finish Penn
00:18Station as opposed to coming to the federal government for the money?
00:24Penn Station is owned by Amtrak, not by the state, so it's an appropriate
00:29use of their dollars and Donald Trump has agreed to spend upwards of seven
00:33billion dollars. I appreciated that very much. What we spend on immigrants, the
00:38immigrants who are here hard-working to live a life and working on our farms and
00:43taking care of our parents in nursing homes and taking care of our children,
00:47they have been coming here for 400 years and we don't keep track of individuals
00:52based on their status. We make sure that people have services so we don't end up
00:56with an unexpected. So essentially what you're telling me is that you keep no
01:01track of money that is going to people who are not legal in the United States,
01:05resources that are taken away from New Yorkers, resources that are taken away
01:09from Illinoisans. You guys do not keep track of any of this. You know what's
01:11really challenging is that many people came here with legal status, I mean
01:15temporary protective status, 300,000. Do you go along with the strategy from the
01:22Biden administration which massively expanded immigration protocols that
01:27overwhelmed your city and overwhelmed your state? Do you agree with that? We call
01:30for secure borders, we call for this body. I never remember you calling for secure
01:35borders at all Governor Hochul. That doesn't sound like him to my memory. Many
01:38conversations I had with the White House. We asked for federal resources. I mean
01:42you're putting a federal problem on our laps and you know what it gets old after a
01:46while. I wish you would just do your job. If your party actually would do the job of
01:50securing the nation the way President Trump has now had to do twice, we
01:54wouldn't be in this predicament. Wouldn't you agree? Do you agree or
01:59disagree that securing the nation's borders is the job of the President of
02:03the United States? President Trump has done that job twice now. Well, and
02:07previous Democrat presidents have not done that job. Wouldn't you agree with
02:10that? This has been a problem that's been in place since I was a young staffer
02:14here on Capitol Hill. We worked on immigration and Ronald Reagan signed amnesty for
02:18three million people. You know it's interesting you bring up Reagan's
02:20amnesty in 86. You know part of that deal was to actually build border war and
02:24secure it, but the Democrat party refuses to build border wall. You oppose it every
02:28single time. Is that your position? Do you now support border walls? There has been
02:31many times when bipartisan legislation is presented to this body and people just
02:37walk away from it. They refuse to do the hard work of governing like governors like
02:41us have to do every single day. When I leave here I'm gonna go home and
02:44govern a state. I'm not going to tweet about this experience because I have too
02:47much work to do taking care of New Yorkers. You're really not doing a good
02:50job Governor Hochul because a lot of New Yorkers are actually coming into my
02:53state, in Florida, many of them. They come all the time because they actually want
02:57to come to a state that is well-run, that protects citizens, does not allow
03:01illegal aliens to victimize citizens like they are victimized in the state of
03:05New York, like they are victimized in the state of Illinois, like they are
03:08victimized in the state of Minnesota. They choose states like Florida and Texas to find
03:12safer places to live and raise their families. Hold on Governor Hochul, we've had
03:16enough time. Our crime rates are much lower.
