00:30Good afternoon, everybody.
00:32Friday afternoon.
00:33Welcome to the last countdown of the week.
00:35And Rachel Riley, I've gone back to the ridiculous pile of countdown jumpers that have been knitted by our wonderful viewers from one comment that was made.
00:46We had that whole week, but it's starting to grow again.
00:48And I want to make sure that we're putting on these jumpers for the amazing work the viewers have done.
00:53Mary Byrne from County Dublin sent this one in.
00:57Fairly straightforward. Countdown here in the numbers. I like that. I like it.
01:01The colours are perfect. And down here, this is what makes this really special.
01:06Look at that. A mug for a mug.
01:08A nice cup of char.
01:09Yeah, like it.
01:10That's what you need to watch countdown, isn't it?
01:12Yeah, absolutely.
01:13Mary, thank you so much.
01:15Humbled that you sent this in.
01:16I'll have another one next Friday as we continue to work through them.
01:19But I want to give a shout out to another very special woman.
01:23I've got an obsession with this particular recording artist randomly.
01:28Gloria Estefan.
01:29Gloria Estefan, 66 years old today.
01:33An amazing thing about Gloria Estefan was she had so much success.
01:37I mean, she was one of the female artists that owned the 80s.
01:40But in 1990, she had a really bad tour bus crash.
01:44And she actually fractured her vertebrae.
01:47So, had to learn to walk again and everything.
01:50And when she eventually returned, I mean, everyone thought it could be career over.
01:54That's when she released the album, End of the Light,
01:58that has the brilliant coming out of the dark on it.
02:01What a track to release after coming back from what could have been a fatal accident.
02:06Do you like her? Is it in your era?
02:07I think you'll be jealous of my lovely husband, because he's danced on stage with her.
02:11Oh, my goodness me.
02:12Part of the little, you know, sets, the ballroom, whatever he does better.
02:17I'm surprised he stayed with you.
02:20Anyway, let's get on our feet for another countdown today
02:23as we head over to the woman I just can't stay away from.
02:26It is our Susie Dent.
02:28And it's just been such a joy to have Arlo Hanlon here all week.
02:32Last show of the week for Arlo.
02:33Music has been a bit of a theme, because Rachel Copley is a huge music fan.
02:41You've won five.
02:42We found out all about your art, the music that you love, your kids at home.
02:47But it was actually your love of crosswords that led to the romance of your life.
02:52It did, yeah.
02:54My husband, well, he wasn't my husband then,
02:56but I saw this man doing a crossword in the pub a few times.
02:58We had mutual friends.
03:00I just once said to him, can I help you with the crossword?
03:03He was using it sort of as a defence mechanism to keep people away from him.
03:07And I helped him.
03:08I think he was impressed.
03:09We became friends, regularly met, did crosswords, drank beer,
03:13realised we had a love for food, ate out quite a bit,
03:16and about eight months later, became a couple.
03:18And that was over 20 years ago.
03:19Oh, lovely.
03:21You worked out the ultimate puzzle, didn't you, there?
03:25Which is brilliant.
03:25I think the beer might have had more to do with it, to be fair, than the times crossword.
03:29Love it, Rachel.
03:30It's been great to have you.
03:31Fantastic champion.
03:32So, Ian Morris from Burry, originally a Warrington boy.
03:35Yeah.
03:36You got your work cut out for you.
03:37You really do today.
03:39And you've been to some iconic gigs.
03:42And this isn't me just going, let's talk about music.
03:44This is what we get told from our researchers.
03:46It's your life.
03:47You love your music.
03:48You were at Oasis at Main Road and Stone Roses at Heaton Park, right?
03:53Yeah.
03:53And I went to see Oasis at Earls Court before the Main Road as well.
03:57What's your top live music memory?
04:00Probably the Stone Roses gig, just because it was...
04:02No-one ever thought it was going to happen.
04:04And then all of a sudden it did, and it was brilliant, and they turned up.
04:08All right.
04:08Well, listen, you definitely maybe have a tough task ahead of you today.
04:12Good luck to Ian and Rachel.

11:37It's half a minute.
11:38How many, Rach? Seven. And how many, Ian? Six. The six is? Insect. And the seven? Minutes.
11:59Minutes, of course. There it is. Half a minute to get minutes. Another seven points on the board.
12:05It's been all about the letters so far for our champion at Ardell. And Susie, talk to me. Seven.
12:11Seven, yes. In minuets instead of minutes. But that was about it.
12:14Little change. So Rach once again stole this show. It's been better in the numbers, Ian.
12:19So let's get back there. OK, can I have one from the top and five from anywhere else, please?
12:24You're not gambling yet. You're keeping your cool. One large five, little.

13:24That's Gwilyan ways for this one.
13:26Any showboating, Rach?
13:27Same way.
13:28There you go.
13:29Well done, thank you.
13:32Hey, Ian, not a single point on the letter so far,
13:35and you're only 19 points behind.
13:37The importance of the number is still very much in this.
13:41As we chat for the last time this week,
13:42the Ardell O'Hanlon.
13:44I'm going to do some on-air booking here,
13:46because we love having you.
13:47You'll come back in a few months, yes?
13:49Possibly, yes.
13:50What do you mean possibly?
13:51We've treated you great.
13:52I need to improve.
13:54I need to do better.
13:55I will spend the next few months learning the dictionary.
13:59What is coming up in the next few months for you?
14:01Different stuff.
14:05Sound like you're a criminal now.
14:07Yeah, you are.
14:08I guess some acting stuff and some stand-up.
14:11I do a lot of stand-up.
14:13Yeah.
14:13And I'm doing a documentary or two in the coming months as well.
14:17So a variety of stuff.
14:18Yeah.
14:18I'll always look at you as a stand-up comedian first,
14:21going back to your origins in Dublin.
14:23But the acting, a lot of people might see you more in that.
14:29So how important is the acting to you?
14:31Well, yeah, it's funny, like I didn't see myself as an actor when I started.
14:35I started very much as a stand-up comedian and that's what I thought I would do for the
14:39rest of my life.
14:40First acting job I ever got.
14:43This gave me a real taste for it.
14:44I did a crime reconstruction, actually, in one of those kind of, you know,
14:48those true crime shows that the police were involved in.
14:52And it was an inauspicious beginning.
14:56I was playing a small-time hood who got shot in the back of the legs.
15:00And I thought, this is my big break.
15:02And I was only about 21 at the time.
15:04And I remember I had no lines to say.
15:09So I just kind of made a noise, like, ah!
15:13As you would.
15:14And I remember the director pulling me aside.
15:16And I thought he was going to say, well done, you know, that was really accurate.
15:19You know, you really nailed it.
15:20But he didn't, he said I was a bit over the top.
15:23And I'm kind of looking, I'm going, like, how can you be over the top
15:26being shot in the back of the legs?
15:27Like, you know, what are you supposed to do?
15:28Oh, sorry, could you stop that?
15:29It's a little bit sore.
15:31So that was my first acting job.
15:33I didn't act again for about ten years.
15:36But so I never really saw myself as an actor.
15:38What was the thing that pushed you to loving it then?
15:41I think, like, I suppose one thing leads to another.
15:44You know, I ended up doing sitcom, sort of, you know, two sitcoms in a row,
15:48then sort of gravitating towards drama.
15:49And you just, you know, you just begin to really love the life.
15:53And I think it was when I started doing theatre, which was a bit later,
15:56that I really got the book, where I really said for the first time in my life,
15:59I am now an actor.
16:00Like, even when you're doing sitcom, you're not, I don't know.
16:04So it's partly the way other people look at you,
16:06like, that you're not really a proper actor doing sitcom.
16:08Although I think it's probably the hardest thing to do, to be honest with you.
16:11But it's only when you do theatre and you get down and dirty, you know,
16:15that people begin to take you seriously as an actor.
16:17Yeah.
16:18And you must learn so much from it.
16:21And that's the beauty of it, is working with great directors,
16:23working with great actors, and you pick up stuff all the time.
16:26No, but, well, listen, do us a favour.
16:28I know you're busy.
16:28Fill us in at some stage soon.
16:30Yeah.
16:30Thank you, Mick.
16:3419 points of difference.
16:36Back to the letters.
16:37That's where you've been ruling today's show.
16:39Let's get nine more.
16:40Consonate, please, Rachel.
16:41Thank you, Rach.
16:42G.
16:43And another.
16:45D.
16:46A third.
16:48G.
16:49And a fourth.
16:51V.
16:52Vowel, please.

17:42The four is...
17:42Paid.
17:43Paid and...
17:44Vapid.
17:45Vapid it is.
17:46Can we add anything?
17:47Genuinely, no.
17:48No, not even a made-up one.
17:52Dreadful.
17:52Dreadful letters.
17:54Let's get better ones.
17:55I don't think we could get worse, Ian.
17:57Off we go.
17:57A consonant, please.
17:59Thank you, Ian.

18:25D.
18:25Not bad at all.
18:27Here we go.
18:27You.
18:28You.
18:34Here we go.
18:34MUSIC PLAYS
18:58Has anyone got to tick the risk? How many in?
19:01I'll risk it, no.
19:02LAUGHTER
19:04Rach?
19:05Seven.
19:06The seven. Erin in the safe side, it is...
19:09Grast.
19:10Yes, and I think we know what Ian's going to say.
19:12Degrast.
19:13Yes.
19:14Yeah, I did look that one up and it's not there, I'm sorry, Ian.
19:18Anything else?
19:19We had degrades.
19:20Degrades. De-gast.
19:22Another one we can add, though, I say we, the royal we, I mean, Rachel Riley.
19:27Well, I mean, the D there, it's probably... I wouldn't risk it.
19:31No.
19:32Dressage isn't a word, is it?
19:33Dressage is brilliant, but not low as a verb.
19:36Yeah.
19:37Brilliant with eight.
19:38There you go, the old horse dancing, very good.
19:40Ian, let's get back to these numbers.
19:41You've been maximum on these so far.
19:43Let's see if we make it three in a row.
19:45Rach, you're choosing.
19:46The usual, please.
19:47One from the top and five from anywhere else.
19:49The usual.
19:50Thank you, Rach.
19:51Five little ones coming up for you.
19:53And they are one, seven, ten, three, two, and the big one, 25.

20:40Lost it completely.
20:41Ian?
20:41Absolutely nothing.
20:42Oh, what a shame.
20:43Well, listen, you didn't lose.
20:45Didn't lose that round.
20:468-6-1.
20:48Difficult?
20:49I think you had it in about three, four seconds.
20:51I was looking at you.
20:52It's divisible by seven.
20:54So once you know that, you can say 10 divided by two is five,
20:58times by 25 for 125,
21:01three minus one is two.
21:04Take that off for one, two, three,
21:05and one, two, three, times seven, 8-6-1.
21:08Nice.
21:11The second three-time teaser of the day is bad steed.
21:15Bad steed.
21:16A stuffed bear from Luton, have a lie down.
21:19A stuffed bear from Luton, have a lie down.
21:21Welcome back.
21:38From bad steed to bed steed.
21:41But why?
21:41A lot going on there, actually.
21:42A stuffed bear from Luton, have a lie down.
21:45I get that bed steed,
21:48but what's the connection to Luton, Ardell, Susie?
21:51Luton's in Bedfordshire, isn't she?
21:52Bedfordshire.
21:54Bedstead, your homestead.
21:55Fantastic.
21:57These tea-time teasers are unbelievable.
21:59Six rounds left.
22:00Let's get nine more letters.
22:02A consonant, please.
22:03Thank you, Ian.

23:09Seven.
23:10Oh, look at this.
23:11Go on, Ian.
23:11Thinner.
23:12Yes, it's there, Rachel.
23:14Tanya.
23:15As in, full of tannins, maybe.
23:17I don't think you're going to be lucky here, Rachel.
23:19It's not Ian, I'm afraid.
23:21Yes, yes.
23:21Ian gets his first points on the letters.
23:24Yes.
23:25Come on, that's what we wanted to see.
23:27Anything else, Susie and Ardell?
23:29An old locomotive is a next train.
23:33A next train.
23:35Not there, sadly.
23:37We had hairnet for seven, and for eight, there is xanthine.
23:42So, X-A-N-T-H-I-N-E.
23:45It's a compound found in blood and urine,
23:47and it's involved in the breakdown of acids to uric acid.

24:18T.
24:19And a final consonant, please.
24:22A final D.
24:23Good luck.
24:24Good luck.
24:55Rachel? Seven. Ian? Seven. Look at this. What have we got? Fronted. Fronted. Same word, fronted.
25:02Yep. To dictionary corner. Well, I mean, you've got to try it, don't you?
25:08And it's entroped. Entroped? Sounds very, very clever. Doesn't it? Yes. It's got to mean something.
25:15It's not there, sadly. I think I'm using the wrong dictionary. I think so.
25:19We did have a pentode, which is a valve with five electrodes.
25:22Yes. You always spoil it by going for words that are in the dictionary. I know. I'm so sorry.
25:26I find that. Right. 58 plays 34. This is not over yet. Four more rounds to go after our origins of words.
25:34We've been on this number journey, haven't we, for three days. How are we finishing the week?
25:38Yes. We are finishing the week with a question to myself. Because...
25:43Did you actually physically email countdownachannel4.com? I didn't. I didn't quite go that far.
25:48But my question to myself was, why do we call these bits of the hairline temples, or these bits of your head, your temples, really?
25:56Here, yeah. Yeah.
25:57And I had never contemplated this at all, but somebody said they were growing at the temples, and I thought, oh, that's an interesting one.
26:04Because the temple that is an open or a consecrated space, that goes back to the Latin templum.
26:11And they actually had another name for the temple, which was fanum.
26:14And we get profane from that, because profane means standing in front of the temple, in other words, outside, so it's not sacred.
26:23But this is... That's a different templum.
26:25But the temple, which is the part of your forehead, is very different.
26:29And it goes back to the Latin tempus, which means time.
26:33And this ripples beautifully through English.
26:35It gives us contemporary.
26:37It gives us the grammatical tense, which is all about a moment in time.
26:41It gives us temporary, which is a brief moment in time.
26:44Tempo, of course, which is the musical term.
26:47And also in fencing, tempo is sort of the timing of an attack, really.
26:51And tempest, that goes back to tempus as well, because in Latin, the tempestas, which is a relative from the same family, was a season as well.
27:00It's like a stormy season, if you like, as well as the storm itself.
27:05So, temple, why on earth?
27:07What has this got to do with time?
27:08Well, it's because the hair that grows over the temples on each side of your head is often the first one to turn grey from age.
27:16And that is a visible sign of the passage of time.
27:19Isn't that beautiful?
27:20Isn't that wonderful?
27:20Never really thought about that.
27:22And if anyone's ever wondered about sideburns as well, what's the burns bit?
27:26Actually, they used to be called burnsides, and they were named after General Ambrose Burnside, who was a US army officer in the 19th century.
27:35Very famous for his very distinctive burnsides.
27:39But the side bit seemed like it should come first, so we flipped it a few decades later.
27:45It just sounded right.
27:46Yeah.
27:46It's happened a lot.
27:47That was brilliant.
27:48Well done.
27:50Four lines left.
27:51Ian, letters, and you're choosing.

28:58Rich?

29:00What's the six?
29:01I don't think the word abouts.
29:02The seven is?
29:03Washtub.
29:04Washtub.
29:05Washtub, all one word, so it was a risk, but no hyphen in that one.
29:08And we can have abouts, yeah.
29:10Lovely.
29:11What else do we have?
29:12Not much, I'm afraid.
29:13I was pretty sure there for a while that autobans was the word that was in there, but it wasn't.
29:19Well, almost, just need another A. We have washout for seven.
29:23Nice.
29:24Very good indeed.
29:25This looked like a washout, didn't it after a few rounds? Definitely hasn't been that way.
29:2965 plays 34.
29:31Last letters round, Rachel Copley.
29:33A consonant please, Rachel.

30:39Dictionary corner?
30:40I think we can go seven.
30:41Yeah.
30:42Latency.
30:43Latency.
30:44Yes, if something is latent, it's kind of bubbling under,
30:46not quite showing itself yet.
30:48That's lovely.
30:48That's sensational.
30:49Great seven.
30:50That's us done.
30:51Yes.
30:51Wonderful.
30:52OK, last numbers round.

30:56Let's go again.
30:57Can I have six little ones, please?
30:59You can indeed wake our brains up just before the weekend
31:02with a little challenge.
31:04And they are six, three, two, five, one, and ten.

31:28And the target to reach with them, 492, last numbers.
31:29And the target to reach with them, 492, last numbers.
31:30Time's up, Ian.
31:484-9-3.
31:49One away, Rachel.
31:514-9-8.
31:52Further away, Ian for seven points.
31:55Six plus one is seven.
31:56Six plus one is seven.
31:58Five plus two is seven.
32:00It is.
32:01Times them together.
32:0349.
32:03Times the ten, plus the three.
32:054-9-3.
32:07One away.
32:08Now, either Rachel's going to say, this is impossible,
32:10or she's going to say, well, that's divisible by...
32:13And then you're going to see something magic.
32:15If you add the digits up,
32:16you can work out that it's divisible by six.
32:18Yay!
32:19And then five plus three is eight.
32:22Times by ten is 80.
32:24Add two is 82.
32:26And 82 times six is 492.
32:29Unbelievable.

33:16Listen, it's been a long time coming for you, Ian,
33:18because you said you've been watching the show since you were eight.
33:21And I took eight away from your age.
33:23That means you've watched from day one.
33:25Yeah.
33:26Why so long to come and say hello?
33:28Because I'm not good at the letters.
33:31And it's that type of honesty I absolutely love.
33:34I think you actually were.
33:35I just think she's brilliant.
