00:30Hello, everybody. It's Countdown on Tuesday, September the 5th.
00:35As we take a trip through ten letters rounds, we'll stop off for four numbers.
00:39And our final destination, of course, as always, the Countdown conundrum.
00:43A lot of road to go before we get there.
00:46And riding shotgun is Rachel Riley. Hiya.
00:48Hiya.
00:4966 years ago today, Jack Kerouac's seminal on-the-road novel was released.
00:56An absolute modern-day classic.
00:58And, of course, it's him and his mates taking a road trip across the United States of America.
01:03I'm guessing your American adventures maybe weren't the same as Jack Kerouac's.
01:07At least I'm hoping not.
01:10But in terms of your times in America, where's your, like, number one destination that you've been?
01:15Well, I mean, Hawaii, number one, number one.
01:17Oh, interesting.
01:17But when people are on road trips, especially around California, I always send them to a place called Solvang.
01:22Have you heard of Solvang?
01:23No.
01:24It's this town in near wine country in California.
01:27And it's what Americans think Europe is like.
01:31So I think it's supposed to be Dutch, but it's got windmills, it's got clogs, it's got cuckoo clogs, it's got Danish pastries.
01:39And it's just, like, if someone had never been to America but took something hallucinogenic, had a dream about it, and then made it and said it was real.
01:47It's everything shoved into one, and it's the weirdest place you'll ever go.
01:50There's loads of little European pockets like that on my baseball road trips.
01:55You'll just discover places like Frankenmuth, which is just between Detroit and Chicago, and that's German.
02:01And I remember once driving through Death Valley during a heat wave for Death Valley, which, you know, was ludicrous.
02:09And, you know, your eyes burned the minute you get out of the car.
02:13But I stopped to fill up on gas, on petrol, and the guy behind the counter, I won't do the accent, he says, have you got a jerry can filled up with gas?
02:24I was like, no.
02:25And I was like, why would I need that?
02:27And he said, because if you run out of petrol, you will die.
02:31So a lovely road trip, which was meant to be a leisurely drive, and literally was like this for seven hours.
02:37So you'd done your research before you went there?
02:39No, I've never.
02:40Did you have your lip gloss and your, you know, four pairs of sunglasses, but no jerry can?
02:45Exactly.
02:46But as long as you've got your Vaseline, that's all that matters.
02:49Take from that what you will.
02:51Well, listen, let's take our usual route now through Dictionary Corner.
02:56We find the engine of Countdown.
02:58Ready to get into gear again, Susie Dent, alongside a man who keeps many entertained on their drive to work of the morning on his Five Live radio show.
03:07Presenter and author, Rick Edwards.
03:08But today is all about our champion, Rachel Copley, who's been a delight.
03:16Seven wins in the bag.
03:17I know you love your stats.
03:19During each break, she pesters me for three, four minutes.
03:23What's the score?
03:23What did it get?
03:24You have all the stats.
03:25So, 620 points so far.
03:28We've had two Octo Champs this series.
03:32So, I'll tell you now, there's no way you're not going to be.
03:35Regardless of what happens today, you will make the end of season.
03:38Big eight, which is an amazing achievement.
03:40I'll try my best.
03:41Yes, there you go.
03:41Well, now I've heaped all that pressure in, Rachel.
03:43Let's introduce our challenger, Talha Modak from Leicester.
03:48How are you, Talha?
03:49I'm fine.
03:49How are you?
03:50Good stuff.
03:50You've got a lovely smile.
03:51You've got a lovely smile.
03:53I've found out loads of things about you, right?
03:56Student at the University of York.
03:57Could have talked about that.
03:59Done loads of good volunteer and charity work.
04:02We could have talked about that.
04:03But then I found out that you survived for an entire week only eating Jaffa cakes.
04:08And there's only, you know, Rachel, you know how my mind works.
04:13There's no way we're going to talk about the charity work now.
04:15But what are you doing?
04:17Tell me about it.
04:18Basically, when you go into uni, you have no idea how to cook.
04:22If you haven't cooked at home before.
04:23Right.
04:24And I had, like, lots of, like, stuff in my fridge.
04:28But I didn't know how to make use of them.
04:30So, we have a local store.
04:33And on the way back from one of my lectures, I was like, um, it has carbohydrates.
04:40It has the sugar.
04:41I might as well live off it for the entire week.
04:44And did it work?
04:44It was all good.
04:45It did, yeah.
04:46Let's see if it makes you a champion today.
04:47Good luck, Talha and Rachel.
04:52OK, deep breath.
04:53What a big day, Rachel.
04:55Let's start.
04:56Good afternoon, Rachel.
04:57Afternoon, Rachel.
04:58Start with a consonant, please.
04:59Start today with D.
05:02And the second.
05:04S.
05:05And the third.
05:07N.
05:08One more.
05:11C.
05:12A vowel, please.
05:14E.
05:15And the second.
05:16I.
05:17And the third.
05:18U.
05:21Consonant, please.
05:22M.
05:24And one more vowel, please.
05:26Lastly, E.
05:28At the whole man in the studio, let's play Countdown.
05:32Add in.
05:33Let's order.
05:34We will run.
05:35We will move on over and move on over to you next week.
05:35The second.
05:35Acta Un Cheng festival.
05:36We'll be.
05:37sucking fast.
05:38We will be.
05:40We'll be able.
05:40We'll be ready.
05:44Bye.
05:49Yeah.
05:49See.
05:50Bye.
05:50Bye.
05:51Bye.
05:51Hey, Bye.
06:00We'll finally move on.
06:00All righty, all righty. Rachel?
06:03Six. And Talha? Six as well.
06:06And six. OK, steady start.
06:07Minced. Minced? Minced as well.
06:10You'll have to show her, she likes to inspect.
06:13There you go. Six points each.
06:15Confirmed by Copley as we head to Dictionary Corner.
06:18Er, miscued for seven? Yes, lovely.
06:21And then, can we pluralise endemic?
06:25We can. So, if something is endemic, it's regularly found,
06:28but it's almost native to a particular area and endemic plants
06:32or animals are called endemics.
06:34That would be in eight.
06:35APPLAUSE
06:38Very good. Six points each.
06:40Talha, pick me some letters, will you?
06:42Hi, Rachel. Hi, Talha. Can I start with a consonant, please?
06:45You can indeed start with S.
06:47Er, another consonant.
06:50T. Er, vowel.
06:53U. Consonant.
06:56N. Vowel.
06:59E. Er, consonant.
07:02L. Er, another consonant, please.
07:04D. Er, another consonant.
07:08G. And a final vowel, please.
07:11And a final O.
07:1330 seconds.
07:15T. Er, the consonant, please.
07:30Tauha?
07:46A seven.
07:47And Rachel?
07:47Seven.
07:48And a seven, matching each other all the way.
07:50What's the word?
07:50Lounges.
07:51Lounges?
07:52And lounges.
07:55Nice, nice.
07:56Good letters, those.
07:57Interesting words.
07:58What else do we have?
07:59A couple of other sevens, loudest tongues.
08:05And then maybe, can we have unlodges for eight?
08:08Yeah, it means the same as dislodges, so I think a bit rarer,
08:11but it's in the dictionary.
08:12So, yeah, eight.
08:13What a start, Rick.
08:14What a start.
08:17In the game of 13 points all, Rachel.
08:20The numbers have really been your strength as a seven-time champion.
08:24Let's get our first round today.
08:26Stick with the usual, please.
08:27Your usual.
08:28One from the top row, five from the bottom ones.
08:31Thank you, Rachel.
08:32First numbers of the day.
08:34Eight.
08:35Six.
08:36Seven.
08:37Five.
08:39Nine.
08:39And the large one, 50.
08:41And the target, 748.
08:44Seven for eight.
08:45Numbers up.
08:45momento.
08:46We'll be talking.
08:46We'll see you next time.
08:47Bye-bye.
08:47See ya.
08:48Bye-bye.
08:50Rachel?
09:17748.
09:17And Talha?
09:18748.
09:19Yeah, well done.
09:20Off we go.
09:219 plus 6 is 15.
09:229 plus 6 is 15.
09:24Times 50 is 750.
09:25Yep.
09:267 minus 5 is 2.
09:28Lovely.
09:28Take it off.
09:29That's one way, 748.
09:31No messing about.
09:32Was it the same way, Talha?
09:33Exactly.
09:33Same way.
09:33OK.
09:35Yep.
09:35Well done.
09:37So, end of part one,
09:39we've only had two suggested words from you
09:41and exactly the same way you've done the numbers.
09:43You've literally matched each other,
09:45round for round.
09:46Excellent stuff.
09:4623 points each in the first Tea Time teaser.
09:49is nice talc.
09:51Nice talc.
09:52It has the ability to make you laugh in church.
09:55It has the ability to make you laugh in church.
09:57Welcome back.
10:14Let's head straight over to Susie for an explanation of the Tea Time teaser.
10:18It has the ability to make you laugh in church.
10:20Maybe pronounce canticle?
10:22Canticle, yes.
10:23It's a relative of chant, actually,
10:25and it's a little hymn or a little chant
10:26that you'll find as part of the church service.
10:29Talha, really good start.
10:3023 points all.
10:31Let's get back to the letters.
10:32Can we start with a consonant, please?
10:35Thank you, Talha.
10:36M.
10:37Another one.
10:39F.
10:39Another consonant, please.
10:41L.
10:42Vowel.
10:44E.
10:45Another vowel.
10:46O.
10:47Consonant.
10:49R.
10:50Consonant.
10:53P.
10:54Vowel.
10:55I.
10:56And a final consonant, please.
10:59A final T.
11:00Thank you, Rich.
11:00Thank you, Rich.
11:30Tawha.
11:32Seven.
11:33And Rachel?
11:34Seven.
11:35Yeah, I'm not surprised.
11:36Is it the same word?
11:36What do you got?
11:37Implore.
11:38Profile.
11:39Oh, well, at least we had a bit of a change.
11:40Implore and profile.
11:41There you go.
11:43Having her best lives here.
11:44Anything else?
11:45No, just loftier, again for seven.
11:48Yeah.
11:49Yeah, no improvement.
11:50Nothing else in there.
11:50All right, more letters from Rachel.
11:52Consonant, please, Rachel.
11:54Thank you, Rich.
11:55R.
11:55And a second.
11:57D.
11:58Third.
12:00T.
12:01And one more.
12:02L.
12:03And a vowel, please.
12:05A.
12:06And a second.
12:07I.
12:08And a third.
12:10E.
12:11Consonant, please.
12:13W.
12:14And a final vowel, please.
12:16And a final I.
12:19Half a minute.
12:50Give me a number, Rachel.
12:51Seven.
12:52Give me a number, Talha.
12:53Seven.
12:53There you go.
12:54Dilator.
12:55Dilator.
12:56Trailed.
12:57And trailed, trailed and dilator.
12:59The seven's coming thick and fast.
13:01Unfortunately, it's dilator, not dilator.
13:05So we can't have the ER, I'm afraid.
13:07There you go.
13:08Little bit of unexpected drama, which means Talha takes the lead by seven points.
13:13Rick, how did you get on?
13:15Yeah, no improvement on trailed, actually.
13:18No.
13:18Nope, not at all.
13:19We were all rooting for the last vowel to be an E.
13:22That would have opened everything up for us.
13:24As it is, challenger with a slight lead and Talha picking the numbers.
13:28Can I have two large and four small, please?
13:30You can indeed.
13:31Slight deviation from the one we've had for a while.
13:34And these four little ones for you are two, six, five and nine.
13:41And the big ones, 25 and 50.
13:44And this target, very small, one, three, five.
13:48Let's see if it's easy.
13:49One, three, five.
13:50We'll see if it's easy.
14:121-3-5, Tawha?
14:211-3-5.
14:22And Rich?
14:231-3-5.
14:24Off you go, Tawha.
14:252 times 50 is 100.
14:27100.
14:29Plus 25.
14:311-2-5.
14:32Add the 6 and the 9.
14:346 and 9, 140.
14:355.
14:36Yeah, 1-3-5.
14:371-3-5, Rachel?
14:38Same way.
14:40Yep.
14:41Well done.
14:42APPLAUSE
14:43OK, let's pause and have a chat with a brilliant Rick Edwards.
14:46Love having him on Countdown.
14:49I count you as a friend.
14:50And as a friend, you know, talk to me about anything you want,
14:53apart from your kid.
14:54OK.
14:55So, the thing that I want to talk about,
14:57I just felt like I'd take this opportunity to offer a defence of sharks.
15:01Yes.
15:02Because sometimes you've got to get on your soapbox
15:04and defend the things that you like.
15:06And recently, there has been a very sad fatality,
15:10there's a shark attack in Egypt.
15:13And what happens whenever there's a shark attack
15:15is that the media gets a bit frothy
15:18and starts talking about sharks being dangerous.
15:21And I always want to just say to people,
15:24sharks really aren't dangerous.
15:25The chances of getting bitten by a shark are so, so low.
15:29So, on average, there are six fatalities every year from shark attacks.
15:35All of them unprovoked.
15:38Sharks aren't really trying to eat you
15:39because we're not good food for sharks,
15:41because we're not fatty enough.
15:42They're just trying to sort of investigate.
15:44But the way that they investigate is obviously with their mouths.
15:47And the sort of chances...
15:48So, for example, in America,
15:49the chances of getting attacked by a shark are about one in four million.
15:53And you kind of compare that to the number of human bites
15:57in America every year, 250,000.
15:59Wow.
16:00So, you kind of...
16:01I think people lose a bit of perspective.
16:03The other thing that really kind of upsets me about it
16:06is that we kill a huge number of sharks.
16:09So, six humans killed on average a year by sharks.
16:14We kill about 100 million sharks.
16:16Yes.
16:16Every year, partly for shark fin soup,
16:21which is really bad for you because they're apex predators,
16:24so anything bad accumulates in them.
16:26So, apart from the sort of ethical reasons,
16:28you shouldn't eat it because it won't be good for you.
16:31And then loads of bycatch,
16:32so just sharks getting caught in fishing nets.
16:36And so I just always want to kind of be like the anti-Jaws guy,
16:40because Peter Benchley, famously, who wrote Jaws,
16:41and Spielberg, in fairness,
16:43since they produced the book and the film,
16:46have always felt incredibly guilty.
16:48So, Peter Benchley spent the rest of his life
16:49campaigning on behalf of sharks
16:50because he knew that he'd done a sort of great disservice to them, in a way.
16:54Yeah.
16:54More people die from fallen coconuts,
16:56and nobody made a film about that.
16:58No.
16:59But it's not a bad idea, is it?
17:00LAUGHTER
17:01Yeah.
17:02LAUGHTER
17:02What are we calling it?
17:04Ouch!
17:05LAUGHTER
17:05We're going to need a bigger cocktail.
17:09LAUGHTER
17:09No, well pointed out.
17:11Good thing to talk about.
17:14APPLAUSE
17:14Our challenger with just a slender seven-point lead.
17:19Let's see how the scores read at the end of this round, Rach.
17:22Constantly, please, Rachel.
17:23Thank you, Rach.
17:24Here we go.
17:49MUSIC PLAYS
17:50MUSIC PLAYS
18:22Eight, Talha.
18:23Eight, not written down.
18:24What have you got?
18:25Bantered.
18:26Bantered.
18:27Rentable.
18:28Rentable and bantered.
18:30Both excellent.
18:31There you go.
18:31That was key, then.
18:36Well done.
18:36Eight points each.
18:37Really generous letters.
18:39Can we add anything?
18:40Nothing.
18:40I don't think so, no.
18:41No, no.
18:41Those are our two, yeah.
18:42That'll do.
18:43Look at that.
18:44We've handed out over 100 points already.
18:46Let's do it again, Talha.
18:48Can we start with a consonant, please?
18:50Thank you, Talha.
18:50Another one.
18:55Y.
18:56Third.
18:58G.
18:58Vowel, please.
19:00A.
19:01Consonant.
19:03H.
19:04Vowel.
19:06E.
19:07Consonant.
19:08R.
19:09Another consonant.
19:12S.
19:12And a final vowel.
19:14A final.
19:15I.
19:16Start the clock.
19:17And a final vowel.
19:29I.
19:30S.
19:30I.
19:31I.
19:32I.
19:32I.
19:33I.
19:34I.
19:35I.
19:35I.
19:36I.
19:36I.
19:37I.
19:38I.
19:39Talha.
19:48Just a six.
19:49A six.
19:50Rachel.
19:51A risky seven.
19:52OK.
19:52Talha.
19:53Sharer.
19:54Here's the word.
19:55Gashier.
19:57Gashier.
19:57I've just got this up on my dictionary, checking it out.
20:01So gashi is in, of the nature or resembling a gash.
20:06But it's not specified in the comparative, so I can't allow it.
20:10I'm so sorry.
20:11Big moment, because that extends Talha has to lead over that magic ten points.
20:15Way too early.
20:16I'm getting way too excited.
20:18Dictionary corner, what have you got?
20:19Could I have Harry's for seven?
20:22You can.
20:23Stop harrying me.
20:25And you can stick a g on the beginning of that to having Gary's,
20:28which in South Asia are horse-drawn carriages, available for hire.
20:31That's wonderful.
20:32More numbers now.
20:34Rachel.
20:34I hate to be boring, but one for the top.
20:36You're not gambling.
20:37You're not gambling.
20:38You still want to be an octo-champ, but you're playing it cautiously.
20:42Let's see how those tactics pay off.
20:43Final pick from you for a while.
20:45Thank you, Rachel.
20:46They are five, ten, eight, six, three and 100.
20:52And the target for you, very small, one, four, four.
20:56One, four, four.
20:57Numbers up.
21:22Bye-bye.
21:22Fairly straightforward, but a lot of pressure in the studio.
21:31Did you get there, Rich?
21:33No.
21:34Talha.
21:35I got 144.
21:36144, off you go.

23:58What do we have?
23:59Horrible words.
24:00Spigot?
24:01Spigot?
24:02Yes.
24:03You have a spigot on a cask of beer, for example, it's the sort of little tap that you might
24:08turn.
24:09Spigot?
24:10So, when you buy the...
24:11Show him a class here.
24:13Yeah.
24:14When you buy the box of wine, is that a spigot?
24:16The little tap, yeah.
24:17Or it can also be a little plug.
24:18Oh, okay.
24:19That's all right.
24:20Look at his little face.
24:21Delighted with that.
24:22I hope when a word comes up you're not expecting, you have a good chat about it.

25:22Do you think?
25:23Now?
25:24Oh, Daddy.
25:25We'll sort this thing together.
25:25Do anything.
25:26And something else?
25:27What do you think?
25:27Well, what?
25:27Well, come on.
25:29Is it no matter?
25:29I Lands please.
25:32Rachel six talha six as well that's up on across across and scorns scorns across
25:39everybody just struggling to get beyond the six did you manage it Rick no I
25:45mean acorns yeah no lines Rowan's we're all at sixes right we'll leave it at
25:51that 17 points in at four rounds at left as we get our origins of words for
25:58today are we staying with animals we're not actually we are going to a fantastic
26:03question from the Goodwins in Raynham in Essex who emailed to ask why the word
26:09baffles means puzzles but also there are battles in an exhaust system is there a
26:14connection and where does the word come from and it's a great question not least
26:19because this is one of those words that has undergone a startling dramatic change
26:25in its meaning over the centuries and there are a few other many of these
26:28actually to be fair now it was first mentioned in around 1548 when it was
26:34talked about as being a Scottish word or a Scots word and the Scots dictionaries as I
26:39often say on countdown are just these wonderful treasure troves of fantastic
26:43words including if you remember my favorite to tartle to tartle is to
26:48hesitate when introducing someone because you've completely forgotten their name and
26:51there were just gems in there so it actually meant to disgrace someone but
26:58not just that particularly to disgrace a knight so it was all about humiliating a
27:03knight and in this record of 1548 there is a record of what happened during the
27:09time of Henry VIII and it says he was content that the Scots should baffle him
27:13which is a great reproach among the Scots and is used when a man is openly
27:17perjured and then they make of him an image painted reversed with his heels
27:22upward with his name wandering crying and blowing out of him with horns so they
27:28clearly made this image of this knight strung up by his heels apparently on some
27:33occasions the knight himself was strung up by the heels and that hung from a tree
27:36and then humiliated jeered at etc I mean so pretty horrible so it was to
27:41subject to that public disgrace and then over the centuries it came to mean to
27:45perplex someone to bewilder them which is exactly presumably what the night felt
27:49like and that was its main meaning and then if you are baffled obviously you are
27:53still perplexed but on to that second question that came from the Goodwins is
27:57a connection with the baffles that use an exhaust system or sometimes in those
28:00stoves where you I can't I'm so non-technical non-scientific but you kind of
28:07alter the heat settings essentially by turning at these baffles their
28:11contrivance is used in furnaces essentially and the idea here is you
28:14interrupt the natural course of the air and you make it pass in another
28:18direction so again it's about hoodwinking if you like it's about putting
28:22something slightly off track but who knew that those baffles and to feel
28:28baffled today mildly bemused actually goes back to a very public disgrace of a night
28:32wow
