00:30Bonjour, welcome to Countdown. On the 14th of July, Bastille Day in France, commemorating the Storm of the Bastille in 1789.
00:41And, Rachel Riley, you have first-hand experience of this. Not the Storm of the Bastille.
00:45Excuse me!
00:46But the actual Bastille Day itself. You've been there for the celebrations.
00:51I've been in France, yeah. I did a little three-week trip with my mother-in-law and Pasha, and we went all the way through France.
00:57And on the 14th of July, we happened to be in Paris. So we did a riverboat cruise, and then they stopped right by the Eiffel Tower for all the amazing fireworks. It's lovely.
01:06Apart from being in Paris for Bastille Day, have you got a favourite lesser-spotted area?
01:11Well, we travelled quite a lot of it. So right in the centre, there's an area called the Perigore, which you don't hear too many people talking about.
01:18And there's a beautiful little old, really, really old village with a beautiful old bridge and caves and the type of place where you can go and just get a market with fresh bread and freshly cooked mushrooms and really simple but really French food.
01:32And just totally green, just gorgeous and green in that area.
01:35You realise we could be describing Britain.
01:38Yeah.
01:38So similar.
01:40If we had the sun, if we had the sun.
01:41If we had just a bit, exactly.
01:43If the temperature was four or five degrees, well, we shouldn't tempt that, should we?
01:46The temperature being three or four degrees, hotter, unfortunately.
01:49But it's exactly the same thing, discovering those little villages right in our doorstep, whether it's here or France.
01:54OK, au revoir for now.
01:55Over in Dixonry Corner, we've got our G of the D, of course, in Susie Dent.
02:00But we've also got a D of the J, pioneering DJ and presenter Trevor Nelson.
02:09Good to be here. Good to be here, Colin.
02:11Lovely to have you. Many, many stories coming your way.
02:14We used to be cool one day, but we'll get to that later.
02:17David's our champion. Six wins already, high score of 100.
02:21You got a beautiful word yesterday, which was cajon, and it was C-A-J-O-N.
02:28And it's a very obscure drum, and you own it.
02:31So tell me about that. Are you a big musician?
02:34Not at all, really.
02:36A cajon is basically, it's almost like a wooden crate, and you sit on it, and you basically tap away like that.
02:43And it's just good when, you know, I'm feeling restless, I'm listening to music.
02:48It's good just to sort of tap along to the rhythm.
02:49And, you know, it's very relaxing.
02:53So I'm certainly not capable. I've tried the guitar.
02:56My fingers are far too fat for that sort of thing.
02:59But that sort of instrument, my little cajon, it's just perfect for me.
03:03Yeah, there's a big mental health connection with just having an instrument.
03:06I do the same with the ukulele, and I'm terrible at it.
03:08But just to play along, there's a little bit of mind space you can get from it.
03:12I recommend it to everybody.
03:13A nice and expensive instrument is a really big help.
03:16Well, listen, let's see how you do today.
03:18You're up against Ada Norman.
03:21Ada Norman is from Daventry and is 23, and has 101 things we could talk to her about.
03:26She's got very interest in life.
03:28Ada, you're a plane spotter.
03:30So tell me about that, and why?
03:32Why the love of planes?
03:33I just like watching them.
03:34Like, I'll watch, like, if there's one that's going above head, I'd just like to get the app up and see where it's going, whether it's taking off.
03:43I'm like a backseat pilot.
03:46What's your favourite plane? Is that a weird question?
03:49No, I quite like the commercial planes.
03:51Yeah?
03:52I quite like the A380s, the really big double-decker, going to nice places.
03:58Let's see if you can fly high today.
04:00Idan, David, good luck.

13:04I think I've got three seven eight.
13:05Not one down.
13:06That's a, whoa, a bit risky one.

13:33Perfect. 3, 7, 8.
13:35Lovely.
13:37Fantastic work, David.
13:3810 points for you, a healthy lead at this stage.
13:41As we talked to Trevor Nelson for the first time,
13:43I said at the start, pioneer.
13:46You don't use that word lightly, but it's absolutely true.
13:48So I was wondering, could you take us back
13:50to the proper early days, you know?
13:53Yeah.
13:54When Trevor Nelson wasn't the establishment figure
13:58that he is today.
13:59Yeah.
13:59I was called Trevor Madhatter DJ.
14:01I started a sound system with my friends in the 80s.
14:06I worked in a record shop, imported records,
14:08from America.
14:09That's how I started in the business.
14:12Race to Heathrow in a van.
14:14Honestly, I'd be on the phone to somebody in America
14:17saying, how many...
14:18What have you got new?
14:19And they go, we've got this band called Public Enemy.
14:21And I'd be like, OK.
14:22And they're really hot in New York.
14:23And I'd be like, what do they sound like?
14:25And they'd take the phone, put it to a speaker,
14:27and if you know Public Enemy's music,
14:29it's just noise, and it'd be just noise coming out of me.
14:32I'd go, um, that's really good, isn't it?
14:34I'd have ten.
14:35He goes, you want more than ten, man?
14:36And I'd have to get, like, 500 copies,
14:40race to Heathrow in this converted sheep-carrying van.
14:44Honestly, I kid you not.
14:46Count all these records up in the rain and snow or whatever,
14:49put them on the back of the van,
14:50race to all the independent record stores
14:52around the south-east of England,
14:53and sell them.
14:56At the same time, I was getting a name as a DJ in Hackney,
15:00just Hackney, and then one day I got a call,
15:04would you like to be on this new station,
15:07you know, called Kiss FM?
15:09No, I'd never done a...
15:10Never had a mic in front of my...in my hand, ever.
15:14And I said, well, yeah.
15:15And the thing about this station
15:17is everybody that joined this station knew music.
15:19They weren't broadcasters.
15:21They weren't...you know, it was a pirate station,
15:23and the first place I broadcast from
15:25was the Bookies in south London.
15:27Yeah.
15:27And that's how I started.
15:29The station, a year and a half later,
15:31ended up in my girlfriend's flat.
15:32We lived in a council flat 19 floors up in Leyton.
15:36And I remember we sat there and we all said,
15:39look, Kiss FM's going to have to come off the air
15:40because we just don't have any money.
15:43Yeah.
15:43We needed to raise £2,000 and we just didn't have it.
15:46Does anyone have anywhere to...
15:48you know, anywhere we could put the station?
15:50And I went...
15:52Oh, brilliant.
15:53Where is it?
15:54I said, 19 floors up.
15:56Even better!
15:57In Leyton.
15:58She came home.
16:00I said, uh...
16:01Babe.
16:03I just got something to tell you.
16:05Um, you know...
16:07You know Kiss hasn't got anywhere to go.
16:09She says, yeah.
16:10Well, every weekend they come in here.
16:12That was the end of my relationship, basically.
16:14Wow.
16:14But Kiss survived.
16:17And three years later,
16:19became the first legal radio dance music station in the country.
16:24And finally, we're at this point today where...
16:27But loads of people had sacrificed a lot of their time,
16:29a lot of their money, a lot of their energy,
16:31and risked a lot to get to that point.
16:34And relationships.
16:35A lot of relationships were lost
16:37in the building of the dance music radio community in Britain.
16:40Stephanie, I'm so sorry.
16:42I'm so...
16:43I love you so much.
16:44You were...
16:45You were too mature and good for me at the time.
16:48Trevor, Trevor.
16:49She went on to better Hengs, don't worry.
16:50Yeah.
16:50Thank you very much.
16:52APPLAUSE
16:53True story, that.
16:56Lovely.

18:26It's very good to get to the six.

25:55Look, Trevor, whoa.
25:56Trevor, whoa.
25:57Trevor, whoa.
25:58We could have had.
25:59Voting.
26:02Let's end Dixon Recorder.
26:03Origins of Words for this Friday afternoon.
26:06And Susie Dent.
26:07Well, I have to thank Ruth Franklin, who emailed us asking where the term piggy bank comes from.
26:15And unfortunately, many of us might have been resorting to our piggy banks in recent times.
26:21But it's a good question.
26:22Why do our savings pots have anything to do with our poor sign friends?
26:27And it's a sort of mixed answer.
26:30But again, it just kind of shows, I think, the sort of joyful adventures that English has been on.
26:34So it lies, the answer lies in the materials that we'll want to use, but there's also a slightly piggish play on words here as well.
26:41So first of all, storing money in vessels.
26:44We've been doing that for absolutely centuries.
26:46And long ago, these vessels were often made of earthenware.
26:51Metal was too expensive.
26:53And these vessels were often known as pigs.
26:56P-Y-G-G-S.
26:58And we think it's for various reasons.
27:02One is that the hide of a pig was sometimes used as a kind of wineskin for storing wine.
27:08And also because some of these vessels maybe slightly resembled the animal.
27:12But there's another reason here as well, which is that the clay that was used to make this earthenware was also known as pig.
27:19P-Y-G-G.
27:21And this clay was designed to be breakable.
27:24So in those days, and you can still buy these today, the piggy banks could not be opened unless you smashed them.
27:30It was such a sort of, you know, definitive thing that it encouraged you to save more because obviously once it was smashed, it was all over.
27:37So we think that because pig was used for the clay that was made to use these pots, it kind of inspired potters to make these pots in the shape of pig.
27:49So it was almost like they thought, oh, there's an idea.
27:51Much like, do you remember, we talked about the origin of mug and the face meaning of mug came about because mugs often were depicted with these sort of really quite grotesque faces on them.
28:00Similarly, we began to make our pig banks, as they were once called, because they were made of this clay in the shape of piggies.
28:08And that is where we get a piggy bank from.
28:09And that's how that one started.
28:10Lovely.
28:11Lovely.
28:13Right.
28:13It's not in the bank for you yet, David, but you're in a good position.
28:17Four rounds left.
