00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34And it was back in 1917, 100 years ago, that the food hoarding order was issued.
00:40Of course, during the war, a lot of people would have hoarded food for fear of a shortage suddenly, you know, hitting the island.
00:48But apparently, apparently people still hoard food.
00:53And apparently the average British family hoards at least 10 tins of food.
00:58The most popular, of course, being baked beans, followed closely, apparently, by tinned tomatoes.
01:03Extraordinary, really.
01:04In our house, it always surprises me that there's not much in the fridge.
01:09But I did go into our pantry once.
01:11I found it to be dim, daunting, even dangerous.
01:15So I don't go in there.
01:16But I didn't spot much food in there.
01:18I spotted quite a lot of alcohol.
01:20But there we are.
01:21Do you always have lots of food sitting in the fridge, just in case you fancy a nibble?
01:28Um, no, I'm just, I'm intrigued to hear you've got a pantry.
01:31We do, actually.
01:32La-dee-da.
01:33Not really.
01:34No, it's only a narrow pantry.
01:36I'm picturing something out of Downton.
01:39No, I don't think we could aspire to that.
01:43No, OK.
01:44Now, I've got a small, I'm in London, so there's not much room.
01:47So I kind of just buy it and then eat it straight away.
01:49Try and make one thing and think it will last the week and generally eat the whole thing on that night.
01:53That's what happens in our house.
01:54No, we eat for the moment.
01:56Stops us gorging.
01:59First world problems, ain't it?
02:01Exactly.
02:02Now, who's Mandy's back, Rachel?
02:03Mandy Spencer, care provider from Pembrey in Carmarthenshire, who was here 25 years ago.
02:09And she came back yesterday and she won and she got her teapot, something that they didn't give out all those years ago.
02:17Welcome back, Mandy.
02:18How was it?
02:18Yesterday was fine.
02:20Yeah?
02:20You enjoyed it?
02:21I did enjoy it.
02:22I really, and I'm so pleased to be back again today.
02:24Well, we're pleased to have you.
02:25You're joined by Steve Thompson, a retired oil and gas production supervisor from Fraserburgh, and was once in the Royal Engineers.
02:35Did one lead naturally into the other?
02:37Not really, actually, Nick.
02:38No, I didn't really start in the oil and gas industry until well after I left the army.
02:45But now you've retired and you're living up in Fraserburgh.
02:48That's correct.
02:48Lovely part of the world.
02:49Just north of Aberdeen, I think.
02:51That's right, yes.
02:51On the coast there.
02:52Yeah.
02:53You're both very welcome.
02:54Big round of applause to Steve and Mandy.
03:00Steve and Mandy, and of course, over in the corner, Susie and Nicky Chapman's back.
03:05Welcome back, Nicky.
03:06Thank you very much.
03:07All right.
03:08Now, Mandy, let's see how you get on today.
03:11Good luck.

04:32That's your music industry background.
04:34Any excuse I can to mention it.
04:36Did you like that?
04:37The roadies.
04:38That's a tough old job, isn't it, really?
04:40You're heaving stuff around all day.
04:41Yeah, but roadies love it, and they do it their whole lives.
04:45You'll find if you go on tour with a big band,
04:48they'll have the same roadies that they've had for 20, 30 years.
04:51It's like a family.
04:52And they always wear shorts.
04:54Always wear shorts.
04:55Shorts and those big sort of Timberland boots.
04:58Yep.
04:58Why is that?
04:59In case they drop anything, that's what that is.
05:01Is that what it is?
05:01Yeah.
05:02And the shorts?
05:03I'm not even going to go there.
05:04All right.
05:05Thank you very much.

06:41We had the same.
06:42Outwit, yeah.
06:43All right.

07:39Two, five, four.
07:40Two, five, four.
07:41Let's go with Mandy first, shall we?
07:42Mandy.
07:43Four plus one is five.
07:45Yes.
07:46Times fifty is two fifty.
07:48It is indeed.
07:50And then nine minus four gives you the other five.
07:53Nine minus four.
07:54Lovely.
07:54Two, five, five.
07:56Well done.
07:56Well done, Mandy.
08:01Twenty-two points.
08:02Good start there as we turn to our first tea time teaser, which is Maine Fresh and the

08:07He brings his fresh wares to the mainland every morning.
08:11He brings his fresh wares to the mainland every morning.
08:15Welcome back.
08:32Let's get the clue.
08:33He brings his fresh wares to the mainland every morning.

10:11We can, can't we?
10:12One more six, adroit.
10:14A droid.
10:15That is a droid, I suppose, in a way.
10:17How adroit of you.
10:1927 to 11.
10:21Mandy's in the lead and it's Mandy's letters game.
10:24A consonant, please.

10:56And a consonant.
10:57And a consonant.
10:58And a consonant.
10:58And a consonant.
10:59And a consonant.
10:59And a consonant.
10:59And a consonant.

11:13and a consonant.
11:14Mandy.
11:27I think I've got an eight.
11:29An eight, Steve?
11:30Just a seven.
11:32You're seven.
11:33Play it up.
11:34Now, Mandy, how sure are you?
11:37Partlier.
11:39Not there, I'm afraid.
11:40Portlier, but not partlier, Mandy.
11:43Sorry.
11:43OK.
11:44I think landing you is at risk, I think.
11:46Yeah.
11:47Now, Nikki.
11:48We have an eight.
11:49Yes.
11:50Well, Susie does.
11:51Take it away, Susie.
11:52We have a parietal, P-A-R-I-E-T-A-L.
11:57It is a term from anatomy and biology relating to the wall of the body of a cavity or hollow structure in the body.
12:05So the pleura, the lungs, for example, can have a parietal section to it.
12:09Talk about parietal lobes, that kind of thing.
12:11A surgeon would know.
12:12I don't currently have a surgeon.
12:19To be absolutely honest with you, I don't want one right now.
12:22All right.
12:23Mandy on 27.
12:24Steve's roared up now on 18, and it's Steve's numbers game.
12:27Steve.
12:28War from the top, please, Rachel, and any other five.
12:31Thank you, Steve.
12:32Same again.
12:32One big five little.
12:33And this time around, your selection is one, two, ten, five, eight, and 50.
12:41And your target, 110.
12:44One, one, zero.
12:46One, two, ten, five, four, four.
12:50Yes, Steve?
13:18One, one, zero.
13:19And, Mandy?
13:20One, ten.
13:21One, ten.
13:22OK, Steve?
13:2450 times two plus ten.
13:25Yeah, I'll save the paper with that one.
13:27And, Mandy?
13:29The long way round.
13:30OK.
13:31Eight minus two is six.
13:33Yeah, times ten.
13:35It's not that long.
13:37Plus 50, hopefully.
13:38110 as well.
13:39There we go.
13:40Well done.
13:40All right.
13:43So, still pretty much nothing in it.
13:4637 plays 28.
13:48Mandy in the lead.
13:49As we turn to Nicky, and you've got a busy schedule.
13:53My word, you never, you never stop working.
13:56But I hear you've got a new job.
13:58Another one.
13:58I have, yeah.
13:59Well, I'm lucky because I have a job that I adore.
14:02So, it's easy to work hard if you love what you do, isn't it?
14:05So, I'm blessed in that respect.
14:06But I did a series for the BBC called Operation People Power.
14:10And it was getting people to volunteer.
14:12And we concentrated on some projects in Bristol.
14:15I was with Dave Myers, who you might know half of the hairy bikers who I know has been on the show.
14:19So, and when we came away from filming and I was talking to people about volunteering, I thought, well, actually, I don't volunteer.
14:27You know, I do charity work.
14:28But volunteering is a slightly different thing.
14:30And there are so many people I know that do, something like 12 million in this country volunteer regularly, but I never have.
14:37So, I've got a job and I work in a shop.
14:41So, I volunteer in a charity shop.
14:43It's the Mary Porter's Living and Giving Shops, part of Save the Children.
14:47But, you know, there's lots of other fantastic charity shops as well.
14:50And if I have a day or half a day off, if I can, I go down there and I'm behind the till sorting out the clothes and giving a bit of time.
14:58And where is this?
14:59This is in West London, where I live.
15:01She's got about 22 shops, I think it is.
15:03Good for her, yeah.
15:04And it's a great idea.
15:07And the one thing that I didn't realise with volunteering, you know, you think you're giving to somebody else and you are, hopefully, for a good cause.
15:14But you also get an awful lot from it back.
15:17Friendship, you know, it could be references, companionship, doing something for your community.
15:21So, I've really enjoyed it.
15:23I started last year and it's been brilliant.
15:26The only, sometimes I do Sky, I do Sky News and I turn up with all my make-up on straight from there and go to the shop and I'm like a dolly bird, you know.
15:34People and I wonder what I've been doing.
15:36But it's brilliant.
15:38I really, really love it.
15:38So, the old maxim, better to give than to receive, has got some truth in it.
15:43Yeah.
15:43I mean, you can volunteer, can't you, in so many different ways.
15:46But I really didn't realise how much you personally get out of it.
15:50You're doing good.
15:51You're doing something, hopefully, for a local charity or whatever.
15:54But actually, I do enjoy it.
15:56So, yeah, I've got a Saturday job.
15:57Let's all get down there to West London.
15:59Yeah, that's very kind.
16:00Well done.
16:00Very good.
16:06We'll be down.
16:07So, Mandy, 37, Steve on 28 and it's Mandy's letters again.
16:11Mandy.
16:12Consonant, please, Rachel.
16:13Thank you, Mandy.
16:14N.
16:15And a vowel.
16:15And lastly, P.
16:41Stand by.
17:13Mandy.
17:14Seven.
17:16And, Steve?
17:17Seven.
17:18Mandy.
17:19Opening.
17:19Both of you?
17:20Opening.
17:20Just exchanged bits of paper there.
17:23Any more sevens, Nicky and Susie?
17:25Well, we can give you another seven.
17:27Napping, obviously not on the job, but napping.
17:30But Susie's going to better that, aren't you?
17:32Oh, there is a very unusual eight there.
17:34Jenny Papo.
17:36G-E-N-I-P-A-P-O.
17:38A tropical American tree with a jelly-like pulp as a fruit used for flavouring drinks.
17:45A Jenny Papo.
17:46APPLAUSE
17:47Very good.
17:50Well, we'll look out for one of those.
17:5344 plays, 35.
17:54And, Steve, your letters came.
17:57OK, can we start again with a consonant, please, Rachel?
17:59Thank you, Steve.
18:00S.
18:01And another.
18:03D.
18:05And another.
18:07T.
18:08And a vowel, please.
18:10E.
18:12And another vowel.
18:13A.
18:15And another vowel, please.
18:18O.
18:19And a consonant.
18:21L.
18:23And another consonant.
18:25H.
18:28And finish with a vowel, please.
18:30And finish with I.
18:33Countdown.
18:34L.
18:36And a consonant.
18:58S.
18:59Yeah, Steve?
19:06Seven.
19:07Mandy?
19:08I'm going to try an eight.
19:10Steve?
19:11Hoisted?
19:13Hoisted and?
19:14Solidate.
19:15Solidate.
19:16OK.
19:18Oh, it's not there, Mandy.
19:21Solidity, no solidate, I'm afraid.
19:23Sorry.
19:23There we are.
19:24Nicky, Susie?
19:25Well, there is an eight to be had, which is isolated.
19:29Isolated, very good.
19:30All right.
19:31Be careful, Mandy.
19:32Look, he's creeping up on you.
19:3344 to...
19:34Steve's 42, only two points in it now,
19:37and it's your numbers game, Mandy.
19:39One from the top, please, and five small.
19:41Same again.
19:42Thank you, Mandy.
19:43Five little, and this time the little ones are nine,
19:47five, six, seven, and three, and a big one, 75,
19:52and the target to reach, 577.
19:55Five, seven, seven.
19:58Six, seven, eight.
20:28Yes, Mandy? 5, 7, 6. One away. 5, 7, 8, I think. And one away, 2. So, Mandy? 75 times 7 is 5, 2, 5. Yep. 9 times 5 is 45. And add it on to give 5, 70. Yep. And then add the 6. Yep. One below. 5, 7, 6. And for one above? Steve? I think I've gone wrong, actually.
20:57No good. Let's see how it's done properly. If we may. Possible? Yes. You could have said 75 plus 9 is 84. Times by 7 is 588. And then you have 6 and a 5 to take away from 5, 7, 7. Ah, well done. Well done, Rachel.
21:14So, 51 to 42 now, as we turn to our second Tea Time Teaser, which is Tenor Tip. And the clue, he gave the waiter a £10 tip. It was richly deserved and appropriate.
21:31He gave the waiter a £10 tip. It was richly deserved and appropriate.
21:36Welcome back. I left with the clue. He gave the waiter a £10 tip. It was richly deserved and appropriate.

25:13A weirdy.
25:14Yeah, it's not the term for a weirdo, really.
25:17It was a tough one, this one.

25:20Viewed.
25:21Six is all the way.
25:22Mm-hmm.
25:24A weirdy.
25:2663 plays 54.
25:28Mandy on 63 as we turn once again to Susie Dent and her wonderful Origins of Words.
25:34And today, Susie?
25:35Well, I talked yesterday about the word asylum, Nick, and mentioned, of course, that they have
25:42had a slightly checkered past and that the word lunatic, in fact, has often been put in
25:47front of the word asylum.
25:49And lunatic, of course, goes back to the Latin word lunaticus, which originally referred to
25:57epilepsy and madness.
25:58They were diseases caused by the moon because for much of human history, legend has held
26:03that moonlight, that moonlight can send you mad, quite literally.
26:08But it got me thinking about moonrakers, which is a slightly affectionate nickname for inhabitants
26:13of Wiltshire, which I've always thought is a slightly romantic term.
26:17But if you look at the lexicographer, Francis Gross, who was operating at the same time as Samuel
26:22Johnson, he tells the legend of Wiltshire moonrakers as rustics, he called them, who, seeing the figure
26:28of the moon in the pond, tried to rake it out.
26:32In other words, they were very, very foolish, at least, if not very mad.
26:37But today's moonrakers, today's inhabitants of Wiltshire, will dispute that strongly.
26:41And they come up with an alternative story, that the men were, in fact, raking the pond
26:45for kegs of smuggled brandy.
26:49And when they were caught, they managed to fool the authorities and fool the revenue men
26:53by feigning madness and pretending to be raking the water in order to find the moon.
26:59Now, the moon can also apparently send you moonstruck.
27:03That is a word for being very, very heavily or deeply in love, or at least in love with the idea
27:08of romance. Again, the idea, originally to me, moonstruck was, again, to be mad, to be sent
27:13mad by the moon. But nowadays, it sends you mooning over somebody, literally, acting in
27:18a way that is slightly crazy, again, as if touched by the light of the moon.
27:23More prosaically, perhaps, a moonraker is also a high sail on a ship set above the sky sail.
27:29So high, in fact, it appears to be touching the moon. But few would probably prefer this over
27:34the romance of the smugglers and their passion for brandy.
27:38Indeed. Yeah. Very good. Very true.
27:45Yeah. As somebody who grew up in Wiltshire, of course, yeah. The moonraker was well known.
27:50The excise man thought they were just simple.
27:53Yeah. Simple rustics.
27:54Cunning Wiltshire people.
27:55Yeah, always.
27:56There we are. So, 63 plays 54. Steve, final, rather penultimate letters game for you.

29:42All right. But don't go into a Mardie.
29:44Now then, Nicky, Susie, what have you got?
29:47One more.
