00:00Thank you very much.
00:30Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown Studio.
00:34On the day that way back in 1947, 70 years ago,
00:39the first Tony Awards were that event, that great event,
00:42that great annual event took place at the Waldorf Astoria in New York.
00:46And, of course, it's an annual ceremony to celebrate the best in theatre.
00:52And way back in 1947, there were great, great people about, I think,
00:57Ingrid Bergman and also that great playwright, Arthur Miller.
01:01I think he won the Tony in 1949 for Death of a Salesman,
01:05just a wonderful play that I've seen a lot.
01:08I've seen Brian Dennehy in it twice on the London stage.
01:12I've also seen David Suchet in London.
01:15And it's coming to Northampton with Tim Piggott-Smith any day now.
01:20It's a wonderful, wonderful play.
01:22But Dennehy was the man. It was fantastic.
01:25This year, the Tonys will take place at Radio City in New York.
01:29And I think that you go to New York now and again,
01:32and you've seen some live shows, I think.
01:34Yeah, I saw The Rockets at Radio City.
01:36It's an amazing theatre, absolutely brilliant.
01:38And I saw Something Rotten on Broadway.
01:40I mean, have I seen it?
01:42I did see a show in New York once, a few years ago now,
01:46and it was a brilliant, brilliant comedy show by Jackie Mason,
01:49you know, the rabbi comedian.
01:51Yep.
01:52And he made us roar.
01:54It was fantastic.
01:55But when it comes to the all-time great,
01:57Brian Dennehy, if you ever get the chance in Death of a Salesman,
02:01just bring tears to your eyes.
02:05Let's see who's with us.
02:06A little bit of live theatre here from Mandy Spencer.
02:09Great win yesterday, 98 points.
02:11Well done.
02:12You like a little gamble now and again?
02:13Not usually such a gambler, but I'd only gamble if I thought they were right,
02:18but obviously I was wrong.
02:19You came through to a storming finish, and you're joined today by Shane Healin,
02:24a contact lens manufacturer from Waterford down in Southern Ireland,
02:28and you once managed to blag your way into a famous music festival.
02:32That's right.
02:32Now, this sounds criminal.
02:34Tell us a little bit about it.
02:35It was at Glastonbury one year.
02:37Yeah.
02:37Myself and three friends went in a camper van down to Glastonbury with a big bag with about 80 high-vis jackets in the back.
02:45So we drove around until we saw a big group of people in high-vis jackets that matched some of the ones that we had.
02:51So we put them on, and we just joined in with them, and we got into the festival for free.
02:56Well, well, well.
02:57And then you binned your high-vis jackets once in.
02:59As soon as we were in there, yeah.
03:00So it was a criminal conspiracy at that point.
03:02I wouldn't call it a criminal now.
03:03All right.
03:04Well, you're very welcome anyway.
03:05Thank you very much.
03:06You pay to get in here, I hope, today.
03:07Oh, yeah.
03:07Well done.
03:08All right.
03:08Let's have a big round of applause for Shane and Mandy.
03:16All right.
03:16And over in the corner, Susie, of course.
03:18Welcome back, Susie, as ever.
03:19And music, travel, gardens, horses, gorgeous homes.
03:24She gets all the great TV jobs.
03:26It's none other than Nicky Chapman.
03:27Nicky, welcome back.
03:28Thank you very much.
03:29All right.

10:13Um, six. And a six. Your six?
10:16Watery. Watery, Shane. Variety?
10:20Variety. Very, very good. Well done. Well spluttered.
10:24Very good.
10:27You sounded a bit surprised, though, Sotie.
10:30We were, actually, yes. Embarrassingly so, so you beat us.
10:35What had you got?
10:36Waver, watery, waiter. Well done. All right. Well done, Shane.
10:4119 plays at Mandy's seven. Mandy?

11:50I'll go for six.
11:53Mandy.
11:54Might.
11:55And gamete.
11:57You're spelling it with the I.
11:59Yeah.
11:59Yeah, unfortunately, it's G-A-M-E-T-E, I'm afraid.
12:03And in the corner?
12:05We've got a mega hit, which is what every band or artist wants, for seven.
12:10Seven.
12:11Well done.
12:11Well, that's absolutely up your alley, a mega hit.
12:14Well done.
12:15Could have done with a few more in my career when I worked in the music industry, but we'll take it today.
12:20All right.
12:20Well done.
12:21So it's 19 to Mandy's 12.
12:24And now, Shane, it's your numbers game.
12:27I'll have one large and five small, please, Rachel.
12:29Thank you, Shane.
12:30Again.
12:31One from the top, five not from the top.
12:33And these five small ones are six, eight, nine.
12:38Another nine and ten.
12:40And a big one, 25.
12:43And the target, 260.
12:45Two, six, zero.
12:46Two, six, zero.
13:01You.
13:02You.
13:03Yeah, Shane.
13:17260.
13:19260, Mandy.
13:20260.
13:21Thank you, Shane.
13:239 over 9 is 1.
13:24Yeah.
13:25Plus 25.
13:2626.
13:27Times 10.
13:28Fortunate target for that selection.
13:30And?
13:30260.
13:31Mandy.
13:31Same way.
13:33Yep.
13:34There we go.
13:34All right.
13:40So just seven points in it.
13:4229 to 22.
13:44Shane in the lead.
13:46As we give them a little rest and we turn to Nicky.
13:49Nicky, you have a great job.
13:53Escaping to the country.
13:54Yeah, I know.
13:55But whatever happens?
13:56Do they actually buy?
13:57Do you know what?
13:58Everybody asks me that.
13:59Do they ever buy any houses?
14:01Is this pleased to say we've just filmed a brand new series and it's revisits called I
14:07Escaped to the Country.
14:08Yeah.
14:09We worked a long time over that title.
14:10But the great thing is that we go back and we actually meet the people and we find out
14:15which house they bought and also how they've got on because with Escape, it's all about
14:19finding them their dream property.
14:21But it's also about giving them an opportunity to have a totally different life in the country.
14:26I think that's just as important as finding the bricks and mortar.
14:29So we do have a pretty good success rate in actual fact.
14:33And it's lovely just to go back and to see what's happened because you can never really
14:37second guess what's going to happen in people's lives.
14:40And to travel around the country and hear their stories, it's been extraordinary.
14:44Excellent.
14:45I mean, a lot of the, I suppose, elimination competitions televised, like The Apprentice,
14:51for instance.
14:52And I was on that for 10 years.
14:54And we never found out really what happened to the winners.
14:57And everybody wants to know.
14:58They do.
14:59And the broadcasters sort of just won't do it.
15:02One day they will, I hope.
15:03Yeah, I mean, we do.
15:04We want to find out what happened next, don't we?
15:06I mean, we had an extraordinary couple in Worcestershire.
15:09And I showed them this beautiful home.
15:11It was part of a granary.
15:12It was listed.
15:13So I think there were nine properties in total.
15:15And they bought the house.
15:16It was the mystery house.
15:17They're our most successful.
15:19And about two or three months after they moved in, it tragically burnt down.
15:24They were in the house.
15:25They got out literally with just their bedclothes on, mobile phones, car keys, and nothing else.
15:30They lost everything.
15:31And they got in touch with us, and we thought, well, they're definitely going to move.
15:35And the houses next door were also very badly damaged.
15:38They moved out for 18 months.
15:40The whole community where they lived helped them.
15:42They rebuilt their home, and they've just moved in.
15:45Now, we never would have known.
15:46But a lovely success story because people watched the show, saw it had burnt down.
15:50And it's lovely to go back and say, a happy ending.
15:53And they're really pleased with their new home.
15:55That's wonderful.
15:56What a good outcome that was.
15:57It was.
15:58Definitely.
15:58All right.
15:59So, Shane on 29.
16:00Well done, Shane.
16:01Seven points ahead of Mandy.
16:04And it's Mandy's chance to catch up now.

17:19And? Natural as well.
17:21You're both natural.
17:22Well done.
17:24Nikki and Susie, what are you up to?
17:26Looking very pleased.
17:27Well, I was really proud of myself with natural as well at seven,
17:30which is a high score for me, but of course Susie is brilliant.
17:33Granulate, she gets nine.
17:36Whoa!
17:38Very good.
17:40APPLAUSE
17:40And it's not just sugar, is it?
17:44Does it mean just chopping up with tidy bits or what?
17:47Yes.
17:47Granulate.
17:47Forming anything into grains or particles.
17:5129 plays 36.
17:53Still that difference, and it's Shane's letters game.
17:57May I have a consonant, Rachel, please?

19:12Yes, dancer.

19:17I'd like.
19:18Now then.
19:20Nicky and Susie?
19:21Go on.
19:22Cavorted is there for eight.
19:25Cavorted.
19:26Cavorted to cavort.
19:27Where does that come from?
19:28Is that a sort of a dance?
19:30It goes back to, actually, the movement of a horse when it performs a series of jumps on its hind legs, known as curvetting.
19:39Oh, right.
19:41Oh.
19:41Like there's Viennese horses that do extraordinarily unnatural things.
19:46The Spanish Riding School of Vienna.
19:49Yeah, beautiful.
19:50That's interesting.
19:50Yes, but, I don't know, somehow it's not quite.
19:55Right, right, yeah.
19:5642 plays 29, and it's Mandy's numbers game.
20:00Mandy?

24:30A risky eight? How about Shane?
24:32Seven.
24:33You're seven?
24:35Coursed.
24:36Now, how much for a risk is this, Mandy Spencer?
24:39It's a really big risk.
24:40Go on.
24:41Doshas.
24:43It's not there, I'm afraid.
24:45OK.
24:45Oh, sorry, Mandy.
24:47Bad luck, Mandy.
24:48What can we have, I wonder?
24:50We can have caroused for eight.
24:53Caroused?
24:54Yes.
24:55Do you do a lot of carousing?
24:57I used to with my arses, trying to keep them all together.
25:00I bet.
25:01I bet.
25:02Carousing.
25:03Lovely stuff.
25:04All right.
25:05Now then, 59 page 35, and we turn to Susie for her wonderful origins of words.
25:10What have you got for us today, Susie?
25:12Well, one of the things that I always try to do, as you know, Nick, with my origins of words,
25:17is to find curious stories lying behind the most everyday of words in English, and themes regularly recur.
25:23So, drinking, for example, which leaves a boozy trace, if you like, in many unexpected places, from bridal, which was bride ale, to even poison, which goes back to the Latin potare, meaning to drink.
25:34So, perhaps that is unsurprising, given our fondness for the hard stuff, if you like, over the centuries.
25:42Booze goes right back to the 1500s.
25:44It's one of the earliest words ever to be collected in a dictionary.
25:47But there are other themes that are perhaps a little bit more surprising, and one of those, with apologies to anyone who's just dunking a biscuit and drinking their tea, is breaking wind,
25:58which regularly pops up as a theme throughout English history.
26:04And I'm going to talk a bit about the aubergine, believe it or not.
26:07The aubergine, very popular in several cuisines, including those in the Middle East and the Mediterranean, really come to the fore in recipes of recent years.
26:15So, it may surprise you to know that the ultimate source of aubergine is a Sanskrit word whose meaning indicates that the vegetable it's referring to does not produce intestinal gas, believe it or not.
26:28So, if you're particularly prone to embarrassing yourself, perhaps, in public occasions, then the aubergine might be the answer to your problems.
26:36It was thought to have this particular medicinal quality of easing your digestive system, I suppose.
26:43And I'm going to finish with apologies to you, Nick, to the name Nicholas, which also has associations with this theme.
26:53Nicholas famously related to the devil, the old Nick, and St. Nicholas, of course, as well.
27:00But it's from that last incarnation, old Nick, that we actually get the word pumpernickel, pumpernickel bread.
27:07And if you break that down into its German origins, pumpern means to break wind, and nickel means a demon.
27:14So, actually, the literal translation of pumpernickel bread, unlike aubergine, is the breaking wind demon, I'll put it politely.
27:24So, lots and lots of words in English, as I say, that have this rather strange theme behind it.
27:28I won't comment on what that says about the British psyche, but I'm sure it says something.
27:31How funny.
27:37Talking about the, you know, the breaking wind demon, apparently, according to John Simpson, I think it was,
27:44he interviewed Gaddafi in that tent in the desert, and apparently he spent the entire interview,
27:52this is Gaddafi, not Simpson, breaking wind.
27:54I mean, apparently Simpson, I completely staggered, that he could produce so much wind.
28:00It was quite a long interview, apparently.
28:01He needed some aubergines, Flynn.
28:02He certainly did, he needed more than aubergines.
28:0559 plays 35, Mandy on 35, and it's Shane's Letters Game.
28:09Shane, start with a consonant, please.
28:11Thank you, Shane.

29:19Fowlers.
29:20Not there.
29:23I could have fowler in the sense of the adjective, more foul, but there is no agent noun, fowler,
29:28I'm afraid, Mandy.
29:29Oh, that really is unlucky.
29:31I would have put money on that.
29:32Not a lot, but I was a bit on it.
29:35Ah.
29:36Bad luck, Mandy.
29:37What can we have?
29:38Nicky, Susie?
